I read "When Worlds Collide" and "After Worlds Collide" in a handy two-fer version decades ago. What was in the books, but not in the film, was the fact that the Japanese and the Russians (long time ago, correct me if I'm wrong) had also sent their own people to survive and colonize the new planet. "After Worlds Collide" dealt with the ensuing conflicts, i.e. good ol' Americans vs. evil Commies/Yellow Peril, as they tried to survive on the thawing planet in it's convienient new orbit around the Sun. That whole subplot is far too racist to even be considered as fodder in the new film; it'd have to be updated considerably, if at all.

Jesus Christ! Van Helsing was da bomb (in the literal sense) both critically AND commercially and as for the fucking Mummy Returns.. the less said about that the better. It would appear that he has busted out of director's jail - you would have thought that studios had decided to stop giving him money to creatively piss up a wall and prevent him from (re)making any more bloody movies. Notably talentless director David "The Rock" Nelson also made a movie called The Mummy Returns, which was made using no talent and a camcorder - couldn't somebody give Sommers one of these to make his next movie and leave big movies to people who actually have their own ORIGINAL ideas...

First of all, there was still that "Jason and the Argonauts" film he was planning where a group of WWII soldiers accidentally come across mythical monsters...no idea how that's coming along. And, what I feel is quite important...a lot of the stuff he put in his monster movies are from folklore, history and literature, so he didn't really take most of it loosely. Also, I'm still waiting for "Mummy 3" "Van Helsing 2 & 3" (It's a damn trilogy, for crissakes) Universal's non-musical "Phantom" movie (He is the only choice to direct that) he's committed to directing "Kingdom for Sale" and possibly "The Big Love" and....I want to see Seann William Scott as Flash and Will Kemp as Barin. That's all I ask.

Maybe i'm wrong, and i hope someone corrects me, but I thought planets break up when they aren't held in orbit by their Sun? How would a planet break out of its Star's gravity and make it's way towards Earth? What would also be powerful enough to propel the planet from it's orbit, but allow it to remain intact? I guess it'll be an planet sized astoroid, but then it'll be another Armaggedon or Deep impact.

Bronson Alpha is the one that scheduled to hit earth, but since it's about the same size as Jupiter, the crash isn't all that spectacular. Sort of like dropping a marble in a bucket of liquid menthane. Anyway, humanity's only chance is to hitch a ride (without the guide) on Bronson Beta which is roughly the same size as earth and which impossibly is going to fall into near Earth orbit around the sun. In short, this story employs the same knowlege of celestial mechanics that was used in Space 1999 where Earth's moon broke loose and started roaming around the universe, looking for adventure.

"The Founder" - a planet is held together by it's own gravity, ot the sun's, so that would not be an issue. Also there are many ways a planet could escape the pull of it's own star and hurtle across the void of space alone as a rogue planet... those don't bother me at all... what really bothers me is that any such planet would be a frozen wasteland with no atmosphere (frozen into solid - not gaseous form anymore...) - until it encounters a sun to warm it up a bit... but then it would be millions of years before that planet would become habitable again... it would NOT be like some NASA freeze dried meal you just pop onto the "sun" microwave and POOF! - instant Earth replacement... That's my biggest concern... HOW THEY GONNA DEAL WITH THAT ONE...? I would rather they set up colonies on Mars or something to escape the Earth being destroyed...

