Caine is not the best actor Britian has produced and I'm sorry to all other Brits who read this and have an immense fondness for The Italian Job, Get Carter and so on but... I PERSONALLY dont think Michael Caine is up to much, acting wise... never have and an Oscar wont change my mind about it. Its been a while for any other casting news on this film (apart from Bale who I'm MORE than happy with) but I dont entirely go a bundle on this choice.

This is up at Superherohype.com... MICHAEL CAINE IS ALFRED IN BATMAN!! Source: Variety Tuesday, November 25, 2003 Michael Caine (pictures) has agreed to play the role of Bruce Wayne's trusted butler Alfred in the Warner Bros.' new Batman adaptation for which Christian Bale has been cast in the title role. The film, to be helmed by Christopher Nolan and being written by David Goyer, is expected to start shooting next year for a 2005 release. Meanwhile, Caine is also expected to star in Castle Rock's sequel to the Sandra Bullock romantic comedy "Miss Congeniality."

Those guys are REAL ACTORS (not to mention expensive)... isn't that going a little over the top for a minor character, one who's only supposed to have two lines: "Yes, Mahhstah Brrruce" and "Veddy good, sir"? And "Batman: Intimidation Game" is the stupidest name for a movie, EVER. So much for resuscitating the series. Maybe in about 20 years, when the stink has worn off, someone will do the right thing and start over, from scratch.

Peter O'Toole (who IS very much alive) would be an excellent Alfred. But then again, the man played Lawrence Of Arabia; I suppose a butler is not beyond his grasp. I was really hoping that he would get to replace his good friend Richard Harris as Dumbledore, but in the case of both franchises, there is probably some concern regarding his ability to play the role long-term. It's quite possible that he would not live out through the standard trilogy deal most potential franchises seem to shoot for.

It would be kind of fun, and he deserves some kind of small cameo. He's the right age for Alfred. All he'd need to do would be put on a phoney Brittish accent. I think they'd be smart to sign Burt Reynolds as James Gordon. Look at Reynolds in Boogie Nights. With his grey hair, and mustace he looks like Gordon. All he needs is the trenchcoat and pipe. He'd be perfect for the role.

Crispin Glover would be the most amazing Joker ever. Watching him as the Creepy Thin Man in Charlie's Angels cemented it. I think Liam Neeson would be a good Ra's Al Ghul. Michael Caine seems quite a heavy weight actor for Alfred, but good for them that they got him. Personally, I think someone with a dry acerbic wit like Michael Palin would be good for Alfred (Cleese would be best, but he's side-kicking in too many franchises these days). Kurt Russell or Dennis Quaid would be ideal Gordon's. Anyway, I'd love it if they could cameo Crispin Glover as the Joker in this new Batman film. BUT ... heads up to the powers in charge__ Batman: Intimidation (or Intimidation Game) is a godawful name for a film. A side note, what's up with all these long ass titles in films these days? "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" and "Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl"? Those titles needed a trimming.

How distressing is it that Nolan has followed the parade of filmmakers who made their name doing smart, indie films with distinct visions, then just dropped their pants at the first sign of a Hollywood deal. INSOMNIA stunk compared to the original. It was obvious hack work. Don't want to slam on this too bad before it even gets rolling, but Nolan's quickly become a Hollywood hack along the lines of Gore Verbinski. But I guess every generation needs a John Badham, no?

I agree with another post: the title sounds like a cheap nintendo game. (and they've NEVER made a good Batman videogame) Shorten it to Batman: Intimidation, or start from scratch... (or what about that cool title from one of the comics, Batman: Son of the Demon. that dealt with ras-al ghul, right?)

Selling out? eep. I think that it is damn commendable for a filmmaker of his stature to try and resurrect a dead franchise this early in his career, it takes balls. the easy thing to do would be make another independent feature, lower budget fare with no real pressure. but to take on Batman and try an fix it after that godawful piece of cinematic feces with the governator butchering a cool character like mr.freeze? That movie truly sucked. it hurts my head just thinking about it. but this new one, well... Bale will be an awesome young Batman, and it will be good. Yes, INSOMNIA wasn't the same as the original, but it wasn't worse. okay, the ending of Nolan's version sucked compared to the original...that much is true, but to me, they'll always be two separate movies. why? i dunno, different fucking languages? Let's not get all worked up and pre-pissed about this endeavor, this batman will be radically different than what we've seen before. i hope. and they really should give Adam West a cameo or even a real role. this guy is like the Pete Rose of the Batman franchise,no? Christian Bale is awesome though. it'd be cool to see him bring some villain home, put Huey Lewis & the News on and well you know the rest...

It would be great to see the cast of this film move a bit beyond the Hollywood Top 50, or whichever Ashton Kutcher who is enjoying his 15 months. Starting with Nicholson's flawed Joker, haven't there been plenty of big name actors attached to this series, and where did any of it get us? I say that no Caines or DeNiros need apply. Respect to their talent, but why not scour the backstreet theatres of the world, find a bunch of fresh talented unknowns? And not just for the lead role but for the entire cast. I fucking hate celebrity casting. I saw Alien Directors Cut 2 night's ago, still such a stand alone classic, and who amongst that cast was famous at the time? None of them.

As much as I would so totally enjoy Peter O'Toole as Alfred (and would have enjoyed him as Dumbledore, although I like Gambon too), I wouldn't be too sure that he'd look a lot younger than if Gough had continued to play Alfred. I would rather have Gough continue to play Alfred if that was the case. Between Caine and Hopkins, I agree that Caine is a better pick, but I hope Caine won't talk in cockney. ^_^;
