I waited outside the Cinerama for ten hours on December 18th to see LOTR at midnight, and by about 8 o'clock in the evening I could fell the cruel wind through my new gloves and insulated brand new Red Wing work boots. These guys are going to be severely uncomfortable for the next 3 and a half months or so. But it should be a little more seasonable by mid-April. I hope it's worth it guys

I mean.. is this supposed to be the ULTIMATE "Wait"? Sit/Sleep/Stand in line for 4 months is not THAT ultimate. I thought I've read somwhere about people sitting in line for a special sale at a big furniture-center in Sweden some years ago... they sat there for 9 months. It was connected to some kind of theme thing of course related to the fact the after 9 months, a baby is born (yada yada). The first guy in line was surprised on the day of the sale with a new house, car and full furniture(ization). So that has to be a longer wait.... or?

But when the wait was trimmed down to a measely four fucking MONTHS, the guy jumped all over it. I mean, it's not like he doesn't have a life or something. Seriously. Sponging off your parents during your mid-to-late twenties is difficult, and it ain't something you can just pick up and leave behind. I mean, not even mentioning the fact that KFC has recently begun delivery in their area of town, but there's also all kinds of new shows on between September and December, too. Please, someone, anyone (especially you Harry), explain why is it that any criticism (and yes, I do believe it is justified in using the quantifier "any") is met with the counter criticism that one is being "nitpicky?" It is nitpicky and angry to want a story that is devoid of pathetic and lame cultural references in a series of films whose success was due in large part to the fact that it transcended cultural icons, and established it's own universe? You know what, I do not care if this gets me banned, but FUCK YOU! You are a film critic and part of being an effect film critic, is to be nitpicky. If you do not "get" why it is that within the last few days many, many people have dropped any and all interest in SW: EP II: AOTC, then you are a clueless idiot. Hmmm, well, since I live in the Seattle area and will be seeing a certain movie about hobbits at the Cinerama a few (thousand) more times, I guess I'll see these two in line. I won't say anything bad about John, as I am a member of the Seattle Star Wars Society, but I have a story that's worth mentioning. At first, I thought this was funny, then cool, and now it's downright scary--a few months ago I read that an annual British sencus listed over 10,000 people as putting down "Jedi Knight" for their "Religion". Cool! The British government actually had to make it a category (albeit not a recognized religon--yet). These two guys in line for 4 months is certainly comparable to religious conviction. Good, or bad? As Obi-Wan said, it's comes down to one's point of view. In my opinion, it's a statement about love for a fantasy (religion indeed). But hey, if they have the time, patience (and money), all the more power to 'em. I guess it's no worse than Grateful Deadheads or a holy pilgrimage--it's just a pilgrimage through time rather than distance. Too philisophical? Okay, how about this? While you guys are in line, why not get out of the cold and warm up every few hours by seeing Fellowship of the Ring? And then, with that in your blood, if Lucas happens to seek some publicity by visiting, you can tell him to see Fellowship for himself and learn a few things about acting, writing, and most of all CARING ABOUT WHAT THE FANS THINK! Oh yes, am I upset about boy bands in Episode II? Yer darn tootin! First the lame title, now cameo appearences! What's next, Georgio? Penis-nose Clinton getting to play the Sith Lord in Episode III? Waiting in line for TPM was actually the only good thing about the movie. I enjoyed a great game of Star Wars Trivial Pursuit, and had dozens of very interesting conversations. I also had a blast harassing the cinema staff. One of my friends was doing a striptease to convince them to open the door, I nearly shat myself I was laughing so hard. I don't think I would wait in line for months tho, especially for what's left of the SW franchise...

Just had to give my boy his props there. Check out the society online: www.seattlestarwars.com. And I should also mention, if any of you are in Seattle, Harry this includes you, go to the Cinerama -- easily one of the top 5 theatres in the country!! It's owned by Paul Allen, he refurbished it a few years ago (I think 1999), and it's second to none in picture and sound quality, and the seats can't be beat!

