There was talk of Freddy Vs Jason Vs Ash, but after understanding why Freddy and Jason were chosen to face off, I'm not sure Ash would really fit in. Personally, i'd be up for Freddy Vs Jason Vs Ash Vs Michael Myers Vs Pinhead Vs Chucky Vs The Leprechaun Vs Candyman Vs Jack Bauer but I think that would be pushing it.

I'd be amazed if they have the balls to go through with making this movie. Whichever studio it is are probably shitting their pants after seeing that pic of Colin Farrell in Stone's version from a few days ago. Are they really going to hand over $150 million to make a "Been there, done that" flick? My guess = no. It'll be quietly announced in a couple of months that the project is "on hold", and that's the last anyone will ever hear of it.

Wungolioth: I did try to chase that up, but as it was only a notch or two above a rumour, this proved difficult. What I can tell you: nothing's confirmed, but it was undoubtedly Farsape and not Firefly. As for the talkbackers speculating about the next Freddy vs Jason flick, I like it! After a couple of films, I'd like to see Ash and Van Helsing team up to take on... er... who's left? They'll have obliterated the wolfman, Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster as well as every horror film dude... hm... Jack Valenti, maybe?

In fact, I think we've already seen the troll that Aragorn will fight -- one of the two that were used to open the Black Gate in T2T. Now there was a scene which really worked for me, despite the fact that the good Professor never wrote anything about 'Black Gate trolls' in the book. ***Meanwhile, how come whenever I see the word 'Morannon,' Stevie Nicks starts singing 'Rhiannon' in my head. "Morannon's where this fight'll take place; And wouldn't you love to be there..." OK, I'll stop. It's really to early in the morning to start singing 'Morannon' (to the tune of 'Rhiannon').

Dam right! You get those nasty trolls Aragorn! Oh, erm in the movie, of course. Ha, ha...all you purist (and you KNOW who you are!) better get used to the notion that the Mouth of Sauron is a blind Olog-hai who carry's The Eye of Sauron around on his back. Hey, it's a nice promotion from Black Gate Opener and involves a bit of travel so lets not be too hard on the lad. **SPOILERS** Wait, maybe this is the part where Shelob transmographicates into The Mouse of Sauron and scares the mumak into starting their fatal (fatal for Barad-dur) Morannon Stampede. Cool! Can't wait to see Pippin stabbing the Mouse of Sauron in the back of the knee enabling Aragorn to decapitate the monstrous rat. Wonder how much CGI (or maybe, MAYBE bigalittlature models!)will be employed to show the head sailing over the Morgai where it plops right in the top Mt. Doom causing Sauron's Eye Tower to fall into utter ruin. The Eye floats around after Aragorn kills the troll (O-h) then Legolas shoots it with an Arrow of Woodlanesse. With an ear shattering "BWEEEEYYYUUUUOOO-ploink!" the Reign of Sauron is ended, for ever and ever and ever. The Purist will howl but Jackson STILL has my support!

New ROTK posters, including two of the Witch King. Firstly they prove that the picture in the WK bio on the official site is accurate and up to date and not of the original WK (PJ had him done again, thought he looked too much like prologue Sauron), much to my disappointment, and the shot of a Nazgul on Fell Beast arriving in Minas Tirith to confront Gandalf while he still has Pippin riding pillion IS the WK, so no riding through the gates on a horse, with men falling back before him. :( Nice pitures though, with another of Shelob (don't see anything new since the trailer).

Haven't seen you around for a while... I reckon Aragorn and Pippin will (okay might!!!) fight their trolls side by side at the Black Gate. That's about all the crackpot theories I have right now... Cheers.

Maybe Gandalf and Pippin appear to get killed here (snorf!).I'm still holding out for the gate scene though it may not be at all like the books. Bother...Well, I've warmed up to the WK's look and it IS pretty damned creepy. The whiskers though...the whiskers. Too bad Harry doesn't post much anymore about Lotr. If you can play Region 4 and can't wait for your local release, may as well give it an order. Only problem is I've heard that the trade-off for us getting the dvds so early is that the Region 1 release gets a few more extras. Still, the Region 4s still have a bevy of commentaries, deleted scenes, outtakes, trailers, etc... We're not left wanting.

Hi Moaters! You are not alone (no one is alone, truly *shades of Sondheim....*). I'm here wasting time (instead of in class where I should be) because I was run off the road today by a box-truck making an illegal left turn from the median of a 3 (6?) lane highway. 3 hours later, car towed, no rental available, parental unit drops me off at school, where I decide to skip the class that's already half over and catch up on the LotR news. -- Y'know the Lincoln Center version of Trilogy Tuesday set for Jan. 10? Sold out in about 30 min. What will it take for marathons to appear financially viable to theater owners? Logistically, it's a pain (empty stomachs, full bladders), but since so much money is made in the concessions, I have a feeling that there is real money to be made. -- Also, I need some advice. I won that contest here for the mounted Nazgul months ago, but the things were backordered at Sideshow Toys, so I didn't expect to receive it (and haven't). At what point (now that they are no longer bo-ed) would it be polite to send a questioning email? I don't want to seem pushy or anything, but there's an empty spot on my bookshelf just waiting for it.... Thoughts?

