I thought Nightbreed was great, but you know what? I wouldn't mind seeing a remake or even a sort-of-japanese remake of it. How often do they remake our movies?! We've been taking stuff from thier culture for quite some time now, and I don't think it's a big deal if they take something from us. Of all things to do to... It looks good though. It's not about a long-darkhaired japanese girl on a revenge quest, so it's got my vote!

lotta late 80s horror is forgetable and cringeworthy, but that one still sticks in the mind as being pretty darn good. Barker can write great novels AND direct, which is more than can be said for King, the "master" of horror.

Nightbreed Director's cut?

Does the DVD exist or is it a rumor? I remember watching the opening title shot for Nightbreed and they showed a quick montage of footage (like Peloquin looking even freakier with his mouth opening REALLY wide)that wasn't in the film. It was a really cool flick. I'd like to have seen a sequel instead of the 50 hellraiser movies they made.....

The idea of the city in the graveyard is absolutely brilliant, the cop characters were horribly cliched and 2 dimensional and ruined the last act of the film.
That last shot sold me.

Good old Miike. I'd love to sit some of our fine nation's more prominent figures of the Christian Right in front of a Miike marathon. Collective heart attacks and aneurisms all around. Good times!

All the monsters look like they come from the old Yokai series. I wonder what Miike will add to it.

Nightbreed Director's Cut

I meet Clive Barker three years ago at a book signing. I was last in line, and he hung around and talked to me for over an hour!! As far as Nightbreed, he said that there definately be a director's cut in 3-4 years with extras and everything. He then told me about how Nightbreed (and most all of his works) was a metephore for gay culture. I asked him if the Berserkers were the "Richard Simmons gays", and he laughed. By the way, he was a DAMN friendly and cool guy.

Clive Barker IS gay

A friend of mine and I went to the gay and lesbian film festival here, because they were playing Hellraiser and I wanted to see it on the big screen. I figured as long as we watched each other's backs, we'd be ok. Clive was there for an intro and a Q&A afterwards, and he was highly reccomending gay sex to everyone there (i think everyone else there was gay but us, because when we walked through the door, we got funny looks and you could hear the record scratch. Anyways, it makes sense if you watch and listen to his movies close enough. I mean, demons in tight bondage? C'mon...
it also makes sense...

...if you happen to read the intro to his collected "books of blood" or any number of interviews where he flat out discusses his homosexuality. I don't think there's much question here.

...but there really isn't much relevance in terms of value/quality judgments concerning his work. Certainly Barker's personal experiences of life and relationships influence his art to a certain extent, but anyone who dismisses his work as solely relevant to the gay subculture is missing out on some excellent writing and particularly characterization. Whatever his personal tastes in the bedroom, the man knows how to write people - of all shapes, sizes and orientations - and he does it well. I just wish people wouldn't get hung up on things that ultimately shouldn't impact their experience of an artist's work (I mean, it's not like he pulled a Gallo and filmed himself getting knobslobbered by a teenaged guy as some sort of self-indulgent cinematic fantasy actualization exercise).

No, he didn't mention any future Nightbreed movies. He'd like to return to it (using the hollywood term) "someday", but it's a very close project for him, so he'd want to do it right. BTW, did you ever see his Nightbreed, Hellraiser, and Jihad comics? They were pretty decent (especially the Hellraiser ones).

No, but since he talked to me for a long time about it, it obviously means a lot to him. No, it's not an issue for me that Clive is gay, but, it is important to bring up if, as a fan, you want to completely understand where he is coming from...and to understand that his films have more meaning under the surface than just being another monster flick.

I kind of lost interest in his work after he started writing kids books. His books then turned into more fantasy than the horror stories of his earlier work.

i live in japan, and trust me, man, there are a lot of takes on western pop culture here. the problems are either 1) it doesn`t get distributed for some reason or 2) it sucks so bad you don`t want to even get near it.
