I think the credit goes to Cruise here, for convincing Paramount to take a chance on someone who hasn't directed a feature. Cruise was the one who approached Carnahan because he loved Narc, so it's nice he hasn't abandoned finding someone who isn't just a hired gun studio hack.

I agree that a JJ Abrams' M:I3 would kick major ass, but I don't want to see Alias suffer as a result. If he feels he can stretch himself that much and still go strong (check with the Joss first), then this is news worthy of the X-Men team on Supes. Just make sure I still get my story told. Oh, and I am the decendent of Rambaldi.

"Alias" and the "Lost" pilot show how well J.J. Abrams can direct ACTORS while also creating cool action set pieces. I think this is a great choice, and hope to see it go forward. "Alias" is in good hands with Jeffrey Bell and Drew Goddard (yeah, Angel geek here, sorry), let J.J. stretch out.

J.J. is a fine director, but his real strength is writing. So unless there's time (and permission) for him to totally rewrite the MI:3 script, I think his time would be better spent crafting a kick-ass season 4 of Alias.

A weak director, never shot a movie before, perfect for Tom Cruise who is a control freak but bad for fans. What visual style will Abrams offer when he has no former template? What action set pieces will he be able to direct efficiently?
He's an interesting choice.

He's dabbled in the spy genre before and he can definitely handle the action. He's got a great cast and a strong screenwriter already attached to project so if he does decide to do it, I'm sure he'll be in good hands. I only hope that he has time to tweak the next season of ALIAS before he goes off to make a feature.

OK, it's crunch time. Everybody's talkin' about the 4th season of "Alias" and how JJ should focus on that. Great. 4th season. OK. I'm outta that loop. I never got into "Alias" for the simple reason that I haven't seen any of it. I will amend this mistake in my viewing habits through the glorious invention of TV-on-DVD box sets. Why? Because I've seen the first 80 some-odd minutes of "Lost" (which, even though I viewed it in one block, I'm led to believe will be presented as the first two episodes). "Lost" for me, was, quite simply, one of, if not *the* best, TV pilot I've ever seen. And being as I've seen some pretty damn fine pilots over the years, I hate to recklessly throw that kind of praise around...but I will, because I was stunned and I viewed it twice and it was better the second time, which is saying something because the first viewing was a knockout on its own. As much as Abrams would bring to MI:3, I implore you to(if, JJ, you're out there reading this) by no means let it conflict with the development of the possible greatness of this series. Money is great, but TV can be forever. I'm out.

we go from BRIAN DE PALMA to JOHN WOO to...who, exactly? oh, the guy who does ALIAS. i really hope this is not true. i could be wrong and JJ might bring to the screen something visionary...but the choice just doesn't excite me. each film must have a mark and so they need to grab someone who has that ability. another art film director! a pity PAUL GREENGRASS is on holiday, someone like him would be an inspired choice...

"The irony is that I felt the show was at its best...when SD-6 existed and that's sortta the biggest hint that I will give in that storyline." It's hard to be impressed by how amazing the episode was, scripting-wise, when the results inflict physical pain on the guy who did it... ;)

Despite hating both "Mission Impossible" films, I'm actually encouraged by this tidbit of news. Abrams is a far better director than John Woo, in my opinion, and possibly better than DePalma, though the jury's still out on that question. I watched "Paycheck" for the first time on DVD the other day, and I was floored by how embarrasingly goddawful it turned out to be. Fucking high school geeks with no film or acting experience could've made a better movie. I think John Woo is possibly the worst director ever right now. But, anyway... JJ Abrams is smart, he's hard-edged, and he's good with character development. I have a feeling he wrote that "Superman" script as a long-winded joke, and was then surprised when the studios actually dug it. In short, I trust his judgment. But in all honesty, I'd rather he focus on "Alias" and "Lost" than the stupid "Mission: Impossible" franchise. I'm also glad Joe Carnahan walked away from it.

his comments on Big Fish being a bad movie/belongs in hell are just plain ridiculous. Big Fish is one of the examples of fine film-making. don't get it twisted. and anyone who knows anything about good movies knows what i mean. Minty, u've also said some dumbass shit somewhere else. i just can't remember what it was. all i remember was thinking: wow...this guy is a true retard. oh yeah... it was about "Hero" and "Fist of Legend". and u said that Jet Li was a waste of space. u, my friend, are a waste of existence if u can't see the artistic brilliance that was Hero. and Fist of Legend is a classic. everyone knows this. so if u're trying to get attention, it certainly worked. feel proud for yourself like u got a medal in the special olympics. the only reason we're cheerin is because u are such a retard.

by Gislef_crow

...but who wants that in a Mission: Impossible flick? Cruise has pretty much got his character sewn up, with as little personality as Ethan Hunt has (a slightly more mature Maverick as a spy), and we're talking about movies based on a show that prided itself on _not_ giving the characters personality for most of its run. Did Voight even have any personality as the villain in the first movie? Any motive for turning bad guy? Granted, there's very little resemblence between the movies and the original show(s). But if Abrams is joining the project so he can work with some nifty character development, it seems he's in for a big disappointment.

Hearing he's the current frontrunner. I'd think Greengrass' agents wouldn't recommend he do a sequel immediately after directing another sequel (especially with so little prep time before the MI:3 start date), but the lure of doing a $135 million Tom Cruise movie is surely strong.
