I mean, puh-lease. Nowhere in the comics do I remember Clark Kent's origin taking this long. On the other hand, at least we're not getting Beppo or any other cockamamie Silver Age stuff on Smallville. Glad to hear this rumor's bullshit as well. ...but I've seen a couple of episodes and I understand it has a pretty big following. I think WB might've missed a pretty easy to catch boat (and the opportunity to lock in a fan base) by not ending Smallville and transplanting the star to the Superman movie. They wouldn't even have had to carry all the Smallville plot baggage. Just use the same actor as Supes and don't do anything in the movie that directly contradicts the series. That way tv fans could pretend it's a continuation with Supes looking young as ever and everyone else having aged while new movie fans could come in cold and enjoy a Superman movie without a lot of catching up to do. Singer's already doing a movie that preserves the memory of the Donner/Reeve Superman by not contradicting that continuity. So why not? But it was their call to make.

unfortunately. I don't know much about Brandon Routh, but I don't think Spacey is a good choice for Luthor - he's kind of annoying, and a snob. And I dont know if this is true or not but, I don't like Jude Law as Zod either; he's too much of a pretty boy - and I have to agree with Chris Rock that he's overexposed. Not sure how much you can tell just by the casting but it already seems uninspired.

Seriously, the series has been pretty much "Archie" with super powers, complete with Betty and Veronica. Season 3 sucked hind tit, and season 4 was so embarrassing I stopped watching after the second episode. Welling was the natural choice to plays Supes (what with the built-in following and all), but Warner Bros as we all know have an uncanny ability to make bad decisions.

How can anyone say "the last two seasons have really sucked" with a straight face? If they're such shitty episodes, why would you keep making time to WATCH them?!? I bet half the people who say that Smallville sucks have watched less than one season's worth of episodes. Who would continue watching a show that they don't like? Masochists? Smallville, in my opinion, is one of the more exceptional shows on television that is aimed at the teen and 20-something crowd. The continuity from episode to episode is something that is sorely lacking in most shows on television today. Is it Oscar-quality acting? No, of course not, nor would I expect it to be. This is a fantasy/sci-fi/superhero genre. It's supposed to be over-the-top. The writers of Smallville do a great job; I love the numerous "inside" references to the Superman mythos. I used to love Lois & Clark back in the day (a lot of the 4th season excepted), but Smallville does a better job by far, and much better than any other comic-related TV show that's ever been on the air. That said, as much as I would like to see Tom Welling don the tights and cape, I would prefer to see it in the very last episode of Smallville, and not in a major motion picture. He just doesn't have the star quality, the presence, etc. to pull off movie Superman. Not that I know Brandon Routh can, but I do like the fact that he is an unknown and that none of us can judge prior work because none of us have seen any. I will put my trust in Bryan Singer's judgment since he did so well with the X-Men films. I think Spacey will make an awesome Lex; my main hesitance is with Kate Bosworth. I hope she can pull off Lois with the kind of no-nonsense attitude that embodies the character. Any which way, the movie is happening (I've been following its inception since it was Kevin Smith and Nicholas Cage), there ain't nothing we can do but sit back and wait ... too long of a wait!

I agree with others. The quote "that just can't seem to face the realization that the best Superman for the part wasn't on SMALLVILLE" was a totally cheap shot considering Welling HASN'T actually put on the suit and HASN'T played Superman on Smallville, and instead has merely had the chance to play the younger, plain clothes Clark -- which he's done fine by. So going by that, and trying to determine who's the better Superman, let's compare plain clothes Welling to plain clothes Routh's soap opera work -- which by most accounts of soap fans was incredibly amateurish and weak. In fact, I seem to recall reading Routh was FIRED from his soap work for being such a shitty actor. So the only thing we know here for sure is that (1) Harry is taking Singer's side and acting as his P.R. flack and to do, he's willing to take a cheap shot at another actor that many were pulling for or simply like... and (2) he's taking the word of Singer on total face value (I mean, it's not like Singer has sent Harry dailies of Routh in action) -- which as someone else pointed out, what's HE supposed to say? I mean, does Harry REALLY think Singer's gonna say "I fucked up! The kid can't act! But we're going with it and I'll try to edit around it!" on the phone? As for how good Routh will be, we'll see. But he'd better be fucking amazing because Singer, Spacey, Bosworth, production qualities (script, design, effects, etc.) aside, this whole movie rests and falls on Routh's shoulders PERIOD. Because the moment the first stills of him in costume are released and people start muttering "He's too wimpy looking, no bulk" or "He's got a big nose! He's nowhere near as handsome or Superman-looking as Christopher Reeve was!" (and Routh does have a big schnoz, by the way), this movie will have a good first weekend or so, but quickly die off due to bad worth of mouth as people say "the movie's ok, but Superman himself sucks. Why did they miscast someone like that in the LEAD?" At which point Warner's can kiss their investment and the franchise good-bye for another 10-15 years.

