Yeah but...

If they take the story out of feudal Japan, isn't it just another story LIKE Lone Wolf and Cub? I mean it's not that particular story anymore. What I love is THAT world. I will never get to see that particular time period with my own eyes. That's what the movies let me do. I get to see a world that doesn't exist anymore. I can look out the window and see today's world. I just think it will be a shame to update it, that's all.

If there's a good original, and a good recent reworking, why bother with another version? I don't get it. And I totally agree, President Evil, on his track record - nothing to get excited about here. As for Dark Knight Returns, I for one don't expect to see it any time soon - Watchmen is far more likely, and that's on the far side of never gonna happen.

"contemporize" this

Hopefully they mean "contemporize" as more of a stylistic thing ... but I doubt it. By the way, Requiem for a Dream was hypnotic -- and so damn disturbing that I will never watch it again (kind of like the ear-cutting scene in Reservoir Dogs but stretched out for two hours). Pi was a ludicrous, poorly acted, benignly pretentious piece of pseudointellectual fluff -- it was as believable as Electric Dreams (or whatever that "earthquake-proof brick" piece of shit was). It was an OKAY movie. It was not great by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't know much about graphic novels but I have seen the graphic novel created here in the states called road to perdition. I even saw a show about the transfer from that graphic novel to the movie. I don't know what harry is on, but I do believe that he is not right.

"However, I'd say most Americans are most familiar with LONE WOLF & CUB through the Sam Mendes directed adaptation of Max Allan Collins' gangster version of Kazuo Koike's original Samurai epic with ROAD TO PERDITION. " Dude, what more could Harry have said to explain it - the grpahic you refer to was a contemporized version of LONE WOLF AND CUB. And it was fine.

good as the film series is, it can't possibly match the original manga -- let's not leave goseki kojima's contribution's unnoticed. frank miller's _ronin_ is basically kojima meets moebius. and, as to this contemporizing kick -- how can they? so much of itto's traveling the path of demons was the complex social order and bushi honor that pervaded edo-era japan. otherwise, it IS _cop and a half_. also, what is up with the _requiem_ = garbage booshit? it's as accomplished as it is deeply felt. back off on darren, at least until this misguided effort sees th light of day. memo to d.a. -- you'll save yourself alot of trouble and bad reviews if you take these rights you've secured and make an animated series out of _lone wolf_.

RECENTLY, THE US MOVIE INDUSTRY HAS BEEN SO BEEN SO DEVOID OF ORIGINAL IDEAS THAT THEY SEE FIT TO REMAKE ANYTHING THAT THEY CAN GET THEIR GRUBBY LITTLE HANDS ON, RAPE THE THING, FUCK IT UP ENTIRELY, RAM IT DOWN PEOPLE'S THROATS AND FOREVER SULLY THE REPUTATION THAT THE ORIGINAL MATERIAL HAD. BOLLOCKS TO YOU, YOU CORPORATE SCUMBAGS.

..."who cares about this dreamer?" This is not the super exciting stuff we were promised from Arnofsky. I remember the buzz in NY when PI first came out. And it wasn't all undeserved. Requiem was powerfully disturbing. All the other projects sounded like they had so much promise. This sounds like it might be "safe" enough to get some money behind it.

THEY ARE UPDATING LONE WOLF AS A WESTERN-SERGIO LEONE STYLE, KEEPING INTACT THE SAMURAI SPIRIT OF THE ORIGINAL COMICS AND FILMS, BUT WITH A WANDERING ASSASSIN/GUNSLINGER AND HIS YOUNG SON....WHICH SOUNDS VERY COOL. AND KAZUO KOIKE IS SUPPORTIVE OF THIS APPROACH. SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT ROLE FOR RUSSELL CROWE...

This remake won't touch the original movie/TV adapations if on the basis that I doubt they'll even be as highly violent/sexual as the manga is, they would probably have to be NC-17 to be done right and we all know that ain't gonna happen. Probably will have a rap/rock soundtrack too. *** Also I agree, Harry should be getting the R1 Animegio DVDs and chuck those R3 versions. Get with the DVD geek program already!

Why don't American directors get 'it'? The Japanese kick the Americans collective butts into touch when it comes to imaginative, original thinking. Even New Zealand manages that particular feat.
I think Aronofksy is a great director, though I am still unsure

I believe that even though he has only directed a couple of films, Aronofsy is more than qualified as one of the best new helmers there is. It only took PT Anderson 2 flicks to get a huge fanbase, and I think they are on the same level. As far as lone wolf goes, it would be better to do an actual adaptation then a contemporization, as there are several of those already. While I am very interested in seeing how Aronofsky would do it, I think it would make more sense to do one set in japan, as many people have yet to see the legendary baby cart saga, myself unfortunately included. Still, it is daigoro, not sugito. Just thought it beared repeating.
Maybe.....this could be good.

Let's face the music folks, Pi was decent for a low buget flick, Requiem for a Dream was good...it was not "OH MY GOD THIS IS THE BEST FUCKING MOVIE SINCE 81/2!!!" Aronofsky is moving into new territory for him and this venture could prove either very successful or very deadly. If he sticks to the basics of what made Lone Wolf great, I think it should be fine. If he starts going off track too far though, I have a feeling it's going to be quite a let down. Anyway just my humble opinion. But personally, I would love to see him make a completly faithful adaptation of the Sin City books. Oh what an exploitation movie that would be! And his visual flair would match perfect.

Didn't Aronofsky grab the rights for Theodore Roszak's "Flicker" earlier this year? He would be the perfect director for it - if he'd just get off of his ass and make a decision!
