I mean look at Toy Story. What would you like them to look like? Real? Cartoonish? Clay-like?

Gimme a break...What do you expect, photorealism? We have already seen that fail (i.e. Joe's Apartment). ANTZ will by far be a better movie than a bug's life. Not that I would like to see Disney fail (hahaha) but it is refreshing to see SKG coming out with this caliber of work (especially after seeing The PACEmaker). Prince of Egypt will blow away Mulan and anything else that Disney has put out this year. I also believe that ANTZ will be darker and less "Disneyfied" than a bug's life.
Antz looks good but......

Ive seen the previews to Antz and A Bugs Life and I have to say that A Bugs life looks alot better. Antz looks too Cgi the movements too uh...computery. And I wasnt too thrilled with the Moutian Dew Product placement.Whereas A Bugs Life the movement seem more fluid and more 3d like and the jokes seemed to have more punch.I know there was a time where I would drooled over a movie like Antz... I guess im getting too jaded with CGI now..There was a time where I would drool over just a nugget of computer animation but its everywhere now. But dont listen to me..I know ill pay my dough to see both of them. But I was more impressed with a Bugs Life preview. Anymore of you film geeks feel the same way?
Antz Style

I gotta say it to someone: As an animator and an artist, I think the characters they have designed for Antz, are amongst the ugliest, blandest, worst designed things I have ever seen. Admittedly I have not seen them in motion, and that may change my opinion, but as far as the stills are concerned, I think they are way ugly.

They also seem to bear an odd resemblance to ET, particularly in the scene (in ET) when he smiles at Elliot.

These are ANTZ... of course they're ugly! When was the last time you saw a pretty ant? They could have either gone for "cute" (i.e. DISNEY-style), or they could have gone for "realistic." They chose the latter and I'm glad. I wish they had made them even more realistic, but I suppose they need bigger faces so we can see the emotions...

I just saw an extended preview of this movie and it looks awesome! Yes, I will admit that the ants' faces are kind of scary-looking, but the computer animation left me with my jaw hanging. I have seen the Bug's Life preview also. This one also looks great. Excuse me, but I love animation. I am just thrilled that the United States continues to put this kind of quality out there and not let us have to resort only to japanese animation all the time! (which I happen to love also) I will definitely dole out my hard earned money to go see both!!

I agree with the people posting here that the CG in AntZ just doesn't quite look right. As an animator I find the textures very bland (dark and muddy), the sets boring and the characters very stiff. And the previews I've seen are really lacking. They certainly seem to be missing the heart and life that Pixar's stuff has. I have no doubt that Bugs Life will be the better film. Of course I'll see both, and reserve final judgement until then. But those are my initial impressions.

it seems alot of you guys are judging CG pics on the quality of the CG :P Frankly I dont care how ugly or pretty the characters are, the main character could be a Hybrid mutant mix of a sloth and a vulture for all I care, as long as its a good character, which we'll all have to wait and see

What's with you people? I think you need to take another look at those pics. They're pretty durned cool. They don't look very bland to me, unless you mean the ants look alike, but then, they're ants! They're dark, but this is more of a grown-up cartoon than we've seen come from Disney. I don't know exactly what the story is, so I can't say if it's going to be good. And I can't say whether the characters will be good. But I do know that A Bug's Life is just a Disnified, watered-down version of The Seven Samurai and the Magnificent Seven. Meaning it's probably going to be good, but I can just rent one of the other two versions and get a better movie. Another person said the jokes in A Bug's Life are funnier than in AntZ. Well, ABL is supposed to be a fairly funny show, from what I've seen of AntZ, it's more of a drama, less of a kids show. Well, I think if I have to choose between the two, I'll take AntZ and wait for ABL on video.

I can't believe this the main headline when some guy sent you the exact same images that were just released a few days ago on the official Antz site. Then he tagged his site's url on them.

First off, everyone mellow out. Secondly, there seem to be two main issues: 1. Will Antz be a good movie? 2. Will it be better than Bug's life? Answer to number one... Yes, sounds like a great story and cool voices. Answer to two... You have to choose between happy meal looking bugs and poorly textured antz... hmmm I say Antz takes the race because of the better backgrounds and cool looking props. Not to mention that Antz is gonna have a different story than the usual and overdone Disney gooey happy crap. Kudos to SKG for trying something different (just like Prince of Egypt)!!
Antz vs. ABL

I would just like to say that while both movies look highly promising, I'm rooting for A Bug's Life....PIXAR are gods. Toy Story is the most brilliant piece of storytelling I've seen this decade. Their character animatiion is topp noch. So yes, I'm assuming ABL will be the better of the two. Yes, the characters look a bit cutesy, but consider Toy Story--those characters were cutesy too, but the way they acted made them likable rather than gratiing. I mean...Bugs has a Ladybug with serious gender identity issues, voiced by Denis Leary. Doesn't sound overly cutesy to me. As for the people who want to see "darker" animation, just wait till PIXAR is able to prise itself out from Disney's grasp. I bet they'll really cut loose.

