Tommy's got the right idea dammit. Lucas knows what storytelling is. He does stuff with his stories that is original, in a world over ridden with excessive violence, sex (which I don't mind usually) and drugs (the dark side :>) Lucas is gonna be able to tell a simple story that will make us think, cause it's simple, it don't focus on anything now'a'days, it reminds us of The Happy Days an crap, hoping for a new fonz

I can't help but wonder, is that going to be one of the catch phrases that will permanently imbed it self into American Culture. Not as catchy as 'May the Force be with you' or 'Come with me to the Dark Side' though. The Oriole Bird

I never liked the idea of the prequels. No matter what they give us, we know how it'll turn out. The cans look cool. All I can say is that George Lucas shouldn't over-market episode one. Just make sure everyone knows it is coming to theatres and keep the ads tasteful and make sure they don't give away plotlines. Make sure John Williams's score is complete so you can use it in the trailers. Stay away from pull-quotes, but if you use them, make sure they are Time magazine, Roger Ebert, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, Entertainment Weekly, and USA Today. This movie will have legs like noone has ever seen. Think about it: Beavis & Butthead 2, Wild Wild West, Matrix, X-Men, Freddy Vs. Jason, The Deep Blue Sea, Mission: Impossible 2, The Real Inspector Gadget, Die Hard 4. None of them stand much of a chance. The prequel will be number one for more than a month.

The cans certainly look good, but don't you think they could come up with better photos? After all, everyone has seen the photos of the actors looking non-prequel. They could do better and come up with some actual images from the movie.

Wasn't "Choose Wisely" the phrase used by the ancient knight who was guarding the Holy Grail in the last Indy Jones movie? Does Lucas think we have a short-term memory?

And isn't Palpatine supposed to be considerably younger in this film? I thought the actor was appearing sans make-up. At least, that's how he appears in a recent SW Insider magazine.

And I hope that isn't Ewan's hair for the movie. What a sissypants.

I agree that Palpatine looks too old. In fact, I'd swear that it is an image taken from ROTJ. In which case the cans are either fakes or more likely very early mock-ups by Pepsi to test out ideas before they can get hold of some decent Episode 1 pictures themselves. Geez - if Pepsi can't get real pictures then what hope do we mortals have before next May?!

That's the same headshot of her they used on STARWARS.COM as soon as they announced the cast and BEFORE any footage was shot. If these were official designs, I'm sure they would have used a shot from the film footage, not a stock headshot. These are definitely fakes.

First of all, I'm a coca-cola man myself, but I'd never let that get in the way of a good product placement. I agree with all the previous comments, because that's the kind of ass-kisser I am...but I've got to say, Natalie Portman will be to the early part of the twenty first century what Carrie Fisher was to the 70's. And the cans themselves? They looked great. Are they real? Let me just consult my rocket-firing Boba Fett....

Keep in mind these are only prototypes, which means the cast photos could be replaced with actual prequel shots for the final design. Graphic designers often use different photos just to visualize what it will look like before they do the final designs with the actual photos.

Why? Because I've never seen Ewan's hair like that before. I take it that's his Obi-Wan do, then. Cool! "Choose Wisely..." One of my favourite lines from Last Crusade. No complaints here with them using it -- I always thought that Guardian of the Grail would've made a fine Jedi, anyway. And thanks for pointing to the link, Fast! Sounds like Padme's character is going to be much more complex than I thought. HEY! Harry's picture just winked at me! Quit that!
Ewan's picture
by Fast
Aug 8th, 1998
10:10:03 AM
Actually, I think that picture of Ewan is from a costume drama he was in on BBC1 a few years ago, before he did Trainspotting (I may be wrong, though.) However, I still think that the cans are genuine but that Pepsi have used old photos for the prototypes. It's quite probable that Pepsi will show these to Lucasfilm and then between them sort out some decent photos that will fit the gaps between the text and the Pepsi logo better.

look at the high-res pictures with the lo-res text next to them so you have nothing to read. If the text was the same res as the pics, which they would be had it been real, it would have been easy to read. I've seen the same thing before with the fake Resident Evil movie posters awhile ago.

