20.000 articles is an awful lot, especially when every single one is as dense with information as those you are posting on a daily basis. and you really did step up in the course of the last 10k, didnt take you more than 4 years. that's incredible, and i didn't read more than a fourth of that. but it's always been a delight, i can't imagine a world of movies without aicn. i've seen so much cool thanks to you guys, and right now things are looking better than ever. and if this article is gonna be as good as no. 10000 i'm gonna be even happier.

Stupid enter key. Anyway, looks interesting. I'm a long-time Burton fan, and my friends and I still watch THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS around Christmas and Halloween. Oh, and to A.G. and HypeEndsHere: honestly, I'm curious. Why, if you aren't interested, would you a) click on an article written about a film you aren't interested in, and b) take up our time and bandwidth by informing us of this? AICN might be a little bit of a joke sometimes, but it's still worth laughing at. I just wish that modern-day trolls like that Golden Showers broad were anywhere near as amusing as old-school trolls like Mercier. Like most (former) goths, I have a big Tim Burton/Danny Elfman fascination. When I saw the first preview for this, it didn't really get my juices flowing. From this article, it looks like they're saving the best stuff as a surprise! Wow! I can't wait to see this!!!

Tim Burton is an off and on director. Good movies included Batman and Batman Returns. Also, Big Fish and Ed Wood. Pee Wee's Big Adventure was great too. But what is up with Planet of the Apes, Beetlejuice and The World of Steamboy. I didn't see Sleepy Hollow, but then again I didn't hear great things about it.

I am starting to look forward to this movie. Teaser was nice, but not spectacular (music was a cool cue). I think Burton has made a load of cool movies (except for Planet of the Apes, which was interesting for all the wrong reasons) and I think he will have a winner with the Corpse Bride.

... as I said in the piece, repeatedly, this is not "enhanced with computer effects." What you're looking at is stop-motion animation, but with a level of technical craftsmanship that really hasn't been seen before. There are only a handful of shots in the entire film that use any CGI at all, and it's simply small effects, never for the characters themselves. If you think it looks too good to be stop-motion, that's an enormous compliment to the people working on the film.

How can you not like Beetlejuice? That's still a fantastic flick. Ed Wood is, I think, his best movie. Edward Scissorhands is a tearjerker. PeeWee's is one of the greatest movies of all time (though I'm still pissed that they ruined the DVD). Mars Attacks was a delightful (loose) adaptation of Dr. Strangelove. I'll agree that his modern stuff hasn't been tip top. Planet of the Apes left a lot to be desired, and Big Fish was creative, but didn't really go anywhere. Still, in my book, his track record gives him a lot more plusses than minuses.

It seems weird to take pride in no computer effects and then go ahead and do it. When I watch old Buster Keaton movies, i wonder if Buster would've digitally fixed something in the background but leave his stunts alone. I know that there was only one stunt in his career he couldn't perform himself. would he go back and put himself in instead of the stuntman?

During the lunch with Lowry and Kozachik, we talked about the bizarre thought process that seems to exist in some of your comments and in what BarryEgan said above, a mindset that also seems to be prevalent in studio executives... the idea that only one type of special effect can be used in a film, and that type of special effect had better be CGI. Yes... it would be possible to make this film entirely in CG animation, Barry, but why do you HAVE to? Tim Burton's a life-long fan of stop-motion animation. When he imagined doing it, he imagined doing it as a stop-motion film. That's the simple answer as to why it's not in CG. Because Tim Burton didn't want to do it that way. He wanted to do it this way. And as to HypeEndsHere's nitpick of my comments, there is a full box of tools available to any filmmaker right now. Just because you choose to make a film that is 99% stop-motion, does that mean that you shouldn't try to find the best way to accomplish each element of your film? They also tested the idea of using underwater tank footage for the Bride's veil, but decided that it just wasn't the right effect. I admire artists who use everything available to them to tell their stories these days. It's an amazing time to making films, technically, and the ones who aren't brutally rigid in their way of thinking are the ones who seem to be enjoying the new digital cinema the most. If this was some sort of formal style exercise like Dogme 95, with rules like, "No CG elements at all," then (A) I could see you being upset and (B) it would be very, very silly. Relax. Enjoy it as what it is.

I was genuinely wondering where the line is drawn. How much of a movie can involve CG before it's no longer able to call itself Stop-Motion in the purest sense? granted, in this instance, you're saying 99% is really SM. But if only a handful of shots employ CGI, then I think stating 'enhanced with computer effects' is a totally appropriate way to put it.

Honestly, I don't think CG could have delivered the same effect as stop motion. I don't know about most of you, but when something's CG, it looks like it. The artistic choice to make this stop motion lends an aesthetic value not seen much anymore, which adds to this film's uniqueness. Conversely, stop motion will never look like CG--and therein lies its charm, the little variations and imperfections in the animation make it seem that much more 'human' to me. Add to all of that the craftsmanship, hard work, art, and dedicated labor and you have a film that nearly transgresses its medium and borders on performance art. Count me extremely excited to see this.
