That sounds like an amazing Episode. As much as I enjoyed the first batch of Clone Wars (and I'm a huge Samurai Jack fan), I thought it was mostly action directed at bitter fanboys. This sounds like they're focusing a lot more on character development this time around. Flashbacks, romance, and a little coming of age. Awesome news,

Yeah, you're so jaded and cynical. Sorry, I don't remember having any kind of adolescent sexual reaction to either the Phantom Menace trailer or the film itself, you're on your own there. And Star Wars as a phenomenom has nothing to make up for, especially not to you, so there goes your evaluation. AND you're a complete and total tool if you think Episode 3 is titled "revenge of the empire." And lastly, Matrix Revolutions contains one of the best superhero fight scenes of all time, and was, in actuality, a better film than the already very good Matrix Reloaded. I know, I know, you're an adult, right, and you can't like Star Wars anymore. Go watch Magnolia again and shut the fuck up.

...And SITH will be THE -- yes, "the" in capital letters -- movie experience of the summer, if not the year. This baby's operating on overdrive. As much as some try to bring up PHANTOM MENACE and the excitement it too initially created (being the first new Star Wars film in ages), I think the excitement over SITH is actually higher simply because this is the one film everyone truly wanted to see: the corruption of Anakin, the elimination of the Jedi, the rise of the Empire, the DUEL, and Vader born. Plus we get Chewbacca back in action for good measure. Hell, everyone I know is pumped up about seeing this -- even my own freakin' DAD who's in his seventies mentioned on the phone the other day that he wanted to see this one in the theater (and he passed on both prequels). There's a tangible feeling in the air that Lucas has delivered and, timing wise, its coming when people really are in a Star Wars mood and looking forward to flooding into theaters for a fun summer movie community experience. So naturally the only ones NOT jazzed about all this are the usual whiners around here who just want to piss and moan about the prequels so they can feel culturally hip somehow for dissing it. Fine, you suckwads -- stay home. Boo fucking hoo. You think we'll miss you? Your absence means zip to the rest of us except the added benefit of shorter popcorn lines.

I find that odd. Even Phantom Menace cleaned up the year it was released AND entered the top 5 highest grossing films of all time list. AOTC, although many fans agree it is a better film than Menace, BARELY made 300 million at the (domestic) box office.....Lucas should just make a high budget Star wars animated film. NOT a CGI film, but a traditionally animated Disney-quality film. I would prefer that to the 75% CGI films he is currently churning out. He is basically making cartoons with real actors inserted into scenes.

We, those that complain about the prequels, don't dislike Star Wars. We don't think that, in our adulthood, it's no longer "cool" to enjoy Star Wars. We dislike Han shooting first. Why? Why do that? To dumb down a beloved character? To make that character less complex, ie more fully a good guy than a scoundrel at the beginning of his tale, thereby lessening the importance of his character arc over 3 films? To give in to modern pressures regarding gun control or some such, to the point of altering your art from the past (the idea of altering art that represents attitudes of a past era in order to make it fit in better with the attitudes of the current era is absolutely appaling to me!)? Well, whatever the reason, it showed some type of weakness on Lucas' part. So we don't like it and complain. Further, we dislike the prequels that, quite simply, don't measure up to those still- great films of the OT. It isn't our fault that Lucas has given us a double-dose of bland, poorly-written, poorly acted (by Hayden), but effects-laden films to take over all our childhood fantasies of what the Clone Wars were, what Anakin was like, what drove him. It would have been fine, in fact preffered, had Lucas came up with a story that differed from our fantasies...if only that story were good and told in a compelling way. The story that Lucas is telling with the prequels is neither good not told in a compelling way. It isn't our fault that you prequel apologists are willing to forgive any amount of poor film making, just because it has a story crawl, a few screen wipes, and "Star Wars" attached to the title. Some of us believe that Star Wars is made up of more than story crawls and screen wipes. Some of us remember the glory of the OT, and some of us were hoping to have it back in the prequels. As I understand it, in the 70s Star Wars was a phenomenon. There was no phenomenon here, because there was nothing worthy of one. Not in films which were little more than glorified video game and excuses for multiple toy lines. Not in films dumbed down for children. The original Star Wars was not dumbed down, and as a kid I still totally loved it. And as an adult, I still totally love it. Why Lucas decided that for the prequels that kids were the mian audience and that they only like kiddy things, and that adults aren't all that important, is beyond me, beyond us. I love the OT, even ROTJedi and Ewoks, still to this day. I enjoy most of Lucas' 1997 updates. I don't hate Star Wars, and I will never, ever outgrow it. But I also love movies; I know great ones, and I know bad ones. And the prequels are somewhere in the middle, and some of us feel that thats a damn shame. I wish the new movies were better. I wish, truly, that the prequels, as they've been made, could have sparked in me the magic that they've sparked in some people at this site. I envy you prequel lovers, because I was dying to experience that magic again, that magic that you claim to find in these new films. But it wasn't there for me, the movies didn't bring it. For many of us. And even if you feel totally fulfilled, don't you wonder why the rest of us don't? Don't you think it's a problem that Lucas couldn't impress the majority (and we are a majority) of his installed fanbase? That Star Wars still gets 4 stars from the same critics who give Phantom Menace 2 or 2,5? Why is it OUR fault that the movies aren't great? Has it ever occured to you bozos that maybe the movies were lacking something? Anyway, I don't like the prequels. But I'm still looking forward to the third one. But with Lucas' recent track record I'm not going to expect too much. Maybe it will be great. I'm hoping it will; but even if it is that doesn't mean the other 2 are magically redeemed, or made better movies.