First of all to the guys waiting in line for AOTC...rock on. I wish I had the time/money to do this. Yes I am a fanboy, yes I am a geek, and yes I have a wife (who is also a fangirl/geek). If someone is this passionate about movies or any other intrest I say more power too em. We need more people who can follow their dreams and intrests rather than bow down to the corprate 'man'. Personaly I love Star Wars. Yes I even though TPM was a good film (not as good as ESB or anything but still good). It seems to me that most of the TMP bashers on here hate the film because of Jar-Jar. I ask you all just to take a minute and look at the big picture. Look at the reasons for the Trade Federations invasion and the concequences of it for example. I think you might find that there is more plot here than you are allowing yourself to see. Now, as for the N'Stink rumor...I have not yet seen anything from lucasfilm confirming this. It may or may not be true. Even if it i...WHO CARES! Let the little queers have their day. We are talking about what will most likely be a 10 second cameo with no spoken lines. Big deal. Besides rumor has it that they get hacked down anyway. Who here WOULDNT pay money to see that! Hell I would pay good money to be the guy to hack them down! In closing, i know that I will probably get flamed for some of my opinions (not to mention my numerous typos), but you know whay I dont give a shit! I'm sorry if this post covers much the same ground I covered in the thread last night. However that thread has been nixed by the mods and I feel I made some valid points. (Many others seemed to feel so as well, to my surprise.) And I didn't threaten or bash anyone. First off I'd like to say that the N'Sync thing isn't the only problem I've had. It's just the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. I've been a die-hard fan for 25 years... Since I was a little kid. I was already pumped up on Star Wars since I was two with the movie and all the toys... I remember when my dad couldn't find the sandcrawler toy anywhere so he went to his workshop in the basement and built me one out of wood. I still have it and to this day even though I have thousands of dollars worth of vintage and new SW toys, that Sandcrawler is my favorite possession in the world. Then when I was not yet five I witnessed the sheer brilliance that was "The Empire Strikes Back". I was absolutely mesmerized. Then Yoda came on screen and he was the coolest thing I had ever seen in my life. I'd saying seeing 'Empire' at age four would have to be the closest thing I've ever had to a 'religious experience' in my life. Sure many would say it's silly and it's just a movie... But that would be like saying the Mona Lisa is "just a painting" or Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is "just a tune". When art reaches a state of perfection it's pure magic. I don't care if it's fine art or a movie that came out last month. Great art is timeless. Someone who thinks only films like Citizen Kane and Gone With the Wind can be great art, that's just a snobs point of view. If everything is on and a film hits it's target audience square in the face then it's created it's magic.I mean I've tried hard to really like TPM. I've even defended it in the past against the bashers (especially the ones who just go on and on about Jar Jar when I think his one of the lesser problems with the movie.) However the more I watch it the more I realize how bad it is. 'Fellowship of the Ring actually gave me that magical feeling I expected TPM to. Not because it was dark, just because everything fell perfectly into to place and the good guys seemed a real of friends like Han Luke and Leia in the OT. And the evil seemed REAL evil. Like Vader in the OT. Not just some cool looking guy mugging for the camera who never actually does anything evil like Maul. I even think Harry Potter was vastly better. After all Harry wasn't going "oops" ever time he did something right. He actually acted like a chosen one, not some kid playing at McDonalds. Now I do think TPM had great stuff IN it. The lightsaber duels are awesome. The Effects are terrific. Qui-Gon Jinn is a very cool character. The podrace is cool (although it's marred by the cheesy cartoon podracers and the stupid cartoon ESPN voiced announcers.) The fact that it had so much potential just aggravates me more. One thing that really bothers me is that Lucas told us TPM would be a lot like ANH. It's nothing like it. First off we have so-called bad guys but when do they do anything evil? In ANH the Empire commits one evil act after another making us hate them. First we see stormies board Tantive IV and kill a bunch of Rebel Troops. Then Vader strangles Captain Antilles to death. Meanwhile on Tatooine stormies slaughter innocent Jawas and kill Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. Then Vader tortures Leia and Tarkin blows up Alderaan killing millions (perhaps even billions). By this point in the picture us the viewer hates Vader and the Empire just as much as Luke and Leia. Then of course in ESB Vader tortures Han and Leia and slices off Luke's Arm. In ROJ Vader and the Emperor have a strong presence of evil in the final confrontation with Luke. I especially love Palpy telling Luke his friends will now die and laughing and also when Vader threatens to turn Leia to the Darkside. Those parts send chills down my spine. In TPM we have the Neimoidians. They're not evil. Just bumbling fools. They're too audaciously stupid to be evil. And instead of making the battle droids scary he just makes them stupid. "Roger Roger!". Darth Siddious is controlling them but to what end? To get control of the planet and get Palpy (himself) elected Chancellor? Where is the evil in that? I mean after all the republic is "not what it once was". Just saying he's a Sith isn't enough. I mean if someone was watching the films for the first time in chronological order a "Sith" would mean squat to them. Also I mean sure Naboo is taken over, so what? We do hear some vague talk about the people dying (but that's a ploy to get the Queen to reveal her location.) Then Amidala talks about her people dying and their way of life being threatened but I don't see it. We don't see ANY Naboo suffer. For all we know they where just sitting having tea and cookies during the whole thing. In fact except for a few Naboo soldiers and pilots, Qui-Gon and Darth Maul... We see no one else die in TPM. We see no Gungans die in the battle, heck even in ROJ some Ewoks got killed. The worst problems of all are during the final battle. Like I already stated the Gungan battle isn't really much of a battle at all. It's just comedy bits for Jar Jar, that seem more appropriate for a Pixar or PDI CGI toon then for a live action Star Wars. I didn't really have much of a problem with Jar Jar earlier in the film except at times when he seems too cartoonish. But all would have been fine if he redeemed himself in the final battle. Instead he goes Buster Keaton on us. The most insulting is when he has the droid blaster stuck on his foot and he takes out several droids by accident, EVEN a Droideka which even the Jedi couldn't take out. Everything he does good or bad is a mistake. Then we have Anakin in the N1. Instead of having him fly the n1 and go into battle on purpose we have the whole "automatic pilot deal" even worse while he flew his podracer with relative ease he seems to have no clue what to do in the n1 and all his success are accidents. Instead of being The Chosen One and doing everything by design it's "oops this and oops that" acting more like a little kid playing with a toy then "the great pilot" Obi-Wan said he was when he met him. Even worse he flies into the Droid Control ship by accident and then blow it up by accident. (If you've seen the Phantom Edit you've seen how much better it would have worked if Anakin's actions seemed intentional.) Just think how unexciting and anti-climatic ANH would have been if Han accidentally shot Han off of Luke's tail and Luke accidentally blew up the Death Star. Yet that is what Lucas chose to do with TPM. Maybe he didn't think a ten year old could do those things on purpose and if he meant your normal ten year old I would agree but Anakin is suppose to be a child prodigy, the chosen one. Look at Harry Potter. At the end of the movie all of the actions of him and his pals in the movie where with purpose, no "accidents' that luckily come out good and it made it much more interesting. Lucas just seemed to have a bad case of the cutes... And was more interested in being cute then telling a good story like he did with the OT. Back to the villain problem, we have Darth Maul. Yeah he looks freaky enough but he never does anything evil. Even as much as him killing Qui-Gon with a cheap shot pissed me off I couldn't classify it as evil since it was a fair fight more or less. All Maul ever really did besides the duel is mug for the camera and act cool. I mean look how many people where not upset over Qui-Gon's death (although I was) but they where over Darth Maul's. I mean when I was a kid and we played Star Wars no one was like "I wanna be Darth Vader!" Every boy wanted to be Han or Luke. Ok, now after ESB came out there where always some who wanted to be Boba Fett but that's because Boba just acted cool. Plus he wasn't a major villain, he was just a money hungry bounty hunter. Like Maul he just stood around acting cool. That was fine for him but for Maul it sucked. We're suppose to hate the villain and be scared of them. If we think they're cool and want to be them the storyteller isn't doing his proper job. Weird part is the Ewok movies seemed to be more gutsy then TPM in some ways. Battle for Endor opens with the entire Towani being killed except for Cyndel. I remember Lucas took some criticism for supposedly making 'Battle for Endor' and 