...you'll probably get bashed by others but I was very heartened to see "Buffy" and the criminally underrated "Gilmore Girls" as the top two on your list (as they were on mine, not that anybody reads mine, mind you). "GG" quotage would have been nice but I can understand for reasons of space that "Buffy" was the only show you could do that for. I would have included "Futurama" (which proved it not only is the funniest animated series this year but also the one with the most heart), but that's neither here nor there. Extra kudos for putting "Alias" on your list (although lower than 24? C'mon.).

Putting South Park on there is an inspired choice. South Park has passed (if it ever trailed) the Simpsons as the nation's leading social satire. Sad that an animated TV show has to occupy that lofty perch, but so be it.

Herc, though your witty criticism continues to impress and delight me, I'm perpetually dismayed by your willingness to lavish praise on "Andromeda" and the mostly stodgy, disappointing "Enterprise" while seeming to ignore the single best TV space adventure since "Babylon 5": The Sci-Fi Channel's "Farscape."

Forgive me for waving my geek flag here, but "Farscape" truly deserves at least a mention in your year's-best. It's the "Buffy" of sci-fi: fearless, irreverent, brutally unpredictable and always willing to try something new. The cast-- human and Henson-creation alike-- is top-notch: Wayne Pygram's demonic Scorpius is the scariest, most charismatic TV villain since "Homicide"'s Luther Mahoney, and the regal Claudia Black is perhaps one of TV's finest actresses. She shows more talent in a single facial expression than in both of Jolene Blalock's... you get the idea.

Farscape this year was chock full of dazzling moments. The nail-biting heist episode and the riveting battle of wills that concluded it. Scorpion-headed Natira (a.k.a. Frau Blucher) and her taste for human eyes. The jaw-dropping cliffhanger to season 2. The arrival of Jool, TV's most delightfully snotty brat since early Cordelia. The surprise resurrection of one cast member, and the unexpected death of another. The time-travel episode where history keeps getting worse and worse. Scorpius wearing cowboy boots with "Andy" scrawled on the sole. The Hannibal Lecter of outer space. ("Food? Family? No difference.") The show's hero getting split into two identical beings-- and staying that way for most of the season. The Guy Ritchie-esque episode. The claustrophobic love-triangle episode written (well) by star Ben Browder. The partially animated Looney Tunes episode, especially. A massive battleship getting pulled through an artificial wormhole and eaten by a sun. Aeryn's scarred, superbadass mom-from-hell. The startling revalation of Scorpius's true origins and motives. The redemption-in-progress of a former villain. And of course, hot Muppet-on-Muppet action.

If any of this intrigues anyone out there, Sci-Fi's running repeats M-TH at 8 p.m. ET. After a truly sadistic eight-month wait, Sci-Fi begins running new episodes in April.

Herc, in my humble opinion, your time's better spent watching "Farscape" than it is with "Andromeda," "Enterpise," "Smallville," or "Jessica Alba Almost Gets Naked This Week, We Promise." Why not give it a try?

I'm so sick of seeing Buffy as one of the best shows of the year. It's way overrated. So is Six Feet Under. This list looks like every other Best Of 2001 list that I've seen this year. Yes, Alias, 24, Sopranos and the West Wing should all be on there, but what about CSI, Once and Again and The King of Queens? I can't wait until Buffy goes off the air so that I'll stop hearing about it.

The idiots at fox have been pre-empting the show and slowly pulling support of it. Sound familar? NBC did the same thing to Freaks and Geeks. This show is in danger of not being picked up for a second season. The following is from Judd Apatow's site (the creator of Undeclared): We finished shooting our second to last show of the season this past Friday. Amy Poehler from SNL guest starred. She could not be funnier Everyone on the set is sad and confused. Fox says they support the show. My feeling is if we are not on every week without pre-emptions for a full year with a lot of new episodes we are in trouble. We were promised that, but it hasn't worked out that way. It's hard to know why it happens. They only cut two or three episodes from Titus and Grounded for Life. They took five away from us. How else can you interpret that except in the most negative way? The shows are coming out great. The weird part is in January we are showing some shows out of order so I hope it doesn't confuse people too much to see the first day of class episode. I feel bad asking anyone to assist us in our survival. We all have "save the show" fatigue from "Freaks and Geeks." All it takes is a small number of people with a lot of energy to make a big difference. Hopefully it will work out. Anything can happen. We finish our season with a show directed by Jon Favreau a giant guest cameo and a story about Eric and his life away from Lizzie, freaking out wondering how to win her back forever. It really makes me laugh. So, thanks again. We return to the air a week into January. I'd tape them if I were you. Please e-mail Fox at askfox@foxinc.com to show your support for Undeclared. FARSCAPE is a fantastic show, and while I will not complain about it not being on the list, it does bother me that it is never written about by Herc. As a matter of fact, all of the original programming on SciFi goes ignored. While FS is the best on the channel, shows like THE INVISIBLE MAN and FIRST WAVE are strong offerings (I tried to watch LEXX, it just doesn't work for me) once you have given them the opportunity. I introduced my sis and her husband to IM over Christmas, and they were instantly hooked (and they are far from being scifi geeks.) I would just like to see some space devoted to these shows somewhere on the site. But that's just my druthers.**** I am little suprised that CSI was not on the list, and shocked that it was not at least on the Thursday night viewlist. It's pretty much the only thing I watch on that night (after FS reruns) AD out

