Jarv's comment, whilst leaning towards support of Aussies, is still a little unfair. Aussies have contributed a lot more than simply Neighbours. But don't forget even Neighbours once featured both Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce.

I guess Mark Steven Johnson had one left over from the filming of DAREDEVIL. That "Ryan Seacrest" haircut looks a bit off in that pic, like an old guy trying to look hip, but I guess we could get past that if they get his other look right. Bring on the flaming skull.

That's right, I'm with Harry. I'm in Dallas, and we win. I don't mean necessarily in sports or any other particular area, just in general. Texas wins. To the guy who said, "No wonder they lost the Alamo!" Umm, actually that's because it was 4,000 to 200, and they took out 1,000 of the enemy first. More importantly, despite world ignorance to the contrary, the Alamo was merely one battle in a larger war that culminated with San Jacinto IN WHICH WE WON OUR INDEPENDENCE. Yeah, just like the America thing, Texas BEAT A COUNTRY IN WAR. By itself (more or less). Then it became its own nation. Eventually it joined up with the US, but its originally independent status makes it the only state that can still legally secede from the union. Anybody else's state win a war? No? Back me up, fellow Lone Star Staters. To the rest, let the backlash begin. Your flame's can't hurt me!

The rest of you have to see the dregs we allow on television movies. We keep the best in the kitchen, where they belong (bite piss girl, please bite!). Every Austrailan man keeps the best for himself, because we learnt a valuble lesson in the forties. While we were in the jungle killing japs with boomerangs, you dirty yanks shagged all our women! A whole generation of young girls had to be tied to a stick in the middle of the outback, smeared with vegemite to attract the fireants. No australian bloke would touch a bird sullied by the sperm of a yank. Fuck Kylie. She's a pint sized drag queen compared to the girls getting around bondi in their hip-huggers. (I think daisy-dukes might be the only thing texas has ever contributed to humanity). Who cares that the texans won a war. You beat the fucking mexicans. What do you want a fucking medal? Australians kick arse in every war we've ever got to fight in. We don't get many because most wars end once they hear an aussie might get in for a scrap. Why do you think the Falklands only went for a week? Australians are kicking more ass in Iraq then a bunch of stupid yanks. Every Australian was pumped for getting invited to the war with Iran, but no, you all turned out to be pussys. But we're dead keen for Taiwan. All yanks are pussys. The only reason we don't invade other countries outselves is because no one else has women worth shagging (I've got my eye on North Korea, if those Southern girls are anything to go on though). So you can take your texas bullshit and shove it up your arse mate. ARSE. Yeah. That's how it's spelt ya dirty yanks.

California, Colorado and several other states. That may seem like nopthing unless you consider the sheer size of real estate we are talking here. Plus the gold rushes that sent people out west. Hollywood and several other cities were created from such rushes. Houston is the birthplace of breast implants. We killed Kennedy. Gave ya'll LBJ. Pee Wee wouldn't have his "Alamo doesn't have a basement". We got Davy Crockett killed. Galveston was home to pirates and then more millionaires per square inch than the rest of America until the Hurricane of 1900. The aftermath of which was filmed on one of the earliest films by Thomas Edison. We are the birthplace of several actors (Lou DiamondPhilips, Renee Zelwegger, etc.) beauty queens, and more than a few fat asses. Dallas (as much as I hate their asses) has had pretty good football teams. We also drilled the first oil well and no matter how eco friendly you are, you know how much of an impact that has had on history. Take that Yahoo Serious.
Texas vs. Australia-heh heh
by tombseye
Apr 22nd, 2005
10:10:47 AM
Ya know, far be it from me to defend Texas, especially since the latest contribution, by way of Connecticut of course, is Dubya and I'm a Californian, but I was dismayed by some of what I heard about Australia. Now I've met some really cool Australians and for some reason I think Naomi Watts (born in England, but what the hell) is the hottest chick on earth for some reason, however I hear that Australia is, in many ways, like Texas, especially the rural areas etc. I always envisioned Australia as a very progressive type place (and perhaps compared to Texas it is), but with John Howard at the helm I gotta wonder what the hell is going in Australia these days? With that said, famous Texans include Jennifer Garner, Janis Joplin, Jamie Foxx, Steve Martin, Dennis Quaid, Dan Rather, Gene Roddenberry, Lance Armstrong, Michael Dell, and Rene Zellweger among others. Interestingly enough, the two entities have roughly the same population and economic status (Texas is a bit ahead on this one though in GNP terms). Screw this. California rules! Not that I'm biased.