'Willow' "too intense" for the little ones they where aimed at. With TPM it seemed he finally made a movie genteel enough to satisfy the militant parents watch groups. The reason I'm going on about all this is I want to point out that it's not like I was in a state of Star Wars bliss and I heard N'Sync and it made me start raving like a maniac (you see I just always rave like a maniac, it's my way grin) I'm just someone who has been dedicated to Star Wars his whole life, has always considered it the greatest movie series ever made and the pinnacle of SciFi/Fantasy... And then I was disappointed when Lucas didn't deliver the old magic with TPM. Yet I tried very hard to forgive TPM it's problems, concentrating on the good parts and telling myself Lucas will redeem himself with AOTC. Then Anakin was cast and I was shocked that Hayden looked like your run-of-the-mill pretty boy. Basically a Freddie Prinze JR type. However I told myself that it was because he's a really good actor. However I'm now starting to wonder if he didn't cast that type on purpose to attract teen girls. I can just imagine when the casting came down to Hayden or Colin Hanks that he asked his girls and they told him Hayden looked too average and Hayden is "much more dreamy". I can just picture some of the comments of Lucas kids over the years. "Daddy why does Han shoot down poor Greedo like that? It's not very nice! He should have let Greedo shoot first" "I don't like how those meanie weeinie bad guys choke people and blow planets up, it's mean!" "Daddy 'Dumb and Dumber' is such a funny movie. Star Wars should have poop and fart jokes!" "Dad Jar Jar is soooooo funny. He needs to have more scenes!" "Daddy we just really love N'Sync, they're so hot. They like Star Wars too! Please put them in the movie! Please daddy bear!" "Oh that Colin Hanks acts ok but he's not nearly as dreamy as Hayden. Choose him daddy!" After this N'Sync deal I wouldn't be surprised. After all The New York Post (not some tabloid)reported Lucas' girls are huge N'Sync fans. And yes I know Lynn Hale told LAUNCH.com that Lucas' daughters have nothing to do with it and Lucas himself really had nothing to do with it, and was in fact Rick's call. Well for one Lucas is control freak, if you don't think he's responsible for every inch of the screen in ever frame of his film, your smoking some powerful stuff. Secondly Lucas and his lackey's are anything but trust worthy. Some examples. "This is Star Wars the way Lucas always envisioned it." Oh he would have preferred a cartoon character over Jar Jar and no sense of evil in ANH? I see.. "I always meant for Greedo to fire first." Oh that's why both versions filmed have HAN firing first (see the Behind the Magic CD-ROM)not to mention the humor of Han saying "I bet you have" doesn't work if he doesn't shoot him right after it. Also it's funny neither the screenplay or novelazation have Greedo firing first... Especially since the screenplay and book where finished before the movie, which is why the Jabba scene is in both... "I always intended to do prequels" Oh so that's why Lucas didn't ad the Episode IV at the beginning of ANH until Hamill complained he didn't want to keep doing Star Wars forever. "I never really intended to do three trilogy. I had a story for six movies, the other three where an after thought" Ok he may be right or wrong here. All I know is in numerous old issues of Star Wars mags I have ranging from TIME, to Starlog, People and Famous Monsters Lucas said time again there would be three trilogies with the original being the centerpiece of the saga. SO much for honesty from the Lucas camp. So basically this N'Sync is just the latest in a long line of signs that Lucas is never going to make real Star Wars magic again. It's just another sign he's interested more in selling a product to the general populace the he is creating art. Look at all the press this N'Sync deal is getting. I think that was LUcas' plan and it's the lowest he could have stooped IMO and just another example of his blatant commericilism over art. With TPM he was aiming for pre-school kids and now with AOTC he seems to be aiming for the teeny-bopper crowd. It doesn't matter if the basic story has great potential (which TPM had) and great action scenes (which TPM had.) If the end product has bad structuring, bad dialog, an over-emphasis on special effects and is clearly aiming for a marketable audience... Then all the potential will have be wasted once again. The ironic part of Lucas' new Star Wars is that kids today who dig the prequels will probably go back and watch the original trilogy and think they're boring and say the effects look cheap. "Why is there no wacky guy like Jar Jar, just some 7 foot dog" "Han is 30-something! and Luke looks like this guy in my math class that I hate!" "Vader and Obi-Wan's duel is LAME! Like my grandfathers fighting with their walking sticks" "All the creatures are dudes with masks, how LAME!" "The fans want Star Wars to be something it's not. They want it to be like "The Terminator" No Mr. Lucas, we want it to be like.. Star Wars. More specifically we want the light episodes to be like ANH and the dark episodes to be like 'Empire'. After all people tend to focus more on effects and action then the STORY. Unfortunately so does Lucas anymore. Every time I watch 'From Star Wars to Jedi' now and hear Lucas say "Special Effects with out a story is a pretty boring thing." I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the irony. Oh and I want to point out people often think fans like myself love 'Empire' the most because it's the darkest of the saga but there's more to it then that. I mean yes the darkness is one reason, not because dark is cool. It's because dark is reality and it makes Star Wars more believable. Any writer knows (even an yet-to-be-published hack like me) knows that no one wants to read books or see movies about happy people with perfect lives. We want characters who suffer like we do in life. Not to mention we love 'Empire' for it's lighter elements as well. The snappy dialog that goes back and forth between Han and Leia. The way Yoda pretends to be a demented hermit. The Way R2 gets swallowed and spit out by the swamp creature. The way C-3P0 just generally annoys Han and everyone else. I still cheer every time Artoo fixes the hyperdrive... And I consider the funniest moment in the saga to be when R2 is dragging 3PO and beeps at him and 3PO answers with "Of course I've looked better!!!" Back to the N'Sync thing it isn't jealousy. It's the fact that they did nothing to deserve this other then being made rich and famous by a lot of screaming teen girls. They not actors who are struggling and saying they're in Star Wars will help them out. They're not ILMers who worked hard on the film. They're not even someone famous whose somehow contributed to the Star Wars community like Kevin Smith or "Weird Al". Had Lucas ask one of them to have a bit part I would have thought it really cool. In fact I got a chance to ask "Weird Al" a question a couple years ago and I asked him if he would like to play an alien or some other part in Star Wars and he said he's LOVE to. Heck he could have wrote a tune for the background in the nightclub scene. After writing the wonderful songs Yoda and The Saga Begins at least he would deserve it. Plus all this anti-N'Sync stuff isn't just a "guys hate N'Sync" thing either. More then half of my Star Wars loving friends are women or girls in their late teens and I asked several of them what they though about this and they where al uniformly disgusted. Pretty much anyone who isn't a early teen girl who follows "what's how now" doesn't like N'Sync. Heck if you've even seen them on TV at a concert or being interviewed you'd see how cocky and in-love with themselves they are. Now they get to brag that they OFFICIALLY got to play Jedi. I mean to a non-Star Wars fan I know it's like "big deal" but to someone like myself whose dreamt his whole life about being a Jedi in a Star Wars film it's like a big kick in the nachos that a group of obnoxious Nancy-boys get to be official Jedi. It doesn't matter if we see them in the film or not. Every time they mention N'Sync for now on, or Star Wars for that matter on TV we're going to hear how the lucky N'Sync boys got to play Jedi in AOTC. Makes me want to vomit. Ideally I would have liked to see Lucas have an essay writing contest "Why I love Star Wars" and the top five winners would get flown to the ranch and dressed as Jedi and filed on a blue screen. It would have been a nice way for Lucas to connect to us fans who he so often ignores. I mean we've been the ones buying the toys, books, comics and games for the past twenty-some years and making him rich, not the general masses and yet he seems to have nothing but animosity towards us. And if that's how Lucas sees us loyalist who've stuck through him even during the dark times after ROJ when being a Star Wars fan was uncool. I will still give AOTC a shot and see it when it opens but this is Lucas last chance. If he gives us a movie with Star Wars magic I could forgive him, but if he once again panders to the general populace it'll be all I can take. With the spoiler filled storyline out and facts like Yoda with a saber and Chris Lee as a villian I was starting to think AOTC might actually be good but now I'm worried that this N'Sync deal, as insignifcent as it may seem is a sign of Lucas mindset and that he hadn't learned from his mistakes with TPM. Oh well in four months we shall see. I hope I'm wrong and it kicks so much @$$ I forget about TPM and forget about N'Sync. I'm not holding my breath. It's really hard to imagine a Star Wars movie coming out in 2005 and me not caring when it's been such a major part of my life for 25 years. Oh well. Iguess there's always "Lord of the Rings" sigh "