In regards to Invader Zim, it would seem that Nickelodeon is slowly trying to kill the show.....No new episodes and odd ass time slots make it so that you might not see the show for a couple of weeks, and when you do catch it, it's the same episode as the last one you saw. I don't even know when the damn show comes on anymore...Alls I know is it's usual timeslot has been taken up by an extremely cheap Computer Animated show called Butt Ugly Martians, and boy does it suck.

The 1978 teenage Clark Kent (Jeff East) looked nothing like Christopher Reeve. He's not human, he'll look completely different in 10-20 (earth) years. And Smallville has a unspoken, unwritten non-disclosure clause. ("Hey, you can't fool me, there ain't no Sanity Clause!"). Everyone ALWAYS brings up the eyeglasses thing with Superman... it's not that Lois Lane can't/couldn't see the similarity, but rather she never looked.

OK, I have not really made a top 10 list of favorite TV shows. But there are a small handful of shows I tape every episode (I have two VCR's) and watch over and over: Buffy, Gilmore Girls, 24, West Wing, and Alias are the shows that most often get the watch over and over treatment. Wish I could afford HBO, I have only seen Sorprano's season 1 on DVD.
Once and Again
by nny777
Jan 1st, 2002
04:47:27 PM
Ok, I know this is Herc's list and not mine, but I guess what makes me mad is that I so often agree with him and yet he didn't mention the best show on TV right now anywhere on his list. Now I would put Buffy at number 1 for the year for "The Body" alone, not to mention "The Gift", but besides the excellent "Flooded", Buffy has not been that great this season and actually, I think "All the Way" is the worst episode of Buffy I've ever seen. What should be number 2 on that list and is without a doubt currently the best show this season is Once and Again. I will admit the first half of season 2 was weak being way too after-school special, but they completely redeemed themselves with the last couple months of season 2. I specifically remember a great episode in those last couple months focusing on Aaron that Herc absolutely loved. But this season with most of the new and returning shows not being as good as I hoped, O&A and Angel were the only 2 shows I saw as greatly improved. One of the most amazing things that O&A does is how well it deals with what might be the largest cast on prime-time. I especially loved the second episode this season where all 11 members of the cast were dealt with and given great character development. And in addition to that the second episode also introduced 2 new characters, Lily's boss and the always excellent Eric Stoltz as the drama teacher. What other show or even movie has ever adequately developed 13 characters much less doing it only 45 minutes. There's so many great things to list about O&A from the superb direction to the amazing cast. The child actors on O&A are as good as any I've ever seen, I just wish Zoe would get more to do on the show. It makes me so sad that Once and Again has such a bad timeslot and that it probably won't make it to next season. Oh well, at least they had 3 seasons. That's 2 more seasons than Herzkovitz and Zwick's last 2 shows had, the awesome Relativity and along with Buffy, possibly the greatest show ever on TV, My So-Called Life. I think I'll make another post for what O&A and Angel should replace on that list.

I don't watch West Wing or Sopranos that much, but besides those two I really like every show on Herc's list. But I still don't believe Project Greenlight, Undeclared, and especially Conan belong there. Project Greenlight is OK because at least there's nothing else out there like it. I usually hate non-animated sitcoms, but I've been watching a surprising amount this past season, but even though I absolutely loved Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared is at the bottom of the sitcoms I watch. In order I'd probably list them: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Sex and the City, Malcolm in the Middle, the Tick, Friends, and Undeclared. They have a really good cast and it seems well made, but it's just not funny enough for me. Now as for Conan, he had by far the best talk show on TV back when they were doing Bob Dole. They had many other great skits back then, but Dole! was definitely the most memorable. Ever since, they've been going downhill. I think Louis C.K. leaving and Robert Smigel focusing his attention elsewhere really hurt the skits. And with Andy gone and a serious lack of Norm MacDonald guest appearances, the interviews have been very boring. You said, "sketch comedy gets no funnier than Conan

I'm no conservative either, but hey, I really don't understand the love of the West Wing. I've tried to watch a few eps - but I just can't get into it. Oh, if I had the time to watch ALL the shows on Herc's list, but alas, I only have 24-hours in my day and I don't like to spend all that time in front of a TV. Yikes!!!!!