This is coming from a former fan of the show. I loved it at first. I thought, "what a fantastic idea! show Clark as he tries to cope with these powers in his formidable teen years and show Lex before he became the evil bastard we know and love! Great!" But the "monster of the week" plot device, the slow as molasses character development, the way the show ALWAYS goes back to status quo after a season finale that SHOULD have shook things up. But by the next season, everything is back to normal and people that should've been dead, are miraculously alive (I'm looking at you Cloe). The fact that Clark basically has a legion of super powered psychos that know about his secret is disconcerting. The time it has taken for him to reveal his secret to Lana is stupid. His token black friend Pete knows, yet he won't tell the love of his life when she clearly suspects that he is hiding something and this suspicion is the only obstacle to his being with her. Sigh. Yes, I used to be a fan, obviously, but the piss poor writing, lack of balls to really shake things up, and uninteresting characters really make the show unbearable to watch. Even if Bruce Wayne finally showed up I'd be hard pressed to find the desire to actually watch the show because I know his presence will have no impact on the lives of the characters. I guess I'm just used to people like Joss Whedon who has the right philosophy of "if your characters are too happy - somebody has to die". And when a character dies, they typically stay dead (ghosts, flashbacks, etc not withstanding). And this typically affects the characters in a way that CHANGES the show forever. Every season of Buffy and Angel were completely different from their predeccesors. I can't tell what season an episode of Smallville. What was the original point again? Oh yeah, Tom Welling would suck in a big screen version of Superman. And Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor? Sweet, sweet, bad asssss.

Your dead right -- this is a SUPERMAN movie, one of the true remaining icons in people's minds of all ages. They EXPECT something very particular. Even more so because, let's face it, Christopher Reeve was truly sent from Heaven to play the role and he's now burned so much in people's minds. He was just the picture perfect incarnation across the board (looks, acting, body, tone of voice, you name it) of what people THOUGHT Superman should look like onscreen. So as Triumph noted, it won't matter if the script is good or bad (well, we HOPE it's good, that goes without saying!) nor will production design or effects or Singer's direction or even the other actors matter. If people seated in the theater DON'T buy into Routh, it's all over. Game over. Because even while you'll try to sit there and enjoy the rest of the movie or some aspect of it, if Routh isn't pitch perfect every time he walks onscreen you'll suddenly be taken OUT of the movie and left sitting there thinking, "Wow, this guy really was a bad choice. You're telling me with all the hunky, good-looking, square-jawed actors in Hollywood or TV or stage, employed or unemployed, that THIS was the best you could find?" So I'll keep my fingers crossed for now. I'm pretty anxious about seeing the first still of Routh OFFICIALLY in costume, from (hopefully) having hit the gym as well...

and I'm not trying to be a dick, but honestly I think so many peole stuck with the show because they were hoping it'd get better. Like I stated in my last post, I was a fan for awhile. I thought it was hip, I dug the references like crazy, and the show had a certain potential for greatness. But it was squandered with bad pacing and character development. I lost my patience and I think a lot of the people you mention that watched the show for so long and than gave up lost their patience too. They want to see changes - they don't want to see a clean slate every season. It seems pointless. You can't take any major story arc seriously because you know by next season everything will be back to normal, everyone that died will be back to life, and everyone will forgive and forget. But I seriously loved the show at first - it reminded me of Marvel's Ultimate line of comic books which rewrite popular titles such as X-Men and Spider-man for the 21sth century. The problem with Smallville boils down with this: the creative team has no backbone to stick to their guns. I'll give Smallville this: they always have fantastic season finales that really leave me wondering what'll happen next. The creative team goes to the edge... but then they look down and run away screaming like girly men. And I couldn't take it anymore.

