I'm with you on wanting to be optimistic, Mori, but throwing around words like "original" and "new" and "visionary" over what could still just be another rank Godzilla '98 CG version of giant monsters destroying a city is like pissing into the wind. Like I said, it helps to be optimistic. You know anime fans will NOT like this, no matter what happens and no matter how much hype goes into it. They like it that their show was not mainstream. I dare say part of the appeal of Neon Genesis is that it IS a pretentious mind fuck, so we'll see how this one goes. Will Asuka actually sound German now? And will the kids be 13/14 or will they be aged up a bit so as not to be so, you know, socially unacceptable with all that sexuality and violence?

I own a company that has a wholesale account with Sideshow Toys, the U.S. distributor of the WETA line of LOTR statues and paraphenalia - and let me tell you, most of them aren't that great. The sculptors don't do a very good job of capturing the facial likenesses of the actors, but, to be fair, they kick ass with the monsters, armor & weaponry. The people at Sideshow have told me numerous times that they're VERY disappointed that the LOTR line hasn't sold better, but the overall quality just isn't there. WETA is a great company, to be sure, but they're not infallible - they sure screwed the pooch with the majority of the LOTR line.

If they maintain the mature philosophical ideals of the anime, it may be a failure with the US audience...if they remove those aspects, fans of the anime will be pissed for them leaving out such an important aspect. Can't win for losing if they do manage to pull if off.

Besides evangelion was a long drawn out story how the hell are they going to incorperate it into one movie. Evangeleon was a poor underfunded anime (see the animation) that crept up its own arse by its conclusion (if that was what it was!)Id rather see a FLCL movie as that kicks ass. Great production pictures though! Anime/Manga I would like to see as live action movies:- NAUSICAA (make it a trilogy Based off the comic not miyazaki own 'lite' version) BUBBLEGUM CRISIS (the original 80s version not the recent ones ...make it brutal and dark! And let priss die!) NARUTO it would be bonkers! GUNNM also known as battle angel alita...hopefully on its way! APPLESEED hell yeah!! DOMINION ... URUSEI YATSURA! Ahem! I go now.....

Evangelion has been done to DEATH, and rebirthed, and Ended, and then it crawl out of the sea and choked itself and ENOUGH ALL READY! No way, one movie could capture it, no way. And I vote no to the Bubblegum Crisis 2032. 2040 *is* much better! But that is still the same problem - it is 26 episodes and I want to give up nothing! Nothing, I said. What it needs is a 15-film series of three hours each.. With life long commitments from the actors and crew. They may have to be genetically engineered. Hey, a movie about making this movie would be cool! Maybe it would be appreciated more than the "Truman Show" I love Nene!

I'm all for keeping the ethnicities intact, but I suspect the whole thing will be relocated to America with white (with possibly a token black, probably playing Kenji) twenty somethings playing all the major parts. Can't you just see them casting Frankie Muniz as Shinji and renaming him Shawn or something? Sure, I'm kidding, but do you seriously expect an American studio(ie American bean counters who care more about domestic grosses) to make a big budget SF movie about a battle at the end of the world where the heroes come from Germany and Japan, our *enemies* in World War 2? Well I don't, especially after reading the troubles Orson Scott Card had with "Ender's Game."
Eva is not a space epic!
by crozz

Evangelion is not a space epic. Its has to do with God, the end of the world, and man quest to evolve into something on the same level of God. The is no kids story or stupid brainless sci-fi fodder. This is the most inteligent and complex story to come out of anime since Akira. I don't think that most casual movie goers or sci-fi fan boys will understand Eva. Heck, a lot of Anime fans still dont get it. I trully wish this movie be made, but dubt it can be made, yet. The general public(where most movies make there money) will not get it at all and studio execs sherly wont understand it. So the only way to make this movie(at this moment in time) is to chop it up and spit it out. Eva is to good for that. The only way I see this being made is if it is done in three movies and Hideki Anno directs, and casts it himself. But even then I dont think you will ever get the same emotional impact as the anime. Im sure they make CG Evangelions(the giant robots) but the story never was about the robots or the huge fights. Eva was about the characters and their downward spiral out of inocence. It was about the sexual angist of a thirteen year old boy, and his search for priase from his farther and acseptance by his friends and coleges.I trully hope this wonderful story does not get turned into CG shit with no story or character development.

