Speaking as someone who loves the old Gerry Anderson puppet shows, I thought the idea of doing a live action THUNDERBIRDS was waaaaaaay overdue. I mean, come on, you sit down and look at all the "high concept" component parts that make up the property and it's a studio's marketing wet dream -- not to mention all the backend merchandise that could spring from it adding even more money to the bank. So producing a live action version makes a helluva lot of sense to me. I didn't mind the choice of Frakes since I think he's shown he's got a good director's eye (his Next Gen episodes and FIRST CONTACT.) Plus, the casting so far has been solid and the pictures of Lady Penelope's car rocked. From all appearances it seems Frakes is going for a fun "retro" feel. I just hope the actual Thunderbird SHIPS don't disappoint since they'll be a key thing in selling this. However as to this latest "fey" picture, this is the first miscue I've seen so far. What's with the light metallic suits and defining red trim? These outfits look like they're straight out of Gerry Anderson's live action shows -- like rejects when he was making UFO or SPACE 1999. I realize Hollywood is generally caught up on the X-men era of leather or body molded suits...I don't think you had to go THAT route in giving the Thunderbirds matching outfits...but these silver suits look whacked. A variant on the blue tunics that the puppets wore in the show would've been a helluva lot better and more dynamic than these outfits -- they just look wimpy and...well, fey. Well, I'll just keep my fingers crossed that the movie is good and Bill Paxton doesn't turn out to be Barry Bostwick in MEGAFORCE 2...

1.) I hope Bill Paxton is getting A LOT of dough for doing this. 2.) No ascots. 3.) Wrong color uniform and no hats. 4.) Lady Penelope's car not a Rolls Royce and impractical to drive(Four front wheels and two rear, yeah right. Study your engineering. It doesn't work.) 5.) The cast looks nothing like the characters. 6.) I hope Gerry Anderson got A LOT of dough for this. 7.) Some tv shows are best left alone and remembered for what they were.

Well after all the flaming this forum has enjoyed over the past week - criticisms regarding reviewing scripts and preproduction downloaded movies, we now have the great 'experts' reviewing a film based on a single (unofficial?) publicity shot! Well done, y'all. Once again demonstrating the collective IQ of these Talkbackers is less than one of the original Thunderbirds puppets. Sure, the photo is lame as hell, but so what? Does that mean the movie will suck? The Thunderbirds movie may well be the biggest turd of the year, but not because of one daft publicity pic. I read the AICN Talkback tributes to Gregory Peck earlier and was incredibly moved by the mature sentiments expressed there. I also wondered where the hell the assholes who usually contribute where - I know now that they were hiding in the Thunderbirds Talkback.

Let's be honest, kids. Thunderbirds was cheesy as all hell. I've seen a couple clips. If you're going to produce a movie that is "true" to the spirit of the source material then you're going to get a cheesy as all hell movie. It's that simple. It's like taking a show that was always pretty goofy like Scooby-Doo and expecting it to be a cool movie. Scooby-Doo will never be cool. Scooby-Doo was never meant to be cool. Neither were the Thunderbirds. Sorry to snap you out of your childhood revelry, kids, but it's time to face facts. Coolness in = coolness out (i.e. the first Matrix and X-2). Cheese in = cheese out (see Scooby and the T-Birds for details). It's just like taking Speed Racer and making a movie that keeps the same tone and spirit s the cartoons; it's gonna suck as a movie because it'll be too damn cheesy and cornball to get into. (now MY take on Speed Racer, on the other hand would kick ass... same with my spin on Inspector Gadget - think Virtuosity meets the Terminator films). Just my take on it. -- SPYder, out.

as a member of the queer community, I find the tone of this article to be quite offensive. Come on, Harry. When maintaining a respectable news site it's really... not that great to go around gay-bashing. Even if you didn't intend it to be so, the 'FEY FEY FEY' thing, really, is pretty offensive. Not only that, but the fact that you opened this door for the talkbackers to take the gay thing and, like they do, rampantly make fun of gay people, speaks a lot. I request that, as a decent human being, you take the article down, or at the very least do something to amend the situation. If nothing else, work to censor the posts that are blatantly homophobic? A hate crime is a hate crime even when spoken and even when issued toward a nonspecific recipient. How would you react if you posted something about Richard Roundtree and someone brought the n-word into the discussion? Anyway, thanks. You won't see me around here again. I only registered because I was offended. When homophobia comes from the talkbacks it's certainly one thing, because the talkbackers are often brazen, loudmouthed and frequently taking advantage of the fact that the internet provides a mask, behind which anything can be said. But you? I respected you more before I saw this post. Please, next time you consider posting such an article, saying it in such a way, you think of how your decisions hurt people who trust you and thank you for maintaining such an upstanding webpage.

Ironic - the Americans were always worried that the theme of having a group of single guys living on an island might be misinterpreted, so the studio held up the project for years. I guess they must have noticed Queer Eye and Sponge Bob and gone to the other extreme. Memo to Bill Paxon: John Tracy never wore a uniform in the show.