Well you certainly have your opinion. I mean no disrespect as well, but I'm curious as to whether or not you've ever collected comic books, the Superman books in particular. I've been a Superman fan since '92 -- yes, the death arc -- and haven't looked back. Though I don't have the funds or time to keep up with the books now, I have read enough comics over the past 12 years to understand that in such a world, the old rule rings true ... nobody's dead unless you see a body -- and even then you should be suspicious. Why would it be any different in a TV show based on the same subject matter? I'm sorry, but Chloe not being dead is hardly a downer. No changes? Pete Ross is no longer on the show; a new character has joined the cast, Clark and Lana have had their relationship ups and downs and now she happens to be with the new character, NOT Clark ... Lionel Luthor finally got his due and now sits in prison instead of behind a desk ... Lex and Clark had a fallout, and you can tell Clark still doesn't trust Lex, and Lex's evil side has grown ever more and more present throughout the seasons ... the mystery of the caves/glyphs has continued to evolve, and keeps you wondering whether or not Jor-El was a caring father or an alien bent on having Earth overtaken (though I'm certain, knowing the comics, that it will prove Jor-El's intentions were good all along) ... there's been TONS of character development, which episodes have you been watching? Yes, they incorporate a villain of the week (but not EVERY week), but show me a superhero show that hasn't ... it's impossible to fill seasons of episodes without doing so. I find myself intrigued at the end of every episode as to what will happen next. I actually did not watch the show from its inception ... I had begun, probably watched about 5 episodes, then had to stop because my local affiliate dropped WB programming. I didn't start watching the episodes until they started airing 5 nights a week on ABC Family last fall ... and I've been hooked every since. I was fortunately able to get some DVDs burned of the first 12 episodes of season 4, and been saving the new episodes on my DVR. But you know, to each their own. You lost interest, while mine has only increased. At least we are both looking forward to Superman Returns, regardless of our feelings on Smallville.

I love it when you people condemn a movie before you know a thing about it. You take whatever opinion you first read and adopt it as your own and stick with it throughout. We don't know if the movie will be good or not, but the signs are looking good. I have faith in Singer. I think Spacey will be a good Luthor. I don't know anything about Routh, so I can't say whether or not he'll be good. He'll never replace Christopher Reeve in my eyes or my heart. Tom Welling wouldn't work as Superman. He's just not that good of an actor. He's passable, but not someone who should carry a movie. At any rate, I'm withholding my final judgement until the movie opens. But I'm remaining positive that it might be good.

If Singer/WB want to, they can approach the "Smallville" continuity as they have the Donner continuity...just not do anything that directly contradicts it. The fans of the show (of which I'm one) can still then take it as a sort of continuation of the show (or a kind of 'how it will end' since the show may still be going when the movie comes out). And it doesn't really matter if Welling is playing the part or not. There were THREE Batmans in the Burton/Schumacher continuity. If this version of Supes/Clark seems like it could reasonably be close to the Clark Kent of "Smallville" (or even the Donner movies, for that matter), then individual fans can interpret it however they want. I imagine the WB will take that route in order not to alienate any particular group of Superman fans. They already seem to be going in that direction with a story that hasn't been told in either of those continuities: Superman gone away. Which, by the way, is something in line with what the Clark of "Smallville" would do (season 2/season 3 when he left for Metropolis under the influence of red Kryptonite b/c of family problems). We assume he already knows Lois and Lex...if they leave how he met/came to know them open, then fans can fill in the blanks however they want. As others have noted, its probably best for Welling's career not to do the movie...considering he's already played the character. You can tell from things he says in the press that, while he's being the good soldier, he's getting closer to being ready for the show to end so he can move on from Clark Kent, and that's his prerogative. I hope this Brandon Routh does a great job, but I agree...it's premature to just assume that he's better for the part than Welling would have been.

I mean if the Superman movie is due next summer and it works, fine, then Warners has a new franchise AND a TV show running, both generating revenue for the studio. Twice as much money coming in off the character. On the other hand, if the movie bombs (ie. Routh sucks and people laugh him off the screen), then Warners can simply turn to the Smallville crew and say "Well, the movies aren't gonna fly. We blew that one. So to pump up the ratings, you guys might as well do the event that alot of people want to see and let Welling get the suit and become Superman on TV. And continue the series on that way. Maybe we'll call it METROPOLIS now. Either way, we might as well milk the show now for all we can."

Regardless of what Harry says, this movie won't make its budget back in U.S. theatres. The rationale will be "why should I go pay money to see Superman when I can watch it free on the tv?" Ala "Elektra" and Jennifer Gardner...well, that and it sucked. You can say what you want about Welling (and I think he's done a great job on a poorly written show), but Rosenbaum deserves to be Lex. He is the best thing about Smallville. I have great faith in Batman Begins, but I am seriously not interested in paying (or movie hopping) to see this film in the theatres. And when I refer to production costs, I'm not counting how much Warners blew in the last decade in pre-production costs on Burton's aborted "Superman Lives" project that thankfully got scrapped.

