It was funny - very funny. And the argument that you had to sit through the lame bits to get to the genius can be made about Simpsons (more so now) and South Park (obsessed with using homosexuality as a punch line). And I love how on the Simpons DVD commentaries the writers/producers feel the need to continuously accuse Family Guys of stealing their bits. P.S. I'd rather have one more season of Futurama then 3 more of Family Guy. Sigh.

I agree xannibal, while I happen to really like Family Guy, I'd much prefer a little more Futurama, man was that show good, especially when it mixed powerful emotional power with its humour (see the end of the episode about Fry's dog, and the montage showing Leela's parents caring for her throughout her childhood remotely)
What about American Dad?

Any word on Seth's other new show American Dad?

Oh and Thoreau, "powerful emotional power" is rough stuff, Futurama got damn depressing in the later seasons, like Fry's dog montage and the episode in which Fry almost died due to the poisonous sting. They didn't mix the humor in well enough.

What's really interesting is that it's going to be a Sweeps Month show. Count me in as one who wishes Futurama would come back too, but I'll be watching this one. Diamonds...she'll pretty much have to. (P.S. Luck of the Fryish (Fry's brother) is better than any episode of the Simpsons ... and the one with God (or perhaps God who merged with a robot) is up there as well. What a great show)

I mean seriously, the best bits if not outright stoeln from the Simpsons are at least directly influenced by it. Only twice did I ever see originality in Family Guy and that was Optimus Prime being Jewish, and the diamond ring commercial parody. Everything else was totally borrowed. Fmaily guy, aint it cool news? No not really.

What a great show...much better than the latter simpson seasons. Of course nothing can be much better than 4-7th season simpsons. But come on...come onnnnn! South park is still pretty good too...although it seems to me that every episode now is hooked on the latest news scoop...which can be a little tedious every once and a while, good thing its so damn funny. How about some aqua teen or sealab too? Venture bros i think is more hit or miss than Family guy, although that too is a great show. "They hit me with a truck!" HAH!

IMO, it's just a bunch of rapid-fire gags lazily strung together. And a bunch of rapid-fire gags lazily strung together does not a great cartoon make. Does it deserve to exist? Sure, if there's an audience for it. Does it deserve the praise it seems to be getting? Not in my opinion.

FCC fears cause Fox to pixelate character's butt in Family Guy
by truthseekr1488

'LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Fox says it covered up the naked rear end of a cartoon character recently because of nervousness over what the Federal Communications Commission will find objectionable. The latest example of TV network self-censorship because of FCC concerns came a few weeks ago during a rerun of a "Family Guy" cartoon. Fox electronically blurred a character's posterior, even though the image was seen five years ago when the episode originally aired. "We have to be checking and second-guessing ourselves now," Fox entertainment president Gail Berman said Monday. "We have to protect our affiliates." Fox hadn't gotten any complaints about the cartoon. But the move follows the FCC's decision in October to fine 169 Fox stations $7,000 each for airing an episode of "Married By America" that showed people licking whipped cream from strippers' bodies and a man in his underwear being spanked by strippers.'

How interesting to see the ahtred between fans and non fans. I consider myself a big fan of most of the "adult" cartoon series. Love Adult Swim, it's great fun. Was a big fan of the Simpsons, and my favorite show on television is South Park. I even enjoyed Kevin Smith's clerks animated series, thought it WAS uneven. And, for awhile, I had taped every episode of The Critic heralding it as the greatest cartoon ever made. However, I feel that Family Guy IS indeed freakin' sweet. I'm sorry Simpsons' fans. The show is done. It ran its course years ago. I can't remember the last fully interesting show. The things, in my opinion, that make South Park and Family Guy great are the speed at which they operate. I had a debate when I tried to get my Critic cohorts to watch Family Gu saying that it was better than Lovitz' Opus. They tried to fight it, and they oculdn't. Especially season 3. The jokes come a mile a minute. There are constant visual gags, and for a Pop Culture nut, it's heaven. I understand people who dont' like it though. I'm a child that bridged the gap of the 80's and 90's. For me, watching Family Guy is like reading an old highschool year book, inside jokes and all. And seeing as how the show was brought back, I'm not the only one who feels that way. That said, knock off the negativity. If you don't like Family Guy and you sit and watch the Simpsons every Sunday night. Congrats. You found a way to enjoy that show. Enough with bashing someone for not enjoying the same things as you. Unless it's Desperate Housewives. If you have a friend who watches Desperate Housewives...kill them before it's too late.

