FF has become my favorite book ( followed closely by fables) thanks to Waid's run. It is the only book that i actually mind being such a quick read. 22pg's a month just doesn't cut it.! aw well,....the skethces for ultimate ff look aceptable. and i loved FF: 1,2,3,4., so if the new MK FF is heading in that direction i'll brobably have to add that to my pull.

Doc Mid-Nite has loads of Shadow style operatives in Portsmouth, including a great big dude called "Nite Lite" who owns the biggest fuckoff monster truck in town. Maybe he was waiting round the corner or something. ***** The Doctor Fate mini is a whole lot of nothing though. That Darwyn Cooke backup in JSA: All-Stars #whatever[4?] was much more Fate -Lovecraft style monsters and interdimensional fuckwads using people as lungs to breathe through when they're on Earth!
Iron man surprised by military use of his tech--WTF?!?!
by the G-man

The man was/is a MUNITIONS manufacturer for most of Marvel's history. His origin set him in Vietnam (or, later, an unnamed police action), where he was checking up on the use of his technology BY THE MILITARY. It was established WAAAY back in the 1960s that Tony supplied all the weapons and tech for the government-run spy agency SHIELD. There are countless stories of Tony meeting with military brass to win DEFENSE CONTRACTS. And now, he's SHOCKED-YES SHOCKED I TELL YOU-to learn the military used his technology to make weapons?!? Fuck Marvel and fuck it's politically correct modernist girlie man bullshit. It's one thing to write longstanding liberal characters as liberal or new characters as liberal. It's another to write longstanding right wing war profiteers as liberals. Can't they at least keep their characterizations consistent instead of bowing to the agenda of whatever trendoid writer has the character this week?

There are all these American comics shamelessly ripping off the Japanese style in an attempt to capatalize on their success in the bookstore market, but although they can superficially mimic manga they can't recapture their artistry or their success. The real American equivalent to the manga artists is Paul Pope - highly stylized without emulating anyone directly, all lips and long limbs, his comics look like nothing else on the American scene. He has similar appeal to female readers, and if it weren't for the timeliness factor I'd cite without reservation his ability to maintain these sci-fi/epic storylines and create whole worlds (just look at his martian landscapes, which instead of a pile of rocks looks more like the burnt top of a lemon meringue pie). If only the big shots could support originals like Pope instead of a stable of imitators.
No NYX review?

I've got to disagree with so much this week. Why no NYX review? Or is that next week? Decent characterization, stuff happens, and FANTASTIC artwork . . . . I actually think that 1602 works pretty well. You can argue that you should expect more from Gaiman, but the historical treatment is working better than any other Elseworlds/What If? story I've seen before. You can argue that it's too Fury-centric, but I'm dying to find out what (or who?) the weapon is. Maybe it's just me, but I'm getting a kick out of it . . . . Iron Man was a great start, but it all depends on where they go from here. IMO, Tony was suprised to learn that his technology was STILL being used for weapons, even though he stopped making weapons in the 80's. His attachment to the Bush administration means that maybe they're finally sorting out his politics. This book cries out for a Tom Clancy/superhero hybrid, and I'm hoping we get to see Stark in more of an international mode . . . . Ultimate Six has been GOOD, except for the art, which has been inconsistent. This book is really about the SIX (or is it FIVE?), not Spiderman or the Ultimates. The characterization (and the fairly subtle political issues involving incarceration of the villains) more than make of the lack of action in this case, IMO . . . .

Lettering is best when you don't notice it and I almost never do. I don't have a copy in front of me, so I don't know who's doing it (or WHAT'S doing it, more likely), but the lettering is AWFUL in this book.

Yes, this issue showed us no super hero/ super villian action. But it was still a good read. "ladies and gentlemen, this is spiderman" "did you travel back in time to get him?" that's just funny. problems with the art though, the way parker's teeth were drawn amke him look retarded.

Nobody wants to talk about NYX because it's a little too child porn for most people's taste. New X-men however was the best thing to come out this week. Morrison (and I mean this in a good way)is like a disgruntled employee that knows that he is losing his job and is going to cause as much damage and bring down as many people with him as he can.

I'm not a fan of Ultimate X-Men, and I'm even LESS of a fan of Spiderman (I have never found Spiderman funny, not in comics/cartoons/movies/televis ion, EVER). But he's hilarious in this. THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE SPIDERMAN. The plot could be better, and the Daredevil inclusion was unecesary. Read it for Spiderman.

