I only saw half the clip. But how goddamn boring. Could someone please teach the orientals what an establishing shot is...we don'tt need 6-7 differenct angles of the same thing. Must be truly great story telling to focus on the scenery

6-7 shots to establish setting as well as mood are film making techniques used by Hitchcock and other masters of cinema. Of course how would someone using the term 'orientals' have a clue?

Your post reeked of ignorance pimper of babies. A little rule of thumb - Oriental is used to describe a rug or flavor of soup, the term Asian is used to describe the people.

Ok. Lou's Tavern in Fight Club...lets show the outside of the building from above, now lets show some bottles on the curb next to the parking lot, now lets show a tuft of grass from a crack in the pavement, now lets show the neon sign up close...now lets show flies buzzing around a bum in the alley behind the bar, now lets show Brad pitt and the other guy walking into the bar. Next scene. Are you fucking kidding me? You know why hitch-cock is so special, he tackeled material that didn't involve a fucking showtunes or a dance number. Consider the area. The first to break new ground are always reveared. How easy is it to hitch up to that bandwagon. Now somebody tell those fucking soup making, rug weaving oriental slant eyed yellow slopes to hire an editor and maybe a writer that doesn't find the meaning of the universe in every hallmark card he reads.

Im the biggest Shirow fan that I know...and I thought I would really be looking forward to this... but, man, the last thing I want to see is this parade.. animation is top notch, no doubt-- but so uninteresting ... and the one thing that I really want is a Shirow work animated in a SHIROW STYLE...which is why I love Shirows art in the first place... I would rather watch the cut scenes in the "Ghost in the Shell" PS2 game -- now THATS what i was wanting. Props do go out to the people who worked on this new movie coming out-- its definatley high art and done very well... but Im sorry to say its not the Shirow that I was hoping to see. :(

And I agree that the 2d characters look like cardboard cutouts in front of the 3d environments. It doesn't help that the 2d is animated at half the frame rate of the 3d (or less). I never understood why people got so excited about the first one, this looks prettier but more dull.

Deeply sorry that every countries style of filmmaking dosen't apease your obvious love for brainless Americanized style of filmmaking (McG, Jerry B, Paul "AvP" Anderson, , etc). Japanese animated films mostly are known for being very philosophical, profound, and stylized types of films. If mindless violence is what you want then go watch the Battle Royale films from Japan. But to ignorantly and most obviously hatefully point out shortcomings that are worthless in your defense or lack there of debate is a waste of my read. The mere fact you said "orientals" totally not only made me realize your a hateful jaded unmedicated person but proved factually you are a lowlife waste of conception in our society. Because no person with a proper education, degree, and a job with medical/perscription/mental health benefits that are in fact properly medicated in their right mind would conduct themselves in such a way. Being synically witty with a mixture of film knowledge dosen't give you any credibility when you speak/type in that hard to understand language called.... "Trailer Park". ;)
Wow indeed!

you're not a very nice guy. did you know that there are alot of people in this world that are different than you and me? it's true. we all like and do different things than everyone else. for instance, i like battle royale a whole lot (but not for it's 'mindless violence'). i think it's a really good film for other reasons. however i also think that other movies suck like casshern. i thought the ghost in the shell footage was beautiful. and it doesn't bother me that the combined 3d and 2d is there. i think it gives it an overall feeling that is really nice. but to get back to what i was saying...shut up.

TheKingInYellow, you missed the point of his post a bit there, rather than insult you I suggest you go back and read it again, he WAS sticking up for the greater good if you notice. And MJbabypimper, to insult you instead, well, you couldn't be any more of an idiot if you tried, there's no point even arguing that. The original Ghost is a great manga and made a wonderful, thoughtful movie, no less so because it was animated, and the sequel? it just blows my mind, I never expected anything so amazing. Roll on Steamboy, make it a stellar year for anime.

