Gary Oldman to take on HARRY POTTER!

Seems like it's all bad news these days .. anyway, Sirius Black was a cool character, and I love Gary Oldman. There's always a bit in the back of my head that sez he's above this sort of role, but then I remember Air Force One.

Say what you want about Oldman, you can't deny he means every fucking second of what he does. There isn't a false second in a Gary Oldman performance and that is what, in my opinion, makes him a great actor.

If you look at the first film, it did gangbuster business, and the second one isnt doing too shabby, but the luster is gone from this thing. The fact that it made 250 million, which is nothing to sneeze at, seems kind of weak. Sadly, it's what happens when you put out an inferior first film, the second suffers, even if i's superior, a movie philosophy hereby known as Phantom Menace Syndrome. Then take a movie like Fellowship of the RIng which was excellent, and watch the second movie exceed the take of the first. I have a feeling by the time the third and fourth Harry Potter films come out, their fan base will have grown up and the series will slowly vanish from sight.

...considering that they were designed for KIDS. Too many people lose sight of that one salient fact. When Columbus received criticism for hewing too closely to the books in his adaptations, I felt it was unfair because that is PRECISELY what kids who had read the books would have wanted. As older moviegoers with (presumably) more sophisticated tastes, the notion that a director might tinker with and even outright change from the source material (a la Peter Jackson and TTT) is acceptable, so long as a valid reason exists for any changes and if those changes were implemented with a sure hand and awareness of why they were there. The Harry Potter series should not have been held to the same standard, in this respect. The kids who know and love the books would not have understood the changes and the films would not have performed as well as they did. That said, I do like the books very much and enjoy the films on their own terms. Gary Oldman would be very good indeed as Sirius Black, who needs to be able to convey a certain sense of danger. And Harry, the condescending attitude toward the Harry Potter series is noted; feel free to stop anytime. I always get a sense that your disdain for HP is somehow a show of support for LOTR, that you have fallen into the trap of pitting the 2 franchises against each other, much like Star Wars is regularly set against any genre franchise of note. As has been said MANY times before, their is room for all series, as long as they are well done.

Gary Oldman's a good actor, but don't cast him as Sirius Black. Black should have a noble but wasted mien, and clean up well. Also look good in greasy black hair. Hell, give it to Rickman. If John Rhys Davies can do two characters in a series why not Rickman? Pull a Nicholas Cage.

no offence, but he's too short (read the books: really tall and really gaunt) and just too nasty. Sirius should be able to give off some sense of danger, but he's also got to show a tender, fatherly side. I just can't imagine Oldman doing that part very well. He'd be way better as Wormtongue, even in terms of simple physique. He might do a cool Voldemort as well, but I'd still prefer Wormtail. ***And I've said it once and I'll say it again: Richard E. Grant for Sirius Black & Paul McGann for Remus Lupin. And throw in Peter O'Toole/John Neville as Dumbledore while you're at it.

The guy was just speculating. First off... he can't be Voldemort due to the fact that he doesn't appear at all in the third story. And I still say that he's physically wrong for Sirius. That just leaves Lupin and Wormtail. I can see him easily doing both characters well... But since this source claims that he's signed for both movies, I tend to believe that he's up for the role of Wormtail.

I agree with anyone that says GO would make a great Sirius Black, that's who I thought of when I saw the article title. And harkavey; I assume there is some humor to your post...at least I hope! I mean, two words, Police Academy. I happen to think that both of the first 2 HP films are good, but not great. The gross for the second film reflects that. But enjoying these films has nothing to do with being a pedophile. So many people of all ages have read these books that you can talk to about half of the people you run into about them. Brought the world closer together, regardless of what age bracket they were intended for. Now if JK would JUST PUT OUT THE NEXT FUCKIN' BOOK ALREADY!!!

