This is the first I've heard of this...did I misunderstand? And is it separate from the movie? Hmm...

I think Joel Edgerton is one of the most over-rated actors to come out into the limelight in recent years. I mean, come on, he was in Secret Life of Us for a couple of seasons and he's suddenly the bees knees? What a crock. But, hopefully, being in the early stages, it's all LIES and I won't have to be put off seeing Superman when it (finally...ever?) comes out. Rock on.

It was a traumtizing day when I was eight and I saw a signed herge poster of tintin giving haddock a blow job. I believe someone mentioned jude law as tintin, that would be good. BTW brendan fraser would be a TERRIBLE superman. It's almost comical thinking of that big doofus trying to play that part seriously. And with glasses on being kent? Hahaha.

It's just wrong. I can't put my finger on it but thinking of him in the blue tights just doesn't compute. Maybe it's the puppy-dog sad eyes. Maybe it's because I've seen him in "Blast from the Past" too many times (seems like if you watch TBS, it's on every other week!). I don't know. I liked him in the Mummy movies. Thought he did a good job in them. But, he's just not Superman. At least, he's not the Alex Ross / Curt Swan / Wayne Boring Superman that I grew up with. That Superman was big and beefy. He wasn't some slimmed-down underwear model. He had the physique that made you believe he could do the things the Man of Steel could do. Fraser doesn't have that. Sure, he's tall and he's got a good build; but not Superman's. Look at Alex Ross' depictions of him. Any of them, it doesn't matter. That's what Superman is supposed to look like. So far, I haven't heard of a single actor proposed who could fill that bill. Everyone's thinking if they can find someone like Christopher Reeve, he'll grow into the role. Well, Reeve was a once in a lifetime find. It was a Hollywood miracle that they found him (and in reality, they didn't find him, he found them). WB is wanting a big name to draw in the audience. They need to take a page from Marvel's playbook and look at what they did. With the exception of "Daredevil", they didn't have a big name actor portraying their famous characters. Most were A-/B+ level actors and actresses. Hugh Jackson's Wolverine is a great example. Now, Hugh's Wolvie was different from the source material in that he was taller than Logan; but that is for the purists to argue. He pulled it off by studying the character and his traits. The point is, though, no one had really ever heard of Jackson prior to "X-Men". I think when Warners decides to let the characters and the story be the stars of their movies, they'll have a success. 'Til then, forget about it. I have no desire to see Halle Berry as "Catwoman", nor do I have a lot of faith in Christian Bale's turn as "Batman". I've got less hope for that film than I did for the first Batman film when they announced Michael Keaton would star. I wish they'd just scratch Fraser off the list and find a relatively unknown who looks the part.

The Reloaded cliffhanger

To zabbadoo.... the last beat of Reloaded ISN'T Neo stopping the sentinels. The so-called cliffhanger to Reloaded is the shot of the guy who we'd already seen twice in the film, therefore ISN'T a new piece of information, which is the point that Latauro was correctly making.

Do they not understand what kind of predicament they're in? If they can't pull off a good Superman movie, you may as well kiss the whole DC Universe goodbye. Which, frankly, is ok by me, it seems as if they need to let go of the licenses and turn it over to studios that will take some chances with these projects. If WB were to sell all of their interest in DC tomorrow, the fans will be that much better for it. They haven't ever known what to do with these characters, the original Superman movie was solely Richard Donner's creation, and the first and second Batman movies were only as good as they were(could have been better) because Tim Burton was an oddball and they couldn't tell him what to do. They need to stop production, get someone into the director's chair that gives a crap, and leave that person alone. Otherwise, expect that WB will sell DC in about 2 years, that's my prediction.

I'm not here to start an argument but i thought Kill Bill and Matrix Reloaded weren't that good. I'm saying 5 out of 10 star movies. Matrix Reloaded's fight scenes seemed like they were stuckin there whether they had to do with the plot or not. And Kill Bill had the WORST DIALOG I have seen in a long time. Both movies had awesome fight scenes I just wish they lived up the my standards.

joel edgerton or "tommy" long as jimmy olsen? one can only assume you're taking the piss. edgerton's in his late twenties, long's in his thirties - olsen's a fucking cadet reporter! if fraser gets the lead in 'superman' (which he bloody well should), then either of these guys could go up against him as luthor's muscle - I'd be happy to see it. but not as olsen, no way. (dumbo-eared clayton watson - the kid from 'reloaded' - would probably be a better fit.) still, jack thompson could get away with playing perry white, just as long as he doesn't fall back on that southern accent he always uses when he plays an american role. and whoever said edgerton was overrated simply hasn't been paying attention - the dude's a solid actor (check out his top-shelf work in the otherwise abysmal 'hard word').

It's a sad shame when one of the best Sci-Fi shows ever gets cancelled by the network that spawned it, then they continue to produce crap shows like Stargate, Tremors and that infernal faker John Edwards. FIREFLY came and went so quickly here in the U.S. that I blinked and it was gone.

Jimmy Olsen

Joel Edgerton and Tom Long were the names the scooper had heard were associated with Superman. I speculated that Edgerton would be cast as Olsen, not because I think it's dreamcasting, but because it's the sort of thing Warners would do: cast a young, blonde spunk in the role, regardless of whether he's appropriate or not. You don't think Warners would look at a character like Jimmy Olsen and say, "Yeah, but can we make him a bit cooler?"? On the other hand, I do think Thompson would make a pretty good Perry White...