Evangelion takes place almost completely within a very modern looking Japanese city. I have no doubt WETA could pull off the effects. I don't think anyone is worried about the effects. I just worry about everything else. I hope GAINAX keeps a pretty tight grip on tis film. I would hate to see it show a lot of potential, only to be ruined by gutless execs with no artistic vision at all.

Corrections on Eva, Anime, and the history of Anime in Japan and
by Serenanna

As self proclaimed anime goddess and all around Japanese expert, I feel the need to do some explaining here in relevance to Evangelion and its history in anime in both the US and Japan. First off, the BS WETA and ADV, Eva's US distributors, have been pushing is wrong. It is sci fi based, but takes place entirely on earth, so it's not a space epic at all, but a strictly sci-fi epic. The enemy isn't aliens. No one knows what the hell they are, and the series evenn doesn't explain it anyway, they are simply known as Angels. Shin Seiki Evangelion, known as Neon Genisis Evangelion, is produced by Gainax, a leading anime production studio known for unusual anime like FLCL, Kare Kano, and Nadia: Secret of Blue Water, and debuted on Japanese television on Yom Kippur in Octorber 1996, and has been infamous ever since. Without giving out the plot, which is high ambiguous near the end anyway, episodes 18 and 19 of the 24 episode series is what really set it apart at the time because of it's unprecidented level of gore for primetime TV. That you'd have to see the series to find out about. There was as a sexyness to the whole production that wasn't seen very often outside of feature-lenght anime. Not to mention the plot has enough biblical references and Feurdian concepts to make bible-thumps and psycho anaylists alike either take notice, or get very pissed about. Add in the Dead Sea Scrolls, mysterious corprations, the destruction of one third of the earth in something call the Second Impact, the end of the world in something called the Third Impact, complex relationships among a bunch of teens trying to stop it and the adults running the show, an underground forest/base, giant robots that aren't what they appear, a very (and I do mean VERY) open ending, and oh yes, the mascot, Penpen the penguin, and you get an anime epic run amock. All of this gives Eva a highly ambiguous message and plot that is open to many interpretations, and has been a subject of debate among otaku in both countries for a very long time. Other than the series, two movies were produced to try and finish the series off, Evangelion: Death and Rebirth, and End of Evangelion. If debate over the series is bad, End of Eva is even worse. Two men are responsible for this series, the writer of the manga series, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, and the director/writer of the anime, Anno Hideaki. The manga series is based off of the anime, and is still being produced since the debut, but it is pushing a different take on the plot and trying to make it more coherent than the anime version. If you want to blame Eva's ambiguity on someone, blame Anno Hideaki. He is either a genius or certifiably insane, which is probably true since there's rumors that he's had a mental breakdown during production of the end of the series and the movies, which the studio pressured him into doing. Eva is also highly popular in the US for not being on TV at all, and is consider the banner series by some, or vastly over-rated by others. You love it, or you hate it, you just don't get, or you think you do and then talk to your best anime-watching friend and find out that you don't. I reccomend that anyone interested in this movie see the series first and then pass judgement before writing it off.

Asuka & Unit-00 have some very detailed makeovers, much like watching the Escaflowne series, and then watching the movie translation. Evangelion was very cool, but the ending(s) could have been handled better. Also, it was AICN that thought this was a Spcae Epic, not WETA or ADV. Anyone who calls themselves a "goddess" and then goes on and on about info that can be found anywhere, really needs to reevaluate their entire life.

Not all of that information was looked up or readily availble on websites, and half of it wasn't off the top of my head either. I'm not an idiot, drooling fangirl, and anyone that has to criticize something they can't do themselves is even sadder. I'm merely educating the masses that pass through here, nothing more.