Well at least they won't have to read 4 months of people saying FOTR was so great it cured there herpes and other ills. I admit I camped overnight for TPM tickets but it was an event, there were 250+ by the time I got there and a 1000 more by time tickets went on sale. It was a party. I saw geeks dressed as HArry Potter characters, I didn't see any hobbits (although a lot of geeks are short stubby and have hair on there feet ( and palms). These guys are even bigger losers than the guys that got boners off the Balrog. I grew up loving Star Wars, (and I have high hopes for AOTC, but Lucas seems to be purposefully trying to piss people off) I went and saw FOTR the day it opened and got tickets online the day before to see it at our biggest of the local multiplex's. I didn't fall in love with it but will buy it the day it comes out on DVD an dwill go see the Two Towers the day it comes out and will got see AOTC, (and might camp out again for the fun of it) but these guys are just publicity seeking idiots. I dunno with a possibility of a split second of screen time by a cloned boy band (I love the irony) or a dwarf tossing joke in an epic. I'd take the split second of N'suck and a dwarf tossing comment over Eopie farts on Jar Jar ANYDAY!

Four and a half months? In Seattle? Last time I checked, that place was hardly known for its warm and dry climates during the late winter/early spring. I was a fan of "Episode One" and even went through the trouble of waiting in line a week before it opened for tickets (to a half empty theater, no less), but that was a one-time deal. I don't care if waiting in line helped reduce the national debt, these two are pretty sad individuals.