I'm inclined to agree with folks who've been posting that this is a bit of a frell-up. The rumor of either a 4-hour FS mini or a theatrical film has been floating around pretty heavy in the fan community for about a month now. This and the fact that Firefly wasn't made in Australia in the first place and FS was. On the other hand, the in-development theatrical Firefly film seems to be on the fast track, so hopefully within the next year BOTH sectors of fandom will have something worth singin' about.

FIREFLY ... Possible Confusion ?

White Giant could well be right but I think there is a possibility of some major wire crossing here. An Australian TV network has recently shot a telemovie called FIREFLIES and they've commissioned it as a new series for 2004. It's actually about the rural fire service!
Firefly and Farscape

I haven't spoken to White Giant since the column went up, but I do agree with the idea that he confused Farscape and Firefly. Those of you who are saying it's going to be Farscape will probably be proven right. Also, Purple Prole is correct with the Reloaded cliffhanger. The bit with Neo stopping the sentinels? Classic. Love it. That should have been the cliffhanger.

the lame beat that Matrix:Reloaded ended on , wasn't Neo downing the sentinel. That was actually kind of cool. The film ended with the startling revelation that the only survivor of the massacre was Bane (I think that was his name), the dope who got his ass "Agent Smith-ed" earlier in the movie. And, yeah, we all saw that coming.
Brendan Frasier is an Excellent Choice for The Man of Steel
by Kon-El
Oct 19th, 2003
05:28:54 PM
You know why, because he has soul. That's why Mr. Reeve is the quintessential Superman - because he reflected the icon's virtues and vulnerabilities with simplicity and sincerity. Yes, Frasier has the height (6'3"), the build ("George of the Jungle," "The Mummy"), the hair (black), and the eyes (bright blue). But you know what about really connects with The Man of Tommorrow? The soul you see in his eyes. In each of his performances, no matter how lackluster the film, I find compassion, honesty, vulnerability, and shyness. He's not a pretty boy, he brings meaning and depth to each character. Has anybody seen "School Ties"? You really care for him because you know he's a decent person. Has anybody seen "Bedazzled"? A spot-on "Clark Kent" portrayal. Has anybody seen the "Mummy" films? Maybe not his most esteemed work, but he was tough, intense, and likeable all at once. The Hartnetts and Walkers may make the "Teen People" covers, but Frasier is the only known actor who's performance can not only bring Superman's physical traits to the table, but also what makes him great - his soul. p.s. Selma Blair is Lois Lane. 5'6", black hair, blue eyes, smart, tough, sweet, mischievous, and man is she a babe.

The dwarfers still have funny to bring to the table. (Now there's a sentence for you!). ---------------- As for Farscape/Firefly, it seems to me that this runour must be really a farscape one. Because, firstly, farscape was made in Austrailia, Firefly wasn't, and also Firefly's being made into a movie (or at least, Joss Whedon is trying to sell a Firefly movie at the mo), so it's not going to be made into an Austrailian miniseries in the imediate future. If it's Farscape, then what can I say but WAHAAAAAYYY!! The best damn genre TV show EVER is not to be left to rot on a "To be continued..." by the ungrateful SciFi channel, what better news could there be?

I really hope this is a conclusion for Farscape. The series needs to have an ending; the fans need to know what happened to the characters. And I am proud to say that I have not watched a single minute of anything on the SciFi channel, or visited their website since Farscape was canceled. I hope everyone else is keeping up with the boycott.

I completely agree with kon-el's post regarding the potential casting of Brendan Frasier as the Man of Steel. He is physically perfect for the role of Superman, and his warmth and personality are even more ideally suited for the role of Clark Kent. I hope this bit of casting news is true.

Hurry up already! If this were an American movie, not only would it have hit theaters two months after the script was finished, there would be at least TWO direct-to-video sequels by now, replacing the big-screen stars with Dave Chappelle as Lister, Ed Begley Jr. as Rimmer, Paluy Shore as Holly, and Jimmie Walker as the Cat!
Fraser As Superman And Other Casting
by Barron34
Oct 20th, 2003
03:40:46 PM
I was originally down on the idea of Brendan Fraser as Superman, but I have chnaged my mind. He can play fake nerdy (Clark Kent) as well as smart, moral, and heroic (Superman's actual personality). He is also physically a match for the role. I say give him a shot. I don't think casting an unknown will work. As someone said earlier, Christopher Reeve was the find of a lifetime for the Donner films. Lightning rarely strikes twice. Go with Fraser. *****As far as Lois Lane goes, Selma Blair would be fine (and she IS fine, if you know what I mean), but I would have preferred to see Neve Campbell get the role (I think Harry hates Neve Campbell, but what does he know? I think she's hot, she looks the part, and she can play the smart and adventurous reporter Lois Lane..Lois Lane is actually not too far off from the role she played in the Scream movies: both a heroine and sometimes a target/victim). *****Also, someone mentioned Seth Green for Jimmy Olsen in another talkback. I think that this is a good idea. Seth Green is funny, and I think casting him as Olsen would be good for laughs. *****Anyway, casting doesn't mean much if you don't have a good director and a good script/story. Warners needs to get those elements in place too (and don't give me that JJ Abram's shit: that script sucked harder than a nuclear-powered vacuum cleaner...anyone remotely associated with that script needs to be shitcanned or sent to the mailroom..get a good script that doesn't say "fuck you" to the character and the fans!).

and of course a good script. Brendan Fraser or Tom Wellig (older version) should do just fine. The movie has to have soul and a lot of heart just like Superman himself. Blair is a good choice for Louis Lane. PLEASE WB, I BEG YOU...GET A DIRECTOR THAT CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!