I can't remember how Sirius Black was described in the book, but I kind of imagine him as looking like the main character in "To Hell and Back: A Sin City Love Story" (if I may use a little read comic book to describe a character in a series of books read by more people than the Bible (the Holy Bible, that is)). But anyway, as far as an actor's physicality, does it really matter? Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson always looked over six feet tall on the screen, but are much shorter in real life (didn't Gibson once play a character who was nine feet tall and could shoot fire from his ass?). One of the great joys of life (adapted from William Goldman) is finding out your taller than an action hero. Hell, I'm five-ten and I think that makes me taller than Conan the Barbarian. Wicked.

He made a helluva impression on me in THE PROFESSIONAL. But he loses serious points for his hammy villains in both LOST IN SPACE and THE FIFTH ELEMENT. And I can barely recall his hammy villain in AIR FORCE one, which is probably a blessing. I was reasonably impressed with his Dracula, but the film itself was a dog. He is clearly in it for the money.

I've forgotten the guy's real name, but he's a bad guy on the level of Brad Dourif's Wormtongue(gee, figure that), and he's a LOT more like the kind of roles Oldman usually takes--not that I'm against him as Black mind you, he'd be great. Oldman would be great playing a good guy as Lupin too, but he's not in the fourth book so he's not likely in the next film. Wormtail is though. This is pretty cool though, no matter who he plays. Of course there have been lots of internet casting rumors for Harry Potter lately--Michael Gambon as Dumbledore coming to mind.

Oldman is great but I've always been sold on Jeremy Irons for Sirius. He's perfect in every way. The potter books are fantastic but the movies are sorta ordinary. For that I blame COLOMBUS and three kids are still a bit wishywashy. Radcliffe overacts, Watson's Hermione has improved a lot but I'm fed up with Ron. He has two expressions and I just want to kick him in the shins to get some real emotion from him. Rickman should lose some weight and play Snape more edgy and intimidating, instead of hamming it up. Alfonso Cuaron is going to kick ass with 'Prisoner of Az'. It's official that Gambon is playing Dumbledore, which will be interesting. I though Harris RIP played Dumbledore too old and feeble, after all, he's still meant to be powerful. Also, I agree that Oldman could do good things with wormtail but he's meant to be fat. BTW, who the hell is Lemony Snicket?

Gary Oldman (if he is cast) would probably play Black, because the character is supposed to be roughly the same age as Snape, as they went to Hogwarts together. I really hope Rickman isn't leaving the franchise, he plays such a kickass Snape.

Excuse me, but just because Harry Knowles doesn't want to plow through those books doesn't make him a moron. I haven't read them either. Why? I'm busy reading OTHER books. When I do want cheap thrills, there's better places I can go than Rowling's world. I have many friends who enjoy the books (and continue to buy and read them), and most have told me I'm not missing THAT much. She can write a 750 page children's book, and I'm supposed to be impressed? Not any more than seeing Stephen King do it. You want intelligent children's books? Try the Green-Sky trilogy from Zilpha Keatley Snyder. Or Michael Chabon's new one. As for the films, they are middling entertainment at best. These films are not labors of love. It's a franchise for Warner Bros., and an ego trip for the author. What's with treating the Potter books as gospel? If Jackson can take liberties with Tolkein, why is Rowling so sacred? The first film did well, but once Fellowship of the Ring and Attack of the Clones came out, I don't think people were impressed any longer with this fantasy. Mark my word, the numbers will continue to decline, regardless of whichever desperate British actor takes a paycheck to be in each subsequent installment. Part 7 WILL be direct-to-video. May God have mercy on Gary Oldman's soul.

#1 Gary Oldman is not a house hold name (So this is not stunt casting) #2 The HP trolls will move onto the Series of Unfortunate Events (Lemony Snicket) movies eventualy even though like HP, S.O.U.E. is a good read (short and to the point if you can't get through it in a week or less you can't read worth shit. #3 I wish everyone would stop comparing LOTR and HP just because they are both fantasy... how about let's bash Xena because even though filmed in NZ it did'nt have the stunning vistas that LOTR has. #4 The 3rd movie is gonna turn a lot of heads (But only if the Hippogriffs are pulled off right) #5 I like making lists #6 I too belive harry has read the series (and SOUE as well) #7 Hellboy is gonna be cool as hell #8 The only way book 4 is gonna get split up into two movies is if Matrix 2&3 do EXTREAMLY well (and it's the only way book 4 can be done right #9 the reason why there is little hype now is because of JKR's lack of production or Kubrickesqe (if she has such a) need for perfection.