I can understand talkbacks for things like "Lost","Carnivale","24","Alias ", stuff like that to discuss the plot elements and predict where they'll go from here, but what would be the purpose of a "Family Guy" talkback? "Such and such was funny, LOL". I mean shit, that'd be like the horror of sitting in a college bar listening to the constant shrieks of "I'm Rick James bitch!" all over again. Oh God that was terrible, and it still hasn't quite passed.

I can't believe the AICN talkback community is so full of predictable, creamy douchebaggy-ness that they even manage to hate on Family Guy. Well I'm here to affirm your beliefs...yes, proclaiming to hate something that everyone else likes makes you smart, tastefull, and more attractive to women. And with that, I shall rise above all you psuedo-haters, with my ultimate hater list. The following shows are lame, predictable and tasteless, and you suck for liking them: House, Lost, Alias, 24, the new Battlestar Galactica, the Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, Six Feet Under, the Sopranos, Carnivale, the Wire. I am above all these shows and think they suck, ergo I am a superior human being. If only all those rich, successful people who write, direct, star in, and voice these shows had a sliver of my talent, the world would be a better place. And me? I work at the local cinema, ripping ticket stubs, and by day I drive a bus. But for some reason, I am still superior in every way to all these people, and you. I am the AICN talkbacker. Stay tuned for tomorrows episode, where I will proclaim in a forum that I dislike a popular show or movie.

Or doesn't know comedy. Family Guy is one of the funniest shows on television. Sure, when it first come out, I was skeptical. It was one of many animated television shows to come out and it looked about as good as the rest of the duds. However, I was sold with the first episode, especially after the bit where everyone is going "Oh, no" "Oh no!" and the Kool-Aid man busts through the wall and says, "Oh yeah!" Then he sheepishly steps back out of the wall when he realizes that everyone is staring at him. I think people that don't like this show are either pretentious snobs or they haven't seen it. And what was with the GTA crack by the way? So the only audience that GTA should get is an ll year old stoner? Are you saying that I, a 23 year old, am a stoner with a Peter Pan complex because I play GTA (probably one of the most technologically impressive video games of all time that allows the player to truly explore a virtual world the way video games are meant to)? Like I said with Family Guy, people who have a problem with GTA that make such base generalizations obviously haven't played that either.

Okay, I chuckled at a few gags in the first episode, but then what little I saw after that just filled me with astonishment. Shatner jokes? Do people still laugh at Shatner jokes? South Park is offensive as hell, but it's also *funny*, whereas Family Guy is merely repulsive. The Simpsons (in it's 92-98 prime) had it's share of pop-culture randomness and slapstick, but underneath it all was a great deal of genuine heart (I still tear up at the ending of that episode with all of the pictures of Maggie in Homer's workstation, and the plaque reading "do it for her"). The same was true for Futurama, which, while never as consistently hilarious as the Simpsons at it's best, nevertheless also had a lot of emotion. Family Guy simply panders to the lowest common denominator, and will get cancelled again after a few more low-rated months on the air.
So the summary of this talkback is...

That's too fucking awesome. Peter Griffin and I love to see you haters tortured for the rest of your lives. Why? This show will go down in animation history, as will The Simpsons, The Flintstones, etc. etc. Whether you like it or not doesn't matter. People will talk about it, people will quote it, but one thing you can't do is avoid it. It will eat your brains and cause you to whine and moan like you do everyday. God I love this show. It has performed it's purpose of pissing off the people that I despise, and that is those who think they know what's funny. Step outside your world, and embrace the new season as a gift, rather than a burden on your delapidated soul.

Family Guy has proven itself episode after episode to be conisitently funny, an un-pc equal opportunity offender, and pays tribute to many of the great things I've loved over my very short 30+years of life. Is it the be all end all of television for ever...No way. But its danged good entertainment and one of the very few shows that make me laugh out loud. Many comedies that I adore dont even make me laugh out loud so thats real good by me. In a time when television comedies are so very not funny or incredibly un-interesting, its a nice breath of fresh air to see a show like this get some recognition.