And some other comments... The chances of a roque planet coming along and smacking into the earth directly are so completey remote that if that were to happen - I would think a lot of people would have to assume it was "DIVINE" intervention(destruction) and there would be a religious frenzy surrounding the issue if we were worthy to be saved or not... Also, just having two planets enter our own solar system would have more of an oppourtunity to frak up the orbits of the smaller planets than actually HITTING one, such as Earth... That scenario would be equally as bad - having the earth either hurtle in towards the sun to burn up or be consumed - or being sent on a wild orbit out into the farther reaches of our own solar system - to freeze to death (just like that awesome old Twilight Zone Episode!) ... You don't need a planet to score a Tiger Woods Hole in One - to wipe us all out... Even our solar system passing through cosmic dust can frak up the dymanics and cause mass chaos to the orbits... Also passing close to another Star could do the same damage... THERE IS LOTS of GOOD SCIENCE out there to play out this scenario... PLEASE don't take the EASY/DUMB way out on this guys... Give us something that actually makes sense... As far as colonizing another planet.... I can take some liberties on how we get there... but seriously, there is no way in hell that a rogue planet from the depths of interstellar space (or even from a distant orbit of our own sun) would be habitable soon after getting into an Earth orbit... it would take much longer than that for things to settle down... I really think that we would have a better chance to send all our efforts to colonize MARS ... and then you can even get into the whole scenario that maybe life started on Mars in the first place billions of years ago... and now it's our only chance for survival, etc... (a bunch of really good stories there...)... OK... I guess I should actually work today... and stop this endless rambling... have fun guys...(and gals)...

I really like the original. But a remake would have to be: 1) survivors on Moon or Mars and 2) have the same feeling about God the original. I do not want to some super-hyped up adrenaline-fixed remake with rock music blaring in the background. Just a simple update on 'Oopsey the planet is coming...".

Oopsy - the planet is coming... ROTFLMAO... I want another Deep Impact NOT that Armaggedon crapola... The more I think about the Mars scenario - the more I get excited about the possibilities... although there is a good chance the Mars orbit would also get totally screwed up... (but with some really thought out scientific models... maybe they can show how it might stay stable...) - I think it would be really freaking cool if during the course of the movie we would learn that life did arise on Mars first - and got ejected from impacts to Earth and took hold... Then the whole premise of us using Mars as our "lifeboat" would be that much more incredible... the fact that Mars is there in the first place makes us pretty darn lucky... and now it's only fitting that we use it to save our asses... Mars has all the resources needed to sustain a colony (albeit - it would be pretty lean times... for a long time) - but the natural resources are all in place ALREADY ON MARS... It would be pretty cool if all of the freaking space faring would just start loading up rockets with all kinds of stuff and sending it to mars - for the future colonists to use later... like a mass exodus of rockets all heading towards mars with any sort of goodies they think we might need when we get there... (hopefully some of them actaully land intact!!) NASA could even alter the space shuttle fleet with extra boosters (or nuclear rockets - no time to test them out.. .the plans already exist and were tested decades ago...) so we could use the shuttles as extra vehicles to get to mars... it's one-way trip, so there is no need for return fuel... just throw everything we have at mars and hope for the best... That in itself would be pretty dramatic... like the last dying breathes of the earth would be hundreds of rockets and old nuclear missles breaking orbit and heading towards mars... and also probes into deep space with information about Earth - for some future alien race to learn about us if we don't make it... that is drama - folks...

Founder - you are probably right about that and I thought about that scenario also... but the only other option is to colonize the "new" planet and that would also have the same problem to deal with - with all the debris floating around in the solar system... But I think that if they can somehow get around that issue the rest of the story is much more feasible in dealing with colonizing Mars - than some rogue FROZEN planet that is coming from the outer depths of space / or our own solar system... I would assume that even if the new planets atmosphere would return to a more normal gaseous state when it goes into a more Earthlike orbit... just the fact of all that water ice melting and the dynamics of all of that would make it's surface pretty darn inhospitable - compared to Mars... I think we can find a workaround for the debris issue - leaving Mars mostly unscathed... Actually you could also have a scenario where Mars is bumped into a MORE habitable orbit - compared to where it is now... and then it becomes a little more Earthlike with the melting ice and denser atmosphere from the added oxygen, etc... (but YES... there is that whole melting ice and groundwater problem...) I just think that a "NEW" planet has tons more problems (scientifically) than dealing with MARS... (Hey I KNOW it is only a MOVIE... but I think this is fun dialogue to have with you guys... discussing the science aspect of how this could all work out...)... keep it real - my brothers and sista's...