Hey, leave the poor guys alone. Not that I have, or ever will, wait for more than 15 minutes in line for a movie. I think it's a great thing that they have this kind of passion in their life for anything, something all of us could learn from (but hopefully direct into more productive pursuits). I just have some questions about logistics: Does one of them always have to be in line to still have their "place"? Do they have tents set up on the sidewalk? Are they allowed to just live on the sidewalk (I know homeless people do, but most cities do actually have vagrance laws that these guys would be in violation of)? From what I hear, Seattle is a rather rainy city, aren't they going to be sitting out in it all the time? Is the theater going to tolerate them using their "facilities" for the next four and a half months? Are they not going to watch any more movies between now and then? And the obvious question that many others have asked, how the hell are they going to fund this operation? Oh, and IamLegolas, please don't repost an eight page talk-back from another talk-back forum. You're wasting my valuable band-width.

I love STAR WARS, all of the films, because frankly they're the first movies I ever saw that gave me a sense of community. When I waited in line for THE PHANTOM MENACE, I waited with people from all walks of life. Doctors. Lawyers. Police Officers. Teachers. Students. One family I waited with was homeschooling their children, and their kids only went to one movie a year. (Poor them.) But they waited that night, the night before tickets went on sale. People played Trivial Pursuit, played lightsaber duels, read the books, and John Williams was blaring from a boombox. I had a shake at Denny's with complete strangers, when I got a little respite from the line (these people held my place for me. How cool is that?) and talked SW for hours. What we hoped to see. And when the movie played a week later, where were the haters? I'm honestly trying to figure that out. They weren't at the screening I saw. I got to know almost everyone I hung out with, about 100 people, and they all came out singing praises and loving it. The first time I even heard ANYTHING about people not liking the film was here in TalkBack. They certainly weren't in my crowd. The film got a STANDING OVATION at the end, for Christ's sake. I'm not calling those who didn't like it nitpickers. I'm just trying to figure out where the hell they were, because I just never saw them. Now, this NSync thing has me disturbed, because no matter how you try to rationalize it, it feels like capitulation. I totally agree with JMYoda's post, for the most part. I still love TPM, but folks, let's get real, it ain't EMPIRE. When I list the best 10 films EVER made, EMPIRE's on there. From everything I've read about Episode II, I'm looking forward to it. I think people are going to like it a lot. I'm sure I'm going to have a lot of fun with it. But George, if you're listening - pay close attention now - Episode III can't just be fun. You're gonna have to beak the PG stigma with it. You're gonna have to go PG-13. It's supposed to be a tragedy. It should be graced with beautiful moments, and it should BREAK OUR HEARTS. George doesn't owe me anything. But dammit, this is what I want. Episode III may not have to be as good as EMPIRE, but it better be better than all the others. It HAS to be. When that mask goes on Anakin's face, we need to feel like we've lost something. When Obi-Wan walks off into the desert (which if I had my way would be the fade out scene for Episode III - how fucking cool and David Lean that would be, and an homage to Guinness too), I want to be crying. And I want to BOLT home and put in ANH. Episode III can't be just fun. It must be Great. Great with a capital G Great. In short, I want it to be the best STAR WARS film ever. And frankly, you're not going to get there with boy bands and Gungans stepping in dogshit. You're going to have to step up. You're going to have to break my heart, and not by selling yourself out. You're going to have to want to offend those parental sensibilities. And frankly, you're going to have to ignore your kids. Talk to Coppola. Talk to Jackson. I don't want dark for darkness's sake. I want loss, and sadness, and a NEW HOPE. Maybe I'm asking too much. But I don't think so. Just read these people. They want to be kids again. You can't make that happen. But for 2 and a half hours, you can make us care. You can make us cry. you can make us remember why we loved film so much in the first place. I suggest a strict diet of David Lean movies, and EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. I have faith in you, man.