You pathetic losers have finally crossed the line, you have accused the best show on TV of sucking. Wake up lamers, Simpsons has been sucking for about 7 years now. It had its hayday, and then Futurama and Family Guy came along. Now, dont be sad that you dont get the jokes. The guy who created it watched a lot of TV and read a lot of history. My boyfriend is a 50 year old Jewish intellectual snob who reads the New York Times every day, the New Yorker once a week and listens to NPR religiously. He is an esteemed attorney who has argued cases before three different Federal Appellate Courts. The work he has done as an attorney has been featured in two documentaries, over a dozen newscasts and featured in print countless times. He calls any printed material featuring super heroes "funny books". The only cartoon he would ever watch is Family Guy and he thinks it is side-splittingly funny. Could he be a 12 year old stoner in the body of a surly old Jew? Not this dude.

You are currently out of touch with what's funny in this world if you don't at least snicker when watching this show. I have never met a single person who dislikes 'Family Guy'. And nearly everyone I know owns at least one of the boxsets. Hey, the numbers don't lie. It was the topselling tv show on DVD, ahead of the Simpsons and South Park, for a reason the past 2 years running. It's humor hits a chord with its viewers that other contemporary comedies just can't touch. Sure, it's basic and sometimes crude, but, man, funny is funny. AS to your comment of sifting through long, lazy weak gags... Moriarity, I don't think you've watched enough Family Guy and too much South Park. I love South Park. I think everyone should get their fill of South Park. But come on, talk about sifting. Many South Park episodes rely on shock value (oh my god, I can't believe they can get away with that on television!) for many of its laughs. I go 3 or 4 entire South Park episodes to find one that makes me belly shaking laugh. I can't go through 5 minutes of a single episode of Family Guy to get that. Hey, it might not be socially relevant, but then again, neither was Police Squad or Faulty Towers, among others. Sometimes you just have to loosen your belt and just go with it.

by HomerGator

First, I would love to see a show of hands of everyone who likes the Spaced series but doesn't like Family Guy. The first time I watched Spaced I loved it for one reason. It was like a live action Family Guy for me. Pop culture references left and right. Sure, Spaced has some meager sentimentality thrown in, but most of the time a character is chastized or made the butt of an easy pop culture joke when they delve into possible "depth". That's fine with me. I enjoy character driven drama, and deep emotional works, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy cleverly written jokes coming at a mile a minute. If you herald the greatness of SPACED, you'd better take an honest look at Family Guy and realize, they are kin. Sorry, but it's true. Second, on the subject of Family Guy ripping The Simpsons off, that's the worst argument I've heard so far. What is it that's ripped off? The oafish husband with the smart wife? Please see The Honeymooners, then watch it's "rip off" The Flintstones. Neither of the kids is remotely like Bart, Lisa, or Maggie. The show just never feels like The SImpsons to me. Not to mention, The Simpsons has been on TV for a gazillion years. Ya think that through that times it's covered a couple of plots? For more information, please refer to the South Park episode entitled "The Simpsons Already Did It". Matt and Trey used to spitball shows and constantly run into the problem of "The SImpsons already did it". So, one episode, they combined a bunch of Simpsons plots into one show. Considering each Simpsons epsiode has a beginning plot, and then diverges completely, that's two plots for each episode, 341 epsiodes so far, for a grand total of 682 plots. Hell, with those numbers, even The SImpsons is ripping off the Simpsons.

One time at a party this guy was all, oh have you ever seen 'Family Guy' on Adult Swim? It's pretty funny, you might enjoy it. I'm like Oooookay. People can be so silly. As if Family Guy never premiered on Fox after Superbowl XXXIII. Anyway, the show has it's faults, but it does what early episodes of The Simpsons does, makes me laugh no matter how many times I watch. The best was when Peter ran against Lois and he had a flashback spoofing the six million dollar man. "We can rebuild him, but I don't want to spend money." funny shit. I don't like how they made the baby gay though. That was left field and odd.