Okay, major question here: above, they mention something akin to Marvel dropping Jemas? Did I misread it or did something of this magnitude actually happen? And, I came really close to picking up NYX but I passed - despite the fact that the artwork is gorgeous. How is it and what is it like? I also agree that the artist in Ultimate Six definitely needs to work on his Peter Parker. He rather resembled some kind of retarded man-child. And I really don't know if I like what Grant is doing in New X-Men with this arc. This is the first time where I've felt like he's lost me. The things he's doing right now are too huge and catastrophic...but they're not having an effect in ANY other Marvel book. I don't want to post any spoilers here...but if you destroyed Gotham City in the core Batman book, you'd expect something to at least be *mentioned* about it in Robin or Azrael (if that book is even still around). Oh well. I just hope Grant pulls it off in the end. I don't know if I even buy the whole twist (involving Xorn) that this story is built upon.

I hated the multi-colored lettering on Delirium's dialogue because after you strained to figure out what she said it was never worth the time and energy it took.. She was always saying annoying crap like "HaVe YOu SeEN mY DogGIE?" over and over. Gawd, I hate pretentious crap like that. Pretentiousness is 1,000 times worse when mixed with cuteness.

Which is enough to keep me onboard the title and generally have me happy his contract's been renewed. I'm with Towelie, though, in regards to Byrne's run being second only to the original Lee/Kirby grand slam, and readily outpacing Waid's work. Ranking third for me: the Walt Simonson run that Superninja mentioned. Whatta ride that was! Time-travelling, dinosaurs, Galactus eating the universe at the end of time, and lots and lots of laughs. Didn't hurt that he drew the whole thing, either =D Collect it, Marvel! My original issues are in decline because the cheap-ass ink you were using at the time has started to rub off on the opposite pages! BASTARDS!

Pope does have an original style, but his artwork isn't without fault. His characters from different stories tend to look similar, which could also be said about Risso, who is the greatest comic artist working today. Also, while he can tell a story both literally and graphically, I'm not conivinced that he can tell an interesting story.

I was always pissed off by the following characters, so have they been killed or temporally erased: Cable and Bishop. Also did they ever resolve Cable's identity, or was it a lame alternate universe thing, and Bishops first appearance had Gambit in the future but all other X-Men dead (he was some sort of traitor who killed them all or caused them to die), did they resolve that? Also could someone post the current book rosters for the teams, so I know if any are worth checking out with a team I would like? Thanks heaps.

Don't know about any resolutions about their pasts, but Bishop showed up a few issues ago to investigate the murder of Emma Frost, who is alive again(surprise!). Cable's series is Soldier X, although they're teaming him up for a new run with Deadpool who is alive again(surprise!)

I never actually read Wagner's mini, but in doing research for the review I read a lot online *about* it, and the thought occurred to me that he had someone to get his back. It also occured to me that maybe he just left his civilian clothes stashed away up on a roof somewhere. But whereas Batman is known for rappelling up and down roofs at night, how did Mid-Nite get up there in the first place? Elevator? Stairs? What?
I think Xandr37 makes some fair points about Pope's weaknesses..

I'm still a pretty devoted follower of Pope's stuff, but I must admit, the initial appeal is *always* in his visual aesthetics, and rarely in his stories. What is it they're lacking? Hard to pin down, but it almost seems like his approach is somewhat emotionless, just a little too self-consciously hip and distant to allow me to plug into his characters. His plots are bit murky, too, which is why it's ironic that I think his most approachable work is the semi-plotless character-piece, 100%, recently completed for Vertigo. The curious are gonna have a hard time catching up on THB for the reasons Alexandra outlined, but when 100% hits trade (as I assume will happen sometime next year), I highly recommend seeking it out. Had a slightly soft ending, yet was still one of my favorite reads of the last year. Here's the column where I reviewed an issue: http://www.aintitcool.com/disp lay.cgi?id=12762

C'mon, I thought this was the crowd that liked to talk politics about their men-in-tights. I want to know: is Tony Stark really a conservative or is that just an assumption we make because he's rich and made weapons when he was younger?

...and even though 100 BULLETS ain't for me, I have to admit, Risso's good, damn good; I wouldn't give anyone any guff for picking him as their fave. Me, I'm inclined to go with some of the artists who've been drawing CATWOMAN lately, namely Darwyn Cooke and Cameron Stewart. Holy shit, those guys blow me away. Also big on P. Craig Russell, Frank Quitely, and the tragically maligned Igor Kordey. Romita Jr. isn't always great, but when he's "on," he rates with the best of 'em. As for the realists - they don't give me as much of a tingle as the stylists, but among 'em, Butch Guice and Steve Epting are pretty great.