Just back from the Amalfi Coast, which was unspeakably beautiful despite much rain, which merely made the clouds that much more dramatic. Finished off with two perfect days in Rome, then (as if I hadn't been up for 48 hours anyway) we were rerouted to L.A. as visibility in San Diego was too bad for the plane to land, and bussed south from there. Ash everywhere from all the fires.... It was a bit unnerving to see all the horror from long distance (Europe) and not be able to get specifics. Must be a sad sight out there. Monday night's Dolphins/Chargers game had to be moved to Tempe, Az. because Qualcomm Stadium was being used for an evacuation point. Back in '75 I was in L.A. from May till October. I still remember the Santa Ana winds of October -- it was like walking outside into a blast furnace. Anyway, most of what you missed can be found over at TORn -- cool pictures from a Dutch (I believe) LotR:RotK photo-scenes book as well as an excellent report on the upcoming T2T SEV. Three little Elf weeks more, then we attack the store!!! There was also an interesting discussion on the previous tb (#16302) between greenleaf and others and finally, yours truly told another Gondor joke starring Ioreth and Ingold titled 'Meanwhile, back at the Tirith View Nursing Home.' Oh yeah, almost forgot, the Florida Marlins won the World Series, which leads me to ... "I love a parade" ... and Marlins had THREE of 'em yesterday here in South Florida and everyone played hookey. Welcome back D_o_T, hope you enjoyed yourself. To explain my last post, another thing you've missed was a series of LOTR/other-film hybrid scenes, which quickly developed into LOTR/The Big Lebowski hybrid scenes, though my efforts have been shamed by some by mortsleam, sabster, thecutestofborg, SkywayMoaters and others. Join in the fun, if you've a mind. :) ---- Just to repeat what I said on the last TB (after, it seems, everyone had left for this one), "I was wondering if any of you could recommend/warn me off the Encyclopaedia of Middle-Earth (I think it's by Robert Foster?) which I flicked through in my favourite bookshop during my lunchbreak.". It seems to have gone unremarked on this TB, but did anyone else fall off their chair at the report that the TTT SEV includes a new "joke" from Gimli about - and I'm not making this up - "squirrel crap"??? Now, I'm not going to get hysterical until I hear the line for myself, and this report could of course be a fake........BUT WTF!!!!! Yes, I know that George Lucas has paved the way for this kind of joke in fantasy epics, with Jar-jar stepping in poo and the giant aardvark farting.......but please God don't let Gimli actually use the word "crap". It's even more anachronistic than Frodo's "why do you run him down all the time (dude)?" Has PJ decided to assassinate Gimli's character once and for all?

Sabster mentioned the squirrel joke earlier in this tb when he responded to my 'Old Man Willow's NINTH Cousin on his Mother's side' post. I shall wait until I hear see and hear the joke before passing judgement, but I fear the worst. I had hoped that some jokes would be DELETED for the SEV, specifically "You could have found a better spot...", but now we hear there's more jokes (or at least one) to come. Ah well, I do like some of the other ones, particularly the whole bearded Dwarf women thing, so here's hoping that the new one(s) will be good, or at the very least, non-detrimental to the story.

Man, what a chore it's becoming to post here! [And if this double-posted my humble apologies.] I was PC-less again over the weekend, but the past 2 days I couldn't bust through to AICN for the life of me. Am I just impatient? Should I just keep hitting the refresh until it ctaches hold and loads up? It's just crazy how much this fat T3 strains to get anything going on this site only, every so often. (God, in a week I expect I'll be blocked out for, um, a week, when Matrix Revolutions hits.) *** Hey, greenleaf, you still lurking about? I safely SQUIRRELED away an off-topic (TINTIN!) reply to you back at the last TB. Hosed to the top, natch! *** I'm glad I saw the book pics before they yanked em! But TICKED I didn't get to save em before they got yanked. Have to scour the foreign-language galleries, see what if any escaped the publisher's wrath... *** Witch-king posters, and no mistake! Innnnnntellestink photo-edit they did, making the Gandy-confronting Nazgul the W-k. But Schtupitt! Check out that shot in the DVD preview, and it's most definitely jes' another hooded fellow (Nazgul # 3-9, take your pick). So when was that choice made? Or p'raps just a dramatic reimagining for that poster? 'Cause we ALSO know that Grond is most definitely IN. We've seen the model, we've heard (of) the 25,000-plus rugby crowd giving the chant. (And I still hold that that videogame cinematic of Gandalf inside the Gate when it blows is a lift from the movie...) AND I still think it's too open-air to be the first circle of MT, going by all the other set shots. I'm still holding that that shot is on the top tier, an interruption as Gandalf and Pippin ("Shut the fuck up, Pippin" will never, ever get old) race to Denethor's ____. So, maybe it's the W-k for a brief re-match now, who knows. But that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. Not that I'm emotionally invested in that outcome or anything, I just think it's still a possibility with everything else we know (GROND. GROND. GROND. GROND.). *** I think Aragorn takes on a troll at Pelennor. There's plenty of em there, as seen on the preview's battle animatics, and if they're doing major damage to everyone who comes near em up to that point it'll make a hell of an impression if Aragorn jumps off his ship and kicks serious troll heiny. At the Morannon it'll probably be an ocean of orcs, eh all right, maybe a troll or two on the way, to plow through on his way to the Orifice of Sauron. But that's all just a guess, too. *** Gotta fly again (hiya, d.o.t.!) (and everyone else). I'll be back 'round tomorrow, that is if the site doesn't go all SQUIRRELLY again.

