That Iceman kid wouldn't be bad.

I think he's pretty good, at least in the X-flicks, and he's got his foot in the Superman door by playing a nemesis of sorts to young clark on Smallville. But oh well, like other decisions on this flick, I'm trusting in Singer, since he seems to know what he's doing. Oh yeah, and, uh, first?

All I can think is that he must've tested very well, because just to look at him there isn't much about him that feels Jimmy-ish to me. Can anyone who's seen him in any of the movies he's done vouch for his "Golly-gee-Mr. Kent" ability?

How in the world did the actress who played the wife get a nomination?!? Was 2004 *that* weak a year for supporting actress performances? Sheesh. Anyhow, I can't comment on the Jimmy Olsen casting because I've never seen the actor. Hotel Rwanda was a great movie, though; not at all, as I had feared, depressing. It was an uplifting movie.

Just checking out that link in the talkback, heh, it would have been great to see any of geeks from Freaks & Geeks as Jimmy, hey, Spider-Man got one of the freaks for its flick. Anyways, don't know who this kid is, and I don't really think Jimmy Olsen is that big of a role to care about either way, could of been Cheadle for all I care, so in summation, eh.
Actually, I thought Shawn Ashmore was perfect for the Jimmy role

Did they really cast 'X-Men' all that young?
by Ribbons

Granted, Rogue and Bobby were both made teenagers or close enough to them, but Wolverine's age remains unspecified (in real life, Jackman's 36), Halle Berry is 38 (34 at the time of the first movie), Famke Janssen 39 (likewise 35), James Marsden 31 (27), and Alan Cumming 39 (36). I don't know how old the fella who plays Colossus is, but that seems like a fairly seasoned cast to me. It was obviously a conscious decision to youth-inize Rogue and Iceman, which people may or may not take issue with, but with a franchise in mind, I think the ages of everyone else were right where they needed to be. This cast, on the other hand, does seem a little young, although Huntington is spot on.

I have been very worried about this film but after the teaser trailer and these trading card titles...dear god....the titles pretty much give away the entire film .....so spoilers are pretty big but you know....we all have a pretty good idea of where this film has to go....If you are at all interested in episode 3 go to dark horizons now cos it just got me very very excited

Bryan Singer is WAY OVERRATED!!! Xmen was "meh", X2 was a litter better than "meh." The only good casting was STewart and Jackman and maybe cumming. Everybody else was below average, yes I do think Ian Mckellan's Magneto was not that great. This superman movie so far is casted way too young. It's gonna blow. just like FF will and DD,Hulk and elektra did.

X-Men was cast to put asses in seats

Singer clearly didn't have all the power in casting X-Men. No sane person would have cast Halle Berry, but she probably did sell tickets. And James Marsden was just the "pretty boy" pick for Cyclops. These movies are cast to make money, not to be good.
Singer overrated?
by Rupee88
Jan 31st, 2005
08:19:29 PM
Maybe he is a bit overrated. X-Men 2 is the best superhero movie (not counting The Incredibles), but the competition is so piss-poor that I agree that Singer may get extra points that he doesn't deserve. But he DOES seem to do solid work and doesn't f*ck up everything as bad as other directors do. When Daredevil, Elektra, Punisher, Catwoman, etc is your competition, it's not tough to shine a little brighter than perhaps you should.
The only castmembers I like in this is Kevin Spacey as Lex Lutho

The rest I find non-"Superman"-material. Hugh Laurie as Perry White? Um...no a better choice I think would've been John Goodman. Perry in my opinion is gruff, large, and in charge. John Goodman would've fit this role nicely. This Superman newcomer seems like a ploy just to bank on the Toby Maguire success of "SPIDER-MAN." And this Huntington doesn't fit as Jimmy Olson. A few castmates came to mind as my picks: Topher Grace, Shawn Ashmore, Jake Gyllenhal, Jimmy Fallon, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Ryan Phillipe, or some of those younger actors who don't get recognized so much in film anymore. Second, if they do go with Metallo, or Braniac. Then, I'd have Malcolm McDowell as Metallo. He played him in the cartoon with a enough wit and bite, I think he'd pull him off in real life just as fine, and you could have him and Lex face off against Superman. I'd love to see that!

