I called Mickey Rourke as Marv! Some nice casting that, if you've seen Animal Factory, you know Mickey's beaten up enough looking these days to play Marv. Anyway, this is actually shaping up nicely. I hope Bruce Willis signs up, that would be cool. However, still nowhere near as good a cast as Batman Begins yet. Those last couple had better be stellar choices. I'm talking Bruce Campbell cool here.

i am a huge fan of Sin City; i own all the collected editions and have read them each multiple times. Frank's an incredible storyteller and his cinematic art style is awesome. i have wanted to see this movie made for a long time, and i think that Rob Rodriguez is the perfect director to do it. and with miller actively involved, all the better. i don't think they'll go wrong with the story, but the casting is crucial. this is just my personal opinion, and many will disagree, but i thought the first spiderman film sucked, however Tobey Maguire was Peter Parker. period. Chris Reeves is Superman/Clark Kent. they naturally fit the parts. Ben Affleck as Matt Murdock-- uh, no. [plus the movie strayed from miller's excellent original working of the story, in my opinion that contributed to much of DD sucking.] i think Christian Bale looks promising as Bruce Wayne/Batman, however i didn't agree with any of the choices for the previous actors to wear the cape and cowl. now for Sin City casting... Josh Hartnett? Frodo? Leo DiCaprio? WTF?! Please don't let it be true. Mickey Rourke will be a fine Marv. [arnold would be my first choice, but he's busy] i actually thought of Bruce Willis as soon as i heard the film was gonna be made, but he fits the part of Dwight [have you seen Last Man Standing?] not Hartigan. Hartigan can only be played by Clint Eastwood. However, i'd be willing to accept Harvey Keitel. Steve Buscemi for the Yellow Bastard. I don't have any real strong opinions about who they pick for the female leads, but think Chiaki Kuriyama would make an excellent Miho. And please, please, please don't let Johnny Depp into this picture. Yes, he's a fine actor, but that doesn't mean he should be in every new movie that's being made. Plus i'm just sick of him, he's becoming way overrated. what do you guys think? -[ikn]

How could anyone look at Gyllenhaal and think "Green Hornet"? I look at him and think "Poor man's Tobey McGuire". He's who they get to play Peter Parker when Tobey doesn't want to do it anymore and that's about it. Brit Reid should be played by someone like Tom Cruise ... who Kevin Smith reverenced as a GOD when he did wrote that interview with Cruise. Does Smith think that he can't get someone like Cruise to be in his movies? Gyllenhaal as Brit Reid is a left field choice.

Sorry, but that is bullshit. The Green Hornet is not some punk kid, he is the owner of a newspaper, ie, a full-grown adult. Gyllenhall has not proven himself as much of anything yet (he was good in the fascinatingly strange DONNIE DARKO, but that is about it so far). He is not of the appropriate age to play a character that owns a newspaper in a major metropolis. The Green Hornet should be over 30, plain and simple. He is not a college kid fresh out of high school, like Peter Parker (whom Gyllenhall MIGHT be able to pass as, if and when Tobey MacGuire passes on continual Spiderman sequels- which would be a bad career move at this stage, but that is besides the point). Why is Kevin Smith allowing Gyllenhall to play this character? The casting is bad, in my opinion. Oh, well.

I understand that this is a Sin City Talkback, but I just found out about this Jake Gyllenhall nonsense, so please excuse me. I know that the Green Hornet is a relatively obscure property, especially when compared to the more current and trendy Frank Miller property- Sin City. Sin City is cool, but there is no current Green Hornet Talkback, so excuse me if I vent about Green Hornet here. My feeling about the obscurity of Green Hornet is this: obscure properties that few people care about are ripe for cool interpretations precisely because there are few expectations for them. As a writer, I am always interested in characters and stories that are not at the dead center of the radar, but are rather a bit off the beaten path (to mix metaphors). Look at how Alan Moore took a character from the literal backwaters of comic books, the Sawmp Thing, and reinvented him and did something extraordinary with that character and property. My point is that there are really not that many bad characters, merely uninventive writers. I see obscure properties such as the Green Hornet as opportunities for creative people to do something inventive and unexpected and cool. Anyway, that is what I was hoping for with GH, but this casting news soured that idea. Oh, well.

black and white with flashes of colour as others have said. would kill it's box office appeal though. and that nine minute feature would be good to get a look at, wouldn't it? But is mickey R. big enough to play marv? and i thought this movie wasn't about marv. that he was only a minor character in the film. i haven't read the comics in a while, so i'm gonna pull em out again and update myself. don't really want to see di caprio in there, BUT the fact that a director with passion and commonsense is working with the original writer at least assures us that they'll give it a good go. with this and hellboy getting good reviews and even A v P being spoken about as not being total shit (i'm still not convinced though cause we have the most visionless director in hollywood directing a fan boy dream...again!) Dark horse might be on to something.