Use your responsibility wisely my son. As one who ruled a TB in the past ("/display.cgi?id=16302#692682 "), you could do worse to look back at my example and follow in my footsteps. :) ---- C_of_B, Britney Spears is coming to London? Good job I live nowhere near it, and after my last trip down there (to see the LOTR movie exhibition, excellent by the way!) was so awful, I don't intend to go back down again (except maybe to catch the LOTR exhibition again before it leaves Europe!). ---- Pallando Blue, well observed about the Witch King/Gandalf poster, I think you could be right about it being just a mock up to make a good poster, and not actually how the scene is in the film. It DID just look like a regular Ulaire in the trailer (on the TTT DVD). Also, there are definately Trolls in front of the Morannon that Aragorn could fight, Pippin kills one, remember? Can't see them leaving that out. As for the Pelennor, I imagine once Aragorn arrives with the Gondorian irregulars the battle won't be shown in all it's gritty detail, I can see it being like the arrival of Gandalf and Eomer at Helm's Deep in TTT, where it's presented as this cathartic, emotional climax to the battle, with beautiful triumphant music, and Aragorn's arrival as a Deus Ex Machina, suddenly releasing all our tension in a moment of glorious triumphant joy. Or, I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. :)

It's easy to take one scene we know will be in, (ie, the drenched Frodo & Sam scene) and then add in a bunch of wild speculation. Phillipa Boyens said in the FOTR commentary that while nothing from the Old Forest and the House od Tom Bombadil made it into the movie, there was nothing to suggest it didn't happen. By having Merry & Pippin run into "Old Man Willow's cousin 9 times removed" they basically say it didn't. Plus, after runningn into one talking tree (Treebeard hissef) they run into another? Sounds a tad repetetive. And the squirrel crap line is just too anachronistic and out of character. Just has to be. I'll believe it when I see it, which will be in a little over two weeks! So what does Walrus J. Mortsleam hope to see in the SEV? The Ent Draughts, the tale of the Ent Wives, Gimli in the Glittering Caves, Sam and the dead Southron. Also, I'm hoping PJ goes back into FOTR and adds the scene just before Boromir's death, when Pippin knocks out a Uruk-Hai, then turns to Merry and says. Pippin: "I am throwin' rocks tonight!" Merry: "Shut the fuck up, Pippin, you're out of your element! The whole world doesn't revolve around you, you miserable piece of shit! Anyway Frodo, Dude, about this ring..."
As per Pallando's suggestion...

You beat me to the hunt! Good news/bad news on the link you put up, tho. Bad news is, there's a message there that they had to take the images down per PJ's request. The good news is, click on the Gallery link to the left, then the first item on that list, and find all the good ones (or at least many of the ones I remember) right there, big 'n' clean! AND a few more TORN never had! Guess what, purists.... The Houses of Healing are IN! A photo of Aragorn holding a passed-out Faramir's hand--evidence enough for ya? Also one of a grimacing Sam over the shoulder of a very surprised looking Gorbag (or Shagrat?)... thinkin' someone got themselves a nice new maggot-hole right in their kidney. (Do orcs have kidneys? Or does that open up too many other horrible speculations?) And another of Sam and Frodo, still in Orc-garb but sans helms, Sam trying to help Frodo to the top of a ridge. *** Oh poor vacation-less me, I've been told that I'll have more leave time left after Dec. than I can roll over to 2004. So I'm usin' em, dammit. And among the many dates and times I just secured over the next 2 months for escape from the desk shackles, was a seemingly random November 19th. On that day, of course, I shall be watching the SEVs back-to-back-to-back-to-back (it's 4 discs, ya know). Mini-marathon! A warm-up, of sorts. [Yep, to whomever it was asked, I am indeed a Dec 16th Tuesday Trilogy LOTR Marathoner!] Gotta get that butt in training! Goals: maintain circulation to the ankles over long-term sedentary situations, calculate maximum caffeine application via alertness-versus-bladder-over- time ratios, minimize muscle cramping and eyeball strain... Don't wanna pull a hammy halfway through Helm's Deep! [On screen, EOMER: "We cannot achievve victory through strength of arms." ARAGORN: "No, but we can give Frodo a chance." PB collapses into theater aisle, "AAIIIEEE, groin pull! Groin pull!" MARATHONER 1: "Poor kid, he almost made it." MARATHONER 2: "Yep, he should have stretched. Shame. Pass the Gatorade."]

