Merry X-mas!

(one day early) Just wanted to thank all you @$$holes for another year of fun reviews and suggestions as to new titles to try -- some suggestions I've followed, and loved (Sleeper, for sure), others I haven't been so hot on, (having issues with a lot of the indy labels still), but it's been fun attempting to broaden my horizons. Oh, and one mean-spirited comment to keep this talkback from being removed for excessive happiness... "The stuff with Rogue is especially good, using the concepts of heavenly and demonic beings with a level of metaphor and sophistication that would make Chuck Austen

I liked it a lot :) Nice bullet dodging Cormorant, by avoiding Firefly/Fray TPB comparisons. 'Last couple of months' would have sunk you :D I loved the original Tales Of The Slayer TPB and the one-shot that followed was pretty good too. I'm enjoying Tales Of The Vampires (Which is an ongoing BTW) but what I really want from Joss is more Fray. She's one of his best creations in any medium.

Well no not really..Sorry to insult you like that non Gotham central reader. I just wanted to SHAME you into buying this book. Its one of the best monthly books published out there by any comic book company.. ( now now dont get in a tizzy i said " One of". There are many great books out there! Like Waids " Fantastic Four" fer instance) I think is sufer the stigma of being a batbook without the costumes witch might turn some people off..But still the writing is fantstic and the art is better than we deserve..The Last Ish was great! wow..
Merry Christmas everybody!

What About 1602?

I haven't read anything about it. Is everyone so disappointed that they've chosen to forget it, does Marvel have a restraining order, or what?

. . . just not great. I'm buying it for the predicted payoff, assuming it ever comes. Gaiman is running out of time to deliver something special with it . . . . On the other hand, one book that is really getting shortchanged by our beloved @$$holes is NYX. The book is turning into a new take on the New Mutants concept, and not the rehashed take currently found in the book entitled "New Mutants" . . . . I haven't picked up Ultimate X-Men in awhile, maybe I'll check it out again. I hear Vaughn is going to be writing some issues.

As for Ultimate X-Men 40, it was a great issue, but hardly the best in a decade. Uncanny was actually decent this month.

You mean there is hope? I've just about freaking given up on X-books entirely which is very, very sad. I didn't think I'd ever see the day when most of the comics I took home were DC and independant seeing as I started with X-men and Spidey. I'll give Ultimate X-men a try because I can't stand Morrison, the rewriting of Nightcrawler's origin made me ill and ... why am I still buying X-treme? I can't remember anymore.

This sucks so far. Whedon's stories were alright, but were way too short. I only hope that he continues to expand upon the first story. As for the Spike/Drusilla story...been there done that a thousand times over. How many times do we have to read the same love story over and over again. And Whedon ruined this eternal love when Drusilla left and Spike fell for Buffy(actually this is only one of many things that were ruined by these events, but I won't go into that). Telling the story now after what we know is going to happen just doesn't have the same effect. I'm a huge fan of Whedon's writing so I hope he continues in comics, but so far this series sucks.

I gather that Singer's keen on eventually introducing Angel into the mix, and the fact that there might be religious groups out there who are fiercely protective of this "angel on earth" is an important nuance. I also like the idea of Rogue reflecting on having a demon and an angel -- both of them with the same convictions -- in the same household.

Finally a comic book that remembers that super heroes can be fun and exciting. Read on as twenty super heroes audition to be a part of the five hero group known as Wild Guard. From the mind of Todd Nauck... Check it out. It's put out by Image Comics.

I never liked the differences in their personalities from the mainstream universe, but when Wolverine got invited back on the team after he tried to murder Cyclops, that took the cake. There's been an active campaign in this series to make all of the characters substantially dumber than their mainstream counter-parts. Yeah, the Nightcrawler origin story in Uncanny was dumb, but the book's getting better with this month's all-Juggernaut issue.

At first I ignored the whole ULTIMATE thing. It reminded me of that lousy New Universe bit Marvel pulled on us in the 90's. Then I read a few. Then I read a lot. These books were actually good. X-MEN is a perfect example. It retains the spirit of the original without all the bothersome bagage. It was good from the start. The only arc I skipped was the two Gambit issues(I fucking hate Gambit!). The Ultimates is well worth my time and money too. I can't wait for the final issue. Hulk is going kick the living shit out of that alien scum.

I like 1602. A lot. Relocating Marvel's NYC into the British Empire with the Inquisition going on, is brilliant... Thank God Gaiman's at Marvel because he's not only brilliant, but he's a nice Jewish boy.
New X-Men

I've only read a couple issues of ultimate that didn't impress me much, but perhaps after this review I'll try to jump on again. That said, I think New X-Men is the best X-Men has been in a long time. I gave up reading X-books a few years ago, but a borrowed issue of New X-Men pulled me back in. Far from a "mess," Grant Morrison's take keeps impressing me and I'll be sorry to see it go. I was impressed with the Tales of the Slayers trade. The regular Buffy books didn't really offer much, but that book was excellent. On the strength of that, I'll probably pick up that new book.
Thanks for the kind words, you lot! (and what the hell - thanks