I almost moved to Texas...
by Childe Roland
Apr 22nd, 2005
10:18:27 AM
...for a job once. Then I visited. Austin has an interesting music scene and some very attractive women, but that's about it. And that's the cultural epicenter of Texas. As for being tough, Texans were just loud. And they tended to shut the fuck up when shown to know not what they spoke of. So that's something nice I can say about them. Still had no desire to live amongst them, though. I've known a number of Aussies and every one seemed to be a relatively soft-spoken, good humored, stand-up guy (or girl). The one I saw get into a fight at a bar wasted no time in exploding a guy's nose before helping him back to his feet and cheerfully offering to pay his cab to the hospital. So I'm going to give the "tough guy" award to the Aussies. And perhaps one of you Aussies can tell me... is that a dead wombat on Cage's head or what?

As an admited liberal/progressive/leftist who still believes in a REAL free market economy as opposed to the monopoly/protectionism for the developed world economy represented by the neocons, I view the assassination of JFK as a tragedy for this country b/c it helped push the country towards the hard extreme right. Not that I have an unrealistic view of JFK and the sometimes evil machinations done via the Special Group headed by Bobby, but I'm just sayin' it beats having Nixon come to power and the left losing their balls and withering before a braindead bad actor in the 80s. But what the hell Texas still contribued Steve Martin, Jen Garner's lips, and the old school Star Trek so I can try to forget the past.

Hey come on, Steve Martin had a good run. And Gibson's a transplant. I mean we might as well claim Anthony Hopkins as a Californian since he emigrated. Given Australia's small population, smaller than Canada(!), they've accomplished quite a bit though I gotta give 'em that. I'm just killing time and messing around as I don't even see why the two have to be compared other than for bragging rights. I hear New Zealand's better in some ways, but that was a Kiwi who told me that so I have yet to verify. You guys have to get rid of Howard though as your political situation is almost as bad as Texas' at the moment. I agree on LBJ really screwing things up too, but Nixon helped with the coup de grace when he Kissinger went to Paris and convinced the South Vietnamese that peace was overrated and that they still had a chance. thousands of deaths later...

I'm sure a similiar case is relevant in Australia, but Australians get the leg up based on one key fact: they live in Australia. Whereas if you live in Texas, you either live in a> Dallas - Squarejaw City, just south of OK, where the potholes eat children if the hobos dont get to them first (unless your north of the Trinity, in which case you are necessarily lame), b> Houston - 'Space City', where the iceheads have superhuman endurance thanks to breathing some mutant variant of oxygen, c> Austin - the Lesbian Capital of America, and this only sounds cool because the concept of lesbian in your mind is a far more excellent thing than the hairy reality (and where the traffic is so godawful you will have plenty of time to stare slackjawed in horror at the plentitude of hideous lesbians and drunken college geeks as you stew) or d> none of the above, in which case your just plumb out of luck. Add to this the fact that Texas is always hotter than the devil's balls, or as frigid and lightless as the heart of a giant haired matriach screaming at the cashier at the front of the line, execpt for three days in Spring, which you will spend indoors getting high out of habit, and Australia necessarily wins in the comparison. It's all about the environs, and in this, Texas loses. Note: there is a necessary exception for hardass Cowboys (REAL Cowboys, not real estate salesmen who wear cowboy hats) and Mexican Construction workers. These squarejaws are most likely on par, as far as hardassitude goes, with Australians. Any Texan who is not either one of these cannot and should not compete. and P.S. a big fuckerdoo to our great state for spawning Dubya and the redneck thief ethos that now seems to be perpetrating itself across the >mostly< great nation of America. Vote for Kinky. Im out.