Great photos.... Though I'm almost starting to share Elanor's determination to avoid further spoilers. I do wonder about Mt. Doom and Mordor environs generally being a bit blue-skied, unless these photos are before color grading. Unfortunately, bookstores are few and far between on the Amalfi Coast, as I'd have liked to get my hands on some LOTR material in Italian. ***Still getting the odd cinder in the eye from the local firestorms, but it looks like the battle is turning. Hoping to get some pillows and things to the front lines tomorrow, as the firefighters are desperately short of bedding. Also need to give blood.... It's all been quite unimaginably horrible for those directly affected, next to which one can't possible complain about mere bad air.

Everyone is quite right in pointing out that just because Annie Lennox says something doesn't necessarily make it so. So praps "well I'm back" IS still in, but is not the end of the movie? Would that keep the purists happy? There are rumours of a Galadriel voice over at the end of ROTK so perhaps SG, PT and MB watch the boat sail off to the havens, return to the shire, SG delivers the line and then the voiceover from Galadriel starts while we see the ship dissappearing into the West and the grey rain cloud turns all to Silver glass and rolls back and we behold White shores and a far Green country under a swift sunrise? That seems like a pretty cinematic ending to me... And Pontsing as the designated leader of this Tb, I can use the T word iffen I feel like it, so there!!!(Blows loud raspberry towards Pontsing...) Cheers.
C_of_B, PJ said the films are bookended by Galadriel.
by raw_bean

The films can't be bookended by the Shire, they didn't even start with the Shire. They started with "I Aman, prestar aen. The world is changed...". THEN came the Shire. Then Galadriel had another little voiceover bit at the halfway mark "In his heart Frodo begins to understand; the quest will claim his life.", then she's going to finish the film with a sort of epilogue to mirror the prologue. My hope is, however, that the "I'm home" line is in, and that although Galadriel bookends the films with prologue, interlogue (? made it up, but the bit in the middle of TTT, anyway) and epilogue, but that the main narrative starts and ends in the Shire (which is still more or less what you're wanting, isn't it?). :) ---- Pontsing_Barset how dare you insult our leader! He uses what words he sees fit, in his glorious wisdom! I think the only way you can restore some dignity now is to commit Hari Kari.

