Haha....seriously though. The Japanese culture is WAY open with their sexuality and sex in general. A lot of times, especially in animation, anything goes. Trying to say Japan is sexually repressed compared to say, the United States, is laughable. For the most part, I agree with people who say hentai is sick. After all, that's more or less what the word means. However, there's one guy out there who's making some seriously messed up anime that is actually interesting and well-made. Movies like Kite and Mezzo Forte have this strange mix of violent shoot-outs and explicit sex (used for shock value in Kite and for humor in Mezzo Forte), and it's all put together with a decent plot and good artwork. For the people who avoid explicit sex like the plague, there are the censored versions that are a hell of a lot easier to find than the original versions. Heck, you might even find Kite at Blockbuster. Here's this huge conversation about hentai and nobody mentions the only artistic achievements in the genre. Some people would make a case for Weather Report Girl or the Wandering Kid series (depending on the level of misogyny), but I'm not really willing to go that far. Anyway, Demonlover might be okay. Irma Vep was kind of cool, and I liked Sonic Youth before International Jet Set Trash and No Star (a really bad album). Who knows? It's about time for Gina Gershon to have another decent role. What's it been, ten years since the last one?

Can we get back to the movie for a second? Yes, this thing sucks. Apparently Assayas couldn't come up with any interesting characters (they're cynical and hate each other and that's it) or issues (basically it boils down to RAPE FANTASIES ARE BAD AND SO ARE PEOPLE WHO MAKE MONEY OFF IT) so he stretches the movie out to 2h10m with a massive conspiracy in which two rival companies plot to steal each other's pr0n. I didn't make that up, that's the plot. I would be able to take this seriously if not for the fact that the movie itself languishes on the sort of sexually violent material it's supposedly condemning, but it's OK because it's all in the name of making a GRAND OVERARCHING STATEMENT on the moral bankruptcy of contemporary global corporatism and whatnot. Because god knows that violent rape porno is the worst thing the megacorporations have planned for the world at the moment. What the hell happened to Assayas anyway?