I also advise everyone to buy the book "Labyrinth of Evil" because you get more of backstory on Grievous and you find out that Darth Sidious is going to get caught REAL soon....

The fact that the anti-prequel trolls liked the OT doesn't change the fact that they're going into threads that they know are about the prequels just to bash them with usually nonsensical rantings. That's counterproductive and tiresome, not to mention a waste of time on everyone, especially the trolls part. And calling people who liked the prequels "apologists" is pretty smarmy. I'm not apologising for anything. I just have a different opinion that you. And I think you're looking at the OT through rose colored glasses if you're whining about the PT having sub-par acting and too many FX......My point is this. All these SW threads are about something specific going on with the PT or Clone Wars. No one wants to hear yours or anyone else's overall philosophy of the PT vs the OT. ...you really are making me a little self conscious about actually looking forward to the next Star Wars movie, what with all your "it will own you, bitches" and calling of prequel critics "homos." Are you all regressing to age 7 through 10 or whatever you were when Star Wars was first released? I was 5 and remember it very fondly. And I've never seen a better sci fi film than Empire (Wrath of Khan comes close). Jedi was a mediocre ending to a good trilogy, at best. But I was bitterly disappointed by the first two prequels. So much so that I didn't even watch Clone Wars until a friend promised me I'd enjoy it (and he didn't lie). But Clone Wars doesn't make the prequels thus far any better. What it has done is rekindled some of the excitement I haven't felt since the opening day of Episode I (when 20 years of anticipation were dashed in the shitpile that was the Phantom Menace). I am looking forward to Revenge of the Sith more than perhaps any other movie ever made... but I have no knowledge or certitude that it won't suck just as many donkey balls as Menace or Clones (which is really only about as bad as Jedi, and neither of those deep throated half as many burros as Menace). It's possible to like some Star Wars movies and not others. It doesn't make you gay or a bitch or anything other than discerning. A lot of you are sounding more like religous zealots than simple fanatics and, quite honestly, you're embarrassing the hell out of normal people who happen to enjoy Star Wars when it's good. I hope none of you are at the screening of Sith I attend, because I really don't want to be associated with any of you if this is the way you're going to behave.

I agree with you Childe Roland (beware Dandelo!). Except for one thing - I like Phantom better (I'm in a vast minority there). To me, Clones was little more than a live-action video game, no better than Matt Leblanc's "Lost in Space" or the like. I thought Lucas really dropped the ball with Anakin's characterization in that one, as we start to see him fall to the dark side. Hayden just killed him for me. And I didn't like the dialogue in his scenes, either, which is Lucas' own fault.