Here is a post from the TolkienOnline message boards ***WARNING! MAJOR and I mean MAJOR SPOILERS!!!*** Hello. I happened to be in a movie store in the local mall when I saw the ROTK Visual Companion and Weapons and Warfare books for sale. Well, I grabbed them and quickly purchased them. Here's a few spoilers from the visual companion: Regarding Aragorn facing Sauron via the Palantir: "But instead, Sauron offers Aragorn a terrible vision: of his beloved , pale and lifeless, bereft of her elven immortality. The Evenstar, the jewel that Arwen gave to Aragorn as a token of their love, shatters. Far away across ME, the effect of this sorcery is felt: the power of the Evenstar is broken. But to embrace a life on ME and live as a mortal with herlove was the choice that Arwen had already made. Even Sauron's malice cannot destroy their love." Paths of the Dead: "Ghastly bony hands clutch at them out of the chill darkness; fog swirls; voices wail. All around them are the dead: their king and row upon row of his spectral warriors. As they gather for attack, Aragorn draws the Sword Reforged and claims their allegiance anew, promising in exchange for their duty that he will release them from their living death. They listen; and they follow..." Regarding the Tower of Cirith Ungol, it mentions the Watchers outside of the tower. "Each of the statues boasts three vulture heads, and the heads face inward, outward and across the gateway, ready to sound an alarm if any intruder or spy should pass." There is a great pic of Sam struggling underneath Shelob. My favorite photo is on of Frodo Sam and Gollum on the bridge in front of Minas Morgul before the Witch King's army sets out. Description of Grond: "At over 100 ft in length, it is as long as a forest tree, and it swings on huge iron chains. Its head is fashioned of black steel in the likeness of a ravening wolf, and fire shoots from its eyes. Four mountain trolls draw it forth. Trolls will wield the weapon, and Orcs will defend it, and the Witch-king of Angmar will direct its use." Here's some quotes: 'Mordor: this city has dwelt ever in sight of that shadow.' 'It is before the walls of Minas Tirith that the doom of our time will be decided!' 'The rule of Gondor is mine, and no other's!' Denethor 'Boromir was loyal to me and no wizard's pupil' Denethor to Faramir? 'The houses of dead are no places for the living' 'No army of Sauron has ever crossed the Anduin, not while the men of Gondor have held the passage of the river' 'Sauron will have not forgotten the sword of Elendil...The blade that broke shall return to Minas Tirith' Aragorn or Elrond? 'The dead are following...I see shapes of men and of horses and pale banners like shreds of clouds, and spears like thickets on a misty night' 'Here do I swear fealty and service to Gondor, in living or dying, from this hour henceforth, until my lord release me, or death take me' Pippin 'Courage will now be your best defense against the storm that is at hand' Gandalf? 'Say to Denethor that in this hour the King of the Mark himself will come down to the land of Gondor, though may be he will not ride back' Theoden 'Do not come between the Nazgul and his prey!' 'There may come a day when the courage of men fails...an hour of wolves before the Age of Men comes crashing down - but it will not be this day! This day we fight!' Aragorn More quotes: 'Master carries heavy burden...Smeagol knows: Smeagol carried burden many years.' Possible transition to flashback?? Gollum on Minas Morgul: 'Ruined city, yes, very nasty place, full of enemies' 'There's something worse than Gollum about. I can feel something looking at us' 'I must have something to do before the end. I must see it through...' Sam 'There is no veil between me and the wheel of fire. I see it even with my waking eyes...' Frodo 'Destroy it now...throw it into the fire!' Sam 'I have made my choice...' Frodo Interesting and vague bit about Saruman in the Weapons and Warfare book: "But when the first people to return to Isengard were Theoden, Aragorn and Gandalf the White, Saruman knew that all his plans for domination had failed. Scholars still disagree over the fate of the White Wizard. Some maintain that instead of falling at Orthanc under Wormtongue's dagger, he was struck down in the shire..." Hmmm, I know the scouring is out, just makes you wonder about his demise... Also from Weapons and Warfare: Pippin's and Merry's elven daggers were discarded by the raiding party of Uruk hai. So, it looks like Merry uses the sword given to him by Theoden. It says this sword was used by Theoden when he was a boy. Merry also wears Theoden's childhood armor. Frodo gives Sting to Sam before leaving over the sea. It became an heirloom of the Gamgee family. More from Weapons and Warfare: From section on Dunaharrow: 'At this time, Elrond arrived at Theoden's tent with a mighty gift for Aragorn. He had brought with him the shards of Narsil, now reforged by the smiths of Rivendell as Anduril, "Flame of the West". So, according to this book, no Arwen anywhere near Dunharrow :-) The Weapons and Warfare books gives a history of all of the major characters in LOTR. Everything else in Saruman's section ties exactly to the films. Perhaps the filmmakers didn't let the author know the method of demise for Saruman. Regarding the potential Witch-king vs. Gandalf, the book states that Gandalf leads hundreds of Gondorian soldiers to the gate but they are all driven back to the third level. "It was at this time that the Witch-king flew into the city and faced its commander, Gandalf" Furthermore, the visual companion has a big two page photo of Gandalf facing the Witchking on his fell beast. It looks like the exact same shot that was at the end of the ROTK preview on the Two Towers dvd. Regarding the mumakil(oliphaunts) the Weapons and Warfare book states that an oliphaunt can be killed with a single arrow shot in the eye. Anyone wanna bet this is how Legolas takes out the big guy? From W and W: On the mouth of Sauron: "His final parley was with Aragorn, who concluded negotiations in decisive fashion, proving that his weapon was stronger that his opponent's" It also states that Aragorn slew a mighty cave troll at the black gates. It says that Aragorn led a force of 500 to the Black Gates. The force of the enemy was between 200,000 and 300,000. Some cool details regarding the Army of the Dead at Pelennor: "The Dead Men glowed with a sick green phosphorescence, and when they attacked, they surged and rolled over the thralls of Mordor in successive vaporous waves, screaming an unearthly scream. The spectres moved faster than their enemy could run, and when they swung their weapons, they left a trail of vapor behind them." "Instead of drawing blood from their victims, the Dead Men's weapons seemed to suck the very life out of them."

Yes, I thought you'd be disappointed about (SPOILER) Merry using Theoden junior's sword. As for Theoden saying the Nazgul's prey line, that's not correct. The character names are at the end of each quote, not the start, and anyway, I think that's just pure speculation by the guy who bought the book, he puts question marks after some of the names. From Jude Fisher's LotR:RotK Visual Companion which I purchased today [MAJOR SPOILER]: "Then it is that the Lord of the Nazgul, the Witch-king of Angmar, swoops down and his fell beast grabs up in its cruel claws both Theoden and his white stallion, Snowmane; and thus comes the death of the valiant King of Rohan. / Then an unnamed Rider steps into the breach and with a single swipe of his shining sword beheads the vile monster on which the Witch-king is mounted." ***So after today's Physical Therapy session (haven't picked up a club since the Fourth of July, BG; but thanks for asking) I stopped at B&N to buy the Visual Companion. When I didn't see it on the shelves I asked a store clerk if it was in stock. He went to the computer and said that NINE copies of the softcover version would be in tomorrow. I replied that I wanted the hardcover version today. He replied that there was no hardcover version even though I was holding the hardcover LotR:FotR V.C. in my hand to show him what I wanted. I then left the store, drove over to Boarders and bought the hardcover version I wanted. I passed on that 'Weapons' book for now. That was in softcover, but I think I'll leaf through it in the store before deciding.