Ok guys, I know I have somehow become some Freak Mars Advocate today... but the more I think about it the more I really like the idea... Having Mars bumped into a closer orbit to sun after all that whacky orbital shenanigans... is a good storyline also... it gives Mars a better atmosphere AND LIQUID WATER... COLONISTS BE WARNED: STAY OFF THE FLOOD PLAINS... I'd park right up on Olympus Mons... (the new Hawaii!) haha... but YES - you still have to deal with debris and the like... but even that has consequences that might work to our advantage to "terraform" mars... so that whole storyline could somehow work out to our advantage also...

cookylamoo - mentioned the books (I never read them) talking about Bronson Alpha being a Gas Giant and if that's the case maybe there would not be so much debris because it would all be absorbed by the Gas Giant and then it would slingshot out of the solar system - acting like it was just a big old Vacuum cleaner to wipe out the Earth (religious overtones again - BAD EARTH - EARTH MUST GO...)... But that leaves us with another interesting storyline... without TWO rocky bodies colliding and having all that nasty ROCKY debris floating around... that leaves a much safer situation in the solar system than before... although a Jupiter sized planet coming into the Sun's gravity well - would reak total havoc with orbits of the rest of the planets... but then again... maybe Mars would wind op closer to the sun... (yeah Mars!) :-) - So, Jupiter sized planet sweeps in, Earth gets sucked up - not a lot of debris (maybe) - and then Mars gets bumped closer to the sun... this could work out nicely...

I agree with radio1_mike and airojam that using Mars as mankind's refuge is the only option that has a chance of not seeming utterly ridiculous. I remember telling my parents the original didn't make sense when I was in elementary school. Wouldn't it be cool if, as Bronson A & B pass through the Oort cloud, they sweep up a bunch of comets in their trail. Some of these comets conveniently slam into Mars and start a terraforming process that descendants of the refugees will some day be able to enjoy. Hell, instead of having a Bronson Beta, let Mars get shifted into a closer (warmer) orbit. At least it would be pre-thawed. As far as devastation to Mars from the impact, I would think that a lot would depend on where Mars is in its orbit relative to Earth at the time. It's not locked in a synchronous orbit with Earth, so there is a big variation in distance. I do wonder though, if Bronson A is a Jupiter-sized gas giant like the original book, would the Earth just get absorbed by it, or would it crumble to pieces because of tidal forces?

Hey Ktak, yeah... i get spastic on the keyboard when a subject I am interested in gets some good attention by people who are not saying how much they hate Star Wars, etc.. I love Sci-Fi, but would really like to see more factual based science movies... there is a TON of really good stories to tell in the confines of REALITY BASED SCIENCE!! This whole Earth getting wiped out and Mars being our only hope story has totally fascinated me... maybe because it's Monday.. but I think because it's just damn compelling stuff... Also thinking about orbital mechanics and the way we can avoid the debris issue, etc... was much more interesting than whatever I had going on today... I just got back from the grocery store... I'll eat my roasted chicken and start typing up a storm again in about thirty minutes... ha ha - you guys rock... (and p.s. I LOVE STAR WARS - for what it's worth...)

Ktak - one more thing... your comments about the Oort cloud and the Bronson's draggin in a bunch of comets behind them is a really good point... what most people don't realize is that Mars is already pretty darn inhospitable... having cometary debris raining down for a bit will actually ADD to it's atmosphere and make it eventually much more habitable... the best part about Mars is that it's got a TON of natural resources we can use to start a colony... if we get there AFTER the bulk of the comets impact, then we can avoid the shock wave issues... and we'll just have to deal with a climate in flux... and maybe some smaller debris... but unlike EArth... Mars is already a "dead world" - except for bacteria and maybe fungus, small plants, etc... We won't be dealing with losing anything like we would on Earth... I have a lot more to say on this - after I eat and get ENERGIZED!! ha ha - Ktak - I would love to keep this dialogue going, so keep on posting...