Nutritional info
by Fast
Aug 8th, 1998
11:16:24 AM
Think about it, Matt... the designer wants to see how the concept works out, and that includes matching it for size, shape, colour and so on with all the other info on the can, including the nutritional information, bar code, etc.. It may not be relevant to Star Wars, but it still forms part of the overall can design.

I agree natalie is damn fine and thank god she is on board for all three from what i have understood...hopefully she can don (cant spell sorry) somthing close to that of what leia did in rotj!! There was a mini update on the starwars website that the film is officially going to be realeased on may 21st thank god! we are one step closer to the coolest movie to come since godzilla lol ha ha no way since ID4 lol ha ha no way MIB well that was pretty cool but no match, since oh well hell since the original A New Hope came out!!! Spread the word about star wars people lets make this the highest grossing film of all time and not just because we live and die it but because its on hell of a movie for everyone. Come on now .....guys like the shoot it up, space battles and cool effects but the story is basically a soap opera in space and that has a great appeal to many different individuals rather than on group. This saga has it all and therefor almost everyone should love to see this film but only word of mouth will get the ted kazinsky's out of their backwood's homes leaving behind mail bombs etc to see such a great film!! Ok so i went a bit overboard but you get my point i hope ......till the next star wars news bye bye

The Pepsi can graphics are just mock-ups to give the general idea of what they will look like when released. Pepsico paid big bucks for the rights to both the original trilogy and the new trilogy, so they will be going all out to tie-in with them. I think the design is pretty cool, and can't wait to see what the final graphics will look like. As an employee of Pepsi, I will get an early peek at all of the graphics involved in this promotion. So there.....

In response to the guy who asked why they would put the full nutrition info on the mock ups, the answer is that the information is alredy availiable, so why not put it on the graphics. That way they know how it will look with graphics and necessary information. BTW Harry, I have been a fan of your site ever since I got a computer, but the jury's till out on the new design. First Yahoo! chat, then Mania magazine, now this.

Liam Neeson's character isn't on any of the can designs we saw, but that doesn't mea he won't get a can. Look at the botom of the pics. These are numbers 1-4 of _24_ cans! There are going to be 24 different designs. Most likely the designs will spread out through Pepsi's other flavors. Does that mean I'm going to have to buy that horrible Mountain Dew again to get the cans? Blech!

Ok, someone do a check here for me. Load up Photoshop, and check the proportions of the size of Portman's pic to the one found here at http://www.starwars.com/cast/p ortman/. Yea, the larger pic *could* have been resized down to fit the exact size but why would it be almost identical? Even at that, wouldn't you make your prototype graphics on a large board. I don't seem to recall these types of things being pieced together in things like Photoshop. Of course I could be wrong, any corporate graphic artists out there? Also, do a check on the Obi-Wan image. Side note: if these are indeed fake, the Emperor pic is an insult my intelligence. I'm expected to believe he's strinking the same pose he did shocking Luke with Dark Side electricity all for a Pepsi can that's supposed to show him 20 years younger? If they are real though, I can see them testing out images to fit the cans. Looks a bit too home generated to me though.

Haven't you self-assured naysayers read what Harry said? These are layouts using available photos, to see how it works out. Just because *you* you create an almost as good version, so what?! That's great, but why does that somehow mean that because *you* can make them, some lower-level Graphics artist can't show the big boss what they will be creating sometime this fall or winter, if not even later. The spy who sent this in wanted to share his good fortune, and I'm grateful for it. Somehow all you others can do is shoot it down like some Ebert-maniac.

I believe these are the real deal. If they are not then I must give alot of credit to the author of this hoax. The written part seems to be well developed and thought out. One thing strikes me as odd though. If they are so early in the prototype stage (as the headshots suggest) how did they know the exact number would be 24? That wouldn't seem necessary in such an early stage. The number given seems to suggest that the author of the hoax may have wanted it to seem much bigger than it is by showing only a small piece of the whole promotion. He (or she)would only be able to write as much as they knew about the prequels so that the hoax wouldn't be obvious. Of course maybe Pepsi only released these prototype pics because they don't give away much more than is already known, which could explain the absence of Liam Neeson. *^*^*^*^*^*^*^^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* ^*^ IF THIS ISN'T MAKING SENSE IT DOESN'T MAKE IT LIES ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* ^*^