"'Neon Genesis Evangelion' is the story of a reluctant young hero, called upon to pilot an immense robotic weapon in battle against alien invaders." This was the press release from a few weeks ago, and the exact wording on not just AICN, but other anime news sites. And yet, I was wrong, 26 episodes, but no one's perfect and it's not like the last two episodes make complete sense anyway. For people still wondering about Newtype, it's one of the Japanese anime magezines and is legit as far as getting pics and previews. Some pics are created exclusively for their issues as well. There is a US english version put out but the japanes and english issues are not really related to one another.

Writer? Director?

As fantastic as these images are, and the very thought of WETA doing giant robots, I have a VERY hard time getting too excited about the proposed movie when they (appearantly) dont have a writer or director! We have production paintings and they've probably already done animation tests, but the script? the Director? I find it usually a bad idea to start pre-production/development without a script and I feel a director should ALWAYS be involved in the genesis (pun intended) of any movie project especially one like this. So far we have a corporation who has decided to make a 'product', then bring the 'creative' team in later...I know this happens a lot in Hollywood, and the results are usually dissapointing. Was this not mentioned last year during San Diego Comic Con as a James Cameron project?

I get really annoyed when people see I have the Evangelion box and assume I'm an anime fan, and launch into some conversation about stupid derivative cliched series which truly HAVE been done to death a thousand times, and which they've SEEN the previous examples of and yet are conviced that they're groundbreakingly original, or at least of significant enough quality to be worthy of wasting MY preciously limited brainpower. And as PROOF that they don't get it, look at the millions upon millions of comparisons people have made, claiming such and such series is "like Evangelion" just because it has giant robots piloted by children/teenagers, perhaps with some relation to the creator. (Ignoring both the fact that that concept was decades old when Evangelion did it, AND the fact that THAT IS NOT THE FUCKING POINT) And don't get me started on the flaws of the anime fans themselves (as opposed to the fucking sewage that pours from their food-holes)...the only reason anime fans can get laid is that their ranks have grown to the point where they can find mates among their own.

Frankly, I hope hollywood doesnt stay faithful to the anime. Dont look at me like that. =p those who enjoy evangelion because of all the angsty stuff Anno put in, all the metaphors for how stuff sucked for him, and all the psycho babble, you guys already have the anime ending, and the animated movies. and for you guys, those are apparently a good enough ending. Not everybody came to EVA cause it looked like a fun romp through a psych text book and a bible. Some of us saw the giant robots, and liked them (yes, i know theyre not REALLY robots, but i didnt know that when i started.) some of us want some real closure to the series. this movie, could offer that very closure. its rather likely that it'll be turned into more of an action flick than a thinking picture. and i think thats good. i mean, whats wrong with the tale of a few children piloting giant biomechanical weapons against monsters, to stave off the apocalypse?
Ribbons: something about the franchise
by Andy_Christ

09:48:47 PM
It's about a kid who is depressive and anti-social, who has been rejected in one way or another most of his life, looking for approval and acceptance. The ending of the original TV series is him finally getting it. The giant robots are just attractive ornaments, and the whole kaballistic backstory is just a plot device to get from point A to point B. The movies are about the director pining for one of the voice actresses. The most similar anime series (or anything else, for that matter) of which I am aware is Berserk, not any of the several dozen or so giant robot shows Evangelion has inspired since. Because NO ONE GETS IT.
How the hell would they end this thing?
by Lizzybeth
Jun 9th, 2003
10:00:12 PM
They'd have two endings to choose from (or two aspects of one ending, choose your own controversy), neither of which made a blessed bit of sense. Sure, they could try to actually wrap things up and explain what happened, but that would almost take the fun out of it.. and how on earth would they handle the religious imagery - I mean, they're basically doing the book of Revelations with robots, how would they fund this thing? I dunno, I don't see why they need to make a live-action movie and I doubt they could do it. As was mentioned above, Orson Scott Card can't even get Ender's Game to the screen and that's a much, much simpler premise. Also, they'd need someone really mentally unbalanced to do a proper Eva interpretation, and I don't think PJ is the man for the job.