Well, I guess I stand corrected. Still, the show is still to stagnant for my liking. I don't care what anyone says, I saw Chloe go in that house and blow the hell up. So two episodes into the next season she is walking around laddida like nothing happened. I missed the first two episodes that may have explained it, but I don't care. She blew up; she should've stayed blown up. Lex is evil now? That's good to hear. I always liked his character better when he pulled off some underhanded move that hinted at his evil. Now seeing him move towards full on evil, I may have to see that. I do collect comics by the way; did you not see my comparison of Smallville to the Ultimate titles? Superman comics have never been my thing, but I know enough about it. Yes, you are right, characters never really die in comics and it bugs the shit out of me there too. I only read super-hero books when they are written by a writer I particularly like. For the most part, though, I stick to graphic novels, Vertigo titles, stuff like that. I am excited about the Superman movie though. Bryan Singer will knock it out of the ballpark I'm sure. It doesn't get any better than Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. I had thought (and you going to laugh) that Billy Zane wouldn't have been a bad Lex Luthor. But this film will still make $500mill worldwide easy unless the reviews destroy it. And I do watch Smallville as every so often you have something cool happening, but nothing justifying watching it week in week out so I record episodes if I can be bothered. It is a bad show.

The remake of PLANET OF THE APES made $175 million domestic - doesnt mean its a good film. JURASSIC PARK III made $180 million, doesnt mean its a good film. You can have your "reimaginings" make more than the original classics, but they are quickly sent to forgettable garbage dump and are ridiculed by both fans and critics. If the new SUPERMAN does not have an epic feel to it and slam bang action and John Williams himself scoring and at least follows in Donner's trail, then it will flop. Christian Bale I can imagine as Batman, he has a dark gravitas to him and is a respectable actor having proved he has acting and action chops (EQUILIBRIUM etc). Brandon Routh looks like an Italian waiter. Can you imagine a future SUPERMAN VS BATMAN film with Routh and Bale slugging it out ---Routh aint even in the same league.

Welling looks good, but is one of the worst actors I've ever seen. It's Joey's Soap Acting level. He has three looks - confused, angry, and happy. He's an awful actor. If it's all the fault of the writers and directors, how come John Glover, Michael Rosenbaum, John Schneider and Annette O'Toole manage to do excellent performances every single week? Do they get a different director and writer? Do they get the good one, and then get a shitty writer and director to come in to do Welling's scenes? And the show, sorry, has been terrible for a while now. I really enjoyed it at first, thought it was a great idea. When they ditched the "green meteor rocks" monsters of the week, it improved again. I watched it right up until the end of the 3rd season, because occasionally it would be really good, but mostly it sucked. I kept watching because I wanted to like it, I thought it would get better. But it didn't. It just got worse. Much worse. The only thing that kept me coming back for so long was the superb acting of Rosenbaum and Glover, managing to pull off great scenes despite dodgy writing. If the series was just about them, I'd still be watching. But the shitty stories, pisspoor acting from the others, and having the reset button flicked every single week, let alone every season, eventually made me give up. The "continuity"? Yeah, that would be nice. Every week it's as if a new show is starting, they seem to forget all about everything else that's happened. Clark tells Chloe or Lana that their new boyfriend is evil, and they're like "you're just jealous", forgetting the previous fifty fucking times he's told them that and turned out to be right. And every time, they go oh Clark, you're right, I'll never ignore you like that again. Next week, they'll have forgotten all about it. Plus the fucking around with established continuity is stupid. The whole cave drawing stuff is ridiculous, as is the "evil" Jor El stuff. We know he's not evil. And if he is, then you're completely rewriting the entire origin. If you're going to do that, why bother having any continuity at all? Just make up a new superhero. Oh, he knew Lex when he was in Smallville. Okay. And Lois Lane. And Perry White. And every other fucking character he eventually has dealings with, none of whom will remember the strange teenager with seemingly "super" powers. And the worst thing of all? Clark's whole angsty thing is that he can't tell anyone about his powers, and he feels responsible for getting people hurt. So, at the end of season 2, what does he do? He puts on the red kryptonite ring, goes crazy, and fucks off - which he knows will result in him doing all kinds of mad shit, hurting lots of people, and more than likely getting his powers discovered. Yeah. Sure. That makes sense. "I don't want to hurt you! So I'm putting myself in a position whereby I become incredibly dangerous. Okay?" Bollocks. It's utter bollocks. How this wank keeps getting new seasons while shows like Firefly and Wonderfalls get axed before the 1st season even finishes is beyond me. I'm looking forward to the Superman movie, they seem to be doing everything right as far as I can tell. I don't know anything about Routh, and I don't want to, until I see him on the big screen. I trust Singer. He's hardly going to pick someone to be the cornerstone of his whole fucking movie without some serious testing. Relax folks, it's in safe hands.

