I never was into the old series, but for the nostaglia (sp?) of it all, this movie could be fun. I mean it doesn't seem like they are taking themselves too seriously, and it isn't just some ultra-violent film with drugs, sex, and violence. If anything it could be a good family film for those who originally grew up with the old TV show and thier own children to go see. The actors look like the old characters, the sets and costumes are colorful and all that. I may actually check this one out, with my little brothers that is just so I won't look like a total fool. I do think they could have used a better song for the trailer though, how about DMX's "Party Up"? That worked for 'House of the Dead', didn't it? ~LG

You mean the format whose player reassigns all your filetypes without prompting, after convincing you it'll just add a codec or two so you can view a trailer online? The one that makes you dumpster-dive your hard-disk looking for a file of every media-type to re-assign before the sheer stupidity of a propriety-format video player wanting to hog your jpg's makes your brain explode? That Quicktime? I've defended you many times, Harry - every time so far. But you *must* know better than this... so why? Why pretend Quicktime is anything more than a P.O.S. "it's not entirely owned by Microsoft so even though it sucks people will dig it" corporate-controlled format? On topic, I'm getting less and less excited by the Thunderbirds movie with every announcement. Thank the pantheon for all the other positive news and developments (Marvel movies!) going on...

Somebody hasn't figured out how to compress flash video yet. too bad it's somebody at a major production studio. you'd think they would know how to work a program as simple as flash, or squeeze for that matter. WTF? IT'S SOOOOO EASY. becasuse the data rate is so shitty, and the audio bit rate is so low i don't even know what i just watched. looked like moving jpg corruption and pops and hisses. next time you guys want to do something with flash try reading the manual.

First off, I'm in the camp of those who don't understand why you would make a "Thunderbirds" movie without marionettes. But, since I'm not a diehard fan of that series, it doesn't matter. It doesn't look GOOD, but it didn't look bad. Actually I was pleasantly surprised that it looked so much like the show. I expected a pathetic update. When you update cheese you get fancy looking cheese, or something that doesn't resemble ther original in any way and isn't worth making. With something like this it is only going to work if you go with the original feel, and cheese. Anyway QUICKTIME IS THE BEST. I'm using a Mac, so of course it is the best. I'm sure Windows Media Player works the best on a Windows machine, But I can tell you this. I am 100% sure that QT for Windows isn't a thousandth as bad as WMP for the Mac. It is obvious that Microsoft intentionally designs their stuff to work poorly on Macintosh. What is with that? Do they think I am going to run out and buy a PC just so I can use Microsoft products that actually function well? No it just makes me find more alternates to using Microsoft products, and makes me all the more positive that I will never use a PC (at least exclusively). I'm no Mac snob, use whatever works best for you, but whatever you think about Apple, at least their stuff works well for whoever they make it for. iTunes on PC? My PC using buddys were all salivating over that, and now swear by it. What if Apple intentionally made it so it worked like shit? Wouldn't that be stupid?

Quicktime works fine. Quicktime looks good. Quicktime Player is an offensive piece of software. It's not that Harry said "Quicktime looks good" that bothered me... it's that he morally quantified media formats - in the wrong order. Real (the company), well, they're not above reproach for their player. Nor is Microsoft above reproach. Macromedia, certainly, does not govern its own circle of hell - even if Flash is poorly used and overly liberally applied on the net, it's not Macromedia's fault. Of these, Quicktime has treated me the worst - I just don't like software you supposedly install in good faith that tries to "correct" your viewing habits on its own volition. It's not that big a deal, in itself, but media formats and the content they present are so intertwined by now that this site really is just as valid a forum for vaunting or denouncing a particular company or piece of software as for blasting a movie studio. Harry posted his opinion on this subject, which was just as incisive as mine, so I replied.

...how in at least some theaters, they handed out glossaries to people entering the particular screen so that the uninitiated could comprehend the film? (Although I don't know WHY they'd want to do that) Well, I hear with "Thunderbirds", they're going to have local Fred Durst/Eminem wannabe trailer-trash stand outside the film's screen and ridicule, then whack in the balls with an Easton aluminum bat, any guy over 5 who dares enter the screening. Leave off this film guys! Anyone who knows the original 60's series is probably gonna love this film. It seems to capture the look and feel of the series, even down to the cheesy look of the main characters. Sure, its gonna be camp, its gonna cheesy, its gonna be a film where you can switch your brain off for two hours. So what? Thats what the series was like. As for Bill Paxton, he rocks in whatever he is in just because he is Bill Paxton. Camp or not, this film floats my boat! By the way, just because it looks camp doesn't mean its a "gay" film. Whoa now. Calm down there, chief. I didn't say I was a fan of Berman and Braga. Those goes wouldn't know a good story if it bit them in the ass and told them it was their mother. In fact, the only saving grace with First Contact's story was that there was another party involved. First Contact is generally considered by most in the clubhouse to be among the best of the series, trailing behind only The Wrath of Khan. (Still slightly partial to The Voyage Home myself.) It was highly entertaining and fit the Trek mythos well. Frakes did a pretty decent job directing. Did I like his follow-up, Insurrection? Not really. It just felt like a blah story. Not something really noteworthy to bring to the screen. And the direction seemed lackidaisical at best. Do I have high hopes for Thunderbirds? No. The actual market for this film is small. Not too mention that too many people will probably recall Lost In Space and not go see this. Plus, from what I could make out of the crap Flash presentation, it doesn't look all that fantastic. But don't slag against those of us who happened to like First Contact cause this looks like shit. Oh yeah, have to insert insult here at the end. Uhh, creamy fucknut butter twist. As you're intent on keeping it civil (there's very little of that to be found here, you see), I withdraw the dolt and assclown remarks, but reserve the right to recall them at a future date. The problem is that the Star Trek movie series (after the first two films), as a WHOLE, has been miserable. Miserably underfunded, miserably mismanaged, miserably produced, and I certainly don't think that "First Contact" can be exempted from these claims. If you see it as being "highly entertaining and fit the Trek mythos well", you're certainly entitled to believe that. I, on the other hand, saw yet another mediocre TV movie of the week shot in Panavision. It was a revenge movie with faux passion. It was a literary homage, not from a student of literature, as Nicholas Meyer is, but from a team of TV hacks PLAYING Nicholas Meyer. "First Contact" was certainly not on par with "The Wrath of Khan" by any stretch of the imagination. It, like the woeful "Nemesis", TRIED desperately to isolate the elements of TWOK that made it so successful, reproduced them as best as the amateurish creative talents assembled could allow, threw it all in a blender, knelt at the feet of the focus groups, and the result was a typically bland TNG two-parter, only slightly more derivative than the TV stuff (which, while coma-inducingly boring for the most part, DID, occasionally, attempt to move in a different direction). So, to keep it on topic, actors should act, and directors should direct. Yes, there are rare instances where there is some convergence, but, you know, Frakes ain't Orson Welles. Actually, he's starting to morph into DAVID Wells...

Hey, I'm old enough to remember loving all the Gerry Anderson shows in their first runs -- even the ones that time has not been kind to (SPACE: 1999, anyone?) -- and I marked out *huge* over the current T-birds trailer. Yes, wooden models would have been more charming than CGI. Yes, Blur's "Song 2" is effective but overused. Yes, Frakes is no Robert Altman. But I think they did the right thing in taking the original concept (and craft!) and simply streamlining/modernizing things, rather than a radical rethinking (i.e. just about every other TV-show-to-blockbuster turkey of the last decade). Regardless of how bad it turns out (or is reviewed as such), I'm still putting the damn thing at the top of my '04 Summer Popcorn Flicks to-do list.