In the end when we all start to unpack and get ready to screw up yet another planet, we find out to our amazement (this could be the twist had Shyamalamadingdong been helming this thing) that there are martians living underneath the surface and they don't feel like sharing, so they kick us off their planet, we end up planetless, the end. Or... we fight back, take their land, put them in reservations, etc. After all, who's directing this again?

It's Monday evening - my hangover/exhaustion and desire NOT to work because of weekend madness is now subsiding... (I live in New Orleans, so this is all acceptable..) Today I stumbled upon a fantastic discussion about the 50's classic movie (big orchestra music and drums...) WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE! The discussion went from initial excitement of the remake to an absolutely enthralling discussion about how we could make the science actually work within the confines of this story... and this is what TALKBACKS are for people... not adolescent nonsense about how you HATE JAR JAR... but digging into the genre and having a dialogue... so without furthur adue (sp?) let's rock... Bronson A - a gas giant and Bronson B - a planet similar in size to Earth have been detected on a trajectory that will take them through our solar system... Unfortunately for us, it looks like Bronson A will pass dangerously close to Earth's orbit and actually pull the Earth into it's gravity well and destroy our nice little rock - either by slingshoting the planet into the sun - HOT HOTTER HOTTEST KAPOW!, - or to the farther depths of the solar system - for a nice quick frozen death... OR... Earth will get absorbed into Bronson A in a fiery explosion (much like Shoemaker Levy into Jupiter - but a much BIGGER whallop!) NOW.. the first factors in all of this is a.) how much debris will get ejected (if any) and what kind of havoc will Bronson A play on the orbits of all the planets in our solar system... there is a possibility that Bronson A will frak up the whole system and all the planets will careen out of control throught the solar system smashing into each other and/or spiraling into the sun... OR another possibilty is that only the smaller inner planets will be affected... Earth unfortunately get's destroyed either way - or this story is pretty boring... BUT the real interesting part of the story is this next point... A big problem with the original material (book and movie) is that Bronson B - the Earth sized planet is somehow a paradise that Earthlings can just jump onto and live happily ever after... this is totally unnaceptable even in the sci-fi "Mansquito" times we live in... There is no way in hell that a roque planet coming from the depths of the Oort cloud /or other solar system would be habitable in any shape or form... it would be a frozen rock... and even if it were to thaw out as it got close to the Earth... I still can't imagine that it would be as hospitable as let's say 'MARS'!! And that's where the whole story got really interesting... what about Mars as the last hope for humanity - to escape the impending doom of the EArth... Bronson B would be an absolute mess to deal with... the atmosphere might not expand fast enough (from being frozen solid onto the surface like Pluto) - so there might not be any sort of protective atmosphere for a long time... and even it there were, the whole thawing process might make the surface way too volatile... with geysers blowing and crazy winds, etc... so I think we should forget about Bronson B and focus on Mars as being the future home of humanity... (at least until Bronson B calms down... that's if it still has a place in this movie...) so... MARS; what about Mars... well... assuming Mars also does not get ejected from or into the Sun... and also does not get totally hammered and destroyed by debris from the Earth / Bronson A encounter... Mars could actually benefit from this whole mess... What if Bronson A causes Mars to move close to the sun into a more Earthlike Orbit... what is in the process of Bronson A passing throught he Oort cloud it brings a hail of icy comets to impact all over mars ADDING valuable water ice to it's atmosphere... What if all of this is happening as the Earth prepares for it's destruction, so that when it's time to make the mad dash to Mars using every known rocket / missile / booster enhanced space shuttle fleet we've got to get people and equipement onto the mars surface... so that by the time we get to mars - the main impacts / shockwaves would be over... and we would be inhabiting a Mars in flux, but with the potential to have a signifigantly denser atmosphere with Liquid water on the surface, etc... (from being closer to the sun and from the cometary impact altering the atmosphere...) You could even keep Bronson A and Bronson B in the story and have one planet come first bringing a hail of cometary imacts to Mars and then much later Bronson B would slam into Earth - that would give us time to prepare and also time to let Mars settle down a bit before we haul ass to the "not so Red anymore" planet... I really like the idea of using Mars because the possiblity of life having arisen on Mars in the prehistory of our solar system and then being transplanted to Earth through meteor impacts is compelling when you realize that we are "returning" home to Mars as our savior... and it also allows us to use our knowledge of Mars to our advantage - having studied it for so long... I also like the idea that as a last gasp we jack up every available vehicle we have and start hurting supplies to Mars using nuclear missiles, Delta rockets, Space shuttles, etc... (we can use nuclear propulsion to get there faster - since that is already has been studied and tested)... without anything to lose we could just freaking throw as much as we can at Mars and hope that a small percentage makes it to the surface to help the future colonists, etc... it would be a very dramatic part of the movie having every space faring country desperately trying to get supplies and some remains of our society to mars at any cost... and also having lots of those blow up on launch, explode in space or miss Mars altogether... drama, suspense, excitement! and maybe some cool special effects - but all STILL BASED IN REALITY!... Ok I am splitting this into several posts - so keep on reading to the next one...