Incidentally, morG you heathen, I'd also noticed the lack of Eowyn/Uruk Hai bust up footage in the glittering caves (my post on it is buried up there somewhere), and at this point I'm wondering if it's gone the way of 'XenArwen at Helm's Deep'.

That Snaga-Rot was starting to make me a bit 'irritable' quite frankly and I was starting to think strange thoughts (like I was the leader of the talkbacks,) instead of a mere occasional (or perhaps a bit more) poster... I think I deserve a bit more credit than Tinuviel (blessings be upon her) though MorGoth, here I am using my precious breaks from breaking heads at the club to unhose this here tb, TWICE I might add too... I wasn't really upset Pontsing and I wasn't offended by your post, it DOES take a bit more than what you said to 'get my back up', though Barstardo usually manages it... Those LOTR pics are fantastic. Everything I see and hear about ROTK is very good (except Merry using a different sword to dispatch you know who... Why couldn't it be the sword that Aragorn gave him, at least?) Ah well, we don't always get everything we wants, does we precious? Going to see Matrix Revolutions tonight (at Midnight...) hope it's better than reloaded. Cheers.

BG, thanks for the link! I kept wondering where everyone was, forgetting to scroll higher up. And I must say, that orc armor is oddly fetching - I think it's the suggestion of a Cavalier collar in the way the plates splay out. ***In reference to the SEV reviews, in which it is said that Gollum "gets the snot beat out of him" by Faramir's men, I think I am vindicated after saying in an earlier post or two that I was sensing something of the sort behind the scenes and was told I was evil-minded (in so many words). Yes, these are not the noble Ithilien rangers of the book, take it for what you will. (Did anyone else note PJ saying in the latest fan magazine interview that they had, indeed, painted themselves into something of a corner with Faramir, with the changes they had to make to him to fit the film's take on the Ring's power?) I get the sense that even the film's creators realized they might have gone a bit too far with the Un-Faramir-izing, and are hoping the SEV will soften the effect. Which I hope it does, but I'm still more excited about more Boromir.

Alright, alright, let me see what I can come up with. This one's for extra credit: Aragorn walks along the path to Helm's Deep, surrounded by Rohan refugees. Eowyn walks beside him. She notices the Evenstar around his neck. Eowyn: "Where is the one who gave you that pendant?" Aragorn (obviously troubled:) "She is going to the West, with her people." Eowyn: "Sorry, I didn't mean to hassle you about your special lady." Aragorn: "No, man, she's not my fucking special lady, she's my god-damn lady friend, man! I'm just helping her conceive, alright?"

I remember some of you were wondering what was with Eowyn walking about with a slight frown on the Pelennor fields. That shot looks to me like a shot of Miranda Otto, not Eowyn, if you see what I mean. Between takes, as she thinks about her lines, or somesuch. A couple of other shots in there strike me that way, too, eg. Sam with Sting, looks like Sean Astin sitting down for a rest between takes and admiring the work of Weta up close, now that he's going to be using Sting in scenes for the first time. What's anyone think? Am I barking up the wrong tree? Or just barking mad?

I too have been pondering morGy's question about the Eowyn pic, but I'm not sure about your theory. Would a movie Visual Companion contain between takes pics or pics that weren't from the movie itself? Did the first two movie VCs contain any pics that weren't from the actual movies? If it is from the movie it must be between the big charge into battle and the encounter with the WK, perhaps contemplating a fallen comrade?

