Why would you even wanna watch a movie on a computer?
by DrCannibal
Jul 17th, 2002

So you download it and then have to watch it on your tiny 15 or 17 inch monitor. How lame is that? Wouldn't you rather sacrifice a whole 25 bucks or however much it costs and watch it on a big tv? Plus, I doubt the quality is the same. I've never understood what was so good about watching stuff on tiny computer screens all by yourself.

DrCannibal: When people pirate a movie off the internet they often burn it in VCD (video-CD) format to a CD. Then they can place it in a VCD compatibly DVD player (which most DVD players are) and watch it on their TV. Your right that the quality will be lower than a DVD, but if you just want to be able to watch a film without going to the theater or paying for the video then it does the trick rather nicely. The fact that you're stealing the film by not paying for it I leave for others to discuss, but from a technical standpoint you can easily watch a downloaded movie on a big screen, and if you really know what your doing you can even do it with surround sound (in theory).

Bootlegs may be nice for their own sake, but there's no question a DVD produces better quality (although I have seen some damn good rips out there). Furthermore, you also get all the nice extras with a DVD.

Why watch DVDs on a computer? Isn't it obvious?
by filker-tom

There are two huge DISadvantages to watching DVDs on your computer: (1) yeah, you've only got so big a screen (although I got a sweet deal awhile back on a 19" monitor, and it's been doing just fine), and (2) most of the "DVD-ROM Special Features" are artificially dependent on a licensed, badly-programmed Internet Explorer hack variously called InterActual or PC Friendly, which is one of the sloppiest and most useless pieces of tripe I've ever seen. That having been said, I LOVE watching DVDs on my computer. I'm up close in my nice comfy chair, listening to my Dolby 5.1 Surround with my badass Creative Audigy card and Inspire 5300 speakers (a grandiose $200 upgrade I needed to make anyway), watching a razor-sharp picture that I can run full-screen OR as a window while I do other stuff (and how cool is that?), AND I can pause at any point and instantly capture the video to a file, no muss, no fuss, no external hardware. I have absolute control over the video quality, being able to adjust the resolution, color, etc., in ways that my TV simply doesn't allow, and I never lose the frickin' remote. I'd get the bootleg if I had something better than a crap modem. But then I'd still definitely buy the DVD. The best way to watch DVD is on a plasma screen or a digital projector. Expensive but it's what I aspire to get. Can't decide weather to get the R1 or the R2 dvd. Better picture quality on R2 but longer wait probably.

Though I am a republican (not the same thing) and I have a big screen TV. So Evil Reader, there goes that theory. Actually big-screens are pretty affordable now, and the good ones are not just 'regular TV's built bigger.' Regular television looks okay on my TV, but DVD's look awesome with a much better picture. And Evil Reader you can crack on Republican all you want, and you probably will have many valid points, but statistically most drug dealers are democrats.

Can't wait for this... I heard one of the Easter Eggs is a long, slow close-up shot of Kirsten Dunst eating a pink popsicle. :)Personally, I think that watching downloaded movies is a waste of time. The quality is crap, the sound is crap, people talk and make noise throughout it, (the only thing I can't stand about going to the movies) so why bother? I'll shell out the dough, either at a store or somewhere like ebay.com or half.com, where I can get a decent deal...

The film was the most over hyped thing in existence. I won't bother buying the DVD let alone getting a bootleg off it. Talking of bootlegs.... I too can't see the point in them.... why people would prefer to download a film and watch it on the computer rather than spend the money and go to the cinema or buy a decent DVD copy of it is beyond me. Maybe these people are just too scared to leave the safety of their computer and get out of the house. I think that the people who get the bootlegs are just cheapskates.

Well, the quality of your bootleg depends on the source. There's a bootleg out there that is a rip of a screener DVD of Spiderman. That's a damn good bootleg. On the other hand, some of the bootlegs you will see are pretty crappy. It's all the source that they come from. As a general rule, if it is released from Centropy, it is a pretty good bootleg. I think most people download these bootlegs as something to have until the official DVD is released. When I get a bootleg, that's what I do. I have a really good Boot of AOTC, but that thing goes into the trash as soon as my DVD arrives...and I've already preordered it.

Best bet? Get a R2 that's hacked for R1. Best of both worlds. You get your R1 discs a few months before they come out in the UK and can get R2 TV shows (Buffy, Angel, the Office, etc.) I live in Asia and I live by mine. You'll need a multi-system TV, but apparently they're not that hard to find in England.

BTW - What is with the Canadian content on this disc - That fucking Hero sond should be evidence enough that Chad Kroeger and those Nippleback morons are the modern-day Spinal Tap. Well I also have the bootleg Spider-Man VCD. The quality is ok for a cam version. However, I saw the film 4 times in the theater, and will be buying the DVD the DAY it comes out. Yep, fanboy here. I don't think bootlegs took any money from this movie. The quality is crap, and the sound is muffled. But I do love getting them. It's nice to see the movie in the theater, and if the movie is good, I'll pay to see it in the theater more than once...gladly. But after it's out of the theater and until it comes out on DVD, it's really sweet to have a copy you can view if you really wanna see it again. :)

Although I could've done without the music videos for those crappy mtv bands. Does "Hero" remind anybody else of that Seal song from the Batman Returns soundtrack? A much better song done by a much more talented artist. Also, although Dunst is hotter than all getout, she has all the brains of the lump in my shorts. Why the hell is she doin' commentary? She'll probably giggle and talk about malibu barbie throughout. And as softspoken as Sam Raimi is, we'll probably hear like two words from him. The rest of the DVD looks brilliant. The PC Activision game DVD Rom supplement is a nice touch too.

