There's something very unexciting about this lineup. If you had the string quartet playing the score for 'Pandora's Box' that I saw a couple years ago you'd be set with that. but I always thought BNAT was something to really write home about.

Can't you read??? "This is a TONAL guide that's 30% off of what is ACTUALLY playing at BNAT this year." Which means the films on the list are nothing but HINTS that could lead you to figuring out what is REALLY playing. The only thing I'm sure of is that Harry will screen George Pal's WAR OF THE WORLDS. This is Professor Obvious signing off. Goodnight. And have fun you wacky Texans!

There's usually at least one film from the Toronto Film Festival's Midnight Madness programme. Other possibilities: Calvaire, Creep, Dead Birds, Kontroll, and Rahtree: Flower of the Night. Kung Fu Hustle is also a good bet. As for either She Xing Diao Shou or The Crimson Pirate, I think Ong Bak: Muay Thai Warrior (from the 2003 Midnight Madness) is a pretty good guess. One of The Abominable Dr. Phibes or Dv

I guess that's what I get for posting late at night when I'm half asleep. Harry slipped one by, although the movies he listed as hints would have made for a good BNAT by themselves anyway. I promise I'll read more carefully next time.

If you're feeling happy and carefree and full of Christmas spirit then Get Carter will bring you down to Earth with a bump. It is the single most astonishingly brutal, bleak and depressing film ever made. If you think you know Michael Caine as a cheeky cockney geezer then you haven't seen this, he is the most genuinely frightening character ever committed to celluloid. Not to be confused with the predictably crappy Stallone remake.

Phantom of the Opera, Kung Fu Hustle, The Aviator, Electra, The Life Aquatic, Lemony Snicket's of course as already mentioned in robogeek's blog... Maybe Electra isn't playing? He did say 5 premier-esque movies, and 6 vintage flicks. I count 6 premier movies. Anyone want to update us on the movies that are actually playing? Robogeek's blog hasn't been updated in a loonng time

I will admit I have never been to a BNAT, but have always wanted to go. Seeing as what has already played that we know of....I am VERY glad it wasn't this year. Anyone remember when BNAT was about watching off the wall weirdness? Now it seems to be about "What studio Harry got to shill out some upcoming flick." Passion of the Christ last year was kinda of a nifty thought....but the two kids from Lemony Snicket? I actually feel bad for them. Harry seems to have one concern anymore...himself. Sure, I am all for self-preservation, but he seems to be falling prey to the age-old "forgetting his roots"

Robogeek listed the last of the flicks on his blog. Good GOD this is possibly the LAMEST lineup of movies I have EVER seen! What a bunch of shit!!! And to think I almost considered trying to get tickets, even though I would have had to fly to TX from Chicago to attend. I am SO glad I didn't. If I were there, I think I'd be rioting right now. THESE were our BNAT picks? THESE were the lame-ass "Premiere-type" movies?!? What a sorry excuse for a lineup!!!
Can anyone ever say anything positive on this site?

Is that why the message board structure is so lousy? To just discourage any discourse at all because it is all invariably negative and vicious?

I got back a while ago and I can tell you while it was cool to attend, I am HIGHLY disappointed with BNAT this year. It started out great with the Magic Machine movie (which drug on way too long) and then Lemony Snicket w/ the kids from the movie. At that point, I thought we were in for a great lineup of older movies and new premiers. Everyone was buzzing. Then the festival went straight downhill after The Black Swan. It was mello drama for the next 8 hours. Blonde Venus was good, but was melodrama. Then came Miss Sadie Thompson in 3D. It looked great, but again, more melodrama. Now where the whole night went wrong and never recovered. We all had to leave and take EVERYTHING out and re-enter and go through getting wand searched. We all thought that it was going to be something HUGE or an early cut of something. After 45 min of going through this, we all finally get back in and are then informed by Harry that the movie will be, and I quote, "Joel Schumacher's The Phantom of the Opera". A large number of people started booing. Anyways, the movie started and by 30 minutes in, most everyone was laughing about how ridiculous and terrible it was. People were heckling, yelling out "Skeletor" and basically hating every passing minute of the 2 1/2 hour movie. After that, people were basically in a terrible mood. There were 2 more old move shown and then when we got to finally see some "Premire" movies. "Premire" meant getting to see Layer Cake, a movie that is very good, but is going to be a Sundance movie. Not exactly exclusive BNAT material. The next "Premire" movie was Ong-Bak, a movie which has been floating around the net for months and was released in 2003. Then we finally thought we would see the HUGE climax movie that would save the festival and it turns out to be Kung Fu Hustle. Talk about your all time major fucking let downs. Besides Ong-Bak, which every went crazy for and cheered the whole time, BNAT was really bad this year. I mean, anyone everywhere can go see Lemony Snicket in 5 days and anyone can go see Phantom in a week. It was just a major, major let down this year. I mean it is $60 bucks to get in and is supposed to have one of the best line ups. Even the "exclusive" things that we got to see, such as Spielberg and Cruise wishing Harry a happy birthday were lame because you got to see the War of the Worlds trailer on Friday when it was released everywhere. The only real "exclusive" things we saw was the slide show for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and a few minutes of Madagascar and a preproduction short from Narnia. I talked to many people that spent up to a grand to fly in from all around the country that were very pissed off.

I'm as big a fan of X2 as the next guy, but you people go a bit overboard with it. Now, looking at the above lineup...how in any way does that film belong? Couldn't you have dug up something a little more unique. Going with the Michael Cane thing, how about the original 'Italian Job'. Or if you're looking for some old school horror films, how about the original 'The Haunting' or 'Freaks'. I mean, come on...X2? You need a pseudo superhero flick? How about some old 'Green Hornet' episodes, or 'Flash Gordon'? I mean, come on...you can be more original than X2!

I have to disagree that this year wasn't any fun. But then, to me BNAT isn't about seeing exclusive films that no one else will over see. it is about enjoying great films, old and new, with a lot of wonderful people. I appreciate the effort that Harry puts into the line-up. Sure, I would've waited a week to see Lemony Snicket, but I think Harry is the type of geek who doesn't want to wait if he doesn't have to. I respect that and I enjoyed the film. We saw a lot of great classics that I never would have seen otherwise and that's what I expect from BNAT. I've been to 4 of these and this is one of the best line-ups by far.

Whatever, Marek. Invoking the Nameless Masses doesn't really HELP your case, it hurts it. Especially when the 10 people I came with and everyone I talked to had a great time. One of my friends spent over an hour in the lobby during PHANTOM OF THE OPERA because he couldn't stand it, but he still had fun. I didn't talk to anyone that were "very pissed off", including the couple from the UK that Hippolyta and I had breakfast with on Monday. But you know what? If you hate it, stay away. We won't miss you.