As it seems Dernhelm's identity will be known to the audience, I'm gonna throw out some wild speculation and say that she removes the helmet during battle, so that we get to see the luvverly Miranda Otto's determined visage as she hacks at ol' WK. Because the audience has to see the faces of the protagonists as they are involved in big heroics. It's a sound visual choice, even if it takes some drama away from her little bit of cross-dressing. But I'm sure that the reveal to Merry (and Theoden?) will be handled well, it will just come slightly before her big scene. *** As for the TTT SEV, well, color me emerald in envy of elanor (would that be "eee"?) How do, elanor, and well DONE! To paraphrase a fictional Playtone record executive, I am positively chartreuse with envy. :) ...But dang, I had just had about 15 hours of renewed hope for Eowyn uruk-ventilation. I picked up the "Weapons and Warfare" book last night, and while I've only just skimmed it so far I can certainly warn you that there are SPOILERS WITHIN! I can very much lay out for y'all what happens when, the whole sequence of events on the Pelennor. Fear not, I shan't spoil all (unless sufficiently begged, I s'pose, but then only with heavily capped warnings), and if you want ALL the goods then head on over to a local bookstore and browse until they kick you out. What I WILL say though, is that it is pretty much in line with the book in all the important ways, IMO. And, as implied in my subject line, Oh My Freaking Golly but Grond is certainly freakin in there. All that's in the book is 2 more art drawings and the same front-way shot of the model, but man o man o man is the color concept drawing of Grond being moved toward the Gate the stuff of nightmares. And there's a full page of text description (the book is very, very text-heavy). Yep there's that smaller handheld ram we've seen in the trailers, but trust me. HA HA HA HA! It's a toothpick! And it ain't Grond, baby. It delights me to no end that PJ & Co. have been holding this monster back from the general unknowing public. When people see this weapon "which surely took decades to construct, so long in planning was the Dark Lord's war" (or something), this utter horrifying Made-For-Trailers money shot that has been kept completely hidden, and with the sound of 25,000 rugby fans chanting Grond! Grond Grond! ...there are going to be more than a few shuddering spines, and as many wet laps. *** Okay, back to my dashed Ginsu Eowyn hopes. As I said, I've only skimmed the W&W text (and may wait until January to really read it, knowing what kind of spoilers may still await...), but in Eowyn's section a little bit did catch my eye: "Although sent to the Glittering Caves by her uncle at the Battle of Helm's Deep, she fought bravely, killing many Uruk-hai as she protected the refugees who were hiding there." ...gasp! Clouds part, dove bearing olive branch alights on shoulder to chorus of angels! Then elanor comes along, and Poof. The dove's really a pigeon, olive branch is a filterless camel, and the "chorus" turns out to be said pigeon's sidewalk lunch making a hasty and audible back-door exit. (I just cleaned this white shirt!) Ah well, c'est la poop. I shall take the report of more Otto swooniness as consolation. Further hope, however, for the Dernhelm hopefuls: "Later, and against her uncle's wishes, she rode in disguise with the Rohirrim to the Pelennor Fields, taking the hobbit Merry with her." *** Lastly, to quell the Where does Aragorn kill a troll? line of query, he apparently does so at the Black Gates. And apparently, it's a troll with a topknot..? :) *** Okay, really lastly and this time I mean it. A shot of the Mouth of Sauron's helmet (doffed, photoed separate, no actual MoS shot, dangit...). Damn creepy: "His helm left only his mouth exposed and was etched with runes written in the Black Speech: 'I am the Mouth of Sauron, hear him speak.'"

...was indeed just the first mini-doc of Disc 3 of the SEV. No ROTK footage--no, wait, check that, just remembered there was a longer pan up the tower of Cirith Ungol, very nice. But that's it for ROTK. And not much T2T SEV footage, although I did get to see M&P get pulled in by Old Man Willow--looked great! Other than that, the few SEV shots were already seen in the last DVD's preview. The mini-doc itself, well, like the one that opens the FOTR SEV Disc 3, it's 95% about Tolkien and LOTR, 5% about the film adaptation, and simply wonderful. Like the last one, it'll proably be my fave of the supplemental material, and the most revisited. One bit I never knew--that CS Lewis was a large man, with a great booming voice (opposite the slight, relatively quiet Tolkien). And word on the street is, he was the basis for Treebeard's character! Shippey's description of Lewis being heard coming down the university halls, entering a class, and continuing on his HOOM HUM HROOMing without missing a beat draws a picture that genuinely earns a laugh out loud (did last night, anyway). *** TWELVE DAYS TO GO! Take him at his word: He's not lying when he says he'll never stop being an asshole, because he enjoys the reaction being an asshole creates. It's gotten so old and redundant now, it's just kinda schtick. And, really, pretty boring at this point, when you've been reading it for months on end. Especially when you know he's faking it half the time. I almost just wish he was more creative about it. He kinda just merits a shrug at this point. *** Not to sound hypocritical, but don't feel bad about a Matrix fan-pokin'. :) Sometimes such stuff--especially to the "You just don't UNDERSTAND it!" Matrix cultists--is completely irresistable. Turnabout's fair play, of course! (Gosh, have *I* ever said "You just don't UNDERSTAND LOTR!"..? He looks to me to put things right, and I would do it; I would see the glory of Gondor restored. Have you ever seen it Aragorn? The white tower of Ecthelion glistening like a silver spike, it's banners caught high in the morning breeze. Have you ever been called home, by the clear ringing of silver trumpets?", "For England, James.", "One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its Black Gates are guarded by more than just Orcs; there is evil there, that does not sleep, and the great Eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland, riddled with fire, and ash. The very air you breath, is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this; it is folly.", and the entire Boromir tries to take the Ring from Frodo scene at Amon Hen, every last word. Hope I didn't mangle any quotes, those were straight from memory. :)
Easter egg hunt..?

So, elanor, did you hunt around the menus for the spots the eggs were hidden in last year's? My hopes aren't really up, as by this time last year the easter eggs had already been reported wide on the 'net. But nebberdeless, I am surprised they didn't at least include the MTV stuff again. Gollum's acceptance speech deserves archival preservation! *** Oh I am so SICK of all this constant fawning over Un!Boromir! The liberties these hack filmmakers have taken with his character are SO out of line with Tolkien's work--who the HELL do they think they ARE? Where's the smug menace? Where's the brutishness, the reliance on muscle over brains? Where's the vanity, the paranoia? Where's the bushy red beard, ratty tunic, and fake-cow-horned helme-- Wait, hold on, lemme regroup. ;)

interestingly enough, I saw the Bakshi LOTR when I was very young, well before I'd read the book (maybe he Hobbit by then, though), and the only things that really stayed with me were horned Boromir being shot repeatedly with arrows, and Gandalf the White leading the charge into Helm's Deep, the two moments from PJ's films that stayed with me the most!