Great place I gotta say. Girls are a lot hotter than the stereotypes about bad teeth. Lots of cool people. Too much of a reverence for all things American and Blair really screwed up going along with Bush, but hey nobody's perfect. I like the progressive atmosphere, but Labour seems to have developed some problems. You voting Lib Dem or going with Labour? I'm guessing your on the left since most Brits are. Plus, it's a pleasure to not be living in a place where it feels like Evangelical Christians are slowly taking over everything from the courts to morality on tv and cable news (Faux and infotainment).

I've never been to Austrailia so I will not even attempt to make any comments pro or con on that subject. However I am a resident of this great Lone Star State and I gotta tell you it's awesome here. I moved here from Michigan, talk about a culture shock. Texans have a lot of pride in who they are and where they live. But as far as what Texas has produced compared to Austrailia? Let's look at the music! The only Aussie band other than AC/DC that I know of is INXS, not worth bragging about mate. Well, I suppose you could count Russell Crowe's little ensemble, but I believe South Park did a wonderful episode chronicling that ego-inflated douchebag. Texas has given us a world of music: ZZ Top, Janis Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Pantera just to name a few. Someday I will visit Austrailia and see what it's all about, but I'm going to punch the first guy who says 'Crikey!' in front of me. I challenge any Aussie to come to Texas and not like it. I promise you'll regret you have to go back.

i agree both parties are sell-outs, but its critical to keep in mind that the new, improved Bush 2.0 (Born Again Bush) was born again here in Texas, in some pissant town, i forget the exact locale. Bush 1.0 was, if you'll recall, a hard partying boozer frat boy dope fiend and most likely would be a 100% improvement on the current model. To the points on music: conceded, for the most part. Pantera did in fact rock, and rock hard, and rock died (for the umpteenth and FINAL time) with Dimebag, but didgereedoo's rock hard as well, so we'll have to call it even. But the Geto Boys are from Houston, and i dont know of any psychotic Australian dwarf rappers, so Texas gets a point. As for the tax rates: exactly what is the tax rate on investment capital in Australia? Cause here in the U.S. its damn near 0, which means money you EARN by WORKING is taxed all to hell, first by social security, then byt he income tax, and then by the sales tax (at least here in TX), whereas money ACCUMULATED through INVESTMENTS (that is, money you dont do shit to earn) is not taxed at all. So the higher tax rate there would be a chimera, because in actual dollar terms, the lower and middle classes are taxed to oblivion while anyone making more than 93k (the mythic social security payroll tax cutoff) is coastin. Fuckers.

You're absolutely dead-on about the tax myth here in the states. If you haven't already, check out "Perfectly Legal : The Covert Campaign to Rig Our Tax System to Benefit the Super Rich--and CheatEverybody Else." It explains how, in fact, the tax system is rigged so that the middle class pay a substantial amount through something called the stealth tax and that the tax burden in actual percentages is the SAME for the upper 20% as it is for the bottom 20%! So much for the so-called progressive tax system. Now IF they actually do create a flat tax, they'll keep the exemptions and effectively crush the poor. Hell I love my country, but for cryin' out loud, the pricks running things are a bad combination of puritans and are actually ANTI-free trade. I'm a bit of a Neo-Keynesian myself, but what they want is far from free and fair trade as well. Well, back to work as I think I've killed enough time. Late folks.

Big up Texas, Dallas killed Kennedy (what you got on that, sucka!), Denton is actually home to much weirdness, and Linklater does good work. Austin WAS badass, until it was overrun by every cool person in Texas trying to escape to the only cool city in Texas, so the population densities are whacked. So, in retrospect, at least we're not Ohio. Texas: the pinnacle of the Midwest. Word. I'm just envious of any coastline not covered in black goo. You lucky bastards.

I'll try and answer what I can remember.--------------------- 1) Neighbours - I apologise on behalf of the nation - I've only seen part of the first episode - In Sri Lanka no less.------------ 2) Australia is fairly good even in the country with foreigners. The town I grew up in is a country town (but coastal) and currently where I'm working is country and inland but pretty good for the best part. Strangely enough, I've never met so many Africans as I have where I am now. A lot of them are on medical staff here. Of course there are always idiots who are bigots but with a lot of migrants surviving war and whatever else the world throws at them, they just generally find them pathetic---------------------- 3) Tax in Australia is quite punitive, the lower brackets get hit quite hard. If you earn too much, you lose other benefits elsewhere so they've worked out that the effective tax rates for middle to lower income earners can be as much as 60 cents in the dollar or more. Of course, direct comparisons between US and Australian tax rates are not easy, there's all sorts of state taxes and other things in the US etc etc.