I recently borrowed from a friend all of the complete Family Guy season sets. It took me forever to get through seasons 1 & 2. I found those episodes to be a pale imitation of The Simpsons and other "adult" cartoons. There were a few times where I wanted to bail on the Family Guy marathons and hand the discs back to my friend. However, I'm glad I didn't... seasons 3 and 4 of the show are actually pretty damned funny and very often clever. The writers, producers and voice actors seemed to gel and hit their stride. I'm not holding my breath for the new episodes or anything... it could be impossible to recreate that chemistry from those last two seasons... but I'll check them out. and I'll tell you why. Because this is the first time in history that geeks made a difference, that we stood up and were counted. How often have one of you started or signed a web petition for one thing or another? Make this movie. Drop this actor from the sequel. Release this on DVD. And how many times do these petitions work? How many times have we accomplished anything? Well, with Family Guy, we did. We buy the DVDs, we watch it nightly on Adult Swim. And that meant something to FOX. Now they're actually saying - Hey, maybe we DID screw up with this show. Maybe it WAS wrong of us to move it around in the schedule so that no fans could ever find it. Maybe we DID have something marketable here. A studio admit defeat? Never! But they did, and they're FIXING that mistake. They're giving it another chance. New episodes of a previously cancelled show - that's HUGE, whether you liked the show or not. The world is changing, the geeks are being counted. If you don't like Family Guy - well, fine, thats your opinion. I disagree, but go ahead and choose to watch what you want to. But DAMN! This is cool news. Imagine, after all, if we started actually GETTING the things we asked for?

Okay, maybe in the Conan O'Brien years, The Simpsons would have given FG a run for its money. But generally, FG is wittier, sharper, edgier and I usually laugh out loud at least every couple of gags. Whereas I've found that I can watch whole episodes of Futurama or Simpsons and just barely find the energy to guffaw. Quite simply, McFarlane is a genius. And I still wake up laughing about the running Margot Kidder gag.
Reasoning behind Family Guy
by SamBlackChvrch21
Jan 18th, 2005
05:08:13 PM
The hunmor behind Family Guy is not necessarily for everyone. Some of it is regional and topical humor that is very obscure. Does anyone recall the contreversey of Big League Chew gum and how several packages of that gum had shipped with Cocaine in it because one packaging employee botched his cocaine smuggling plan. Does anyone recall this awkward, yet Hillarious quote from when Brian was High on coke?: Lois Griffin: So how was your day? Brian Griffin: My day? Un-freakin' believable. First we nailed this bastard who had the gall to hide his stuff in his daughter's doll, her doll for god's sake. Where's the line anymore? Well, I got news for ya, it's not even on the radar screen! The days of decency and virtue are gone, honey, BAM, freakin' evaporated like a dingy stinkin' mudpuddle. One day you see your reflection in it and the next day it's a, it's a damn oil spot on your crack driveway, staring back at you, mocking at you, blah, blah, blah, knowing the perverted truths that rot in the pit of your soul. That's how my freakin' day was! [pause] Peter Griffin: You know what I haven't had in a while? Big League Chew.

They did a whole episode on a knock off of the Fantastic 4. "Team Impossiable." Oh man that was great. Also the best character on that show is the dude that looks like Dr. Strange. Pure comedy. GO TEAM VENTURE! Jar Jar Is Vader

I wasn't one of those Simpson haters. But toward the end of last season and since this season began, I too am wondering if it's time for this show to wrap it up. The writing, humor, and overall vibe itself of The Simpsons feels dated.

Family Guy. The creators of the Simpsons only complain about Family Guy because its putting them to shame. What Family Guy lacks in originality it more than makes up with funny. I will admit that it borrows from the Simpsons in premise and type of humor, but it's timing is accelerated, and the tone is entirly different.

Just like episodes about Homer or Bart are GENERALLY better. Not that you can compare 15 years of quality to 3 years of hit-or-miss.

...pull the plug on the Simpsons. I've caught a couple of new episodes recently and they seem much funnier (making me actuually chuckle aloud at times) than they have been for QUITE some time. Maybe because I was away so long? No... I still caught most of those humorless seasons in syndication and I can confidently say the time is now, when they seem to be hitting more than they are missing, to end the show on a relatively high note. They can make movies and maybe a few Treehouse of Horror specials at Halloween. Hell, I'd even support an Itchy & Scratchy spin-off series. But the Simpsons are tired. They've become the establishment and very little is as unfunny as the establishment. Family Guy may have been inspired by the Simpsons (back when the Simpsons was the best thing on TV), but even those Adult Swim reruns now have the advantage over new Simpsons of being fresh, edgy and consistently funny. South Park still has some stand-out episodes, but it's already starting to grow visibly tired. The Venture Brothers is indeed hilarious, but I'm afraid it's rather limited appeal to comic book and cartoon fans will prevent it from ever being the break-out success that its creators would like. I hope that doesn't mean it gets cancelled, because I would take the Venture Brothers over just about anything (save Aqua Teen Hunger Force) where cartoon comedy is concerned.