Every single line is a killer. And only the leaky batteries of my photographic memory prevented me from putting them all in. *** Sabster wins for best single line AND best quiet moment. To answer your question: Who is Marilyn Mon-Rohan? She's a particularly fetching lass the camera lingers on as Aragorn returns to Helm's Deep. I believe it was elanor herself who came up with the name. *** elanor, I'm sure they didn't actually call her that in the commentaries, but wouldn't it be great if they did? Just to know you made some small contribution. Or at least prove that BG is actually PJ...

"None of us should wander alone; you least of all. So much depends on you. Frodo? I know why you seek solitude; you suffer, I see it day by day. Are you sure you do not suffer needlessly? There are other ways Frodo, other paths that we might take." F:'I know what you would say, and it would sound like wisdom but for the warning in my heart.' B:"Warning? Against what? We're all afraid Frodo, but to let that fear drive us to destroy what hope we have, don't you see that is madness!" F:'There is no other way!' B(angry):"I ask only for the strength to defend my people! If you would but lend me the Ring...Why do you recoil, I am no thief?!" F:'You are not yourself!' B(anger overcoming him):"You FOOL! It is not yours save by unhappy chance, it could have been mine, it SHOULD be mine! Give it to me!" F:'No!' B:"I see your mind! You will betray us! You will take the Ring to Sauron! You go to your death, and the death of us all! Curse you, curse you! And all the halflings!" "Frodo? What have I done? Frodo!" "Frodo I'm sorry!". Phew! I think that establishes my fanboy geek credentials beyond any doubt! :)

What can fans of other franchises think of us Ringers if this is how we present ourselves to the rest of the AICN world? You give us all a bad name! Remember, when you venture into other TBs, you are ambasadors for the Ringers, conduct yourselves accordingly! :)" NOT his wonderful Boromir quotes. I got this hang up with authority see? MY problem. My post was not intended with any real hostility however. I was going for 'tongue in cheek', obviously I was wide of the mark by a wide margin; but I don't take it back...

Just my Two Bobs for raw_bean's post there away's back a bit. Unfortunately to the hardcore SW and Matrix fans, raw_bean, we're basement dwelling, dungeon master geeks with no lives away from our computers. NOTHING any of us has yet been able to write has been able to sway any of these people. Thus I now feel free to say whatever I like. I'm not representing anyone other than yours truly, I don't only post in LOTR tb's... Now I'm off to the front page to 'upset' some more non LOTR tb'ers. Cheers.

It's about politeness and respect for others, whether you think they deserve it or not. It's about not sinking to the level of MisterGrimmloch and other trolls who've come here just to insult us, and not decrying them nasty trolls before yourself going away to other TBs and behaving the same way there. All this bickering and insulting each other just saddens me. Am I really the only TBer who genuinely doesn't have an issue with any other group of people on AICN and feels no urge to be rude to anyone (at least, not unless they provoke me to it)? :(

Sorry if that came across a bit too cry-babyish. There's nothing wrong with teasing, ribbing and jokey rivalry, of course. I should point out, I'm a big fan of Star Wars and the Matrix films as well as LOTR, and although I would never have gotten into a group of TBers on those franchises 'instead' of here with you lot, I would have gotten into the SW and Matrix communities 'as well', except for the vast number of trolls, ignorant idiots and all the bitter fighting that goes on on Matrix and SW TBs. I really got into Ring TBs here, and only casually pop into others, because Ringers, for the most part, seemed a different breed; friendlier, more tolerant, more intelligent and mature, more prepared to discuss films in a grown up manner. It's a bit of a culture shock to find some of these same Ringers are also part of the problem on the SW and Matrix TBs. ---- Ah well, I'm not one to be down for long. :) Anyone seen the latest stuff on TORN? Pallando, the MTV Gollum speech IS available as and Easter Egg on TTT DVD. In the US anyway, the last MTV LOTR spoof wasn't available on the FOTR:EE DVD, 'casue the BBFC said the age rating would have to be upped, and the suits didn't like that, so off it went! :( --- Also, an interview on TORN with someone from WETA indicates we'll see more Bilbo in ROTK (Grey Havens I assume) looking really ancient. Some good news is welcome after the unfortunate 'Saruman' sitation.

Hmmm, you could almost say Saruman's been 'kidnapped', from ROTK? Anyone feel like reviving the Big Lebowski fun? My brains not working well enough to figure this one out right now (lack of sleep is to blame, I think, for which I also blame my maudlin disappointment evident in the last two posts. Just to get things in perspective, when I originally was commenting on Ringers baiting SW and Matrix fans, I WAS joking, you know?).
