It was a well done review, highlighting the layout of the movie. The extra garbage I could have done without. Between the snide remarks about "lower-class culture" , the movie being unsuitable "for people who enjoy Beavis and Butthead", and his claim that "The higher your education, the more you will get out of this film" left me...annoyed....and violent. ;)

When your comedy legacy is "Time Travelling Scott Joplin", you know you're riding the Chris Kattan train to nowheresville. Even Chris Farley's decomposed corpse is funnier. Amy Poehler - who is not funny - is funnier. Horatio Sans - who is not funny - is funnier. Cripples are funnier. Dog piles are funnier. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I hope Mya Rudolph gets crabs. And that she's not funny, and that not even Mike Judge can make her funny.

I don't know how I missed it, but I finally got around to watching Office Space on cable about three months ago. That movie is just classic. From the meeting with the "Bobs", to the Michael Bolton is the one that sucks scene ... just classic. I became an instant fan of Lost when Terry O'Quinn had the flashback scene with his boss asking him where the TPS reports were.

Before I say anything I just want to make it clear that I like Judge, and I am not critcizing him. Office Space is one of the funniest movies ever made, and King of the Hill is a great show. But, the set up of this movie is lifted, wholesale, from CM Kornbluth's story The Marching Morons. (Synopsis: In this classic story, written in 1951, a ruthless 20th century real-estate hustler named Honest John Barlow is put into hibernation and wakes in the far future. Over-breeding by low-IQ types has dragged America down to a point at which the small cadre of intellectually capable technicians and administrators can hardly keep things going. They are being overwhelmed by the marching morons. The world can only be saved by Barlow's good old 20th century greed.) Honest John's Solution is to set up an advertising campaign to convince all the stupid people that they want to go to Venus. Borrowing an idea from Hitler, once the first few batches of morons go to their deaths on Venus, the government sends back phony postcards to their relatives saying how great Venus is and how they should come to. It seems that Judge has veered a bit from the original story, but the set up is pretty much the same. I am surpised that nobody has mentioned this in any of the write-ups of the movie I have seen. So before people go off about what Judge is "clearly" saying, at least realize that this isn't even his premise. As for those that want to find political meaning in all this, Culture, American and otherwise, is being dumbed down. Its not the result of a single President or even a party. The political classes, left, right and center, all benefit from an uneducated and unengaged electorate. Stop all the left and right finger pointing and educate yourselves. Both sides of the politcal spectrum have sold out to corporations and special interests, just different ones. Stop all the left right nonsense, and look beyond mindless allegiance to either party. Your being screwed, and it doesn't matter who is in power, both parties sell out to the rich and the corporations.

I think it has become a classic now, not only because its funny, but also because the Y2K bug has passed, and we can all now understand it, and how Meaningless all of their jobs were!!.....XENITEN, King of the Hill and Office Space are both LIGHT YEARS ahead of Beavis and Butthead. Beavis and Butthead were mediocre at best. Just thinking back now to all the 'funny' things I laughed at on the show when I was younger, I see how childish and stupid all of the humor was.. Beavis said "I am Cornholio!" and we giggled, or rolled around laughing. It's the same kind of reaction that saying 'poop' and 'penis' got out of us. It's immature. That is what 7 and 8 year-olds laughed at. My brother, friends and I would be laughing our heads off saying, "Well you're a poopy head! HAHAHAHAHAHA," retorting with "You're a poopy-FACE, HAHAHAHA"... "I'm Cornholio! HAHAHAHAHA"........Do you see what I'm getting at?

Mike Judge is a liberal, tree-hugging dog-loving hippie elitist and shame on him for daring to insult dumb people. He's from the South and so am I so I can see his frustration with the backwards ideals grasping our region. This is certainly one of those movies that pretends to be about the future but is really about our present. 59 million Americans just voted to re-elect one of the most inept presidents this country has ever had and yet if you say anything negative about this, you're an elitist. Too bad 56 million Americans voted for John Kerry. Those 56 million people are elitists who are dangerous to our country.

The whole "fans of B&B wont get this movie" is a ridiculious statement. I like B&B and "Office Space" (which I saw twice in theaters). Who is to say what a person would like based on taste or intelligence? Basically this guy is saying the stupid (ie B&B fans) just wouldn't understand sutle humor and only stupid people watch(ed) B&B. I was talking to a co-worker just this week about "Beavis & Butt-head" (the "testies, testies, one, two... three!?!?!" line in particular). We both agreed it was an easy laugh but what made it so brilliant is that no one before that ever thought to put the line in anything. You can say that about the shows entire run. Sure it's sophmoric humor but it was all very original. "Office Space" has a much more observational sense of humor but I find the film equally hysterical. Basically, humor often comes out of experience not education. If you can identify with the humor, you can probably laugh at it as well.

"Mr Green" is guilty of the very same ignorance he accuses B&B of harnessing. As mentioned already in this talk back B&B was some of the finest satire of its time. Those who love pop culture routinely feasted on the inside jokes and seemingly arbitrary (but in reality scathing) comments the two handed down, typically while watching videos. Pull your head out of your Cornholio, Green.

I always love it when someone attacks something for being a ripoff of the movie or TV show they like, without realizing that their show is in fact a ripoff of something else. Futurama didn't invent the "person travelling forward in time" storyline. Neither did Sleeper. I don't think Kornbluth did either. In some ways is doesn't really matter, it's what each adaptation of the story does with it. There are only something like 50 basic story plotlines anyway, everything is just a version of those basic stories. I think Judge has a great eye for satire. I think Office Space was a brilliant send up of corporate culture, both the cubicle style and the stupid TGI Friday's style, with a nice cameo by Judge himself. I am sure this movie will be funny, wherever he mined the basics of the story from.