"the glory of the OT" as you put it, is over for SW and even the best made SW movie today would get nitpicked apart, because we live in a different time. A cynical time. You're basing your feelings on the OT on feelings we all had as kids at that time, when it was something fresh and new. In a world that hadn't yet been spoiled by the big overbloated blockbusters of today. SW peaked in 77. Yet i'm not niave, I know the acting is poor in the prequels and they're not as exciting as the OT, but nothing will ever be. I just don't let it bother me as much as it bothers you, yes perhaps I am forgiving, but i'm also not holding on as tight as you are. I've simply let things go. I take the movies for what they are, sort of like the past in real life, it's not all good and you wish you could change the crappy parts, but you can't and you accept it. I actually enjoyed AOTC and thats not denial, not as much as the OT films, but I got into Obi-Wan's character and story arch. Hayden was horrible, but i got thru it. Now TPM is another story. I'll be honest it's boring to watch today, but it's part of SW and that's that, why fight it? You can't win MiserableRainGod, the more you strike Lucas down, the more powerful he will become.

Ok, why do I like the prequels. The story. I said it, the story. The Machivellian way Palpatine rises to power is a lot more intelligent than people give it credit for, and has relevance in the real world. The acting? I think it's a toss up. Natalie and Hayden had some clunky moments but Ewan, Ian, Lee, and Neeson are great. I don't recall Hamill and Ford being great thespians in the OT. Dialogue? This is where I think a lot of people just don't get it. Yes, Anakin's dialogue to Padme was painfull. IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE. The guy isn't James Bond. He's a kid raised by virgins trying to talk to a senator that h'e been thinking about for 10 years. He's going to say embarassingly trite things to a girl way out of his league. Too many FX? I have no problem with the amount of FX in the fillm. I thought they blended with the live action very well and made the SW universe more interesting by creating worlds that couldn't have been done with regular sets. Ok, TPM was a little too kiddie. Lucas was going for a sharp contrast between it and Episode III and may have gone a little far. But seeing the trilogy as a whole, Episode III is so dark that it will balance out. As for saying that it looked like a video game, I don't know how to respond to that. Every Star Wars movie can be distilled into a video game. And don't try to say that the OT had more human drama because it didn't. Anyway that's my opinion, that's all it is. I repeat my statement that these threads are about specific topics. The prequels suck, Star Wars sucks, everything not directed by Peter Jackson sucks. We get it. We don't need to read it IN EVERY GODDAMN THREAD. So there's my "apology" for the PT. Can I go now?

I respect your points, even though I disagree with most of what you say. One thing I just can't fathom, however, is how you can say that "most" people dislike the prequels. Where do you get that information? At Rotten Tomatoes, both rate fresh. Both have grossed enough to earn spots on the list of top-grossing films of all time. So how do you get that "most" people are down on the PT? Maybe most people that post on internet sites like this one may dilike them, but that really doesn't count for much when you are comparing it to the population as a whole.

The Phantom Menace may have been disappointing to some, but can't you at least see that it's 10 times better than nearly every other blockbuster? To me, the main problem with TPM is that the storyline is too disconnected from the Saga as a whole. Like some poster said, it would have been better if Attack of the Clones was modified to be Episode 1... although that's just wishful thinking. I love TPM for just being a great adventure and I like all of Ian McDiarmid's scenes, he's a fucking great actor. Attack of the Clones is brilliant. Takes the large story strands of TPM and goes full speed with them. Just love how everything comes together (although I could have done without Jango Fett, yes he was uber-cool, but why does the universe have to be THAT small?). Anyway, I'm as excited about Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith as I could possibly be. Everything I've seen looks fantastic. Lucas may screw up a lot of kids with this film, kind of like Tranformers The Movie screwed me up, when they killed Optimus Prime. Although kids have the back-up of The Original Trilogy to watch, so they can see that everything worked out ok... except for the millions and millions of people that were massacred by The Empire over Palpatine's reign. One thing I'm dying to see is just how fucked up Anakin gets, both mentally and physically. I also can't wait to get my Clone Wars DVD.