I cannot imagine I, or anybody I have personally known over my 25 years of existence, would do this. To tell you the truth, I have a problem waiting in line for 10 minutes to buy a ticket, then wait 10 minutes to buy goodies, and then wait 2 minutes to go to the screen room and sit down. I especially hate it when I am behind parents who bring their kids, because when they are in line they take forever to decide how many kids they have, how much goodies to buy, and how much cash to pull out of their purse. While I respect your knowledge of source material and golden age film text I feel you are rather off base in your assesment of Star Wars as a whole. First let me make this statement that I think everyone needs to understand. To be great a film does not have to reinvent the wheel. Couple this with the addage that all the stories have already been told and I think you will realize that no film story is entirely original. Everything is derivative, wether it be of another film, a classical text, a greek myth etc. What makes films great, especially the modern ones that manage to be, is that they take classical influences and use the tools to tell the story in a new way that excites audiences. Lucas himself has stated that he has many many influences in his films. From Kurosawa to Old Style Serials. He took archetypes and molded them together in his universe of Star Wars to create films that were both exciting and comforting in that we knew these characters, we grew up with them in grade school basically, does Obi-Wan, the old wizard mentor not remind you of Merlin? Or in that same path and I know this is sacriledge for some, does the wise old Gandalf not remind you of Merlin? Did you not enjoy reading the Lord of the Rings because Tolkien used archetypes to help create his universe? Was it not a work of art? Star Wars is much the same. It is part of the genre of Fantasy/Melodrama film. (It is not science fiction, regardless of what some people mistakenly believe.) I of course do not intend to change your views on the subject. I realize you have probably held these views for twenty plus years and they have rooted themselves. But maybe, just maybe if you remember what you enjoyed about those golden age films, then looked at the films of the revisionist age, like Star Wars, you'll realize that regardless of the fact that the roots aren't original, the films are still incredibly enjoyable and well crafted. Just a few thoughts.

This is an art project for him. He is recording his waiting experience for the Guiness Book of Records. He will be there for 4 and a half months. Crazy I know, but he seemed passionate about it. If they're really going for Guinness World of Records, then I could understand. But they're doing this just to impress others that they're dedicated Star Wars fans. One must have no life but compulsive obsession with Star Wars (rivalling LOTR and Star Trek) to qualify as a "geek loser". I loved how MAD's one of last remaining great cartoonists (before MAD sells out to colorized pages and ad $) Sergio Anagones made fun of SW geeks standing in line only to fall asleep in the movie screening. Star Wars Episode I is one of the biggest piece of shites I've ever seen - literally and figuratively. Atrocious dialogue, amateur play production acting and Jar Jar Binks. Yet visual effects was impressive (however obvious CGI fakery can be overwhelming) and quite advanced back at the time of NA release in 1999. I will not waste my life devoted to Star Wars - though I own Star Wars Definitive Collection and SE on laserdisc which I watch maybe once every year - since SW is strictly just a movie franchise and possibly one of the most influential films of all time (for the 1977 film). I'll still see Episode II when it comes out in May and expect the same atrocious dialogue, idiotic subplots and amateur acting that should rival high-profile barely legal porn films. How anybody would be willing to give up job, relationship and logistical social sense just to stand in line four and a half months in advance for Episode II when they should know full well that Episode I is a laughable piece of shit is beyond my comprehension.

The only way I could see someone liking it is if they were deluded by their love for the original trilogy or they're kids who are wowed by any movie with lots of special effects. The first two films are classics but Return Of The Jedi is a mediocre film whose only significance is that it ties up the threads of the continuing storylines (...stomps on Ewok and slowly grinds it under his heel). As for Ep1, there are NO characters to care about. No wonder Liam Neeson was bored to death making the film. He and Ewan McGregor are WASTED in the film. That's what you get when you place even good actors in front of blue-screens acting opposite non-existing characters (...stomps on Jar Jar and slowly grinds it under his heel). So what if there are tons of special effects, the creatures and robots [very boring and non-threatening by the way... they look so puny) constantly in scenes serve to only distract from the fact that there is nothing interesting going on in the story. Also, has there ever been a GOOD prequel? Butch and Sundance:The Early Years?....Nyaaahhhh, I don't think so. I guess it's possible to make a good one but starting out with a pre-pubescent Vader doesn't allow for any interest in your MAIN character as he can't be shown to be evil yet (or wasn't a good enough actor to convey it...ahem). So, all you've got is a kid's adventure tale which isn't very exciting...in fact, it's dull. I have no expectations for Ep2 except that it can't possibly be any worse than Ep1.

A couple of weeks ago Mr. Cranky, of www.mrcranky.com, in his review of LOTR (quite funny BTW) had a poll about which are the worst geeks. Surprisingly, Star Trek won. Now Star Trek geeks are pretty bad (I'm sad to say I was one) but I never heard of a ST fan waiting in line for months to see the next movie. I think most ST fans actually do have jobs, may have families, and could be sane, but this . . . This is pathetic. I'm curious: What does this guy(s) eat? How does he pay for it? How does he sleep? What happens if he is visited in the night? How does he do, well, you know -- 1 and 2? How does he keep from losing the spot? Does he have a Porta Potty somewhere? The endless spiral of mysteries. This is one more reason why people are coming to despise SW and treat it as a complete joke. What a shame.

I agree with the poster who said that this crosses the line between obssessive behavior and flat-out mental illness. Anyone who thinks that spending four months standing in line for a movie is a reasonable idea, needs to be institutionalized and medicated, because there is obviously something seriously wrong with them. Someone needs to step in and say "OK, fellows, time to put down the lightsabers and come back to planet Earth for a while." This isn't cute, or endearing, or delightfully eccentric. It's downright insane. 1/3 of a year waiting for a movie. I'd wait four months in line to buy food for my children, or to donate an organ to a loved one, but anyone who is this obsessed with Star Wars has lost touch with reality, and probably meets the criteria for a dozen different mental diseases. The owners of the movie theatre should call the police on these lunatics. After 09/11 you'd think people would have gained a bit of perspective, but apparently not. If people put 1/10 of the passion and obssessiveness they waste on Star Wars, etc. into something useful, we'd be living in a much better society. Yes, the Empire did great and obvious evil in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. But that was a point when they were in charge already! The Phantom Menace was more of a political move to set up Palpatine on his path to take over. You can't get too flashy and too obvious when you're just starting out on that journey, or you will be noticed way too soon for your own good. And disposed of. I loved how Palpatine manipulated all the characters from behind the scenes and ended up right where he wanted to be. Now THAT is evil- just not the flashy kind! As for Hayden Christensen as Anakin, have you seen "Life as a House"? This kid is a major talent! He has several nominations and/or awards for that performance already. He is going to be a great Anakin, even if he is good looking. (And, I think, a reasonable match for being Luke's dad.

