Just go out and get the japanese versions from Amazon.co.jp (you can navigate there in english). Most have been out for ages (region 2) and have an english dub if you really want that or english subtitles. They are all 2 disc sets with the entire storyboarded film on disc 2!

This is definately great news. I seriously hope that Nausicaa will also finally be available on DVD in the near future. It's basically not available right now (unless you count that horribly raped "Warriors of Wind" version). And with Disney involved there should be a chance of decent distribution too? Without anime we wouldn't have all of these stylish and "orignial" action movies that you see today. Hell, the Matrix wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for anime. Check out "Wicked City", "Golgo 13" or "Fist of the North Star" and you might be surprised. This isn't stuff you'll catch on a Saturday morning. I was introduced to these films 10 years ago when a friend brought over his Japanese language versions tapes of these films. Now for the record, none of us can speak a LICK of Japanese, but for 6 hours, we were RIVETED by these stories that were unfolding in front of our eyes! Possibly the finest animated features ever put to celluloid were being witheld from american audiences, and for that weekend at least, we felt like the only ones who knew! Maybe the Wizard finally gave Disney a Brain. Please tell me that "Nausica" is to be added to this list!

The Japanese version has a terrible red tint throughout the feature, apparently a consequence of the transfer being optimized for plasma screen TVs instead of plain old proletarian cathode ray tubes. The upcoming R1 will use a different transfer that should be properly colored. (I understand the R3 has the same problem, but the French R2 is okay). Regarding "Full Metal Jacket," if you want it in widescreen buy a 16x9 set and zoom in on the picture, I'd rather have it as Kubrick wanted.

I think this is great news. Although I'd take a better Totoro disc and Nausicaa over Kiki's any day. But, Laputa is an awesome movie and it will be great to see Spirited Away again. I'd also like to see Lupin III as well. I've only been able to get fansubs off of KaZaA as there aren't too many places these can be found. These are some great movies that will blow anything out there today away. And, most were made in the 80's and 90's. Disney doesn't have anything on Ghibli. Anyways, I'm excited. Thanks for the news. As for all the dorks out there hating anime but crying about Matrix, why don't you watch "Ghost In The Shell" and you'll see about 2 dozen things that were ripped off from that anime to make Matrix. I'm a big Miyazaki fan, but the best news this year is that Kieslowski's Three Colors Trilogy is FINALLY coming out on March 4th. Considering these are the best films of the 90's, I'd say it's a pretty big deal. $30 for the box set makes it even better. Don't know what features it will have, but the films are enough for me. *** As for Miyazaki, I just received the Region 0 set, and I'd rather have my money go to some pirate than the rapists at Disney, even if Ghibli is getting a percentage. Why the fuck do I want all the english versions anyway? If they don't come with at least the OPTION of subtitles, they're worthless. Plus, with the Region 0 set you get ALL the Studio Ghibli films, including Grave of the Fireflies, two more films from the same director, and Miyazaki's video to some cheezy Japanese pop song (which is a great film anyway). After seeing all the films, I still think Spirited Away is the best, followed by Naussica.

To dismiss Miyazaki's films as just anime is to dismiss Kurosawa's SEVEN SAMURAI as "just another chopsocky movie". Educate yourself, or STFU. And as for subtitles? I have no problem if dubs are made available as long as subs are also made available. I prefer subs to dubs because, and pay attention, SUBS MISS HALF THE FUCKING STORY! Ever see the old AKIRA dub? It's a different fucking movie from the subtitles. Granted, the new dub is much better. And story is more important than anything. If you're too sure of yourself as to not to bother exposing yourself to the nuances of other cultures, well, don't yell at people who call you closeminded. It is rare that a dub is as good as a sub, because they take out the whole damn story. Make both available, please.

Search eBay for "Star Wars trilogy DVD". You are looking for the "5 Star Collection". They are bootlegs mastered from the Laser Discs but they are good quality. Not up to the official releases, but they ease the pain on waiting for the official releases. They have true DD 5.1 sound too, although the DTS track is mince and a waste of space on the disc. Back on topic, I will get Spirited Away, but haven't seen the others. Are they really worth getting???

Maybe you should practice on a book sometime. Anyway, when subtitles are shorter than the dub, it doesn't mean that the subtitles leave out information, it means that they added dialog to the dub, to match the mouths. That's the problem with dubs. To make it look a bit acceptable they have to ADJUST the dialog to match mouth movement. Subs are always a litteral translation of the original dialog (except for a few dreaded dubtitled dvd's). And above all, changing the audio is simply changing the movie. This is just as bad as releasing a widescreen movie as 4:3, or digitally adding underwear to a naked person.