I'll just say that no, I cannot see that even after eating the mushrooms off a five-day-old unrefrigerated pizza. It's a poor movie by movie-going standards and a poor Star Wars movie by the standards set by the Star Wars films that came before (and, yes, even after) it. It was slow-moving, poorly acted, unfocused and gimmicky to the point of feeling like a two-plus-hour toy commercial. I know that folks will argue all of Star Wars has been a toy commercial by design, but Lucas made some damned entertaining movies out of those first two toy commercials and really only ruined the third when he took the kiddie-focused target marketing to the extreme in the third act (Ewoks instead of Wookies for the final confrontation). To hold up Phantom Menace in particular as a great film shows a very narrow perspective concerning the fine art of cinematic storytelling and is really the problem with people who blindly defend the prequels regardless of what they contain. You are lowering the bar for Lucas so that as long as he doesn't take a steamy crap and then rub his shit-smeared fat ass all over the lens, you'll praise him for making a great film. Both Attack of the Clones and Jedi had moments of the whimsical energy that empowered New Hope and the brilliant storytelling that set Empire so far apart, but they were fleeting moments. If he can capture and sustain either for even two-thirds of Episode II, it could be a good movie. But just because something is Star Wars doesn't automatically make it great (just ask all the fans of Star Trek who had to endure insult after injury from Berman and Braga for umpteen years before a network finally grew the balls to pull the plug on them). It's called perspective. Before making sweeping comparitive statements about all of filmdom, you should try some.

They are top-notch visual storytelling, and they have more substance (much of it mildly subversive) than then OT. But of course, that's just my subjective opinion. That said, anyone who thinks there can be such a thing as an OBjective opinion of (even popular) art (like, "These prequels suck, and you gotta at least admit that they suck, even if you like them") is a total fucking Philistine. The prequels are DIFFERENT than the OT - less fun, more political, less organic, more visually gorgeous. Different, but equal, and in some ways (here it comes) better. AS films, as representations of Lucas's state of mind (and his opinion of THIS country at the time of his making the prequels), they come closer to the definition of "films of ideas" than the old trilogy.

This has devolved into name calling with few legitimate points being made. Do the prequels have some embarassingly bad lines of dialogue? Yes. Did Return of the Jedi? You bet. Are there some moments of bad acting/bad line readings in the prequels? Yes. Are there the same in Return of the Jedi? Yeah, and from "professionals" Fisher and Ford. What's with the revisionist history? There were more alien toy promos in Jabba's Palace than all of The Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones. As for Lucas being a shitty director I laugh in your ignorant faces. The man is a BRILLIANT shot composer. Perhaps not on the level of Spielberg (who I'm not the biggest fan of), but certainly more than Peter Jackson (whom I still admire). As far as directing action scenes, there aren't many directors better than Lucas. I'd like someone to tell me how the pod race, the 3 way saber fight in TPM, or the entire arena sequence of AOTC were poorly directed. Also, for you AICNers with actual KNOWLEDGE OF FILM HISTORY AND WORLD CINEMA, there's a nod to Kurosawa's Kagemusha in the first prequel, and to Ford's The Searchers in the second (a film Lucas also referenced in A New Hope). He's not just throwing these things in for the hell of it. There's a lot more going on in these films than people want to give GL credit for because they're just looking at the surface. I'd like to credit Krinkle who pointed out that the prequels have a lot more "substance" to them. The plot and machinations of Sidious are rather Shakespearean. And the comments Lucas is making on democratic governments giving way to tyranny IS subversive, whether you find that laughable or not, considering it's in a family film. But hey, if you think popcorn like Spider-Man has more substance because the surface dialogue is less cheesy, you're welcome to it. Because in 50 years Star Wars will be AS A WHOLE as loved as it ever was. And trendy flash like The Matrix sequels will be discarded for the second-rate kitchen sink that they are.

If you want to argue the dialogue on the prequels vs. the original trilogy, which has more dorkier lines or acting interpretations, we can have that argument. To me, that's more subjective. But as for Lucas' overall directoral eye towards shot composing AND his eye towards the final edit, I agree with you, Lazarus. Turn down the sound if the dialogue bothers you so much on PH and AOTC. But watching them as silent films, both films ARE brilliantly composed -- I dare say far more so than the LOTR films, the Matrix films, the Spider-man films, the Potter films et al. Amongst modern directors, Lucas' visual sense and his ability to stage action is matched only by Spielberg and Cameron.