First of all - these bloody talkbacks are too long. Yes I come here more often then I used to, but I am not going to WASTE 4 hours going through a TB to find a few nuggets of information and/or entertainment. Nothing but rants and personal attacks, interspaced with some genuinely interesting opinions, which have no more signifigance than any other. Hearing the same "you are not a true fan because..." arguments gets really old. How many of you joined the Offical SW fan club Before Return of the Jedi came out? I did. Of course I was 8 or 9 at the time, and thought that girls were icky and was afraid of water. We all grow up and tatstes change. when the after movie books started coming out - I avoided them like the plague, because I saw them for what they were: Georege Lucas was looking to make more money off of the franchise items that made his fortune, and allowed others to capitalize off it as well. Yes I have read some of them, and yes they are interesting somewhat and entertaining. But it is still a merchandising ploy to make money. George Lucas got into movies for, among other things, a way to make money. He owns and runs a Large company (several of them), and the primary business of a company is to STAY in business. Why do you think he made the deal to keep the mechandising rights for the first one? Does anyone honestly believe that he was not a "marketing whore" back then - when anything with a "Star Wars" logo sold like hotcakes? Of course he was. There was in interesting Article in the Chicago Tribune some months back that talked about how Modern movie Merchandising as we know it (toys, posters, games, fast food tie-ins, etc etc etc) STARTED with Star Wars WAY back in 1977. So with The Phantom mneace some 3 years ago - George Luca did what he has always done - sold anything and everything connected with his movie to make a profit. A movie is made and distributed for - among other things - a way to make money. Its called a job. An exchange of services for paper currency. Unless you have a very large supply of it - you need to GET said job. Whcih is where these two gentlemen come in. What kinds of jobs do/did they have that allowed them to do this? I am reminded of the amusing Parody that was run on the SCI-FI channel just before The Phantom Menace was released here in the US. The two characters, sitting in lawn chairs, engaged in endless debates about anything and everything about Star Wars. Wiating 4 months, why? In the name of performance art (which was started in concept - in my opinion - by someone desperate to come up with something to justify the loan from NEA they pissed away on fast food, beer, drugs, and parties)? To be first? To show their devotion to a fantasy world? I remember being able to get 2 tickets for the noon showing on opening Day (Wednesday) the Friday before, and the theater was STILL only 3/4 full at most. I saw it in the theater twice, and kept waiting for it to end. It was not that great, and I have to agree with one of the earlier posts about the sense of evil being in there was missing. Lots of death - ON SCREEN death - in the other three, almost none in this one. There were many other flaws I saw, in it, but there were some good points as well. But I will leave that debate for another time. Now that I have had my chance to rant, I will say this. I want to be enthused about the movie, I want to be enthused about ANY movie I pay money to see, enthused enough that I will want to see it again in a movie theater. I am somewhat displeased by the lates cameo casting choice, because if you remember - Samueal L Jackson also lobbied hard for a cameo in The Phantom Menace, and is now one of the MAIN character of Episode 2, with what is rumored to be a spectacular fight scene. I am more displeased by the apparent removal of the tusken Slaughter scene, and the trailer showing Anakin to be a whiny brat. "He was the best star pilot in the galaxy, and a cunning warrior... he was also a good friend." I want to see that character development, and hopefully I will - and hopefully a MUCH better dueling scene between the mains, one where it does not appear that the Villain is LETTING his opponent win because he is by all appearances better than them. I will go see this movie, although my expectations will be considerably lower than they have been. But as with all things - this is just my opinion

I was a fan of Star Wars since June 13th, 1977 (first viewing - 5th birthday)been a huge fan 25 of my 29 years, collected all the toys, still did up until about a month ago, read all the books..you know, the typical Star Wars geek but I started "having a bad feeling" when greedo shot first..then Jar Jar, THEN killing Darth Maul..THEN casting Christopher Lee as the bad ass (let me stop here and say that I like Lee's work, he is a great actor..in most things, but for there to be two VERY old villians in AotC..that just seems stupid to me, Palpy would need someone to carry out his dirty deeds.. COUNT DOOKU--what kind of fucking name is that--is OLDER than Palpy!!)THEN the whole 50's B movie title..THEN the little boy band shit.. Lucas has killed Star Wars IMO.. I didn't stand in line 10 days but I did stand in line 23 hours for TPM but the only line I will be standing in this year will be for "The Two Towers".If these two boys want to stand in line for 4 months..hey, good for them, it is good to have a goal, but I really don't believe that this movie will cause the stir that TPM did, I don't feel that excitement like I did for TPM. I know these two people. I stood in line with them for Episode I at Cinerama. They are very for real, and they are part of the largest fanbase in the world. When I was in line with the Seattle Star Wars fanbase, it was one of the greatest times in the world. Even those who weren't Star Wars fanatics were enjoying the time because we created a community there in the parking lot. I will not come back to read the responses to this post, as I only come to this horrible website when I am referenced to, and then I'm generally very amused by the supreme idiocy that surrounds Harry Knowles and his readers. Now anyone who loves the genre is going to be associated with folks who live like a pack of bums in front of a theatre that cannot verify that it would be shown. Even if one were inclined to do so wouldn't starting the month of may make more sense? I would be warmer you know. And besides it was never stated what charity this was for? Was this verified? How can folks be sure this is done for a legit cause? Why do I get the feeling that any money collected would be used to feed them?

