Flirting with the ladies, Rocking the slang ... Vince Vaughn is KILLING !! I don't know how much longer Dave will be out (not too long, we hope) but if he wants to pull off the late night coup of the decade, call in a favor from Johnny Carson ... Have him fly the desk for a night !

Remember back in the good ole days (well, no probably most of your weren't even born back then but I do) when Johnny (Carson) used to take off every Monday and he had the regular habit of having guest hosts sit in? I know the ratings usually sucked when he was off but it gave lots and lots of great new talent (Bill Cosby, Jerry Seinfeld, even Letterman himself) opportunities to host a national show long before they got shows of their own). So I wish there were more opportunities like this (*besides just when hosts get horribly sick)

I'm a fan of Vince Vaughn and hoping he becomes a bigger star soon (when, of course, I'll start hating him.) But if the movies don't work out, he's got the confidence and charisma to fly the desk, bigtime. He'd make a better host than Chevy Chase did. Carson had guest hosts all the time, but Letterman and Leno, locked in paranoid battle, refused...until Letterman started having his health problems (which I guess means Leno has won the physical battle.) I think it would be great if Letterman and Leno relaxed and let some other show biz people guest host in the future. Bring on Will.

Jesus, who needs drugs? Marking the calendar, programming the VCR.... This hit-or-miss guest-host-for-a-day program the producers stumbled on just might be the most inspired thing I've seen on television in decades, seriously. BUT here's hoping you get well soon, Dave. "Rickets"? Seriously? Isn't that something Abe Simpson would have a home rememdy for? Certainly hope it doesn't the rickets complicate into "dropsy" or "consumption" or "the vapors"...

I had the pleasure of seeing it when it was first broadcast back in '87. The Letterman show was like that in the 80s (even moreso in the early 80s). You just never knew what would happen next. He helmed a very innovative show back in his NBC days. There had never been a talkshow that broke all the rules before. I think it's possible that the encounter with Crispin might really have pushed him toward the mainstream. Watching it that night, you could see how freaked out Dave was. You could sense this "I'm tired of all the freaky shit!" vibe for the rest of the show. You knew Carson didn't have to deal with this crap! But a great strange moment in TV history. A quick search on Google shows me that Glover came back in 1992 -- so this week wouldn't have been the first reunion, but I still would have loved to see them together again. Oh well, maybe the upcoming release of "American Splendor" will convince the Late Show to bring back that other great Letterman nemesis, Harvey Pekar. Apparently there are even clips of his Late Night appearances in the film. Here's hoping.

Crispin story

N.O.M.A.A.M., Back in 1987, after Crispin Glover had been in Back to the Future and River's Edge, among other things, he made an appearance on "Late Night with David Letterman." This is more or less how it went: The show began normally -- with the exception that the "Top Ten" graphic wasn't working so they skipped the Top Ten List, promising it would be on later in the show. Glover came out wearing a long wig, bell-bottoms, and extremely high platform shoes. As Letterman tried to ask him the typical leading questions that define his "interviews," Crispin offered only strange and almost incomprehensible answers. It really seemed like Glover was on some kind of mind-altering substance. Finally, with Letterman completely perplexed, Crispin got up and whined, "I'm strong...and I can KICK!" At that point he wound up and delivered a platform-shoed karate kick straight toward Letterman's head, stopping only a few inches short of the target. Letterman flinched, then rose to his feet. He said, "I think I'll just go check on the Top Ten," and walked off the set. The show went to an unscheduled commercial break. They came back and -- surprise surprise -- Crispin was gone, his segment cut short. Letterman was very clearly pissed off. Hope that helps.
Another thing, N.O.M.A'.A.M.

Remember the Brother Theodore appearances? The one when he started screaming about the glories of thirteen-year-old girls? The sight of a man in his seventies gnashing his teeth and spewing saliva as he discussed their "pert young breasts" was just unreal. Ah, for the days when Chris Elliot was a writer...