Ok... so let's say that the only way to keep this movie plausible is to have Bronson A and/or B - NOT the future home of humanity... but another tool to somehow get Mars into a closer orbit to the sun and also give Mars a whole shite-load of cometary impacts to help thicken it's atmosphere... Like I said before having Bronson A arrive first could allow it to bring a hail of icy comets onto Mars AND also alter Mars' orbit... Then (maybe while Earth's orbit is also in flux and causing mass catastrophe around the globe) Bronson B comes in for the kill... to collide with the Earth absorbing it like Harry does jelly dohnuts... without a crumb left behind.... (no nasty debris to deal with)... so after total and complete chaos on Earth and having any nation that has the cabability hurtling everything they can muster toward Mars using any space capable rocket they have (supplies, records of our history, eventually people... whatever) the remains of humanity arrive on Mars.... HELL... you cold even come up with a scenario where Mars orbit as it moves closer to the sun takes it so close to Earth that we have a really good chance to get TONS of people and equipment there using much smaller rockets... having altered them with experimental nuclear rockets, (nothing to lose, no time to keep testing... just hope for the best)... Mars could be really close to Earth at that point and then it would settle into a better orbit and Earth get's destroyed... The obvious problems here are living on Mars with 1/3 the gravity and living on Mars without being able to live on the surface without space suits and habitats, etc... Mars has plenty of resources we can use to make air and fuel - and maybe the atmosphere after the cometary impacts and the hotter surface would be much denser - allowing people to be on the surface with breathing aparatus - and not have to have space suite (Babylon 5 version of Mars) - I know this is pushing the limit a bit... but maybe this can also work somehow... FUTURE humans on Mars would have a much more Earthlike planet... but the first batch would have it really rough... but HEY! At least some of human civilization survived... and that's better than NONE... until the genetic mutations start to kick in from the inbreeding - formt the small population of "colonists..." - OK that is a different part of the movie... and possible sequel.. ha ha... OK... tear me to shreds now people... I am waiting...