I am not sure what the worst part of this article is... I think I am going to have to go with the part with them describing how Star Wars had influenced their values. Let's just hope it's production values that they are referring to. Oh, BTW, there was an ANTI LOTR moron who declared that it wouldn't hit 200 mil after it's opening weekend. I hope your feel like a schmuck. Maybe you meant 300 mil, but even that little bubble might get burst.

what's with all the hate for these guys? sure, i don't think this movie's going to be all that great, but at least that kid who played anakin isn't gonna be in it. if you think it's stupid to wait in line for four months, then fine, DON'T DO IT! i say if these fellas have the time and ability to sit out in front of a movie theatre for four months, more power to them. they'll become famous (they already have BBC radio folks lookin for them) worldwide, and that's more than I can say for myself. if i could, i'd go start waiting for the two towers right now. these guys obviously take their star wars very seriously, so let them have their fun. star wars does funny things to people...i'm convinced it's gonna suck, but i'll still be there on opening weekend...maybe i'll sneak in after seeing spiderman or something...

God - some people like to open their mouth long before thinking things through, don't they? Losers? Idiots? Hardly - just two guys who plan to make some bucks in the near future. Ever heard of "Starwoids"? With their cameras and journals these guys will have a wealth of data in four months that will no doubt result in at minimum a book and possibily something more. They know that as the film's release date approaches, every newspaper/magazine/radio talk show/TV entertainment news show/local news "human interest" producer will be looking for a Star Wars angle, and all roads will lead to Seattle. You can't buy publicity like that. Face it. Phantom Menace made a gajillion dollars because the only ones who were incredibly disapointed or felt betrayed by the movie were the geeks who make sure their Boba Fett action figure is the last thing they see when they turn off the light each night (and even they will see AOTC by the first weekend). The new one - and I love the joke title someone came up with after the trailer was released: "Anakin's Creek" - will make a gajillion more, in part because of the huge amount of free hype generated this spring. These two guys will get a ton of publicity that will generate interest among publishers and producers eager to make a few bucks off the Star Wars name - and they no doubt plan to exploit that fact. They may not get rich, but they will be ultimately compensated for four - on the surface "wasted" - months of their lives. While these guys are making bank deposits, the people first to jump up and call them losers will be crying on the talkbacks about how terrible ATOC was, while secretly trying to figure out where to get the money to buy the latest series of ATOC action figures. That is where the real joke lies.

How many of us mentioned that we like SW to a non-fan only to have them ask you "were you one of those folks that stood in line?" and then roll their eyes. I've had it had it happen to me several times. How many folks seen the movie "Trekkers(ies?)" which basically perpetuated the stereotype of an over obsessive klingon-constume wearing fan. Is every ST fan like that? Nope. Yet this side is always presented. That is what is happening here, it's turning into the SW equivalent. The so-called human interest story will only perpetuate this stereotype. When asked what they do for a living and if they reply freelance, folks who are not into SW will only associate that with "no-job". And you know what, this stigma will eventually be associated with the rest of us. As far at lucrative deals, aside from a few bad bootleg DVDs and a couple of movies on Atomfilms I didn't see any media darlings or future movie makers emerge. The only thing that emerged was that person who developed the countdown site and he wound up pissing off more folks than having something positive come out of it.

1. I would like to apologize to the entire world on behalf of Seattle for this nonsense. Please understand that these two do not represent Seattle. In fact they are visitors from Eugene, Oregon who have come here to stir up trouble and give us a bad name. There is already talk of having them deported. 2. There is a law in Seattle that you are not allowed to sit on the sidewalk. This was passed as a way to persecute homeless people but to be fair I expect the SPD to enforce it 24 hours on these nerds. 3. It is possible the SPD will shoot them in the face as they did a guy on University Avenue yesterday evening. If these two are black and/or involved in a high speed car chase there will be a higher probability of fatality judging by events of the past year. 4. If anyone would like to start a rival line waiting for Blade 2, please contact me. 5. After Blade 2 I'm gonna cut in line in front of these fuckers. 6. One time I waited in line for alot longer than that, if you count prison as waiting in line. If I had it to do over again, I would not wait in line at all. 7. OK time for a reality check...Yeah theyll be first to see it at 12:01 a.m. on the day it is released. And it took you four months to pull that off. While I'll be alble to wait less than 12 hours and still see it the same fucking day at the same fucking time...Yeah you herd right...Guess what I was able to see X-men (the 12:01 a.m. show) in westwood here in L.A. and I was able to buy a ticket 8 hours before the show...I waited in line about 90 minutes and I was about the 15th person...in line got a great seat to see a great film.....The point being: If you wait four months in line it doesnt make you any more a fan than someone who waited 90 minutes in line...The only thing you proved is you have waaayyyy to much time on your hands...
