Ok, I actually LIKED the movie, I thought it was a GOOD adaptation of the source material, it treated them with respect, and overall the movie wasn't bad. Frankly, it was better than I thought it would be and I say that even as a longtime geeky comics fan...but YOUR statement, Balltouchers, is a truly fan boyish hyperbole of the groan-inducing kind. Yeah, there's never been a movie like it before. There's NEVER been a crime noir -- no, no, correction -- there's NEVER been a black & white crime noir film before, nor has their ever been a star-packed film or a comic adaptation film or even a film employing full-out CGI backgrounds. Seriously, dude, before making such statements ever again, you really need to get out of the house more and develop a sense and appreciation of actual film history.

The third one applies in Marv's story, but not the other two in my opinion. I wouldn't exactly call it thought provoking, but yeah everything else. Then again, I don't consider most noir films to be particularly thought-provoking.

Bash Harry all you want, but in this case the critcs agree with him. Sin City is at 80% at rotten tomatoes, which is damn good. Some of those are full-on raves, like Ebert's. The only mainstream release of 2005 that's higher is Millions. And what the fuck does Blade Runner have to do with Sin City, BR came out 23 years ago? Why don't we just compare it to Gone With the Wind?

And just how much weight SHOULD we give Ebert's "full on rave", Minderbender. For the record, he gave SIN CITY 4 stars, but he ALSO gave SKY CAPTAIN a same 4 stars for all the same reasons. So that should tell you something. Besides right alongside Sin City he gave BEAUTY SHOP 3 stars! What the fuck!?

After all, I'm with you this time as well on your thoughts regarded BLADERUNNER. Wanted to love it, I like Harrision Ford, I figured Douglas Trumball would turn in great effects and naturally figured Ridley Scott would direct it gorgeously...yet in the end, that movie's the cure for insomnia. And the version with Ford's hammy narration is the cure for anything stuck in your teeth since you'll work it out due to grating them so much. I know it's heresy to be a SciFi film fan and be against BLADERUNNER, but the best thing I like about that movie is the Marvel Comics adaptation that Al (EC scifi comics legend) Williamson drew. Now THAT was gorgeous. Actually, so was the movie, but it was just boring as hell. Maybe if down a few beers and I play the DVD in another regional language like French or something and imagine all-new dialogue that'll help...

...It's not really sensible to compare BR to SC. Sure, there's film-noir aspects in both, but again two vastly diffrent types of films. And while BR is a good film, Gilliam's "Brazil" is a hell of a lot better & more interesting! "Sin City" was damn entertaining, period. Not every movie NEEDS compelling "real-life" drama & overtly intricate characters. Archtypes often serve just fine... Look at any mythology. It's all about archtypes, fun to read, and interesting in its own way.

it's like watching John Carpenter's Vampires and From Dusk Tiol Dawn 2 Blood Money and then starting to wax philisophical about the vampire mythology and/or the entire genre of vampire film at large.