No one's asking you to like the prequels or blindly love everything Star Wars. My point is that WE GET IT. We've heard all this shit before and we don't need to hear it in Every.Single.Fucking.Star Wars.Related.Talkback. These talkbacks are about specific things going on with Episode III or the Clone Wars. They're not about whether or not Lucas raped your childhood. And you apparently also ignored the point of my post in your haste to attack it and my perspective. All I was saying was that to claim Phantom Menace is a better movie than any other blockbuster out there is narrow-minded and ignoring the relative merits of other films, especially since - even among the devout such as yourself - Menace is largely regarded as the worst of the "good enough because it's Star Wars" prequels so far. And I never claimed to "hate" the prequels as a whole. If you look at the same post you so hurriedly attempted (and failed) to debunk, you'll see that I hold Attack of the CLones in about as high regard as I do Jedi, meaning it's about a third-to-half a good movie. It's hampered by bad performances from its leads and a scattershot approach to story telling, but still had some genuinely fun moments. And in case you missed it, I'll reiterate again that I am hopeful Episode III will be even better... perhaps even three-quarters-to-all of a good film. Because I'd love not to hate it. I'm sorry if it hurts your feelings that not everyone loves all Star Wars unconditionally, but you need to pull your fingers out of your ears and Lucas' dick out of your mouth before attempting to rationally argue with someone who's making an even-handed point.

But you still miss the meat of the points I've made in your desperation to invalidate any viewpoint that's not your own (i.e. all star wars is sacred and anyone who doesn't love it all can't love any of it). Hey Finch, I don't know if you'll even see this or not, but I wanted to respond to you, since you took the time to write to me. For why I saw that most Star Wars fans don't care too much for the prequels: I have no scientific stats; I guess it's a matter of personal experience. Among my friends I count a huge number of Star Wars fanatics. Hyperspace accounts, cardboard cutouts of Han Solo in their bedrooms, Expanded Universe readers, Trivia, Role-Playing game, knows-everything-about-every-v ehicle types of guys and gals. Not a single one of them liked the prequels so far. I also have a number of casual-fan friends (the way I count myself) and not a single one of them thinks the prequels are worthy of Star Wars. Except for right here at AICN, I've never come in contact with anyone who felt that they were great movies, or that they even held a candle to the original, ROTJedi included. I've read lots and lots of professional reviews as well, and whereas Star Wars and Empire are 4 star winners across the board, the prequels, generally, get 2.5 stars. I've never voted at rotten tomatoes, so I can't attest to what it says or how accurate it is...I just know it doesn;t include my vote.

From what I've read... both the SW PT haters and lovers have got to stop shoving their shit down everyone's throats. Who the fuck cares. I don't care if you hate the movies or like them, cause I only care what "I" like. I loved the OT. I like the PT. I would never say the PT suck! They're well made films, with a hell of a lot of imagination and effort that went into them. They're decent films. But the reason I like the OT more is because of the great characters and the time frame from when they came out.

Clone Wars season 1 was the best Star Wars stuff since the original trilogy. I have no doubt (from the description above) that season 2 will be more of the same great, smart storytelling. Put these guys in charge of the new live-action series ... NOW.

but it's obviously hard for sarcasm to translate. Yeah, I really love your "facility for the language." I'd be impressed if we were speaking, but c'mon. Roland you're completely entitled to your opinion, but I think you're just about as wrong as can be. So sorry the Prequel Trilogy isn't up to your high standard of film-making. That makes me glad you're not in charge of anything that I care about. You're being a bit hyperbolic when you state that I'll defend ANYTHING Star Wars. I'm not here defending either Ewok movie or any of the Holiday Specials or the Droids or Ewok cartoons. I'm saying that I'm excited for Episode III. My expectation is that ROTS is going to be a great Star Wars film. I'm betting that I'll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed TPM and AOTC. From my perspective, all five of the Star Wars films are great, and Episode III will be, also. This is different from Batman Begins in that I do NOT get excited by what I've seen. From my perspective, Batman Begins looks shitty. From your perspective, the rubber Batsuit looks "bad-ass." Great!