Various quick responses so I can hurry up and get back to my X-Mas loot: TO JUDGE MENTAL: Don't you think it's stretching the definition of "brilliant" to apply it to an "Elseworlds" style story as convetional as 1602? I'm enjoying it, mind, but it's definitely a middelbrow lark - nothing truly ingenius at work. Tell you this, though - Gaiman's 1602 take on the X-Men feels more like the X-Men of my youth (Claremont's bold outlaw adventurers of the late 70's/early 80's) than any other X-Men incarnations in the last, oh, fifteen years or so. Maybe twenty. ****** TO RICKSLAMU2: I gave up on ULTIMATE X-MEN and the whole "Ultimate Universe" a good ways back, but I happened to have read the issue Vroom reviewed - it really is pretty damn good. Makes me wish Bendis was writing this story for the real X-Men, even as Chuck Austen stood in an unemployment line. ******* TO XANDR37: Good point about why the Spike/Dru story fell flat in TALES. I couldn't quite put my finger on what was wrong with it beyond being pedestrian, but you're right - the fact that the Spike/Dru romance ultimately was for naught makes a lovey-dovey story starring the pair pretty meaningless. ******* TO VOICE O. REASON: Yeah, ULTIMATE X-MEN stretches credibility to some pretty damn stupid levels in its efforts to be edgy, but my god man, don't kill your case by championing UNCANNY over it! Austen needs to be driven from the industry for *any number* of atrocities, but having Juggernaut go goody-goody and, in the latest issue, having him nail Marvel's coolest chick character, She-Hulk, is just beyond the pale. Hmm, and considering that ALIAS revealed Luke Cage had nailed She-Hulk too, ya figure she's on her way to becoming the slut of the Marvel U.? I smell a MAX title. ****** TO STLFILMWIRE: Yes, WILDGUARD is a really fun title! Great stuff for folks who just plain love the fun of superheroes, and a rare case of a gimmick premise that works. I reviewed the first issue a few months back: http://www.aintitcool.com/disp lay.cgi?id=16155 ******* TO THINGSTHATTIMDOG: AVENGERS/JLA still has one more issue to go, and it's running a little late because Perez actually *injured* his hand drawing the cover to issue #3 (the one with every Avengers and JLA member ever - yes, even Vibe). From this reader's point of view, the third issue was kind of lacking, so my formerly considerable enthusiasm's a bit dimmed. Still, hats off to Perez for actually causing physical damage to himself in order to make this project happen. Bryan Hitch, kneel at his feet you no-account bum. ****** TO XSI KAL: Just the fact that you've got the cajones to try some new stuff on occasion makes you fucking cool by me. Glad to have you with us. ******* TO ELLIOT KANE: Kane! What up? And what's your take on the ongoing CrossGen implosion? You know I've never been their biggest fan, but I'm really disappointed to see the options they offered being wiped from the board. ******* TO TALLSCOTT: No need to apologize for calling non-GOTHAM CENTRAL readers "fucking dumbasses." Your heart has steered you to an accurate conclusion. ****** TO HULKDOG: Yeah, we dropped the ball on NYX. Blame our reviewer, the Comedian. He was supposed to review the first issue but wussed out on us at the last minute. Bet it had something to do with a woman, so he gets a pass, but we'll try and get some coverage in soon. ******* TO JOHNNYSUNSHINE: I'm wit'cha on NEW X-MEN these days, but are you bummed out like I am that Silvestri is drawing the final arc? I've liked every previous artist during Morrison's run, nearly all of them showcasing appropriately progressive styles, but Silvestri is strictly 90's crap. Wotta pisser. ******* TO EVERYONE: The first printing of Millar's WANTED sold out instantly and has become this month's buzz book. As per my review, I consider it a guilty pleasure at best - so what about you guys? Surely some of you out there read it, right? We need reports from the front!

I would have to describe the CrossGen implosion as deeply painful, honestly. A lot of very, very good titles are vanishing including many of my personal favourites and the only title on the market that seems to be aimed specifically at female readers (Meridian, of course). I'm saving a lot of money, I admit, but it's money I'd rather not be saving for the most part. As you know, I've been getting their titles right from the start, and I really enjoy their style of storytelling. I just hope they can pull through their current problems.

This quote, from X-Axis, is probably the best summation of Austen's run on Uncanny I have ever seen: "The nice thing about having more than one title for the X-Men is that readers are offered an alternative. For example, on New X-Men, Grant Morrison writes intelligent, entertaining stories that have reinvigorated the characters. And on Uncanny X-Men, Chuck Austen offers an alternative." Nuff said, I think :)

Readable, but not great. Only the central character so far comes across as more than two-dimensional. An intriguing concept, and I shall probably read the next issue, but overall not as great as the hype would have you believe.

First, JLA: Referring to last time's A$$HOLE reviews, the "Transconciousness Brain-O-Tron" is MOST OBVIOUSLY going to be Joe Kelly's upcoming villian du-jour that will kill his super-hero du-jour, Faith. - - Second, H.E.R.O. #12: I'm sort of both happy and disappointed that there were no masturbating primates.
