Finally, I'm excited -- I can only hope the movie is 120 minutes of exterior shots of the factory. I now realize how important it is for "Wonka" to be remade. Maybe the success of this one will get that much-needed "E.T." remake on the fast track to Greenlight City.

If there's one movie in all of cinematic history that just cries out for a remake, it's Willy Wonka. I can only hope that this new version meets the high standard set by previous classic-film remakes, such as Casablanca and It's a Wonderful Life.

Wow. I actually clicked on this link with glee. Not because I am excited in any way about this movie, but because it reminded me of long ago in the beforetime when AICN actually used to post spy pics from movie sets. These, however, are dreadfully underwhelming. THAT's the factory? Looks like some crappy building on Coruscant. Or a set from "Equilibrium." The Wonka trucks --- shrug. They just look like painted Ryder trucks or something. And that last pic... c'mon. I can drive to the crappy part of my town and snap pics like that all day long. And yeah, that pic of Depp as Wonka? That just can't be the final look of the character, can it? So far, this movie is nothing to be excited about. I know, I know, Depp is brilliant. Hey, I like Depp as much as the next guy. In fact, call me a fan. But this just isn't doing it for me.

With the first film being such a classic- and with these photos just showing me how not necessary this whole venture is (do the factories really look all that different? does the van look all that amazing? does Wonka's hat not look like the same fucking hat Wilder wore?)- my question is- why didn't Burton just do THE FUCKING SEQUEL "CHARLIE AND THE GREAT GLASS ELEVATOR"????? This is only redeemable if that is indeed the plans after this remake is in the can...

A movie of the Big Friend Giant would absolutely rock shit. It's an incredibly well wrote story and would adapt to the screen so well. Granted, I cannot wait for this remake, but I gotta agree with the other poster that new Dahl stuff would be awesome. Hell, I'd even love to see his Biography books turned into movies. Some great story telling in those pages...

Usually I am totally against remaking classics (like "Psycho") or movies which, like "Willy Wonka" are so famous that they feel like classics. But if you look at the original "Willy Wonka," it has two problems: (1) it takes FOREVER spending time -- with actors who aren't entertaining --to get the story moving and to the Wonka factory and Gene Wilder's marvelous Wonka and (2)the production values were, let's face it, 1971-cheap (producer David Wolper shot the thing in Germany for about 100 Deuschemark.) Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka is a great performance, his lines were great, even some of those tunes were hummable (remember Sammy Davis' version of "Candy Man"?) but if Burton and Depp can make a movie that gets moving more quickly and doesn't look like an industrial documentary on German factories, the new "Willy Wonka" could be a nice companion piece to the original.

I'm sure pratically everyone here has. Dozens of times. But a FILM and a BOOK are two different things. A movie should hardly ever be 100% faithful to a book. It's two different mediums. The Shining was a great movie. It was also a great book. But when Jerko King HAD to do it over with Mick Garris to be JUST LIKE THE BOOK it turned into a fucking disaster. I myself don't feel that Burton has really proved himself in the last few years. If anything he should have made the sequel- I can absolutely see GLASS ELEVATOR being a better Burton film than the first Wonka. And to say that the Wilder movie isn't a classic- well I just can't comment on such insanity... REMAKES are destroying Hollywood- they're coming quicker and quicker in between! Now they're going to remake ANIMAL HOUSE and THE WARRIORS!!! Where will it end? And we've already seen Burton on remakes- Apes was awful. Wasn't that a good enough clue? Do we REALLY need cgi oompas?

...that, while the book rocked my imagination and remains the definitive origin of the mythos, the movie is a classic that stands on its own merits for rocking my senses and sticking otherwise silly songs in my head to this day. Wilder took the character and made it his own. It's kind of like comparing The Lord of the Rings movies to the books. Different animals entirely and each pretty close to perfect for what they are. Personally I'm looking forward to a glimpse of the darker side of Wonka through Burton's twisted vision, but I don't know if I'll even be able to make an apples to apples comparison between the two movies when it's all said and done. We'll have to wait and see how Burton and Depp handle it.

Look... I'm an old-school alternative type, an "art fag", and what a lot of people called "goth" in the 80's... But I think Burton has shown us that he can't think outside his own box. He's always perverting stories just to display how creepy and weird he thinks he is, and it was great in Beetlejuice and Pee Wee's Big Adventure, but ever since the 90's Burton has just sucked and done a lot of self-referential shit. I'm sick of him. All we're going to get is the same movie as before, but with some creepy, quirky additions and weird special effects. The plot will be dumbed-down, and the makeup and effects will take center stage. That's Burton in a nutshell.