I think everybody is taking these cans WAY too seriously. I know nothing about graphic design and marketing and I really could care less about why they left Liam off, or why the Emperor's picture shows him in the exact pose as the ESB SE poster. Why? Because I love STAR WARS no matter what and I would hate to see ANY image of anything relating to the new movie 9 months before I got to see it on the big screen. And by the way, Natalie's head-shot isn't a headshot at all. It's entirely non-STAR WARS even. Just visit any Natalie Portman site and you'll see these images. I actually have that picture and have had it on my hard drive for nearly 2 years! If anybody wants it, e-mail me and I'll shoot it over to you. And as far as this Pepsi debate is concerned (I love Pepsi, but that's not the point), if you had any real STAR WARS interest, you would have known for years that they were doing the promos! So, why are you bitching now? Deal with it! As long as there's no Pepsi logo's on any ships, or Taco Bell wrappers filling young Anakin's bedroom trash bin, or the Pizza Hut name engraved on the shaft of any lightsaber, PLEASE DON'T LET THIS BOTHER YOU! And if somebody offered you million$ of dollars to have their name associated with your movie, and it didn't compromise your artistic integrety, would YOU say "no"? I would hope not, because there really is nothing wrong with that. slave

I mean if yall think that this is as bad as its gonna get, yall are gonna despise the ad frenzy (although star wars I will probly be the only movie in the history of cinema that wont need one) that youll be bombarded with come next year. If u dont drink pepsi, fine. Save those damn santa cans that coke pumps out and drink them while watching the show. I really wouldn't mind takin' a swig from Natalie Portman, but I refuse to put my straw in Sam Jackson. Knowing Pepsi, they WILL put the character's/ actor's photos on the cans just so geeks like us will spend bocu bucks at every vending machine we can find to see if that oh so valuable Liam Neeson pops out. The irony in all this is we will spend more than the aluminum and fizzy caramel water is worth. As for if these images are legit, I would say for the moment yes, but in May '99 these prototypes will have been replaced with official SW1 cast headshots.

IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO READ THIS DO NOT READ BELOW: A good source, who has told me good news in the pass emailed me late last night with this news about Queen Padme in the Prequels "I saw on a few sites (including) yours about the Star Wars Prequels Pepsi Cans. I was so happy to see Natalie on a can. Can't wait to get one! Anyway, I remember a guy I use to go to college with now works for the Pepsi Company over in Laguna Beach, Calf. I thought I was call him to ask about the prequel promo cause he works in the advertising part of Pepsi. He told me he new about it and they were going to start working on the promo stuff early in 99 but a few things are on the drawing board now. We started talking about Natalie and her role. He told about the BIO of Queen Padme that will appear on the drink can. He said he had more detail information about her role and then put me on hold for about five min. He came back and then told me what he remember what it said about Queen Padme: 'After Padme goes in to hiding, and Amidala's handmaiden, Sache takes over as the "Queen" of Naboo, she has to make one of the hardest decisions of her young life. It seems that a group of Mandalorian , is planing an attack on Padme's planet. She has learned of the attack thanks to one of the members of the Republic Senate, named Palpatine. It seem Palpatine is her only hope to stop the attack. Its not as easy as it sounds cause Palpatine is not to sure he wants to help out. If Naboo is attacked it will be much easier for Palpatine to take over Naboo and he can become its President. But if he lets the Mandalorian attack then thousands will die. A unknown Jedi Knight comes to Padme in her darkest hour and warns her that she must fight the Mandalorain herself with out the help of Palpatine and his men. He tells Padme that Palpatine is the one that planed the attack so that he can take over Naboo, that way he could have a stronger hold on the Republic Senate. Now Padme most decide if she should listen to this rough Jedi Knight or trust the man that is like a 'father' to her." That is what he told me or something very close to it. I asked him to try and get me any copies or picture of Promo items he has. If he does I will send it your way. If you have any info that can show me its a fake BS story can give us any light on this please email us. oracseven7@aol.com nat_times@yahoo.com www.americasqueen.base.org countingdown/natalieportman thanks

These Pepsi cans are fake and I can give you two reasons why. 1st of all, look at the photos. if you go to www.starwars.com and go to the Casting for Episode I, these are the exact same photos. It would be very easy to fake these. Second of all, look at the Palpatine photo. He does not look all wrinkly and he does not have yellow eyes in Episode I. He has blue eyes as you can see on the main site's section on Palpatine. He is only about 55 years old in Episode I. Jon