My GOD! Rickman has been perfect, as has Coltrane, and all the kids, Branagh was hysterical, Oldman would be brilliance. It's the equivalent of Patrick Stewart's casting as Professor X - frigging brilliance, and though it should have been plainly obvious (something that usually eludes the studios), but it's taken some sort of miracle they actually got the right people for the job. It's a shame that Harris has passed on - I quite liked him in the role and honestly I still haven't a clue who they're gonna replace him with. As long as Oldman's got more screen time than John Cleese has gotten (and Cleese gets a little more), I'm happy.

Yeah, Oldman's done some hammy stuff. But hey, I LOVED his performance in 5th Element. It takes a certain bizarre taste in movies, I think, to really "get" 5th Element. One of those movies that acts like it's supposed to be an action sci-fi flick, but it plays simultaneously as a weird sort-of parody of the genre with characters you can't forget nor help but love em. Plus it's an extremely quotable movie. Anyhoo, Oldman's always played slimy creepy guys extremely well, and also has the ability (Immortal Beloved) to do some incredible dramatic work, so I'll welcome him in the Potter series any day. Oh, and whoever said Christopher Lloyd should be cast in HP - LOL, excellent idea. We are living to see an incredible renaissance of fantasy on the screen these days. Mark my words, Harry Potter will be classic on the level of Wizard of Oz in 50 years, and LOTR (for various reasons) will be a benchmark on the level of the original Star Wars. (I believe The Matrix will be a genre classic, but will not maintain the cinematic acclaim it initially acquired.)

Let's consider Sirius Black for a second-- he's accused of several murders he didn't commit (including betraying Harry's parents), gets thrown in prison (WITHOUT a trial, no less) for 12 years where he faces Dementors every day, so he has to fight for his sanity, and he escapes. In fact, he's the only person to ever successfully escape Azkaban. He's a man full of angst, bitterness, and a desire for revenge, especially against Wormtail, and he's a more complex character than people have given J.K. Rowling credit for-- as is his main rival, Severus Snape, who Alan Rickman has had a field day with. I'm pretty sure that Gary Oldman is more than capable of going toe to toe with Alan Rickman, and his resume has had plenty of characters that are psychologically complex and angsty. He's right for the part, IMO. As for Remus Lupin, most fan rumors for years have pointed to Ewan McGregor for the part, but I don't know. He could probably pull it off. I'd love to see who gets that part. :)

While we're on the subject of who could play what, I've always pictured Colin Firth as Remus Lupin. Wormtail is supposed to be short and fat, so Oldman isn't really good for that either. Jeremy Irons would be a good Voldemort in Goblet of Fire, but I wonder if Christian Coulson will reprise his role. He'll be about 26 when that movie gets made, and why wouldn't Voldemort return to power younger than middle-age? How about Terry Jones (from Monty Python) as Professor Trelawney. He looks kooky enough in a dress. Or maybe Barry Humphries (Dame Edna)?

...there may not be seven books! I know that the murmurs are out there that Rowling is getting increasingly harder to motivate with each book. Witness her "Chinese Democracy", "Order of the Phoenix". Allegedly--ALLEGEDLY--it's going to be released sometime this year (Summer?). But some Potter fans will be in the magic paintings at Hogwarts before this is all over with. I really don't think that there will be movies based on books 5,6, and 7, because the kids now will be in college by the time those could be adapted. The tikes now will dismiss it as a hand-me-down from their older siblings, thusly wanting NOTHING to do with it. They're going to have to recast after "Goblet of Fire", at the latest, anyway. I foresee the series reaching a manufactured pseudo-resolution at the conclusion of that film, even though the end of the book is where the really "battle for Muggle earth begins". And if they make it two feature length films, as they probably have to? That's two films between Christmas '05 and Christmas '06. I'm saying that Book 7 wouldn't hit the big screens until 2010 at the earliest, but probably not until '11 or '12. And even then, pre-production would have to be concurrent with Rowling's drafting of the novels. The films are done well and have stayed realistically faithful (no Peeves is a personal pet Peeve, if you will), but it'll be a bona fide gyp if they pull the plug on the series halfway through. I understand, it's all financially-based, but I can't see the sufficient box office interest being there in three or four years. I hope I'm way wrong. P.S. "ROTC"? What? Are the Weasleys paying their way through Hogwarts through military service? Hunh?? Are the twins selling Bush magical Iraqi Bludgers?