Ok. . . So I guess it is going to happen, cat suits and all. My powers of prophasy are indeed wavering. . . So how old are the actors going to be. It doesn't look like they designed that suit for a fourteen year old. Also, the sets look a little too cold. NERV was never that cold looking a place. It looked more, antiseptic. Like a hospital made out of metle. And the city looked way too much like Gothum. The point of the submerged city was that it was just a city that got submerged. Like a person who falls under depreshion. Their still a person, their just depressed. This seems to totally miss the emotional resonence of the image. I'm. . . just too confused. What would posses them to even feel the need to make this movie. It is best as it is. A scathing look inside the onion of Japanese culture. It lacks resonance when taken away from that. Anyway. . . You don't make a fucking live action film of Neon Genesis - the original was perfect just as it was. the special effects in live action films look creaky and ridiculous after a very short space of time - the most recent star wars films being an excellent case in point. The beauty of animation is that you don't have to waste millions on CGI effects that will look like shit in six months' time. The original Neon Genesis will still look beautiful in years to come - a live action Hollywood version will make a mockery of the whole thing. LEAVE SHINJI THE FUCK ALONE, BITCHES!!

And I also agree that something this Japanese should include Japanese actors, so how would Jake be in there you ask? Well since this is a collaboration of Japan and America, Gendou (who acts American in the first place) should be American. Yui (Shinji's mom) should be Japanese (the chick from Ringu) that would make Rei Japanese and Shinji, the main character a mix of races, much like the movie. And Auska needs to be the hottest young girl on the face of the planet. As you can see I've given this some thought. I have my doubts on whether or not this is a good idea. I'm a big Eva fan and don't think any film company can do it justice. And for those of you who think it needed a better ending, what better ending can you have with the new beggining of the human race, the new Adam and Eve. But i digress. On this poster it had cast!! Im not entirely sure hhow good the info is, but the possible line up is....Al Pacino as Gendo....Gillian Anderson ans Ritsiko..(so far not too bad, if a bit americanised)....Sarah Michelle Geller as Asuka....Jennifer Conelly as Rei...and Keanu Reeves as Shinji. The best (or worst though) is Liz Hurley as Misato. Hmmmm. It says directed bt John Woo, effects by Industrial Light & Magic and it will be a Fox Film. How much of this is true i don't know, we'll see. If you want to judge for yourself i managed to find the image on google image search, just type Evangelion.
The Press Release

http://www.evamonkey.com/writi ngs_adv2.php A website named 'Eva Monkey' has posted the above press release by ADV films (a member of Eva Monkey participated in the commentary of the 'Death and Rebirth' DVD). This press release concerns the planned production of the live action Evangelion movie, which is being made in conjunction with ADV Films, Gainax, and WETA. They have clearly stated that they will be hiring a muli-national cast (for example, Ristuko may be European). They have also clearly stated that Hideaki will be purely advisory. He won't be making everyone work as thought they were making an Anime. He understands that live action is different from anime, and so, will be leaving the live action work to the experienced individuals. Those people who are concerned about a 'crappy' film being made, please stop worrying. WETA was founded in 1987 by four people. One of these people was Peter Jackson. Peter Jackon did a good job of directing Lord of the Rings. As such, I beleive that WETA may actually be able to do good job with the Eva film. Also, there is no further confirmed information regarding Evangelion. Stress less. Wait until we at least find out who will be directing, who will be writing, and who will be acting in the film.

I was searching for that NGE poster that Tranquil Locust had mentioned, an I've seem to have found something at: http://mash.100freemb.com/evan gelion.gif I don't know, but that pic. of Keanu looks like it's straight out of one of the Matrix movies.