Am I the only one that watched this series last summer? It was really good. Much better than any other 'reality' crap. I'm surprised that noone has mentioned it. As for Buffy. Yes, it does deserve the top spot. The overrated shows (in my opinion) are Alias and West Wing. West Wing has turned into a liberal propaganda tool and Alias is getting too predictable and unbelievable. Gilmore Girls is about as close to Buffy you can get writing wise... unfortunatly it hit a snag with the whole Max/wedding thing. Other than that it would've been a perfect year for GG.

Unless he can stay the same snarky and sado-masochistic romantic without that chip in his head, no way he deserves Buffy's love. If anything else, his determination to tame Buffy and basically have her on his leash will endanger everyone. As long as she feels deep shame for her attraction to Spike (and if that's all she gets from this, why should she love him at all?), she is not going to have the strength to defeat the Nerd Troika's plans--whatever they are---or even find them. She must be whole again, and if it means slamming a house on Spike (but not killing him....yet), so be it! But for all the other reasons Herc listed, especially the musical that's everything "Moulin Rouge" wishes it could be, the show would be the best. It's just too bad there are no Emmy voters...or Golden Globe voters..who would admit the same thig in broad daylight...or the living.

Ok, I have only watched two or three episodes, and I discovered that it was fake in the third episode (i think it was the third). I don't have it on tape but herc or someone else might... In that episode, one of the missions was for the contestants to jump from the roof of one big truck to another while the trucks were driving on a highway. The problem is that only 2 of the 6 contestants made the jump and they let one girl advance so that they wouldn't only have two people advance to the second stunt. It was very obvious when they showed the girl jump, it was a different person. They let her advance and refilmed someone else (stunt person maybe) completing the jump. Anyone who watches this episode and has a brain would realize that it was fake.

Good list Herc. I'd swap "Ed" and "O&A" for "Angel" and "CSI". Phronk "The Mole" was pulled by Disney/ABC in the states in part due to 9/11. The speculation down here is they will show the rest in the spring as filler, then possibly cancel the series. On the issue of "First Wave": It's been cancelled. The reruns start later this week and will run in order to the series finale. Also "Invisible Man" has been cancelled as well. The sfx budget was so big that Sci-Fi Channel did not want to pony up the money anymore. So there are some answers. Now I have a question. What has happened to "Harvey Birdman: attorney at law" during ADULT SWIM? That was extremly funny and I have not seen it since the third or fouth week after the AS premiere, but it's still plugged in the promos. Anyone?----later-----m

Fear Factor is fake, Survivor is real....

Survivor may reshoot scenes but those reshoots are to get wide shots and closeups of objects to make the challenges more dramatic. The outcome of Survivor is not changed and the show is presented in the way it really happened. In that episode of Fear Factor, the scene was reshot but the outcome wsa also changed... meaning they let a contestant advance on when she clearly DID NOT complete the stunt. I think that the problem with Survivor's ratings has to do with the media's lable of 'reality tv', and all of the dud shows trying to cash in on the Survivor connection.

One of the biggst critics of "Survivor" posted on his website clips showing a challange was faked to allow a contestant to advance. Also the Survivor lawsuit claims the producer lobbied the players not to vote off Rudy, who was a former employee of the producer's. To clarify: ABC, NBC, and FOX can't go after CBS because they also have been treading very close to the legal edge on their shows. It could be true that Rudy was made to stay longer in the first Survivor, but I still don't buy it. No one came to that girl's defense when she made those accusations. The pictures that you are referring to do not indicate that Survivor is staged. I believe that it was the rope pulling contest where the loser falls in the water? From what I heard, that challenge was the best two out of three and the show made it look like it was single elimination, so a picture of Roger winning once does not indicate that he won the other two against Colby.