No, it's cool, I didn't take what you were writing as an insult at all. Just speaking my peace/musing about Green Hornet and the idea of reinventing obscure properties. Sin City is of course very cool and worth discussing.*** To the poster who likes Jake Gyllenhall's acting: I'm not especially in agreement. He seems like a goofy, likeable kid to me. Nothing wrong with him in particular. I might have used some strong terms like "punk kid" to describe him, but I was only trying to be colorful; I wasonly half serious. My real point is not that Gyllenhall is a bad actor; he's OK (I thought he was god in the GOOD GIRL, where he was WELL CAST). The actual point for me is not that Gyllenhall is a bad actor; he isn't. The point is that he is miscast as the Green Hornet. Just my opinion. The character of the Green Hornet is essentially not a kid or even a young man, but a character who is a major professional figure (a newspaper owner) in a large city. It seems kind of silly to me to envision Jake Gyllenhall as a newspaper owner; he is too young. The Green Hornet is not a kid/young man, like Peter Parker. Anyway, I'm kind of tired of Hollywood always going to actors in their twenties for action heroes. I think action heroes have more weight as characters when they are mature adults (read: 30 years and older). I don't buy shallow seeming kids as tough guys so much. Your top action heroes are guys like Russell Crowe, not flavor of the month type kids.Maybe when Gyllenhall gets a bit older I will buy him in such roles; right now, I don't. Anyway, I think that it is silly to cast someone so young as the Green Hornet. Just my opinion. **As far as Sin City goes, I am not a rabid fan of it, but it seems to me that Mickey Rourke is too physically slight to play Marv. Anyway, I am a big Frank Miller fan, even though Sin City is not my favorite work from him. Even so, I would look forward to ANY of his work being turned into film. I would especially like to see something like RONIN done on film (did it seem like it to anyone else, but doesn't that animated show SAMURAI JACK seem like a cartoon ripoff of RONIN?). RONIN would make a great Science Fiction pic, in my opinion (maybe directed by someone like Ridley Scott?).***Speaking of Science-Fiction, I have high hopes for I, ROBOT. Asimov is long overdue to get some of his major works adapted to film (how tough would a FOUNDATION film be to make?). Too bad the old SF Master is no longer around. Anyway, I am a big fan of Alex Proyas. He is a really cool genre director. Wish he would make films more quickly, though. Well, sorry to get off-topic again. I have been a frank Miller fan going on 15 years now, I still have the copy of DHP with Marv strapped in the chair on the cover hanging on my wall. And let me say this HE HATES HOLLYWOOD!! Ever since the raping he took on RoboCop. I like to think that the whole Batman script he was supposedly working on with Darren Aronofsky was just an attempt to put the screws to Hollywood. I mean come on a jive talking Alfred? Anyways for a man with this much contempt for the industry to hand over his baby must have complete faith in RR and we should too.

And personally I'm glad I was right. Yeah, Perlman could have pulled it off too, but I think many people will be surprised at just how good Rourke will turn out to be in this role. As I said I'm willing to give him a shot, but I'm far from convinced right now. Personally if they couldn't get Clint I think they should have gone after Harvey Keitel for the part. ************************** ************************** ****** The rest of the casting, and rumoured casting so far is interesting, and while I'm not sold on any of the actor/role combos, I'm not put off by any so far either, so the potential is still high. But if Hartnett is indeed to play Dwight, as rumoured, then I wonder what part DiCaprio is up for. I love all of Miller's Sin City work, and I just can't think of him for a single role offhand. Personally I also would have cast Jennifer Tilly as Shellie, but that's just me. ************************** ************************** ******** As for potential, as far as we know still uncast, roles, here's my faves: John Cusack as Kevin, who would be so perfect for that role. Depp could do it, no doubt, but Cusack is who I always saw in my minds eye. Willem Dafoe as Junior Roarke/Yellow Bastard (think an even more twisted Max Schrek). Gina Gershon as Gail (the fishnet queen of the hookers), Denise Crosby as Lucille (Marv's parole officer) and Rebecca Romaijn-Stamos as Delia/Blue Eyes. I have no idea who Miho or Nancy should be offhand though. ************************** ************************** ****** As for Rodriguez himself, in all honesty he's the one that worries me the most with this project actually. Don't get me wrong, I like that he's a fan and he gets major props for bringing Frank Miller in and apparently trying to follow the style and look of the original books, but I just worry if he's not too hyper-kinetic for this type of film, if his directorial style isn't just too fast and frantic and a little sloppy for a film like this, least judging by past films anyways, and whether he can actually do something different than that. I mean I'd love to see him knock it out of the park with this one, but until I see some footage I'm going to be a little nervous as to just how well (or not) his directorial style will mesh with the style of the books themselves, which as I've mentioned before are amongst my all time favourite books ever in the comics medum.
