And Solaris was impressive in a way - it's not often you see a 90 minute movie which feels like its over 3 hours. Soderbergh is a fab director otherwise though, and the original is good, so this doesn't have to be bad. But I wanna see Ocean's 12! When can we expect it?

Steve Soderbergh is a fucking God, who actually has the balls to make ridiculous films that shouldn't (and occasionally don't) work, just because he is trying to challenge himself. I can't think of many other directors that straddle art-house and commercial boundaries this well. I don't think Solaris was ever really intended to be a box-office smash, and if it was then the studio was very naive. But Ocean's, Traffic and Out of Sight are some of the best films of the past five or so years. Give the guy a break.
Solaris was not meant to be a blockbuster,,,

This may be hard to believe but some people actually liked Solaris. (including me) And I respect Soderbergh for doing work that pleases him instead of trying to appeal to the masses. And it's weird seeing people use box office earings and popularity to validate the worth of something. Meanwhile. Movies, Television and Music are dominanted with nothing but crap. Crap that is both popular and profitable.
Another Remake?

I like Soderbergh as much as the next guy, but making so many remakes starts looking like the filmic equivalent of playing in a classic rock cover band. Write a script, already. What, "Full Frontal?" Oops, never mind.

I'm there. And Solaris rocks! At least Soderbergh refrained from putting in 7 minute long shots of a car driving with no dialogue.
I would rather two hours of sodomy than two more hours of Soderb

My impression of Steven Soderbergh: "Hi I'm Steven Soderbergh, I believe that every movie needs to be remade by ME, Steven Soderbergh, because I am goofy-looking pretentious ex-film student. I also donkey punch Jules Asner, but that's neither here nor there."

This is an excellent point Vector Matrix. It's makes sense for studio executives to judge the success of a movie by it's profitability because after all, they're selling widgets first and making art second. And while anyone's entitled to not like a particular movie , it is sad when something like Solaris, which is experimental AND requires a sizable budget to get made is greeted with contempt for being too ambitious and not falling into any obvious categories, even by supposed cineastes who should at least support the spirit of such an endeavor.
Steven Soderbergh needs to stop making damn remakes

TRAFFIC is an insult to the fantastic BBC miniseries. As a matter of fact, ALL remakes are insults to the people that labored on the original films/TV shows. I am glad that SCHIZOPOLIS is being given the Criterion treatment. and I think that SEX, LIES... is very overrated.
Was there a need to remake this?

The original film is fantastic, thanks mainly to the stylish direction, the performances of the leads, and (at least for me) the refreshing foreign setting. But there isn't really anything original about the story. They basically took HOUSE OF GAMES and set it in Buenos Aires. I'll check this movie out if the word on it is good, but having seen the original as well as the previously mentioned Mamet film, this remake doesn't seem to be breaking any new ground.

...and the winner is Section Eight!! Thank God for Clooney and Soderbergh's Section Eight. They are without a doubt creating MAJOR dents in Hollywood. Who else could go from producing a 50's style domestic drama ("Far From Heaven") to a star studded heist comedy remake that ran circles around the original ("Ocean's Eleven")? I for one am eagerly awaiting "Criminal"