and for the finale: the Dallas Morning NEWS did more to kill Kennedy than the actual Dallasite populace (save for the fringe lunatics who were beat into a frenzy concerning his arrival), and that's a fuckin bummer, Stevie Ray Vaughan is, in my opinion, a legitimate legend, Aphex Twin is a badass, but listening to his music gives me flashbacks, and uhhh on topic . . . what the hell? Nic Cage is doing Ghost Rider? So is his toupee going to bust into flames when he turns into Johnny Blaze? Cause that will be badass. P.S. Superman looks about as gay as Bryan Singer. The town names mentioned above come from the local aboriginal tribes, not the english settlers. Since they had no concept of counting, (you either had 'one' of something or 'more than one'), the way they denoted a plural in their language was to repeat the word. 'Wagga' is the local Wiradjuri tribe word for 'crow', 'Wagga Wagga' translates as 'more than one crow'. Now having lived here most of my life I just have to say: 'What bloody crows? Where?" Er...while it may be a monarchy there has been what we know as the house of commons since 1660 - if you are talking longest running democracy i think that honour actually goes to the swiss doesn't it? Wasn't there a military dictatorship in greece in the 60's? I think that certainly puts greece well off the chart when it comes to longest running democracy

We've found Tinkerbell! BTW, New Zealand is NOT technically a republic I don't think. And the UK isn't a monarchy - the Royal Family doesn't 'rule'. Also, I say again, New Zealand was the first country to give ALL of its citizens the right to vote, that makes it the first TRUE democracy, right?

Things being products of their time surely? Still kudos for NZ anyway. Oh and I've heard Britain described as, at various times, a democracy, a monarchy, a parlimentary monarchy and a parlimentary democracy. Take your pick.

AICN SUCKS!

Ten things I am sick of seeing on AICN: 10-5 10)People who brag about being first. Who gives a fuck? Do you want a cookie? 9)People personally insulting the AICN staff. Harry's a fat fuck! Moriarty's a douche bag! Qiunts a fuckface! While all the above maybe true, what does that have to do with anything? 8)Harry's total unprofessionalism on this website. He thinks that by littering his stories with profanity and sexual comments he's a disconnected, hip, to cool for school motherfucker when he's anything but. It only shows his desperation for attention and acceptance. (Not to mention his lack of journalism skills) 7)Harry's blatant brown nosing of certain celebs. His nose is so far up QT's ass that he couls shit red hair balls for a week. 6)Wanna be hacks shelling for their websites or low budget projects on this website. Use your local penny rag, it cheaper and less annoying. 5)Lame motherfuckers making up "cute" little saying that everyone starts biting on and overusing. Example "teh suck". To the person who started this-FUCK OFF!!! to be continued....

I thought GR's flaming chopper was one of the most ridiculous pre-hype images ever released. Until I saw Nic Cage with what appears to be some sort of Appalachian entree glued to his melon. Cage is a great actor and I really enjoyed the DD Director's Cut. But I think Ghost Rider is a character that is best left to the funny books. I agree somewhat with the pro-R rating crowd, though. If made dark, scary, and violent enough people might be able to forget just how silly it is to see a guy with a flaming skull for a head riding a fiery motorcycle.

This should be made into a movie like Freddy Vs Jason but have a war where Australia and Texas are up against each other! Starring Harry Knowles as Leatherface and Russel Crowe as Nicole Kidman! LOL you people get so worked up over one comment by Harry. Truth of the matter is who gives a shit. The most likely scenario would be both probably too drunk to even remotely fight each other and would porbably just end up singing some Led Zeppelin tunes til dusk.

Aussies, come up to Texas and drink some brews with me and I'll show you how great this state is. Texas friendly y'all.

