In the UK so not seen any of the shows, just wanted to have a go at posting first. Also met Michael Shanks at a sci-fi convention yesterday (nred me!) and he was yummy and really sweet. Kendra from Buffy was also there and a nice lady, also so so little in person. She turned up at the after party for the non-VIPs and chatted with normal people (so did Chekov from Star Stek - he even had a boogie).

I just don't get it. Even on the weeks when there are no sports on Fox they show a rerun of King of the Hill or the Simpsons instead of Futurama. Have they shown more than one episode this season?

Anyway. Take the title from above/below/wherever the hell the talkback put it. Damn return key. Anyway, I don't think herc should ever be allowed to review TV again. First he slams 24 by giving it marginal reviews. Then he gives that complete shit pile known as SNL a constant *** rating. Now he thinks that King of the Hill is the best thing on Sunday nights? I don't know where he got his crack, but that stuff must be really potent.

Fucking Classic Simpsons!!! And the Sea Captain saying lets sing a song and not some war song like our national anthem - another Gem!. This show still has it.

Simpsons is improving, Let's see what happens in the next season. It seemed for a while the writer's were all left wing nut cases. Now there seems to be more balance in the show.

These days defenders of the Simpsons have been reduced to pointing to the odd good episode in the middle of the miserably mediocre crapfest that has become the typical Simpsons season. Hasn't 14 years of Simpsons been enough - especially when you consider only seven of those seasons were the classic years everyone loves? These days the Simpsons is full of episodes that are at best derivative, and at worst painful (Homer gatting raped by a panda? Santa's Little Helper becoming a beer mascot? Barney going sober?). Watching the show these days is like watching a once-vital friend reduced to a drooling acephalitic kept alive in an iron lung. Please, whoever's out there... let the Simpsons die.

In that episode he has the line "I'm reeking of panda love", or something close to that. How's THAT weak? Simpsons is still wittier than any other show on the air, animated or otherwise. And they have the balls to make currently unpopular political jokes and statements, and seem to get away with it, unlike, oh, say the Dixie Chicks. Then again, the fanbase of the Simpsons is probably predominately liberal, as opposed to country music fans.

And yes, King of the Hill is definitely the best of the bunch. It's really nice to see a cartoon where the humor is grounded in the characters and their relationships to each other and not just being as absurdist as possible, whilst throwing in as many pop-culture references as the half-hour format will allow for. Yes, it's much more conventional than Simpsons or South Park or Family Guy, cartoons, but it seems to be the more daring choice given the way television is right now. It just seems like that show works a lot harder for its laughs.

Just to correct something here - Ashcroft and Company are indeed grabbing legal Arab-American citizens. The most recent and notorious case being Mike Hawash, an Intel worker who's currently being held in solitary confinement as a "material witness." Like many being held under the Patriot Act, Hawash has not been charged with a crime, has not been allowed to see a lawyer, has not been read rights, has been held for a month and a half without being questioned. All of this is legal under the new laws and powers granted to our government. ------------ Now, comparisons to Hitler are a tad extreme - as they always are - but one comparison you can certainly make is that both the Weimar Republic and post-9/11 America were atmospheres in which increasing levels of fear and nationalism lead to a never-before-seen increase in executive power and a creeping hostility towards dissent. The United States is obviously not a fascist state. But Germany didn't become fascist overnight, either. Not trying to be alarmist. But it's a cautionary tale. Those who would sacrifice liberty for security seldom end up with either.

Which means that a grand jury found probable cause that he was guilty of "conspiracy to wage war against the United States and conspiracy to provide material support to al-Qaida and the Taliban." I realize that this does not mean he is guilty. However, it does mean that his case is really no different than most criminal defendants before and after 9/11. It is a longstanding practice in the law that a felony defendant can be held for months if there is probable cause that he committed a crime. Its true for murder defendants (ex: O.J. Simpson, Robert Blake) and its true for other forms of felonies. This is not something new created by the Bush administration. It's as old as the Magna Carta.