...The thing about "Smallville" is that this season started out great, what with the whole "Kal" & Jor-El thing. The guest-appearance of Bart Allen/Flash?/Kid-Flash? was pretty cool too... But then they got into the whole crap about Lana... Her witchy ancestor... her boyfriend & his mom... the tattoo... I mean Jesus! WHY won't they let this storyline die, and move on? Lana is easily the worst character on the show, if not the worst character on television, so why do we keep getting bludgeoned with her sorry ass like she'll even be ultimately important to Superman's history in the long run? This show is supposed to be about Clark Kent, not the girl he never had! It's gotten so ridiculous... Their Lois (Erica Durance)is awesome, too bad they pulled Kate "Blue Crush" Bosworth out of their ass for the movie... And the "superdog" was utter crap. Can we get Braniac or something, please? As a travelling hypnotist/stage magician who's actually an evil alien, even? Please? :)

First of all this is untrue, he's not. Yes, Rosenbaum blows him off screen but Rosenbaum would blow most off screen because he is a truly gited actor. Bottom line TO PLAY A MYTHOLOGICAL CHARACTER YOU NEED TO BE A GOOD LEADING MAN BEFORE A GOOD ACTOR. This is seen in William Shatner, listen to the Wrath of Khan commentary and he'll tell you that the Shat was a great leading man. Used properly he is better than Olivier in certain roles. This is also why Arnie is a worse actor than De Niro but only one would play the Terminator. Ed Norton is much better than Hugh Grant but Grant is better than anyone in roles like 4 weddings. Welling is a great leading man and a good actor. This is why he successfully carries Smallville. All of that said, I think Singer is playing all this perfectly and we'll get a great movie

He bowed out and Bryan had Hugh as a back-up. After seeing Dougray in 'Ever After; with Drew I thought he'd make an ideal Logan/Wolverine if only he'd hit the gym and grow those muttonchops, but he bowed out due to his injured collar bone and Hugh Jackman stepped in. The casting of Russell Crowe would've been a shitty one at best, although Kurt Russell would've been equally as awesome as Hugh Jackman was.

...when I questioned the WB's casting decision, I wasn't implying that they NEED the Smallville audience. I was simply saying they could have locked in 3 to 4 million more people for opening day of their movie. Now there's a chance a good number of those people won't even check the movie out because it's not "their" Superman. It was a situation where WB could've hedged a bet and didn't. That's all. Maybe they're just that confident in the decision. That's fine, but it isn't the one I would've made (and, again, I don't particularly care for Smallville).

Is probably aware that it doesn't matter who dons the Betsy Ross lingerie and media whore glasses, this project is a bad idea. Is the world, geek or otherwise, CRAVING a Superman movie? The only way you could possibly make this interesting is to have Supes fight Jesus. For the record, Jesus in 6 rounds. Will this make money? Hopefully, cuz I'd like to see more Nolan helmed Batman projects... The Long Halloween... Now that's flick worthy of excitement. Oh yeah, I never saw the problem with Beyonce as Lois Lane and Vin Diesel would've made a fun Lex.

I might have been interested if they cast Jim Caviezel but Warner and Singer totally screwed that one up. To those of you saying that Welling is "a natural" for the role of Superman and should have gotten it...give it up. Welling's gone on record at least twice with his total disinterest in ever playing the adult Superman. He's even threatened to quit SMALLVILLE if he ever has to wear the suit, and he said in an interview that having him flying in on of the episodes was a mistake because he thinks Clark Kent is more believable when he's "grounded." He couldn't care less about being the full-blown Superman. If he doesn't want it, then why campaign for him? Accept that he didn't want it and move on.

Thereve been too many times I thought a movie would be good or bad and then I turned out to be wrong, so I wont say Routh will be a bad superman, but I will say I do question some of the casting, namely Bosworth as Lois and Spacey as Luthor.. sorry, I just cant see it. I like Welling, I hope someday he will decide to tackle the roll of the full blown Supes but I can see him not wanting to be typecast... esp if the show crashes first, which it may (I mean, seriously, Lana Lang posessed by the spirit of a witch and battling clark Crouching Tiger style in Asia? Man, the writers are even trying anymore...). Like many things I feel that theres always time to change and surely the potential to do so... I guess im not sure any more...