I think Texas would be much better if the people stuck to the ideals of its founders, rather than getting dragged into doing the dirty work for rich people (ie Bush). Australia is unfortunately very similar in this way (ie Howard). Both lots of people are pretty laid back and like to do things differently to others. As for Australia's achievements, I had to add these: * Barry Marshall identified the bacteria that cause stomach ulcers, which had been regarded as having a psychosomatic cause * David Warren invented the black-box flight recorder * Earl Owen pioneered microsurgery * Graeme Clark developed the bionic ear * Sir Howard Florey shared a Nobel Prize in 1945 as co-discoverer of the antibiotic penicillin * James Harrison devised the sulphuric ether refrigerating system for a brewery in 1860 * Ralph Sarich engineered the orbital engine

Oh my. I enjoy Mr. Cages's film so very much. He was so funny in "Gaurding Tess". I see he is going to be in this motorcycle movie, you people should not give him such a difficult time with his costume. He is an actor, and purhaps the role requires him to wear certain items that you might think look funny or strange, but are very important too his charature. How would you like people making fun of you? And how you dress? We are all special, and Mr. Cages's costume is special also, so let us remember the good manners we all learned in school.

Well, having been unconscious for the best part of 12 hours, I better come back and add something to this truly bizarre talkback.--------------------- -- Wagga Wagga - I literally come here to work and the moment I finish, I flee back to the (qualifying statement) big city (Sydney) every second week. I don't go to any of the pubs because I don't drink (alcohol). However, after 10 days on an extended night shift here, I may well be willing to start. (Yesterday was the first day of 10). My job is to sit in the intensive care unit and literally watch machines that go ping. If anything goes wrong I have many years of university training to teach me to dial a phone and call someone who actually knows what they are doing-------------------
Well, before this talkback disappears into the sunset ...

Prevert ... as an Australian, it would be remiss of me to not attack New Zealand at every opportunity - and you as a New Zealander, if you're not reciprocating with the abuse ... well you're just not doing your job.-------------------------- -----About democracies, apparently some people in the US mistakenly refer to themselves as the oldest democracy when in fact I read they are the oldest continuous currently existing democracy. I can't confirm if that's correct though ...

GR Fan... I Thinks Cage Is Fine
by CaptDanielRoe
Apr 23rd, 2005
02:16:38 PM
I'm inlcined to get mad about bad costumes and comics story changes. I think the new Supes looks lousy. However I started reading Ghost Rider towards the end of the Johnny Blaze original run; GR was probably my favorite character until the Simonson Thor (right after Son of Satan). I read the Dan Ketch years in utter confusion as to why they would ditch Blaze, then turn him into a Gambit wannabe (with a Terminator faceplate no less)................Well, long story short: I was perfectly prepared to hate Nick Cage in this role. But before one look at the photo and I thought he looked great in the role. I've enjoyed some of Cage's work more than others, but when he's good he's great, irreplaceable. He looks great here; he looks right..................Ghost Rider, both Blaze and the demon Zartathos, make up the Ghost Rider character. Ghost Rider is like Fonzie, if Fonzie were actually cool to a 10+ year old. Fonzie if Fonzie contained within him a brimstone hurricane shot through with bolts of hellfire. Fonzie if Fonzie were an evil demon so cool that he couldn't help doing good deeds and saving the world just by virtue of being so cool. A demon who only has a taste for the wicked.................Who the hell would you rather have in this role? Some vacant pretty boy schmuck? That said, I could see some other choices. Matt McConnawhosit comes to mind, but he's too earnest, not playful enough, not quite cool. A young Fanco Nero (he's booked full through the seventies though). So I dunno who y'all think would be better, but I've got a hunch that reading down the talkback column I'll see more bad suggestions than good ones.
The Oldest Continuing Democracy
by CaptDanielRoe

Is Iceland. They had ostensible allegiance to monarchs but the country has been democratically ruled by the Althing for many centuries. And the USA is not a democracy, never was, it's a republic. Although the Republicans, ironically, are in the process of turning it into more of a democracy. Time was, because of the failure of democratic revolutions in Europe, descending into backbiting bloodbaths, "democracy" was a dirty word and the founders of the USA shied away from it as well as the concept. President Wilson (Bush is touted as a "Wilsonian") introduced the word democracy in the sense it is used today, as something the USA has an interest in promoting. Oh sure it was sometimes used before in a positive light but not til then as a rallying banner. Of course what Wilson meant by "democracy" is "American Interests." It's just a code word and dictatorships, emirs, whatever, do just fine once the spreading-democracy-confetti is settled.
How Screwed Up Are We When...

