I love ER... I absolutely love it.. I watch it twice every morning on TNT; religiously... But now, it just seems like they're trying to advertise it as a frickin' big-budget suspense movie.. Every ad seems to point the audience to the "big shock" next week; as if every character is going to have some huge, character defining moment on a weekly basis. The way they're selling the show, which really doesn't need to be sold to it's faithful followers, is becoming ridiculous.. I dunno.. Now, I liked tonight's show.. I even welled up when Weaver, who I've always hated, got custody of her child. I forgot who the fat black dude was, so I didn't really care about his death.. Neela annoys the hell out of me, though she is gorgeous.. I never tire of Abby; man, I love Maura Tierney... Carter and what's her name's relationship is heartbreaking... I dunno.. I love me some ER..
but...

like you said, it is getting way too over-the-top. Every couple of weeks, there is a huge disaster. The believability of this show is going down the shitter. Plus, the turnover of the characters has been way too high the last couple of years. It is hard to care about the characters on the show when a whole new batch of news ones show up every year and the ones you identify with leave.
Good... but not great

true, the show's last truly great episodes passed away with Dr. Green. Tonight was a decent opener, not up to previous standards, but still a hell of a lot better than almost any of the crap being passed off in prime time. Scotty Grimes surprised me with some actual charcter growth- or at least semi-competance. He was (intentionally) annoying last season, but if he is given a chance to grow a bit I wouldn't mind seeing him in the regular cast. Plus, Good Ole Grimey was one of my favorite things about Band of Brothers, so he automatically gets bonus points.
Isn't this Noah Wyle's last seaon?

I couldn't agree more -- this thing is cooked, and then some. Last year's big cliffhanger ending was basically laughable. "Hey, let's have some big situation at the end that's got nothing to do with anyone or anything about the show, a completely random and stupid event. Pratt, because he's just such a badass, pisses someone off while on the road and so the guy starts shooting from the car!" Ripped from the headlines!!..... of 1995 (& even that's probaby not long ego enough, hell I don't know) I remember watching that last May and going "WTF?? What did that have to do with ANYTHING??" Not to mention that I wanted Pratt to bite it since he's always been such an unlikeable character (& not even like Romano, who was at least an INTERESTING unlikeable character). They wasted all this work last year setting up Pratt to basically be the next #1 male lead, when I really can't see this show lasting 2 more yrs overall. It's steadily been being beaten the last few years by "CSI" (though IMO another inferior show -- christ, like 97% of network TV blows. I need HBO). Alex Kingston is leaving a year too late, probably even more. She'll finally be written out this season, while there was no point in any of her screen time last year (likely not much at all after Greene's death, really). And Noah Wyle, the rock of that show forever and best character there is, is FINALLY leaving to go start furthuring his career, only about 2 years later than he should've.

Goran Visnjic. I certainly hope they give him something better than his self-destructive bachelor storyline this season. I wish they'd do more of him in Africa (minus the French-Canadian chick) but that's Carter's gig now.
They've already planned a big sweeps event . . .

Osama Bin Laden will personally fly an airliner (filled with cannisters of sarin and anthrax and some radioactive dirty-bombs) into the hospital's ER. In the midst of the fire and carnage Dr. Carter faces the ethical dilemma - does he save Osama or let him bleed to death??? Seriously, how many different vehicles have crashed or been involved in accident at the ER? has the El crashed into it yet?(I haven't actually watched in 7 years - i just see the ads)
gimmicky season finale

I agree that I was a bit disappointed with last year's finale, but I think the resolved it in an interesting way last night. Those first several minutes just sitting and waiting in the sinking car were interesting, and the show actually got around to some character development with Neela and Sam and Abby, and even Morris, who I think should be made a regular cast member with his own place in the credits and everything. I wasn't too thrilled about the abrubt resolution to Weaver's court problem, however. Overall, I'd say that the quality of ER has gone down since Greene left. "Orion in the Sky" and "The Beach" were two of the best episodes ever produces, but the show is far from being as terrible as all of the trolls like to claim. So some new show like CSI has come along and taken over the spotlight...that doesn't bother me. I always know what I'll be watching on Thursday nights.
Didn't this used to be a show about a hospital? From the ads, i

Didn't they even have a tank attack the hospital or something? This show is the reason I hope West Wing ends with the end of the second term (two more seasons?).

#1 helicopter falls on Romano. #2 helicopter slices off Romano's arm. Pretty gutsy moves for a weekly TV show. ER is past its prime but is still better than the heavily promoted new shows. I have no desire whatsoever to see "Dr. Vegas."

Josh Jackson would have been a great addition to ER and refreshing way to bring back life to an aging show.

Here we are stuck with less and less original network drama and everybody's ripping this show. Man, someday there will be no network drama and the 11th season of ER will be looking pretty good, believe me.****There's still plenty to like because so many of the characters are sound and likable, not to mention well-acted. Pratt and Abbey alone make this show worth watching. Even Kovach and Chen aren't that annoying anymore. And I've always liked that chick that was on "Freaks and Geeks". It's good to see some struggling working class people in a drama. I do amit, however, that Carter looks like he's phoning it in. And the resolution with the child was way too fast, as someone else has already noted. In my opinion this show has not jumped the shark. Miss Nurse Hathaway, though...

Did anyone else notice that the new intern is Doogie Howser? ... I'm almost sure of it... that will be hilarious. As for those of you trashing the show - go watch some crap reality television, or lame shows with actors that can't act. ER is good TV. Not GREAT, but inarguably better than 90% of the schlock out there. It deserves to be on. Oh, and where was Sherri Stringfield?

Yes, this show might be OK, but I gave up once the heli landed on Romano. It's no doubt better than any reality-crap on now, but talk about damning with faint praise. Bring back Ross and Hathaway! Or at least have the Ghost of Romano haunting the ER (or the helipad?).

I fear NBC will keep running this series indefinitely. Just change out the cast and producers whenever anybody gets tired or too uppidity. I really could see E.R. becoming this way -- a prime time serial drama, like a soap opera, which runs for decades.