I don't thin that all of you pessimists should worry about whether or not these cans are fakes. It is getting so close to prequal date (compared to when i first heard of it) that any merchandising rumor is fun to read. The best thing about merchanding of movies is that you get a sneek peek at stuff that has been under cover for a long time. Remeber when nobody knew what the big godzilla looked like from that recent crap-ass movie? Well, anyone who went to a downtown Chicago blockbuster knew what he looked like two weeks in advance because that was when they stocked their godzilla toys. i hope that we can all hold on to those little desires of getting sneek peeks at the prequals. A couple months ago it seemed like a nice thing to look forward to, but now i get a head ache every time i think of it! Why can't they come now! me want star wars! By the way, here is a scary thought: what happens after the wait is over? What will we look forward to when the movies are out? The prequal special edition? The prequal holiday special starring yoda's family's house being invaded by moffs and death star gunners (hee hee that was ridiculous). we are all hooked forever.

Owing to his influence by such classics as "Seven Samurai", Lucas is again mining the well of Japanese culture, this time for an anime influence! When the Mandalorians attack, Padme's Jedi pal unleashes his secret weapon... the long played with idea, the KAIBURR CRYSTAL! Holding it aloft and crying "JEDIIII PO-WAH!!!!" Padme joins with her handmaiden to become the Jedi avenger... MAXI-PADME!!! Able now to blot out the stain of evil everywhere, even on her own Naboo!

Anikan is way to young to.....