PAUL MCGANN or SEAN BEAN would be both dreamy and - considering Oldman and Rickman - more age approriate in the role than fan fave Ewan. Or in a pinch, they could hire a FIENNES.

I know you trolls would love for this series to go away, Pokemon style, but be ready for three more books and (at least) five more movies. Now that #2 has shown a movement in the right direction and people have set their expectations at a reasonable level, expect 3 to do as well if not better than 2.

Yes folks Gary oldman WILL play Sirius Black and i also think he would be right for the role. Some people need to stop and realize the book doesnt have to be followed to a T. I have a feelling Curon will be able to make the movie franchise better when he shows his finished product. The movie is kiddified becuase Columbus is better at the stage Harry was in when he was young but now that his changing i think its great the the director showing this aspect of his life is Curon. As for the Harry Bashers...ppl get a life and quit complaining. ESPECIALY the people who have NEVER read the book.

Aw yes...weve seen Gary Oldman as the decomposed foppish flesh puppet mayor of Whoville(Hannibal), the verbal Shakespearian masturbatory linguistic contortions of a puffy shirt wearing fool(Rosencrantz), a libido driven midget(the upcoming Tiny Tippytoes), and a marauding effette futurist(5th Element) Good to see hes deversifying. Btw, whats up with actors playing tiny people? Ya also got John Leguizamo, the Hobbit people...Im surprised there isnt an outcry from the little people unions!

Uh, how can ANYONE say that given Oldman's chameleon-like way of slipping into his roles? The character's being short and fat is no obstacle. It's called make-up and acting. Fat Bastard? You can honestly say you'd think of a character created by Mike Meyers if you were watching Oldman on screen? Have you had your eyes checked lately? Oldman is a far better fit for Wormtail than he is for Sirius Black, but it's to his credit that he'd be good in both roles no matter which one he took on. And let's face it, we're not talking an obese character that requires mountains of latex and a body suit either. Martin Short could play the guy in less get up than he had for Jiminey Glick!

Rowling has already figured out the major plot points for the final few books, the big ones having to do with Harry's mother. She has also written the final chapter of the final book, with the last word ever rumoured to be 'scar.' The fifth book hasn't come out yet probably due to it being longer than the fourth, her getting married and falling pregnant. Technically, it hasn't even been that long since she wrote the fourth one. Look how long Thomas Harris takes to write each Hannibal Lecter book. As for the movies, this is Hollywood! They're going to milk Harry whether people like it or not, just like they're releasing Jason X , Halloween 9 and Batman 5 because they know a certain number of people will turn up just to find out what happens next in the character's lives. Hollywood will probably try and make more sequels and prequels after the books stop coming! Also, The whole theory that the fan base will grow up is rubbish. Potter is adored by people of all ages. Rowling has proven her entertainment worth and her knack for weaving everything together in the end is making people's mouths water. Well, mine anyway. PS: Surprised that so many people like Rickman's Snape. Don't you think the book's Snape is more mean, witty and experienced - ex death eater, knew more dark arts than any kid in school - than Rickman's? I'm not saying he's bad, he just needs to take what he is doing and double it.

The BOOKS are children books, dear. And the movies are very captivating for any REAL fan. It gives you a visual you can't get when you read the books. You have to know that the books are always better then the movies...
