it looks like a washed out mtv video. completely aimed at our ADD peers. way too artsy in some bits--i predict it will be too distracting from the story and you'll leave the theatre thinking "huh?"

cause it's not that good. It's actually quite poor. It requiers you to have read the books and know every character in the film thus making it hard to follow and understand. I don't know if Fox have recut the film to eliminate all the unnesesary parts, like the whole thing about the "Funnel" to make the story flow better. It would help alot.

Oh, by the way, if I wanted to "consider picking this up on 'Import' DVD", I would have, and I wouldn't need the English subs, so speak of your own problems. Needless to say, I won't, since this "film" is such garbage.

How does harry see this film ages before its even out over here he must of seen the dvd which he says has piss poor subs. Ive herd loads of ppl like tarintino have seen it they must have seen the dvd. So how can it be so piss poor if most of the big shots have seen it and said how great it is. The new subs are for the american release which isent even out yet so what version has harry seen.

I get a lot of the DVDs sent from abroad to a local bookstore in my house. That's partly because the post office has a nasty habit of leaving small parcels on the front doorstep of my apartment block if it won't fit the mailbox. And by strange co-incidence, the same day the only Russian film I've bought on DVD arrived there, there was a couple of Russians inside the store, the only time I've ever seen any. Anyway, I asked one of them if they were Russian (they were a bit guarded at this point) and then I showed them the DVD box. It was probably the last thing they were expecting to see. Which is probably why he said "Oh My God!". His opinion of the film - warned me that I might be disappointed and that he had no intention to see it. Not a completely uncommon reaction amongst Russians even depsite its success I hear. I also seem to remember he looked at the box for an awfully long time as I'm quite sure it was the last thing he expected to see in Eastern Sydney ... Then he went back to looking for maps of Melbourne. I don't think he was in an increased hurry to leave the city ...

The reality is if the film is that good, then critical word-of-mouth will supercede the number of people who 1) have a clue as to where to find imports and 2) have access to zero region players. You know that 100% of the importers are from the film-geek world, but they are a sliver of the viewing public. So save the tears for Searchlight, because it makes you look like you've got more than a personal stake in this flick, coughRideWithTheDevilcough...

This movie is partially popular because it is based on a very popular (and most excelent) Russian book (part of a trilogy, thus movie trilogy). And this movie does not do it justice - neither in special effects nor in story. I would love to see this done right, but this would be the most expensive series ever. BTW, The movie opens with the battle scene that takes place in 15th century (subtitle says 1492, I think) and leads to the "Deal" - Yet everyone, includincg the commercial, keeps talking about "thousand years ago" - WTF???

i was really excited after reading a lot of stuff on the internet about this movie(mostly harry) and i came across it a few weeks ago. i have to say that i wasn't impressed at all...it was decent, yeah, but not nearly as great as some people are making it sound. for one, in some parts of the movie, you can tell it's just trying to be "cool" and it just doesn't work...the camera work is not the greatest, lots of odd angles and quick cuts in an attempt to be stylish/different which works for some of the scenes but definitely not for others. my biggest gripe is the lack of action...a movie about the watchers of light and dark forces should have some cool action instead of a scene where some guy in sunglasses gets his ass kicked and then stabbed with scissors as the action highlight of the film. this movie will not do well in the theaters it plays at.

WTF? That's the worst product placement I've ever seen. As for the film? Hate to be repetitive, but it was good, but not great. Nicely shot, in a geek baiting way, but the story wasn't anything I haven't seen before in a myriad of other flicks. The FX were pretty good for a foreign flick though, I guess that's where all the Nescafe money went.......

how a good editor can make even the worst of films look great? I am sorry, but I saw an imported DVD of this film about 4 months ago and was bored to tears. It had great special effects, but for they were used for things that didn't make sense (ie, a screw falling off of a plane, down a chimney, and into a pot of food cooking in the kitchen of one of the characters.) THe fights would have been good, if they were actually fights, instead of watching the main character get his ass handed to him by a random vampire holding a pair of scissors, then only being able to get away because he gets in a lucky hit in to save his life. I don't want to dissapoint those of you who are really anticipating this film (as I was), but through most of the movie, my friends and I were completely baffled (and bored) by what was happening. Some of this was caused by the horrible traslation on the DVD. Its hard to get the point of a film when you can only understand about 2/3 of what everyone is talking about. Unfortunately, most of the problem is the film itself, it is shot well (the were creature in the first 10 minutes is awesome), and has a great premise, but that is it. Johnny Mnemonic had a good premise and good special effects, and look at how legendary it is now. Sad as this is, Johnny was better than the "legendary" Nightwatch.

I totally understand. And it is not just the subtitles that cause people to be baffled - I know many russian speaking people (tends to be older crowd who has not read the book nor care to) who felt the same way. The movie does not bother to explain most things and unless you've read the book many things are very confusing. Unfortunately in addition to not explaining things they take some serious liberties with the story, so even when you've read the book, some things are annoying. For example that "fight" scene you mention is not supposed to be much of one - In the book all registered "dark ones" have a special seal on them which destroys them when triggered by NightWatch (vice versa with "light ones" and DayWatch) - which is how he gets to fairly easily kill the vampire (he misses the girl because she runs off and she is not registered). But in absence of that seal, it would make sense for him to get his ass kicked if it WAS an actuall fight. He is a relatively low power mage and is a computer programmer for the watch and not at all a field operative. He was doing a training rotation in the field (officially because they were short staffed, but really because the heads of both Watches are playing an intricate chess game and he was used as a pond.) I am guessing they decided to seriously hurt him to show the great power that his boss has. Another thing that was somewhat confusing and annoying is the driving. There is nothing particularly special about their vehicles, just that powerful enough mages are capable of seeing lines of probability and thus drive very fast safely. I am not sure what that business with little nitro jets coming out the tail pipe was about. Part of me hopes that the big deal about subtitles is the addition of a narrator back story - comic book style - this may go a long way towards making the movie a lot more watchable. As a thing of Nescafe, I saw somewhere a quote from the director saying that the hideous product placement was a jab at american cinema - he seemed most amused by it.

yup, the little things, like flames shooting out of the van's exhaust and having it do a cartwheel just looked plain cheesy and just made it seem like they're trying too hard to make the movie cool. the 13 flashbacks to the lady on the train got pretty annoying too.