Last I heard, Bishop's over in X-treme X-Men. I think the whole Gambit-as-the-last-X-man thing was resolved in the craptacular Onslaught saga. Xavier was revealed as the traitor who would've killed the X-Men. Since that didn't happen, Bishop's future probably became officially AU. Cable is over in Weapon X now (again, I don't read it, so I don't know for sure). Cable turned out to be the true son of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor and, despite his claims, Stryfe turned out to be the clone. Of course, I could be wrong because A: it's been a long while since I've read anything about Cable by choice, and B: I doubt I cared much to begin with when I did read it. Currently there are three official teams of X-Men (not including X-Statix, Exiles, etc.) New X-Men: Beast, Cyclops, Jean Grey, the White Queen, Wolverine, and Xavier. Uncanny X-Men: Archangel, Havok, Husk, Iceman, Juggernaut, Nightcrawler, and Northstar. X-Treme X-Men: Bishop, Cannonball, Gambit, Rogue, Sage, and Storm I recommend New X-Men, but not if you're hardcore into old-school X-Men. Don't pick up any of the current issues, since you won't know what the f&ck is going on. Try the 'E is For Extinction' TPB if you want an idea of the current feel of the book and to start at the beginning. Uncanny blows goat, though the bits involving Juggernaut are good at times. The rest of the book is a goddam soap opera (and a bad one at that). I've only read a handful of X-Treme X-Men issues, and they suck, but not quite as bad as Uncanny. For info on the current rosters & characters, try www.uncannyxmen.net and for decent reviews of all the X-titles, try www.thexaxis.com. Hope this helps.
My problems with Igor Kordey
by Xandr37
Oct 18th, 2003
10:24:59 AM
As a comic artist he is great at telling the story and setting up some fantastic scenes, but my problems come from his finished product. His lines drive me crazy! His run on Xmen looked like he was using a wax pencil. And the clincher was when he had Emma Frost seducing Cyclops in what was supposed to be a sexy pose, but just turned out to be kind of hard to look at. Certainly I don't think all woman should be drawn in the style of Jim Lee or J. Scott Campbell, but it was just a little disturbing.
I'm glad this isn't turning into another comic book debate colum

I hate it when that happens. Anyway, as for the reason's behind Stark's actions in this issue, the government caught Tony off guard by revealing that since he revealed that he was Iron Man to the public and in the past, Stark always said that the guy in the armor was an unnamed bodyguard AND the fact that everyone now knows that that person didn't actually exist, the government found a legal loophole to use designs of his armor technology for the military. The problem is that the military scientists designed it on sight and the designs are inforior to Iron Man's actual armor and dangerous to the people who wear them in the military. So the govt tries to guilt TOny into becoming acontractor to supervise the blueprints and design of the armor so that it is safe. The government tries to boss Tony around, but no one bosses Tony around. After a meeting with Gee Dubbya, Tony flips the deck and becomes Secretary of Defense, so that he is the boss. I don't want to get too much into the politics, but given Iron Man's stance on the death penalty in the last Kree Srull War where a bunch of Avengers vote for the death penalty of the Supreme Intelligence and given the fact that in this issue, Tony meets and basically is granted a favor by Bush Jr., the guy seems more conservative to me, despite the recent "Ollie-liberalization" during Grell's run on the book. And by the way Spyguy, check the first page of HULK #62. Doc Samson is not only spelled with a "P" on the intro page, but it is spelled "Sampsom." So blame Marvel editorial, not me. Check it out yourself. Issue #62, page 1.
Corm - Tony Stark: Schwartzenegger Republican
by JonQuixote

Stark isn't (I guess I should say "shouldn't be") just a member of the Right because of his history of arms manufacturing (a gig which he inherited). Stark is right-leaning because of his understanding that the bottom line - not just fiscally, but it's a big part of it - is the Important thing. Stark would take a lesser moral good combined with a greater personal (for himself, his business, his employees) good, over a greater moral good, anyday. A recent (within the past 7 years) annual had Stark taking out AIM or something (greater good), but when confronted with MODOK's mind-control device, chose to use it to wipe out everybody on Earth's memory of his secret ID before destroying it (needless to say, Captain America: PISSED OFF!). But Stark justified this intrusion into people's minds by saying, believing it made him a more effective hero - which it did. Stark's not idealistic - he's pragmatic. He's certainly capitalist - and has used his 'gifts' to aggressively protect his personal interests in the past. The problem is that Stark, who got out of the munitions business, has a conscience. And too many people see "Conscience" and then think..."LIBERAL!" And while womanizing, hard-drinking playbody Stark is certainly more socially liberal than, say, Pat Buchanan, the pragmatic Stark would also support things like industrial tax breaks (the more effective my business, the more people I employ & lasers I can buy for my armor), and the morally suspect action in Iraq (take out a bad guy AND send my stock in Halliburton through the roof? What are we waiting for?).