Anyone see her on SNL? Tell me those things didn't look sad. Definitely not the picture perfect orbs we were led to believe. They were hangin' down to her navel. The boobs of someone twice her age. That dress didn't look tight either. Without the aid of Hollywood magic or a firm push up bra those things are slappin' against her knees. No wonder Tobey dumped her, not to mention that bubble headed voice of hers. So Kirsten, prove us wrong and show us the goods. As far as this DVD goes, I refuse to own anything featuring the flash in the pan, "Where are they now?" music of Chad Kroeger or Sum 41.

I've got a bunch of Kazaa bootlegs - Spider-Man, Frailty, AotC, Minority Report, and a high quality screener of LotR. Their fun. I like watching movies at home. There was no way I was going to pay for 'Scooby-Doo', but I was reasonably content to watch it on Kazaa. It's also good for some harder to find titles like 'Battle Royale'. Now onto Kirsten Dunst - she seems like a very nice person and I'd way rather hang out with her than any of the bashers on here. Come on, she's nicely balancing flicks like 'Spider-Man' and 'The Cat's Meow'. Just because she's pretty and she's cheerful and charming and funny doesn't make her an idiot. She's a comedienne first, and if you've seen 'The Virgin Suicides' or 'Crazy/Beautiful' or 'The Cat's Meow', you know that she's also an excellent dramatic actress. Hell, she blew all the 'SNL' regulars out of the water when she guested, and she was the only bearable aspect of 'Drop Dead Gorgeous' and 'The Crow - Salvation'. Now I know that this is a boys club, and a lot of you guys resent the hell out of women. However it's ugly and it's pathetic. Like the song says, 'Get your shit together, and join the human race.'

Is it just me or after reading filker-tom's long post about why he would prefer to watch movies on a computer, does he sound like the biggest geek in the world? and coming from another geek that reads this website that's just sad. Not only does he bother to talk about how cool it is to watch movies on his computer, he has to name all the different components that make it so special for him. my personal favorite is "I can watch it in any size window and do my other work while I watch" filker, movies are meant to be watched, not to play in the background. You are depriving yourself of what makes the movie experience so special. and you are a geek. You are just sad.

Geek? Sad? Half-Right
by filker-tom
Jul 18th, 2002

I probably shouldn't respond to stuftseveredhead's comment that I seem to him (or her) to be "the world's biggest geek" and "sad" because I mentioned that I really like watching movies on my computer, and that one of the reasons was the flexibility in my viewing options. I think the kicker was that he said I had a "long" post, in a post nearly as long as mine. ;-) Now, understand that I'm not at all steamed, just bemused. See, I hardly ever turn my darn TV on anymore. I do, on the other hand, spend a lot of time at my computer. And sometimes, for instance, I'm watching a movie while also downloading something, or I get an instant message. It's nice to be able to PAUSE the movie and then get right back to it, or to have access to the controls of the one while watching the other. Geekish? Oh yeah. Sad? Somehow I don't think so. This is not an era when the audience sits reverently at the altar of Big Screen Entertainment. If you want a full movie experience -- if I want a full movie experience, and I certainly go to enough movies -- there's a multiplex down the street. Heck, out here in Ann Arbor, we've got the Michigan Theater, one of the great old movie houses, fully restored and complete with monster pipe organ. There's showing the restored version of Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS later this fall, and I'll be there. But sometimes I just wanna slap the disk in the drive. The point is, this is the ABSOLUTE first criticism I have heard of what is a fairly popular technology, and of some of its major selling points. Creative SELLS their audio cards and speakers for multimedia. ATI and NVidia and all the DVD drive manufacturers and media player programmers SELL their stuff for multimedia. Do those folks with DVD drives in their laptops -- or the ones with portable DVD players featuring screens smaller than a postcard -- deserve scorn because they're not solemnly ensconsed in The Theatre, or because they might want their computer to do something else at the same time? Atsa big no. Finally, I believe that initial bugaboo has been laid to rest -- THIS, my friend, is a long post. Best, Tom Smith - The World's Fastest Filker (www.tomsmithonline.com)

The political parties of today really have nothing to do with those of say, a hundred years ago or prior. They've just retained the names, really. The middle-road gets you fucking nowhere in politics. It's necessary to choose a side these days, unless you want to be apart of some teensy little third party that comes up with good ideas, yet lacks the clout to get any of them done, and attempts to make them popular enough to get picked up by a large party. Apologies if we small-minded Americans offend you, Mr. Fucking International, but that's how our political system works.

Any arguments about comparable quality are predetermined; you simply cannot beat the quality of DVD on a big screen. I've seen pirates on a computer screen, and they're uniformly horrible...borderline unwatchable, if you're used to the good stuff.
