Mori said it pretty well in his afterword to the post. Hollywood needs to stop taking a few ideas from one of his stories and turning it into a dumbed down, silly, macho action flick. PKD's stories are intelligent, philosophical and challenging. They are not about surface values. So far the only film that kind of got it right was BLADE RUNNER, even though the film strays widely from the original novel DO ANDROIDS DREEM OF ELECTRONIC SHEEP.

...before I even knew it would be a movie. I heard about the pending flick, and I started smelling a rat. The story is too short, the items too few (7 in the story), and the future device idea too flaky, to allow for a full length movie. Maybe a 45-minute Twilight Zone or Amazing Stories short.

It had a lot in commen with othur reveiws on this sight in that the reviewer haz the riting skills of a sixteen year stonur. I read the script for Paycheque a long time ago and from what I'm reading here, there wasn't much in the way of rewrites on this lemon. I think films based on Dick's writing are definitely hit and miss. But isn't that the case with all writers?

I dunno about this review... I'm a diehard PKD fan, but honestly the only two adaptations that have given him justice were Blade Runner and Minority Report, and those were highly modified. The Time Viewer in the original Paycheck short story wasn't a viewer... I was a claw that reached forward in time and actually took those items. Knock on PKD all you want, but all the Non-Space Sci-Fi, and even some of the Space Sci-Fi has been coming from him for years. I liked the new Battlestar Galactica better when it was called "Second Variety" by PKD. I mean Jeezus the final scene was exactly the same!

It's kind of like the a NBA All Star game. There's no chemistry so there might be a good shot, rebound, dunk, or block here and there but on the whole it clunky and it sucks. Then, some minor star player gets the All Star MVP (Giamatti in the case of this film). Chemistry counts more than big names but Hollywood remembers that even Batman and Robin made tons of money. So we'll continue to see more Schwarzeneggar as Mr. Freeze style miscasts so long people are foolish enough to herd into the cineplex. People just suck....

... and he really needs to go back to what he knows. For a guy who loves nice dialogue as much as I "think" he does, why on earth does he continue to accept roles that demand he utter crap? I just don't get it. I think he is much better than the roles he chooses, and I have to think it's because he wants to get to a certain place within the Hollywood empire, but he's so losing respect in the process. I go back to Jude Law, who I just adore right, and he's not famous really. I mean, we all know him, but he's not a superstar, but he has become known through his work, his excellent work. For the roles he chooses and the films he's in. He doesn't do small films, but he doesn't mind taking the small, good part. I wish Ben would do this. I think of him in "Shakespeare in Love" and I know that he's a leading man now, and probably can't ever go back to being in smaller films, but better smaller, quality films than no films, or rather, no films anyone wants to see. I hate that he gets laughed at, but I join in sometimes too because the choices he makes, they're funny, in that they're so obviously wrong! And John Woo? Blech!!

It's been a disastrous year for the oxymoron Paramount company. What's-her-face has a reputation for playing it safe and adhering to formula at all costs, and this year it seems to have backfired. INDY 4 can't arrive soon enough as far as the check-signing honchos are conerned...

Ben Affleck is not a leading man. He's pretty decent in supporting roles, especially in smaller, more independent films. But he can't hold a picture together on his own. He doesn't have the acting chops, the personality, or the charisma to do it. I really, really don't mean this to be negative... It's just that some people can truly sell a movie and some people can't. It shouldn't reflect on him as a person. I'm sure he's a great guy. He's just not the superstar everyone wants to believe he is. I'm sure the guy can, and will, have a really successful career as an actor. But the sooner he and his film producer friends realize this, the better. Heck, too, the guy can co-star. Take a step back, do another film with Matt D. Get away from these big budget Hollywood popcorn films. People will start taking you seriously again.

I'm a big fan of PKD, but his short stories are a bit hit and miss. I read 'Paycheck' recently from a book of short stories and some of them are a bit ...well...poor... blame it on the drugs and dogfood eh. Paycheck is a good story, but even from the trailer it's fairly obvious that Hollywood has made considerable changes hoping for more mass appeal. Unfortunately bravery rarely exists anymore, I think someone should do 'The Variable Man' by Dick (a good story) and do a 'Memento' stylie job on it.