Good sales for original tracks means more releases of foreign titles I do like in the original languages. The OT on DVD is also for suckers. I'm content enough with my widescreen SE VHS set - even if Greedo does shoot first and the quality is kind of grainy. I'm just finished shelling out money to Lucasfilm. I don't buy any of the other SW related merchandise - just the movies, and I'm just very much over it. As for subtitels - what would have saved the prequels (especially TPM) from it's awkward nature would have been subtitles. If Anakin had spoken a different language the entire film, TPM would have been so much better. If Jar-Jar and all of those guys had spoken another language - wow. Bliss. Actual bliss. I wish Lucas would tweak that aspect of his movies in the future - making them cringe-proof. Lucas could also learn a thing or two from Miyazaki. I spent 40 bucks on eBay for the 6-disc Ghibli set (which is a bootleg) and for 12 films, and the majority of Miyazaki's wonderful filmography - uncut and dub free - it was worth it. The bid price on eBay was actually 99 cents, but it was 40 bucks for shipping from Hong Kong - which was pretty high - but it evens out. I'm not a big anime fan at all, but Miyazaki is rockin' and Castle in the Sky had such a great, great energy to it that I wish Lucas could put into his films. A real sense of fun, suspense and, overall, wonder. Nuts to Indy and the OT, if fanboys could get around those there's a whole new world of great stuff and it's being made readily available to you - how is this not great news, people? So you don't give a fuck, so you're anti-subtitles - watch a Miyazaki film with it's original audio track and you'll suddenly give a fuck. Good times.

and all I can say is, Ghibli studios took alot more liberties back then to show gritter treatment towards children in that old series. It is so far turning out to be a favorite above Mononoke or Nausicaa for me. Then again, it helps to have an entire series to develop the story, and I often wish Miyazaki had taken the same opportunity with Nausicaa as a series. I would easily have settled for a step lower in animation quality for the sake of a fully realized, and truly moving story, as shown in the books. And godley, your generalization of "all anime" easily encompasses some recent Disney features, because you can't categorize Anime any more than you can say "Disney sucks because Rugrats and Tiny Toons were annoying as hell". Your statement also trashes a decade of Batman Animated series and films, btw, which owe quite some influence from Anime. Not to mention kicking just about any American cartoon from the 80's (gijoe, transformers, etc), many of which were (surprise!) animated in Japan. So I guess that leaves you with Rocky & Bullwinkle. Damn I get so pissed off at ignorant idiots who casually write off this guys REMARKABLE catalogue of work ( usually because they haven't seen them....and no surprise there ) as 'anime' or 'cartoons'. This is cinema, kids - cinematic in every sense of the word. Subtle, elegant, dynamic, complex, beautiful stuff. Any Miyazaki film release is nothing short of an event. I have a rare anticipation in seeing a new work from this man for the first time. I know I won't be ripped off or disappointed. I know I will be able to suspend my sense of cynicism and inherent disgust at Western movie-making 'formula'. I know I will be amazed, charmed and delighted. I will quite often be nothing less than awestruck. I could go on and on about why I love Miyazaki movies and why you should too. I first heard of this man's work because of my professional connections but have more and more grown to appreciate these films on their own terms, not merely as exercises in technique and aesthetics. I defy each and every one of you to sit through 'Totoro', or 'Kiki's Delivery Service', cynical, hipster adults that you are, and not be left feeling utterly charmed by them.If you think these films have no relevance to you just because they're 'cartoons' I can only say, simply, you're wrong. If you don't like ANY Miyazaki film then I really don't think you like film, period. I know that sounds bombastic but I don't know any plainer way to say it. Finally, I like subtitles because I am a purist and like to hear the actors deliver their performances with the right emotional range and inflections. I'm kept in the mood of the moment of a film whether its Japanese or Swahili, as intended by the director. Dubs always change that, and in my experience not for the better. And please, for fuck's sake, get over 'Star Wars'. I have no personal interest in ripping Lucas and his prequels to shreds ( for the record I think they're appalling garbage ), but Miyazaki is a superior storyteller in my book. Whether they are anime or not, it means that Disney is keeping their contract with Ghibli. I was expecting this though because the only reason they won out over Dreamworks for Spirited Away was that they promised to release the other movies on DVD as well. And if they didn't release the others soon then they would be violating the renegotiated contract, at least as far as I knew. As to the region 0 disks, I've watched the version of Nausicaa on that set and I was heavily disappointed. For one thing there was that symbol that covered part of the picture and the subtitling was terrible. Whole sections of the movie were left untouched, and this was during a very important scene to the movie plot-wise. There were also very weird grammatical errors in places. I can only imagine how much is left out or just wrong in the subtitling of Mononoke Hime.