First off props go to radio1_mike, Octaveaeon, Ktak and everybody else who was talking science... and not just being mean-sprited talkback h8ters... Here is what I think should happen in the new movie: Astronomers detect two rogue gas giants (Bronson A and Bronson B) on a trajectory that will take them dangerously through our solar system... It appears that Bronson A will slingshot through the solar system causing orbital havoc to the Oort cloud and inner planets such as Mars, Earth, Venus and Mercury... Bronson B - unfortunately after looking at computer models to our altered orbit after the effects of Bronson A - EArth will spiral INTO Bronson B and be destroyed as it passes dangerously close to our little blue planet... (unlike Bronson A - Bronson B get's slowed down by impacting Pluto on it's way into the solar system)... The first part of the movie shows how Bronson A races through the solar system causing a hail of icy comets in it's wake to impact all over Mars (having the side effect of adding tons of water ice to Mars' atmosphere... and that also means Mars' atmosphere gets a little denser too...) Another effect is that Mars' orbit gets altered so that Mars will begin to orbit the sun in the same habitable zone the Earth is currently orbiting - meaning that Mars will wind up with liquid water on the surface and an even more dense atmosphere...) It also seems that as Mars orbit moves closer into the sun - our two planets will pass dangerously close to each other... causing massive tidal surges on the EArth and possible volcanic eruptions on Mars... (adding more density to the atmosphere)... our moon will also be thrown out of orbit causing even more catastrophic events around the planet... NOW the positive spin on this is that after the computer models show that there is no way to avoid the destruction of the Earth from the future encounter with Bronson B - there is the new possiblity that we can use every possible piece of space technology and experimental craft we have to actually get as many people and equipment to MARS as it passes close to the Earth... the hope is that with a denser atmosphere people can live on the surface without space suits, but with breathing aparatus only... Mars is known to have tons of natural resources allowing us to manufacture oxygen and fuel... and the hope is that we can somehow manage to start a colony on Mars and avoid the exinction of the Human race... it's a long-shot, but we have absolutely nothing to lose... As Bronson A slingshots out of the solar system and back into the depths of space... it forces Mercury's orbit to spiral into the sun causing a massive coronal discharge that strips a large portion of VEnus' atomosphere away... (maybe allowing life to arise on Venus in the distant future - being freed from the crushing atmosphere that has kept it at bay...)... Time goes by and Mars is moving ever closer to the orbit of the Earth... Mass hysteria spreads across the globe as every nation on Earth makes a mad attempt to prepare to send supplies and people to Mars... Bronson B is also on it's own deadly approach having already devoured Pluto... Using nuclear powered booster rockets on existing Space shuttles and rockets, the day has come to make our stand against the wrath of the heavens... As Mars makes it's approach the Earth exhales its last great breath in the form of rockets filled with supplies and colonist all aimed at reaching Mars... it seems few will survive, but as the moon (feeling the effect of the Mars encounter) moves out of orbit - causing massive tidal surges and Earthquakes) there is a feeling of hope for humanity's future... we might survive... As Bronson B makes its final deadly approach to Earth - the Mars colonists make there own final approach to destiny... As the EArth is devoured by Bronson B - hundreds of rockets and the manned vehicles that were able to break EArth orbit arrive at Mars... some fail to enter orbit and slingshot into space forever doomed... others burn up on entry into it's atmosphere... but for a fortunate few... they make it to the mars surface alive... and the hope for humanity's future begins again... As Bronson B settles into it's new orbit around the sun it acts as gravitational magnet sweeping up the remnant debris left over from the collisions throughout the solar system... The humans now living Mars surface have a fighting chance... As the sun rises over the surface of Mars the colonists of Mars realize that Bronson A gave mars a much more hospitable atmosphere and the possiblity that humans can survive on it's surface and underground while they build their new civilization... end of part 1... ha ha - OK... I lost track a bit... and threw in some nice collisons with Pluto and Mercury so the studio execs would have there big explosions... but hey... I was having some fun... so... whattayaguysthink?? Am I crazy to think we can come up with a mathematical model that will allow this to actually work??

OK... after reading my last gigantic post... (I swear I don't have size issues.. ha ha) I will admit several problems with the science... 1. It is highly unlikely that Bronson B would hit Pluto AND Earth... it's more likely that it would hit Pluto and then screw up EArth's orbit... but you never know... 2. If we were to hope to get to Mars as it approaches we would either hit it right away as it grazes past Earth - or we would have to intercept it's orbit at a future date... the future date would allow Mars to be clear of the effects of Bronson B absorbing the Earth... but our best chance for all the rockets to reach Mars would be when Mars is closest... thus my dramatic montage of Colonists landing on Mars as the Earth is destroyed might not work to Mars' advantage... 3. Hell... what would the chances be of getting Mars' atmosphere the perfect density to allow human's to be on the surface without Space suits... (I have no idea... that's another longshot...) OK... I thougth I would shoot myself down before you guys tore me to shreads...