In looking up Huntington's photo over on IMDB he seems like he'll be fine. Jimmy's simply a second banana, geeky, comedic relief part and Huntington seems like he could be all right. I love Screenplaywriter's suggestion above about John Goodman being Perry White. He would have been great for the role now that I think of it, not to mention he would have definitely added a more "mature" balance to this young cast especially since you envision that Perry White is a seasoned, older newspaper man. But in the end, all of them aside, it still comes down to the new guy and if he fits the suit and can LOOK like Superman -- and I mean with MUSCLES and some BULK -- and exude the charisma that Reeve did onscreen. I'm sure the rest of the cast can do their jobs adequately as professional actors, but if we don't buy into Routh, we're gonna be squirming in our seats wanting our money back ASAP. So since Singer delivered on the X flicks, particularly with calling it right with Jackman, here's hoping he delivers again. Of course, the bad side of that is that Singer did get LUCKY with Jackman since fate actually stepped in and took over there. After all, Singer DID actually want Dougray Scott (who chose to do MI:2 instead) who would have sucked ass as Wolverine...

was filmed in my high school in Toronto... as part of some deal they brokered they used us students as extras as well as the union members. We were paid well and got really, really high with Eddy Furlong. Very surreal to watch ourselves in the background of the highschool scenes (i was wearing a blue turtle neck by a locker) and even we hated that piece of garbage.

He even had the good sense to be attracted to Mariel Hemingway over Margot Kidder! Stop trying to paint this as the revelation that Batman Begins might be after Batman and Robin. All four original Superman movies are worth remembering (even the mostly dumb Quest For Peace) when you consider that for almost ten years now we've been hearing nightmarish rumors about Superman Lives with a whig sporting Nicholas Cage, McG, Krypton not blowing up, and Luthiac's gay robot dog sidekick.

Hell, instead of casting the guy who mocks Chris Klein in Not Another Teen Movie, I would've cast Chris Klein as Superman! Hell, if they wanted a young comedic minority to play Jimmy Olsen, I would've cast Wilmer Valderamo from that 70's show over this guy. Or how about the Asian guy from the American Pie movies (M.I.L.F. guy), he'd be terrific too. So far the movie is looking pretty Lame!

by Karl Hungus
Feb 1st, 2005
12:23:38 PM
On the whole, there is very little difference in the ages of the actors cast for Richard Donner's original "Superman" and Bryan Singer's new "Superman Returns," so I'm not too worried. Here goes: SUPERMAN/CLARK KENT - Christopher Reeve, 26...Brandon Routh, 26. LOIS LANE - Margot Kidder, 30...Kate Bosworth, 22. LEX LUTHOR - Gene Hackman, 48...Kevin Spacey, 46. JIMMY OLSEN - Marc McClure, 21...Sam Huntington, 23. So, as you can see, not THAT big of a difference, aside from Bosworth as Lois...and I've got no problem with a younger, hotter Lois!
I'm hapoy about John Williams returning but the cast...cmon man.

Superman, Bah. This will suck no matter what because Superman has always sucked. Who gives a shit if in the 30's we needed to feel validated by imposing all of our childhood fantasies on an alien who is invincible? This is 2005 and Superman is just over. People love Spider Man because he's tortured. They love the X-Men because they are hated. Even Batman is just a guy with training and gadgets with a fractured psyche. Singer NEEDS to make not just Jimmy, but Sperman himself gay just to make this shit interesting again. Even then I'm sure it would lose it's edge after a while and just be lame again.

That might make this an OK flick. Instead of Superman having the interest in Lois, make it he is after Jimmy instead, maenwhile Lois is pining after Jimmy but she can never have him because he's all doe-eyed over Superman. Nice twist, and maybe it will make a boring, uninteresting story like Superman worth watching. Superman is a bit like watching the mould grow on cheese. Regards, Eduin