Regardless to some, if you constantly bitch about something, such as this, movie execs consider it hype. Has anyone seen Jay and Silent Bob strike back, the hole discussion with holden and Jay is true. SOme of you want to see it, others dont regardless you are helping them make the movie. AND since they see this as a franchise you know deep down in your little biddy hearts that you will go and see opening day dressed up like Shinji and PenPen. Personally I want to see it, although if Keanu and Haley Joel Osmet even think about steooing up into roles like this. I will personally hunt them down and kill them. Hell Keanu has already fucked up one good series this year (Imust be one of the few people on the net that didnt like the Matrix sequels) which by the way Matrix 3 proved to me that a live action Dragonball movie could work. ~The shopkeeper and his son were a different story altogether...I had to beat them to death with their own shoes~
Weta's in New Zealand

Weta is in New Zealand, not the US... ADV may be in the US, but they're only 1/3 of the development team, the other two are in Japan and New Zealand... And, what makes you think it has to be dumbed down? We know NOTHING about the story of the movie and what portions of the story of the show/manga are going to be used in the Live Action production... Looks like America doesn't have a monopoly on ignorance... Stupid trolls aside, I am looking forward to this, but not expecting much... I learned from Final Fantasy to think like that to see how it will turn out with curiosity, but not to set my expectations too high...

In reguards to BV's message: I haven't seen any anime besides Evangelion, but i know that the eva series had a definate plot and character development. I think the only reason you dislike/dont understand the series is because you are ignorant to the plotline and underlying messages that Hideaki Anno created. Take some time with the series and use your brain before whining please. (Yes...in all likely-hood the movie will suck...because it will be watered down for the stupidity of the average person...such as yourself.)

ok eva technically isn't a space flick unless you count the 2nd never released eva series which they would've gone into space ( the eva's where re configured so they could phisically do that) and then your stuck with stupid shinji and then his stupid twin look alike girl friend mana but that is a whole nother rant. Anyway the eva series isn't space unless you count rei and her angel form destroying the world phase thing at which point she is so huge she goes into space in a way but really no space is involved. And I saw one artical once saying it was all japanese then in an American mag. I see all english actors ( that looked nothing like the characters) and one japanese actor as possible ones playing and guess who the lonely japanese actor was playing? Rei ! How the hell can you have freaking Rei be japanese but her 1/2 brother being 100% english, her dad english, and her mom freaking english!? If rei is japanese then shinji, gendo, and yu have to be freaking japanese when I saw that big article all my hopes of this being a good movie or at least better then gundadm G were dashed and also the location would no longer be japan it would be a stupid u.s. site and all that bull. I mean is keeping a japanese cast really that damn hard to do?! I mean what ritsuko, asuka, kaji, and maybe even maya and gendo's assistant ( can't remmber his name right now) and even a boat load of extras could all be played with english actors that I could live with but at least shinji his sister and his family have to be japanese and it all has to be located in japan! It's bad enough the eva's are more like skeletons ( though a nice idea they aren't metal they look like they'd be so easily torn apart) And I don't think they should have lee way on the plot I mean look what happened to final fantasy spirits within. It got so damn bad and pissed all the fans off and those who saw it and weren't ff fans didn't get it anyway. I mean it looked pretty, I loved the idea of a main character being a girl in ff but that was about it. Thank goodness they're actually re correcting their error and begging for forgiveness with the released and the 1st ff movie that has to deal with the ff franchise by redeeming themselves and making ff7 advent children! But Please don't make eva a ff spirits with in shit hole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One 1 -2 hr long movie could not tackle the insanity, intensity, and controversial thing that is eva and I'm sure they won't even try afraid of offending everyone who watches it because eva is not just robots maned by humans fighting unearthly beings its so much more it tramples and questions evey faset of life, love, and religion shaking it and twisting it a single few hr movie couldn't work and you need all those elements to transfer from manga and anime to the live film not just do the characters have to be japanese their acting must be perfect ( beliveable and true to their character's feelings and backgrounds) but they must bring over those controversial topics of love, death, life, faith, and morals over I mean only a series of 3 or more hrs of film will even do this series the justice it needs and they need to not be afraid to offend or trample on peoples emotions, convictions, or religious ferber because that is what makes eva so great and why it countinues to be debated today years after it's release. People still are trying to solve that riddle that is eva trying to find it's core what is eva? You can't take that away by making a politically correct film. It just won't work.
