Looking forward to seeing Huckabees

From what I have seen it looks strange enough to really appeal to me.

During the scene, we can hear Beaks' voice drone on and on, while we watch the expression change ever so gradually on Dirty Harry's face. Then, we get to see and hear (or more likely, simply see) Dirty Harry's inevitable response. The same type of scene would work if we substitute Cassidy (from Preacher) for Dirty Harry. In a pinch, we can even make do by substituting Arnie's Terminator character for Dirty Harry. I wonder how many (and which) other characters we can substitute for Dirty Harry and still have a fun scene.

Jon Brion is adequately decent but to put him in the same breath as Herrmann shows how little you know about music in film. Herrmann had an understanding of how music worked in a film far surpassing just about everybody out there working today. Plenty are close. Jon Brion is no where near.
And one more thing...

Herrmann didn't take a decade to get there. He nailed it on his first film score "Citizen Kane".

I agree that Jon Brion's scores are sweet. I've seen him a couple times at Largo here in LA and he's amazing. But have you heard his album "Meaningless?" It's terrible. Grade A terrible. Don't know what went wrond there.

I've been a fan since his days in Jellyfish and The Grays. His work on Aimee Mann's solo records and on Rhett Miller's solo disc is great. And in addition to his film scores, his album "Meaningless" is terrific adult pop. Unfortunately I don't live anywhere near LA or I'd be at Largo every Friday.

How about this: Mr. Beaks talks to Uncle Junior from the Sopranos. Uncle Junior makes his "I'm eating a lemon" face. Hilarity ensues.
Punch-Drunk Love

What about his Punch Drunk Love score? Creepy and off-kilter, emotional and touching and romantic all at once. It really set the tone of the film and grounded it's semi-reality. I LOVE his score, and it's the perfect complement to one of the most passionately emotional movies I've ever seen.
At least Beaks understands that there's NO APOSTROPHE IN "HUCKAB

Everyone gets it. Everyone got it the first time, I'm sure. The fact that people are ignoring you, for the most part, means that nobody thinks it's funny. People are always going to make premature judgements on the Talkbacks; your persistence is useless.

"You've gotta hope, That there's someone for you, strange as you are, who can cope, with the things that you do, without trying too hard." In case you don't know, that's an excerpt from Jon Brion's song on the short film "Blossoms and Blood," on the Punch-Drunk Love DVD. Beautiful lyrics, beautiful song. And that song on the Huckabees trailer is great too.
Never thought I'd see a headline like that up at AICN

This is about the coolest thing I've ever seen here. Jon Brion (for my money) is one of the ten best pop songwriters in America right now, and frankly a fucking musical genius. To see him get recognition from this site is just amazingly cool. You couldn't pay me to live in LA, but I am blisteringly jealous that you get a chance to see him at work every week. You kids are some very lucky folks. Of course, I did have the good fortune to see him at Seattle's own Sunset Tavern just this Sunday. Meaningless is a work of art, as is Ro Sham Bo. Let's hope he puts out another album someday... Oh and Mr. Beaks, I salute you.

That was an excellent score. ESotSM's score is pure bliss.
Jon Brion, Fiona Apple, etc.

What's up with Fiona's album? What's the problem? I know plenty of Fiona fans. I know plenty of crap that gets released with considerably wide distribution that has far fewer fans. I've heard two tracks on the web (that weren't supposed to be posted as far as I heard), and they are fantastic. From what I had read, Fiona and Jon had a superb working relationship. If anyone with any connection to this project is reading this and can tell me something more substantive than rumors, please do so. (By the way, I'm moving out to L.A., and the Largo is one of my first planned Friday night stops.)

That's been one of the burning questions over on the Elliott Smith board. Also, does Jon Brion still have the recordings he and Elliott Smith did together? It's rumored that Elliott got rid of them, wwhich might be the reason that the wonderful song "True Love" is not on the final album. Does Brion have a copy of the song? The world must know!

A statement poo pooing the works of Morricone and Herrman is the reason people vote for Keira Knightley as sexiest movie actress ever. Just a strange cinematic form of alzheimers.
Poor usage of 'rant', for starters

If you're using 'rant' in an American vernacular, it's meant to be used in a negative light. This was nothing but ass-licking & meandering praise for Mr. Brion. Regardless, Jon Brion admittedly has mad skills, and can pretty much accomplish anything he sets his musical mind to. However, when the coffin's closed, I predict he'll be remembered chiefly as a "producer/multi-instrumentalis t", 'cause that's where he truly swims like a shark, and the film scores will be more like sidebars to an encompassed career.