OK... you survived Doomsday... Luckiy Bastard... now look around on the surface of Mars and relax for two seconds before: FLASH FLOOD! TORNADO! HAIL! LIGHTING STORMS! MARTIAN VIRUS'!! VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS!! But you know what... what a sequel that would be, huh?? Mars coming alive after it's new orbit and the discovery of (maybe) past civilizations could be pretty damn cool...

OK... taking this even further... what if after the Mars colonists discover the evidence of a past civilization they realize that - that very same martian civilazion was destroyed by Bronson A & B slingshoting throught the solar system 500 million years ago... and that they also predicted what would happen as the Bronson's would make this last approach...(present day) destroying the Earth... That is a little trippy (sorry)... But maybe a 500 million years ago they (original martians) seeded the Earth to keep life alive after Mars' ecological destruction from the first encounter... (the great boom in life on EArth before the dinosaurs) but knew that this last approach would turn things around... so they planted all there knowledge and technology into underground arcs to be discovered one day when Mars returned to habitability...

Mankind sends an expedition to find out if they can colonise Mars because they've ruined Earth (mineral resource wise) and they find remains of a civilisation that tells them originally, the Martians left Mars and colonised Earth because they ruined Mars (mineral resource wise) and became Earthmen who ... and so on.

(which is still worth reading by the way) has a strong religious thread running through it. Two planets are approaching Earth, one that will destroy it, one that could offer a possible new home to at least some of humanity. This is interpreted as being a divine act by one of the main characters (the blind hostility of the universe would have presumably just had one planet on a collision course). This divine intervention aspect does help to circumvent some of the more unlikely aspects of the story (well, at least it did back in the 30s). Oh and airojam, you're right about Bronson Alpha, the impact with Earth breaks its link with Beta and sends Alpha on a course out of the solar system. Done properly this could be a damn fine movie (the Pal version still stands the test of time). I'm not holding out much hope though...

Cookylamoo... I assumed that it's a Pluto Charon type of arrangement... but then that throws my whole Bronson Alpha arriving way ahead of Bronson Beta theory... maybe they were a dual planetary system thingie... but then as Bronson Beta whacked Pluto... (my dramatic theory) it got slowed down (not likely!) - and then could arrive behind Bronson Alpha... now I am grasping at straws...

The planets in both the book and the original George Pal movie are called Bellus (which will hit the earth), and Zira (which will not). Zira is going to pass the Earth more than a year before the impact of Bellus in the novel, and somewhat less time in the original movie. Zira will be captured by the Sun's gravity, but Bellus will impact with the earth, and because of the speeds, we are talking about an explosion which will anihilate most of both planets matter, leaving a fe comet sized pieces down to pieces as small as gravel (according to the scientists in the novel). What made the book so interesting is that the story is not about the collision, and the destruction of mankind's home, but rather the humanity of the events leading up to the collision. Quiet despair, suicides, and acceptance with unbelievable courage by most, and desperation, deception, violence, looting, rioting, and general mayhem by those whose demonic side overtakes them. Both the novels and the original movie are about one thing and one thing only - HOPE - in mankind's darkest hour, hope allows a handful of people to try the unthinkable, to survive on the new world, frozen as it is. Hope keeps the crews working on the ship (or ships in the novel, as there are a LOT of rich people all over the world). Hope makes the old scientist founder of the one successful launch and landing (Dr. Stanton) stay behind, and keep the pragmatic and pesimistic industrialist who paid for the bulk of the ship with him as the ship departs. Lotteries determine the winners who will be "lucky" enough to go on the ship, but those who worked on the project and who are to be left behind divide up into the best of humanity, defending the ship site, and the worst, who want to attack it and either destroy it or steal it, filling it with so many that there would be no hope of success. Wylie and Balmer (the original authors) believed in humanity, that good would win out over evil, and that even in the worst of times, there are martyred heroes who outnumber the demons. Read the novel, and then watch the movie again. Taking into account the atmosphere of 1951's United States, with nuclear threats, the Iron Curtain falling, and the likelihood of destruction in a nuclear World War III, the message was one of HOPE, not desperation.