To capture the brilliantly dark tone of the comics would require an R-rating... And we'd rather not do that, and instead just basically make a different property, defeating the purpose of using the comics as a basis. The ratings system is so screwed up. They rate for tone, not the actual violent content. Because they are a bunch of wingnut jerks. And so is Hollywood for catering to them...

Oh and for TNT868 I heard that the French surrendered Paris because they heard that Germany advanced.... in the world cup. This debate, is much like fitting wheels to a tomato, time consuming but completely pointless.. we will NEVER see an answer to this point due largely to the fact that when Aussies/Texans argue points they site stronger pros, to lesser cons... ie. "Australia has Naomi Watts, Russel Crowe and Eric Bana etc..... Texas has Steve Martin and George Bush".. do you see what I mean... or "Texas has Stevie Ray Vaughn, ZZ Top and Rene Zelwegger... Australia has Steve Irwin and the Platypus"... This does not prove anyones case, nor does it make an intentional point other than how inward looking and culturally bised some 'folk' are. For the record, Australia is roughly the same land mass as the USA, has roughly the population of Los Angeles, 'the red centre' is very similar to Texan landscape (which is to say, pretty bare and boring to drive through).. I love Australia, I'm all for a country where an asshole like me can get ahead and still enjoy a teriffic family life, I also like Texas, I like america as a whole in fact, I don't nessesarily like alot of Americans, because you're all so high strung over there (most americans I met travelling over there were in the 'service industry', be it customer service, food service, or airline personnel.. and they all hate thier jobs so it's not fair for me to judge them really).. but the few I know that have left there are really great people. Hell my sister in law is born and raised in Columus Ohio.. I guess the only plus that I can see that Australia has, is the only illegal immigrant problem we here in Australia have is deciding which boat to sink.. Other than that, I have no beef with Texas, nor do I think we are any better or worse than they are (and vice versa).. I think we're just taking the vexatious comments of a biased man, who would have trouble leaving his own room let alone the country, too seriously. *bamf*
Australia vs Texas

Well ... the impression I got from this talkback was that we are trying to compare two fairly different things, so you'd never get a definitive answer as to who is "better". Therefore, I figured most of us from both Australia (a country) and Texas (former country) were just joking. Correct me if I'm wrong please ... P.S Prevert, you guessed that I too was just joking right ... (Curse this inability to convey humourous overtones with just a text medium !!!).

Nixon (born in Cali) started vietnam and texas gave you bastards drugs, which passed through our borders, so you could get high and forget to wear your bras. Naomi is not hot. Nicole is too thin. Only Mel is the shit, but all were not born in that shithole- Australia- of a nation. More importantly all those bastards are criminals. Yes, let us not forget that Australia was used as a prison and that's the shit they were breed from. I don't like George W. (hey his father was born in the American east and moved the family to texas, so I gotta put some blame on those ny, n england people) but I am from Texas and I am a moderate-liberal, if there is such a thing. I hate that some of these fucks voted for him but just like those idiots in Cali voted for Arnold (I like him but he isn't a very good governor), we ended up getting Bush elected. If you really hate Bush hate Florida for the shit they've created. As for music, it is hands down Texas that rules. As for actors it is pretty close, cause I can't recall where all of old Hollywood was born. As for politics it is all Texas. Come to Texas and see if it don't get you killed too. Jfk, crocket, every race, every nationality, we got a number of guys killed here in this place. Go to mid texas and it is different than the eastern and southern parts. What might get you killed in one area won't in another. Shit men kill men in Texas. In Australia spiders and Kangaroos kill men. You all some pussies. We erradicated millions of species with our guns our hands and our pollution, what the hell did you guys do, screw your cousin. Yeah, cause your criminals your too stupid to evade the law.

He is just painful to look at in ANYTHING, I am afraid. Maybe the script will be dark and painful and his looks will only add to the torture of his character... Really! Maybe he can make it work! But thank God he never got into a Superman suit. And maybe he will look really good with his Skull on fire.
