Christopher Reeve?

What a sorry world that the highly inferior "Christopher Reeve" version of VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED (nevermind that John Carpenter directed the film) is cited over the original 1960 film and its source material, "The Midwich Cuckoos", by John Wyndham to make a point about how comics "borrow" from earlier (usually superior) classic work.
Thanks, Humpy Smurf. And Speaking Of JOHN CARPENTER'S VILLAG

If Carpenter directs a film version of KURT BUSIEK'S ASTRO CITY, will it be retitled JOHN CARPENTER'S KURT BUSIEK'S ASTRO CITY. God, what if Irwin Allen produced? IRWIN ALLEN'S JOHN CARPENTER'S KURT BUSIEK'S ASTRO CITY.

Listen to your drunken Scottish pal, man! CATWOMAN *is* good. But...despite the praiseworthy review I just gave it, I'd almost suggest you wait for the second trade (assuming the unpredictable DC puts one out) simply because the second story arc is where things got *great*. The first story arc is good, and has many great *moments*, but as I noted, it's a little reliant on cliches. Alternatively, if you've got a little extra cash-money at some point, I have no trouble in recommending CATWOMAN - SELINA'S BIG SCORE, which is a total stand-alone and wouldn't require you to read another issue ever if you weren't perfectly delighted with it. Unfortunately, it's a twenty-five dollar hardcover, and that's a bit of a risk. Okay, okay, I got it. You're low on cash, and you need your cigarette money -- you don't *got* the dough for no stinkin' trade paperbacks. Here's what you do -- nab CATWOMAN #6 at your local comic shop (it should still be available). It was the start of a new story arc and one of the best issues the series has produced. For a mere two or three bucks, this one issue will tell you whether the series is for you. And...AND...you can read my hard-sell review of that issue right here: http://www.aintitcool.com/disp lay.cgi?id=12185 What a country!
Quixote, you've *almost* sold me on RISING STARS...

I picked up the first three issues a few years back. Liked the writing a lot -- couldn't stand the Top Cow art. Decided my money could be better spent elsewhere. The terrible thing is that Brent Anderson is handling the final arc on the book, and I *looooove* his stuff. Why can't they get him to go back and redraw all the previous stuff? It'd be the ultimate director's cut! C'mon, who's with me?! This is the kind of project I think CrossGen owner and self-made millionaire, Mark Alessi, should *really* be investing in. Am I right or am I right? In fact, that's my question of the week to you TalkBackers out there -- what comic or comic storyline would you like to have redrawn by a better artist? Me, I'd like to have seen the 80's version of THE SUICIDE SQUAD (which had solid, if uninspired art) redrawn by that crazy Bryan Hitch kid. Then even the dipshits of the era would've had to give the book a look, and in doing so discover one of the most kick-ass comics of the decade.

I knew someone was gonna call me on this. I picked the more recent Village of the Damned because it was funnier to refer to that as a classic than something somebody might actually consider a classic, and I could tell a few jokes that people might actually get. I am aware of both the original movie and the source material, although sadly I've personally experienced neither. And that may be the third, unspoken reason that I chose the more recent film as the comparative 'classic', although I think I would have chosen the '95 version regardless. And to tell you the truth, I don't know that I've ever actually seen the new one either, at least from start to finish. All in good fun m'friend, all in good fun.

Quixote, that was the funniest review I've read in a while. Buzz's reviews were great too. As for Ambush Bug, my favorite DeMatteis work is Brooklyn Dreams.
That is one MESSED-UP headline...

Goes right up there with Astro City, JSA, and Ultimate Spider-Man as books I picked up a trade for and immediately started thinking of places I could get a couple of bucks selling them back to. sk

You're right. My lack of knowledge of the non-existent second 1960's Village of the Damned movie completely renders my joke irrelevant. I'm obviously an incompetent and a buffoon for failing to outline every single detail about the Midwich Cuckoos and the ensuing movies (of which, imdb says 2. Total.)in my review of Rising Stars. God, don't I feel stupid for not anticipating that my words might be read by humorless anal-retentives like yourself, and adjusting my writing style accordingly. Thank you, "Dad", for pointing out the error of my ways, and I'll do my best from now on to make sure my knowledge of fine cinema doesn't begin and end with the Matrix. Boy, you sure have me pegged.

You're right! That approach would completely remove the stigma of you being a humorless anal retentive. I tell you what, let us instead debate the existence of sarcasm, its role in society, and how our reviews would be better served by stripping them of humor & creativity, and replacing those aspects with a detailed history of every reference we make. You go first.
Wait, let me get this straight...