I agree...they look...uhm.....strange some how. I mean, they look great, and I am years away from doing anything similar, but I had higher hopes for it. For me its more the style I think. They look like a cheap Disney rip off, like so many other cartoons. I dont see a defined original style to it. Like Disney has, like Hana barbara (spell check), like Ren and stimpy. Well, thats is what I think, lets hope the actual movie wil make me think difrent... Thomas
Antz v. mediocrity

Both antz and abl look terrific and I'll rush to see them both. But for all of you naysayers who are afraid of the new and unexplored places films like antz take people like me to I say, thank you. Thanks for settling for the mediocre and sometimes partly fullfilling fluff that you have accepted and falsely led you to believe that all eye goo is good goo. Here's to antz from all of us film fanatics that wish to see some eye goo with brains and a plot worth sitting through. But then again, who am i to say, i liked The Stupids.

You all should grow up, we're talking about a KIDS movie here, and they have the right to BOTH be absolutely crappy...you think kid movies like (Altman's) POPEYE, LABYRYNTH, SHORT CIRCUIT 2, FOLLOW THAT BIRD, etc. were well made movies? maybe we thought the world of them when we were kids, but watching them again when we know better is like realizing there isn't a tooth fairy: a substantial letdown. what do kids know about quality cinema? PAULIE was a HIT for chrissakes!! the reason disney films are so popular is because they are aimed for CHILDREN audiences (don't believe that "family entertainment" tag, its a crock. adult animation IS due for a comeback (when was there last a great Watership Down or Heavy Metal-style movie?), but they clearly aren't in the form of the upcoming insect opuses. i'm positive they'll both suck and i'd rather eat my own vomit than pay $8.50 for either one of them.

Antz is not a "kids film" as you call it, "nocky jiker," it is rumored it will get a pg-13 for violence(rumored ont his very site several times). Dreamworks itself has stated this is not a "kids movie." As for your obvious disdain for kids movies---- Why? Toy Story was obviously aimed at kids but I don't know anyone, child or adult(like myself) who doesn't like it. And for goodness' sakes don't insult Labryinth, which is a fascinating movie. vj
Kids movie... NO

As reported here and in the media there are no Dreamworks animations in production now aimed at kids. Hell, Prince o' Egypt probably will be PG-13 and not kids material. Antz is a comedy, but not slapstick stupid kids crap...just clean fun. THAT is the difference and THAT is the real interesting part to this Antz/Bug'sLife feud - will people see and thus validate a happy lookin' disney peice of fluff simply because they are Disney (a recognizable name and thus no thought for the parents). Or will more adults see Antz to say Hey..let's pull this new form of animation in another direction?

The best thing about CG films? No rotoscoping! Yeah, you heard me Disney, I'm onto you. I don't sit at a pencil test machine for hours a day to be outdone by tracers. Oh ya, the topic at hand.. I kinda like the Antz designs; sort of art deco as opposed to cartoony, which is why so many people are upset, I think. It ain't cute, brute, or screwball, but that doesn't mean it isn't well put together. The segmented look of the ants is nicer than ABL's putty looking character designs in my opinion. Looks like Pixar just put some "smooth and highlight" on a basic "cute character" wireframe. Nothing new there, but I'll be anxious to see both films in motion.

To be honest, I can't wait for either of these films. Antz has a certain richness to it's environments that Toy Story and A Bug's Life don't quite seem to have. While PDI's animation work on Antz is very good, the posing and animation can't touch the work that Pixar does with their characters. Pixar's proven that they KNOW how to tell a story (if you've only seen Toy Story go pick up the Tiny Toy Stories video of Pixar shorts, I PROMISE you won't be dissapointed). I'm gonna be in line opening night for both of em, I just hope the market is big enough to support them and open up the market for more CG films. To Nocky Jiker, man, if you can't appreciate animation cause you're not a kid I feel sorry for you. You apparently haven't watched anything like Toy Story before either, because while it was a "children's" film, my buddies and I were laughing more than everybody else in the theater at all the Star Wars jokes and other subtle, intelligent humor. Antz isn't even being aimed at kids, it's written by Woody Allen for pete's sake. Hold off on your vomit and check 'em out, you might be pleasantly surprised. And to Usiel, dude, Disney hasn't rotoed anything since Snow White as far as I know. Anastasia was a different story, but that's not Disney. You've got a good point tho, I knows guys that were saying, wow, look at these Antz images before they had seen anything move. Sure it may look pretty just sitting there, but the key word here is animation...

I was watching the old B&W version of the Outer Limits late one nite last week....and it was about a race of ant like aliens who were dumped on earth and we had to wipe them out. and y'know, when I saw the Antz images I saw a very very strong similarity...('course the aliens had thick eyebrows and evil eyes which reminded me of Bob Dole but that's not the point....scary, but not the point). For the life of me I cannot remember what the Aliens were called but I am sure there are Filmphiles who can remember what I am talking about. I found it a bit spooky but then again if you wanna have human faces on insects I can imagine there are only so many ways to do it. Apparanty with ants there is only one. anyone gotta comment?