You're missing the best show on television: "The Knife Collectors' Show" on the "Shop at Home" network. That's right, not QVC, not HSN... not even ValuVision. It's the American Motors of home shopping channels: Shop-At-Home! "The Knife Collector's Show" is on every week... usually very late on a Friday or Saturday; prime "just-back-from-the-bar" viewing time. Near as I can tell, it is televised from a trailer, somewhere outside Murfreesboro. To get there, take a left at the albino kid holding the banjo. It's hosts, Shawn ("no, honestly, I'm not Ken Berry's kid from Mayberry RFD all grown up") Lefler and the mysterious "Mister O'Dell", hawk an astounding and ultimately disturbing collection of giant, grotesque, "kill-your-girlfriend-and-hide -the-body-under-the-trailer" knives, all the while screaming, possibly drunkenly, non-sequiteurs like "Bowies!!!!" and "Big'uns!!!". Occasionally colorful mishaps will occur. Leffler is fond of spinning razor-sharp swords like a whirling Ozark dervish. O'Dell wanders around the set apparently looking for a backdoor so he can go check on the still. People call in and buy case lots of 50 and 100 knives, prompting the viewer to ponder frightening scenarios in the middle of the night. It is excellent television.

Enterprise the best? Its seems pretty bland and simular to the others to me. Other than the pilot, its the same One demensional characters. No, I am not one who hates all Treks since the original show, I am just tired of Berman coming up with another Trek show just so they have a cash cow. Time to give it up. This show doesnt come near to the originality of Farscape. Buffy? I am not impressed with this season. The Musical episode was an exception. The show has turned into a Sam and Diane/ Dave and Maddie thing with Spike and Buffy and I find it highly uninteresting. Six Feet Under? Great show. Never would have lasted a month on network TV and thats why I love it so much. Characters that grow and change. Refreshing really. My favorite new show is Alias. Its ashame more people arent watching this gem. This show has been better than the last few Bond movies for christs sake.

1. Six Feet Under: Hands down the best thing on TV last year. 2. Junkyard Wars: C'mon, making giant pumpkin throwing machines in 10 hours. That's good fucking TV. 3. Iron Chef: Chen Kenichi kicks ass and takes names. Live Giant Octupus. What more do you need. 4. South Park: Hooray for Butters, I agree with Herc, funniest season so far (I wish I could put the Simpson's on this list, but it's been sliding). 5. Malcom in the Middle: consistently cracks me up. 6. Curb Your Enthusiasm: Often painful to watch, but somehow in a good way (the massage jerk-off scene in the finale was classic). 7. The Tick: I just love the character of the Tick, a perfect blend of idiocy and Buddhist serenity. Hilarious. 8. Walking with Prehistoric Beasts: A packed bowl and three hours of giant CGI freaks of nature - a perfect Sunday afternoon (I was dreaming that shit later that night). 9. Friends: What can I say, it's still one of the funniest shows out there. 10. Just Shoot Me: Hated it at first, but it's finally sick enough to make me happy (Spade's love affair with the 90 year old was one of the funniest sequences on TV last year).

I see you put Oz on the list of shows to squander your nights with for Sunday. But I think this show merits so much more attention. Granted it is a brutal show with very brutal subject matter but it is absolutely one of the best shows on television. The characters are written so well and the acting is just amazing. The mere fact they can take Chet from the Weird Science tv show and turn him into something as compelling as Beecher should be proof enough. Honestly, I am not a big fan of Fontana's other stuff on NBC but Oz just kills man. As good as the West Wing is, it isn't even in the same solar system with Oz. And the Soprano's is a great show, but I really find myself looking forward to new Oz episodes more than I do Soprano episodes.
Thanks Herc! GG RULES!! Here are some great moments...

Not too many direct quotes but how about when: Lorelai compared her daughter and herself to ELECTRA WOMAN AND DYNA GIRL; when Lorelai wakes up Rory, who complains that she was busy "taking back Poland"!?!? Great moment also when Christopher came back for her debutante ball (not that great an ep, but LOOK AT RORY IN THAT DRESS!!), Definitely miss: Tristan, Lane (although it appears that she is coming back). This show just gets better and better, and anyone who is a GG hater is missing something in their hearts and I wouldn't want to know them!!

Not that anyone cares, but gee I don't make lists, so why not give it a shot! 1) Gilmore Girls-- Best writing and acting on TV. 2)ALIAS--most FUN, with great action, and a little dash of x-files, without the sci-fi overkill. 3) NFL primetime w/ Chris Berman--got out of the habit of watching all the games long ago, but his commentary is legendary, and the highlights are always exciting to see. 4) 24-- Man, I kick myself if I miss an episode, and am already looking forward to catching the complete arc on DVD eventually. 5) Survivor--guess this list shows how little TV I watch, including this one, but it is still compelling and keeps me tuning in every week regardless of the cast. Best wishes everybody!! :^) CV