...spawn any of the interesting parts I was hoping to see in this brand new trilogy. From the looks of the actor, Anikan is no older than six. Which sucks, because we'll never get to see how he became "Dart Vader". Because I assume he had to at least been in his late twenties or early thirties when it happened. I was hoping this trilogy would keep a strong linear epic stream like the former, and connect directly. From how young Anikan looks, "A New Hope" should have been Episode 7, instead of four. Because you figure if he's 6 to 12 like I presume, he'll be no older than maybe 8 to 14 once we reach episode three. We'll never get to see the interesting parts happen: 1. Luke and Liea's conception. 2. Anikan's conversion to the dark side of the force, and some of his early action as Darth Vader. The early formations of the empire so to speak. I hope they don't do "The Lion King" syndrome with this trilogy, which is: Episode 1: Anikan is 6, then in two he's twenty, then in three he's 38 and Darth Vader by mid movie. It just doesn't make an epic string. If what I theorize is true, Lucas is doing in three films, what should have been done in 6. And the thing is, this Episode 1 will not be the actual start of the Star Wars Universe, because Yoda was 800 and some years old in ESB. Plus most of the new people you will see, are all ready Jedi. So what's Lucas going to do if he wants to go deeper, release episodes 0-Negative 900? Yup, Negative 900 is where it all began. Any one have any ideas they want to pitch for SW Ep. N-900? I think he should have made Anikan older, and had the string of events in the trilogy, build more around the upbringing of the empire, Luke and Liea's birth, The Clone Wars, and Anikan's slow painful assimilation into Darth Vader and maybe even some early Vader action. I mean C'mon now, you can't have a Star Wars trilogy without Vader. He's the bad ass of all bad asses, and the best written villian I've ever had the pleasure to embrace. And that way the chain of events connect with Episode 4. I can see the linear path now, at the end of three Anikan is still a whiny little 14 year old brat{ who will probably get on everyone's nerves like STNG's WESLEY CRUSHER}. Then boom Episode 4{ the next LINEAR chapter in our story} has him as some powerful Sith Lord{ probably in his late 40's and can put every trek villian to shame, what a metamorphisis in one film, he goes from being Wesley Crusher, to the destroyer of The Federation.} tearing apart a renegade vessel{ which his FULLY MATURE Daughter is on board of as a princess. Boy so much time has passed, I can't keep up.}. And his fully grown son lives on the nearby planet Tattonie. Some people are going to have to wonder what happened during that 20 to 40 year gap. This is Star Wars, not STNG. We wan't details, we want to know how Anikan went from being a 14 year old punk to the best super villian our galaxy has ever known. If I don't get to see, or know how Anikan became Darth Vader, I'm sad to say as a SW fan, I'll be incomplete. Forget the last part of two sentences ago. I have to SEE how Anikan becomes Vader. You're killing me Lucas. It's not bad enough that you make us wait 16 years{ alot of people die in 16 years, all though I'm sure they've all ready seen them in heaven. For time does not exist in heaven and as a spirit, you can go anywhere anytime. But compared to the wonders that await us in heavan, Star Wars will probably be nothing but hogwash anyway}, but you're also going to leave us in the Dark about Vader's upcoming and rise to power{ the most important element of the SW series}, or cheapen it with a brief "Lion King" version{ instead of giving us the full, linear detailed scoop, which by making Anikan a 6 year old brat, would take six movies instead of three. Poor planning Lucas, I think in 1977 you should have put a 7 on that movie instead of a 4.}. I had a nightmare the other night, I went to see SW Ep.1 and came out crying, then I grew to be a bitter old man with a grudge against Lucas. I hope to God I'm not dissapointed with this trilogy. I think I am, because I will never get to see Vader's birth{ the only real reason I'm looking forward to seeing these films}. With Anikan being so young, without doing the "brief" version{ which is something I would not expect from a Sci-fi mastermind, who perfected every minute detail of his sequel trilogy. That's why I like the sequel trilogy better than, all 8 trek movies and four trek series combined. They don't deliver such perfection. If Lucas does it the "brief" way in this trilogy, he'll be leaving us with just to many holes.{ a thing trek tends to do on a constant basis, with lame 5 minute endings to totally ridiculous episodes}. I don't want "The Vader Story"{ that was my true vision for EP. 1-3. Anikan is not the most important element, his slow nudging conversion to the dark side is, his growth into Vader. Not just a brief summary of it{ like Voyager's lame brief existence of Tuvix, with Janeway's obnoxious voice overs}, we want the perfected details, and character development that makes us care. If it takes 6 movies to do it in, all Lucas has to do on the next "Special Additions" is change the numbers from 4,5, and 6 to 7,8 and 9, and update them with more dazzling special effects and more extra footage. Then as a SW fan, I'll be complete, I'll get to see his growth into Vader, no holes attached. We're not designing a golf course here, but an epic story line}, thus turning the whole experience into nothing more but swiss cheese. I'm not paying a grand total of 18 bucks, to view rotting, poorly aged swiss cheese. If I wanted to do that, while everyone is watching the films in the theater{ and crying I might add, and no not like they did at Titanic}, I'll be in the dairy section of my local grocery store having the same epic "heart felt" experience. After waiting 16 long years, I would have expected more from Lucas. Hey I'm a fuckin pshycic, I just predicted and wrote Ebert's review for the upcoming films. But I'm not proud of it. I hope I'm wrong, and the stuff this "loser" Harry{ who can't even write his own damn webpage} claims to know about the upcoming prequels is false, and just an engineered hoax to bring attention to his miserable and useless life. You better be wrong boy! GET A FREAKIN LIFE! I don't think you're important enough{ or any of your friends for that matter} to know all this shit. Leave it alone, you're jhinxing it buddy. Some things are best left seceret and not lied about, just to feul your small over inflated undeserved ego. Hell your so important that I'VE ALL READY FORGOTTEN YOUR NAME. I'm sorry for the massive flame, I'm just hoping that you're wrong, or just don't know enough to know what the fuck you're talking about. Just do us a favor, leave it alone. I think too much hype, jhinxs a film. I'd rather be surprised. Plus you giving us these lame tidbits of information isn't going to make them come any faster. I find when you obsess over an upcoming movie, time goes much slower than, if you just simply forget about it until it comes out. Your info sounds convincing, I just hope you're wrong. I don't want to come out of the theatre crying, or making the decision to wait for it to come out on video, because I end up seeing the preview and decide it isn't worth the effort to sit in the theatre with a bunch of loud and obnoxious SW fans. I'm a fan, but I have the common decency to keep my yap shut during the movie. And not yell "STAR TREK RULES".."YOU TELL'EM LUKE" or other inane comments that are not needed and just ruin the experience. Just do me one favor...PPPLLLLEEEEAAASSSSEE BE WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