I'd never heard that story, + all the references to it (without any backstory) were pissing me off. Thanx for clearing THAT up. I was chuffed with VV hosting- he was great with both Rosie + Geri. But with Will Ferrel on the way- fuckin' A! Vince Vaughn will have his own show within the decade, + Will Ferrel will have a little some-some for all his fans come Thursday. The icing is all Megan Mullaly, though. It'll be interesting to see if she can step outside her character long enough to be in front of the camera. Can't wait, can't wait, must wait, can't wait! Out.

I too watched all that shit on the nights they aired. That first Crispin episode was surreal. But what I haven't seen mentioned in here yet and what is less well remembered is that the very next night, Crispin was back on the show -- not as a guest -- but in the opening segment, goofing on himself and the previous night's strange behavior. As for the monkey tea party, that was hands-down the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life. I nearly pissed myself.

What a fantastic show! I love the fact that Elvis was unpolished and stammered a little in his delivery. I love the fact that he and Eddie Izzard were the two most interesting people on late night talk shows last night (c'mon, Leno was interviewing Fran Drescher -- yawn). "Let peace prevail."

I believe the night after Cripin's original appearance, they started the show with a clip of Glover and Dave, then faded out into Dave screaming as if he was having a bad dream. He starts telling Biff about his dream, and Biff tells Dave that it was no dream, it really happened, but not to worry because they followed Glover back to his hotel and smothered him with the mattress. They about 3 months later Glover returned and tried to explain his behavior. I still enjoy Letterman (and Elvis has been hands down, the best Guest Host I've seen so far) but I do miss those old days.

I never had a good night's sleep in junior high because of Dave. Brother Theodore, Harvey Pekar (can't wait to see American Splendor!), Larry Bud's Toast on a Stick, The Guy Under the Stairs, Dave's dog Bob, the bookmobile lady, and dropping stuff off a 5 story building. Good times. Dave still has a good show, but it's long since lost its underground appeal. Looking forward to Crispin and Will tonight though!

While Elvis Costello will never replace Dave (though he would be funnier and more interesting than NBC's lackey Leno)he was funny, and charming with the guest. I think the writers might have overwritten for him a bit, but he was a joy to watch and a real breath of fresh air to the normal workings of late night talk. LONG LIVE THE GUEST HOST!!!!

Ever since Arsenio's dog pound brought the studio audience to a new level of empty headed energy, the talk show has more often than not become unwatchable with these asses in the bleachers. Ferrill's awkwardness ruined the Chris Rock interview, but it wasnt that bad for playing off a genuine oddball like Crispin. The clip they showed looked kinda weak, but you can't really judge anything when its been distilled down to a 30 second clip. Lets just hope Crispin and Dave come face to face one more time...

Will Ferrell is not unbearably spontaneous like Jim Carrey or Robin Williams, he's a normal guy who has to get into character. Will Ferrell is hosting this show, not a character. Nonetheless, shut Chris Rock up, set fire to the audience and you have a better show.

Nope. Biff has been with Letterman since the beginning. At NBC, Late Night was wholly owned by the network (which is why Conan O'Brien's show still bears that name)and all the staff members were NBC employees. When Letterman moved to CBS, he had the clout to make sure he owned a chunk of The Late Show, producing it through his own company, Worldwide Pants Inc. He was therefore able to bring his valued staff members with him, hiring them away from NBC to work on the new show as direct employees of Worldwide Pants. Biff was one of those valued employees. I have very vivid memories of Biff during the NBC days. "The Pyramid of Comedy" comes to mind. And that's that.

It seems that Biff's relationship with Dave pre-dates even Late Night. Check out http://www.freep.com/entertain ment/tvandradio/biff31_2003013 1.htm Biff was with Dave even during his brief 1980 NBC morning show -- two years before Letterman got a crack at the 12:30 slot. 1: Vince Vaughn; the delivery, the interviews, he was the fuckin' man. I say again, he will have his own show within the decade. 2: Elvis; beautifully twitchy, which made the audience respond well. The interviews were a bit crap, but not the debacle that was... 3: Will Ferrel. Remember Paul slobbering all over him + his movie just after the Kenny Rogers bit? That was so sad. Anyone who is defending him for being soft-spoken: who cares? Either he should get his ass into character for the show (he KNOWS what people were expecting) or not do the show. I was very disappointed. Out.