The motherfucker actually blames their relationship for the bad press and box office surronding his movies. No, Ben, you have no fucking talent and if it wasn't for your relationship with the more talented Matt Damon and the over-hyped and over-rated writer/director Kevin Smith, your career would be dead in the fucking water. I would rather watch paint dry then see another promising film ruined by this no talented fucker. How you like dem apples, Ben. (And I refuse to say Bennifer becasue the sooner J-Lo realizes that she belongs back with Puffy the better her career would be because staying with this no-talented hack will end her 15 minutes of fame real quick)

Paramount article in L.A. Times
by TheYoungLion
Dec 11th, 2003

"Paycheck" sounds like it's more of the same for Paramount Pictures. There was a really great article in Monday's (December 8th) Los Angeles Times about Paramount and how it has become a pathetic shadow of its former self. It chronicles what happens when these big corporate conglomerates that own the studios put the bottom line above making quality films; and what happens when that philosophy permeates the entire filmmaking process. The interesting thing is that Paramount Pictures head Sherry Lansing is one of the few studio chiefs who actually has experience producing films. Unfortunately, she has bosses who care only about profit and increasing shareholder value -- which is how Paramount goes into projects these days. The article cited how some filmmakers -- including some who owe their careers to Paramount -- are eager to set their projects up at any other studio because they have lost confidence in Paramount's ability to make and market movies anymore. Ouch! Lansing even recently made the rounds to the top agencies in town -- studio bosses almost never "lower" themselves to setting foot in an agency -- in an attempt to convince the agents that Paramount is changing its ways. Anyway, it was a really interesting article. I recommend going to the website and reading it.

Just because you put flocks of slow motion pigeons flying in front of the camera doesn't make your film poetic, pretty, artistic or whatever. And as for Ben Assfuck....the only acceptable role he's ever done is in Kevin Smith's films. Hope he gets skewered on a blunt and feces-smeared punji stick.

A bunch of trees explode, and the movie just doesn't get out of your face. You need the big screen and surround sound for that. I was almost checking over my shoulder for helicopters. i`ve been a big woo fan for a long time, before he came to HoLLyWooD, but his career just keeps going down. I thought face off was a great cheesy HK action flick dressed up with Hwood technical brilliance. Nic Cage was especially enjoyable in his delivery and impersonation of travolta. very enjoyable if you take it for the cheese-fest it is. Woo`s HK flix were also cheesy IMO. BUT for anyone to say windtalkers is good is really...well...windtalking! talking out their arse! i have walked out on less than 5 movies at the cinema in my life. This was one of them. bad company was another. chris rock doing his ``don:t you touch me, I:m a black man`` routine for 3hours. and the other one is Carry on Columbus. Julian clary was great on tv and I love double entendres (sp?) but this was more painful than getting taken behind the tool shed by big Jeremy from cell block C. the most recent flick i almost walked out on was Charlies angles full throttle...i deserved it for even going.

Why? Because, Affleck and Woo suck, and because Dick is near impossible to adapt faithfully. Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise couldn't make a good Dick adaptation. And BLADE RUNNER and TOTALL RECALL both work, not because they're good adaptations, but because the writers and directors had strong visions of their own. The only filmmaker who has any business adapting the work of Philip K. Dick is Terry Gilliam. 12 MONKEYS and FEAR & LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS are all the proof you need. And, it's a fucking crime that he never got to make A SCANNER DARKLY. Now, we MAY get to see a stupid animated version, a la WAKING LIFE. That's something I am NOT looking forward to....

The arguements over Woo's abilities as a director can be solved simply by making everyone watch all his Hong Kong movies and then all his American movies. I liked Faced/off but have to admit that compared to Hard Boiled or The Killer it just doesn't cut the mustard. Everyone should take a look at his first film with Chow- Yun Fat - A Better Tommorrow - to realise that Woo is an incredible director. I'm blaming the Yank studios for hiring a director for the talent he's shown in his homeland and then not trusting him enough to just allow him to make the kinds of films he's good at. Same goes for Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Chow-Yun Fat. None of these great Movie stars would have made any of the absolute dross they have made in America if they were still back home.

all great hong kong stars get fucked when they come to america. donnie yen is the best example, john woo's a close second, i think. but shit, that's exactly what they've always wanted. hong kong movies are cool because they take almost-non-existant budgets and turn them into kick-ass action films.... but don't go praising them for their artistic vision - all they really want is to make a buck. hong kong is just as bad as hollywood in that way, only they haven't gotten it down to quite as much of a science yet. it's a simple formula: start on the streets of hong kong without anything, become involved in or make a movie to become famous in HK and make money, live an alright life but dream of stardom in america, come to hollywood, do crap but make more money than you've ever dreamed of, fuck lots of women and drive a ferrari. meanwhile movie geeks can enjoy the killers, iron monkeys and drunken masters that you made back when you had to actually work for a living, because god knows they're not enjoying anything you're making now. and you wouldn't have it any other way.

It's possible to do this with films :) I love PKD and don't want to see his work dragged through the gutter. Like you said brilliantly I don't want them to 'mass- produce a cookie cutter bit of chum'. But they are shits and will do this anyway whatever you feel. Money...isn't it what everything's about nowadays :) Take what you want away from a film, read the books interpret the facts. I have read about a dozen of PKD's novels. His novels about topics like paranoia, memory, identity, work best as written works. The thoughts of the characters are more important than the actions. It's a shame the Hollywood bottom line turns these interesting novels into stupid action pictures. I'd prefer to see a more indepentent movie approach. Anyone who has seen D.