Okay someone help me out here, why did we stop calling people from the Orient Oriental? Why do we call people from the Orient Asian now? The vast majority of Russian territory in in Asia and yet we do not refer to Russians as Asian. India is also in Asia and yet we do not refer to Indians as Asian. So why do former Orientals get that distinction seeing as how they share Asia with so many people that do not? I've asked many "Asian" people about this and even they don't get it.
isn't it funny

My original post was not to insult asians or orientals or whatever they are called, it was to point out how slow the first half of the clip was. It was beautiful with its colors and use of asian/oriental culture, I especially liked how they incorporatd the dragons into the stop lights...but it was too long! Establishing shot for a futuristic parade could have ended after the first 2 shots. But it lasted for I don't know...6-7. It was just too long. ANd the entire time I was thinking, please dont let the people be 2d, please let them stand out as vibrant and beautiful as the scenery. All my other comments regarding race were to push buttons of any posters I could. But I stand by my original thoughts which were anime seems to try to hard to be deep when infact its just self gratifing violent porn. I own Ghost in the shell and Ninja Scroll. Ninja was by far a better story becuase of all the great charachters...but it tried way to hard to be deep. I never once cared for the plight of any anime character with the exception of any chick that got raped by a 7 dicked demon from the japanese underworld... (see legend of the overfiend) Anime is good for new and interesting visions of the future but not much else. I always wanted to know why the animation always seemed so boring with the camera pans and the characters standing still or talking with the camera behind them. Talk about lazy animators.

this little taste sure blew me away. And I'm REALLY TALKING ABOUT THIS TRAILER, OR WHATEVER YOU CALL IT. It's magnificent, you don't even have to be able to understand the dialogue to be overcome by the magic. And then I read your post headings and have to think, wow, how much brain damage does it take to be a reg here? Harry's a bit of OK, but I think the majority of you pitiful hangers-on need to have your palates cleaned. Either that, or you're all so fucking insecure that the only way you know to keep up your defences is to diss stuff- the more over your heads, the better. You know what, I hope you all choke in your own ignorant shit, and I don't care if I get deleted/banned for this. I like the site, but every time I scroll down to these forums, sooner or later I wanna throw up. Fuck you losers. Harry, thanks for sharing that incredible footage. I'll be sure to get/go to the movie. I love learning about other kinds of film, and man, this is great stuff. In my opinion? You should dump 3/4 of these fucktards that are just hanging around here to flap their mouths and get some reflected glory, and clear the road for some real cinema buffs. Amen.
RE: J.D. and the obsession with Shirow

Number one, J.D. hit the nail on the head with his post. I applaud you. Second, to the two guys mourning the loss of Shirow's artwork: guys, you have Stand Alone Complex to slake your Shirow artwork jones. Personally, while I respect Shirow for laying the groundwork for all of this, I respect Oshii more for stripping away the over-humorous dead weight and cybernetics fetishes that oft-times screwed up the tone of the manga. The most interesting parts of the manga were always the ones focusing on the conflict between growing technology and loss of humanity. I'm probably in a minority here, since I'm not quite a robotics/"ooh, look at the gun design" guy....but the design was less important to me than the story, which is what the film gave me in spades.

babypimper, where ever you are in the midwest somewhere, you should really get out more. I really feel sorry for how little you know about cinema (and the orientals). Pulp Fiction is claimed to have been one of the most groundbreaking films of the decade simply due to the fact that most of the dialogue had absolutely nothing to do with the story yet adding so much substance to the movie. It's the horrible movies that have characters (or scenery) that only tries to move the story forward with nothing else in mind. On the same note, you must have hated every R rated film you saw in the last 20 years with multiple shots of gratuituous nudity that really had nothing to do with the movie at all.

Some of my favorite scenes in the first movie were the shots of people walking around, the rain, traffic on the street with the awesome music playing. I don't know why I loved that stuff so much, but I did. It doesn't bore me, but then again, 2001 doesn't bore me either. The only problem I have with this scene is the fact that the CGI is SO good, then the cel stuff doesn't stand a chance. "Metropolis" had the same problem, and some of the cel stuff in that was jaw dropping in it's own right. It just seems like if they're going to spend all this money for the CGI, they should have a higher budget(or perhaps remove some detail from the CGI?) for the hand drawn to beef up the frame count, especially if the people are moving in slow motion. Still, very nice.
Motoko vs Batou

I'll be watching this film in a few hours, but I have a comment I'd like to make about almost every single appraisal I've heard of it so far. Although technically it could be argued that Kusanagi's character is simply better defined (being the only real "human" focus of the first film, afterall...) and that she simply may be better fleshed out, I can GUARANTEE EVERYONE that when someone complains about Batou being a boring character in comparison what they actually meant to say was "He doesn't have tits, OMGWTF?". You'd be surprised how many people can claim to love the first film and completely miss out on WHY she flits about naked, instead choosing to whack off to this and elaborate mobile tank designs. Also if you can't see the brilliance of the GITS and Innocence's musical scores, regardless of what you think of the content of said films, you suck unconditionally.