Man, you said everything that's been rolling around in my head for months. Farscape gets no respect and yet it is consistently one of the best shows on television, not one of the best scifi shows, one of the best shows, period. As for the list instead of a long-winded debate on the merits of Herc's list I decided why not come up with one of my own, how hard could it be... Overall Best 1. Gilmore Girls - A. Maze. Zing! So funny, so well written and well acted. The best television has to offer, no doubt. 2. The Sopranos - Was this year as good as the first season (?), nope, but it was still damn near perfect entertainment. 3. Sex and the City - I love this show and I'm not even a gay man, which i'm convinced is the intended audience. 4. Farscape - read akaCooper's post, then watch the reruns on Sci-Fi. 5. Felicity - This may be the last season, but at least it will go out on the top of its game (unlike so many others). A tv show with real story growth and character development, fantastic. 6. Alias - The second J.J. Abrams show on my list, I think I'm beginning to feel about this guy the way Herc feels about Joss Whedon. Who would have thought that a grad student by day, secret agent by night show could really be good, not just good, but awesome. Is there a creepier villain than Sloane, or a more lovable geek than Marshall anywhere on tv. Throw in SpyDaddy and Daughter juggling so many secrets it's a wonder their heads don't explode from keeping up with all the lies and the lovely and luscious Anna Espinosa and this thing is the best new show out there and definately one of the overall best. 7. CSI - This was once a tape show for me, but, I realized earlier this year that CSI was actually a lot better than most of the other tripe I kept putting it off to watch. And now I have at least one show in common with most of my family (have I ever mentioned how much I hate most of my family, but not because of CSI). 8. Scrubs - Very, very funny. Finally NBC has found another funny show, it almost makes one forget about Emeril and Inside Schwarz and Cursed (well no not that one). 9. Oz - Dark and dirty and scary. I swear to God I will never ever commit a crime (speeding don't count)for fear that I would end up in a place like Oswald State Pen. Plus, only a show as good as this one can make Luke Perry cool by association. 10. The Cartoon Network - I couldn't pick just one show on the CN so I just chose them all. Honorable Mentions: Witchblade Crossing Jordan 24 Maybe It's Me Law and Order: SVU Smallville That 70s Show King of the Hill Monday Night Football The Bernie Mac Show
Is the Sopranos losing it?

The first season was brilliant and riveting , the second had some good stuff ...but was starting to slow down and the third season , just seemed padded and pointless. It did have three really good episodes , but mostly just went knowhere , veeeeery slowly. It's a though producer/writer/director D.Chase had a plot arc figured out for three seasons maximum , but is stretching things out wildly to get six seasons. The levels of realistic violence and sex , were reduced , and I'm not even sure what replaced them{A table lamp! in the 3rd seasons opener!}Tony no longer visited the shrink , on a regular basis ,didn't actually seem to do any real mobster related stuff and it plot elements, that could have been resolved over two episodes went on forever.By the end of series three , nothing much has changed. It's just treading water ..as though something big..will happen ..but not for ages yet. It's also moving too far away from it's Goodfellas as a tv series origins , to seem interesting anymore, still good , but I can se it getting more predictable and mainstream with each series.

Thank goodness somebody has recognized The Mole as one of the best reality shows on TV. I thought Amazing Race was very exciting & the people interesting. Survivor is also a favorite, but The Mole is different. It's much more intelligent, while at the same time it manipulates the players in a (possibly) sadistic manner. It's fascinating, holds your attention & is never boring. I just don't understand why it hasn't taken off the way Survivor did. Maybe because it isn't as "slick" or advertised as much? Who knows? But, I just want to say to all of you out there, give it a chance when it comes back in the Spring.

... but no less opinionated than the rest of you! i agree with most of herc's and the rest of your lists, but i'm wondering if I'm the only one here who is addicted to TRADING SPACES?! Even tho some of the rooms are ugly, it gives me lots of cool decorating ideas. Anyhow, here's my list of fave shows to watch, in no particular order: Buffy, Angel, Gilmore Girls, Trading Spaces, CSI, Six Feet Under, Family Guy, The Daily Show, Smallville, Alias. I was a latecomer to Alias but caught the marathon on 1/1/02 and I'm so glad I did! That show is my new fave... doesn't hurt that Vaughn is a major hottie! My list of shows that are way overrated (not saying they're bad shows, per se, just not as deserving of all the critical acclaim & Emmys that they get): FRIENDS, West Wing, Sex in the City, The Practice, Frasier.

faves: the Chris Isaak show, law & order, and Judging Amy (i know, it's not even THAT good of a show, but it's a guilty pleasure... plus that Richard T Jones is a real pleasure to look at!) overrated: will & grace, ER, and survivor
