He's halarious. And could be great in a film like this. A little close to Blade, but the plot sounds very cool, i'm going to read the book soon... But Bay and shoot pretty pictures, all you need is a little substance on top and this could be great. Yeah. The only part that sucks now is waiting for it.

I believe Smith could do a good job, thats not the problem. the problem is michael bay with those degrade filters, that crappy tv ad photography, that stupid way of moving the camera, that stupid way of shaking the camera, those embarrasing michael bay moments. this movie should start with half an hour of a man living alone, saying no word, just doing his usual stuff, reading, eating, killing some vampires... no single word, no fancy camera moves, just a quiet movie with no needless dutch angles and quick cutting. peace, quiet, slow pace (oops, something unknown in bay

Shut up about Vincent Dawn for Gods sake, I'm sure its a valid point an all but its getting tired. Will smith isn't a great actor by any stretch. I've seen stills and the trailer and he's still about 30 pounds too light to look right in Ali.

without the blatant racism towards white people. I'm sure there will be an "I Am Legend" MTV Special Movie Event where Will Smith and Carson Daly can explain to the idiot children who don't read what the story is about, while at the same time promoting Will's new hit single based on the movie. To me, this goes right next to the idea of remaking Dawn of the Dead, this is a horrible idea, this in no way is an action story and i'm afraid that's what it's gonna turn into, that they're gonna take out such imporant elements never found in films such as "character development" in favor for special effect pyrotechnics and giving Will Smith some clever one-liners. I hate hollywood.

This was a great book that will be made into a terrible movie. I wish it had never been optioned as a potential film. Furthermore, Will Smith is as much the reason why this film won't work as Bay is. He is NOT "coming into his own as an actor", and he is NOT "Hilarious" (although he'll try to be in this role, and will ruin the film as a result). His "acting" consists of playing every character the same (as himself), he just toned it down a bit for "Six Degrees". He's going to be exactly the same in Ali, with a few Mohamed riffs and a breathy voice. Nobody plays Will Smith like Will Smith. Also, it would be ridiculous for this film to in any way resemble "Blade" as nothing about the book was slick, and that's all Blade was. Who should play Neville in this film? If it has to be a named actor, and it always does with a Hollywood production, why not Guy Pierce? He'd be perfect.

It would be great to see this project go more in the direction of the Matheson novel, and less in the overblown Omega Man one - don't get me wrong, I've worshipped Chuck ever since he and Nova found that sunken and sad Lady Liberty, but I always liked Vincent Price's melancholy last man a bit more... With today's digital effects, imagine how you could convey a world where only one man and terrible plague victims are the only survivors...

...for the tie-in Will Smith rap song! "A-Wikki-Wikki-Wild Wild West" indeed. I don't know what old R&B song he'd cannibalize for this one, but my vote is "I'm Comin' Out" most recently used in that singing navel commercial: "I Am Le- gend! I'm Legend now! I am the only one, left in this whole world..." God willing, there will be action figures and Burger King glasses too. Where exactly did this alleged 'quote' of Will Smith's come from? There is absolutely no source cited here! Did some fanboy just email this 'quote' and tell you to post it? Did you believe him? Could we please have some fucking credibility on this site? ---Is it that hard to email the person back and ask for a source? Did they talk to him personally? Did they read it out of a magazine? Did the little voice in their head tell them about it? If you already know that the source is credible (how are WE as readers supposed to know that?), then PLEASE be responsible and provide some information to establish where the 'scoop' comes from (however vague it must be to 'protect his anonymity')- otherwise it amounts to the same thing as you making it all up (note on slander: I'm NOT accusing you of making it up).

Hey to all you Michael Bay Naysayers! The Man freaking rocks okay. Are we all forgetting Bad Boys?! The Rock!? Oh ye of little faith!!!People freaking like his movies! Yeah they may be marketing machines at times but he does have a superb visual style, and manages to add life to every scene he creates. Is it anywonder so many MILLIONS of people go to his flicks? Damn the cynicism!!!! When I went and saw Armaggeddon people were loving every second, laughing one minute, crying another and all the while oohing and ahhhing at the awesome use of cinema. Not many movies have that power to control an audience like that. He's not Kubrick or Hitchcock he's something new. Our society needs some films that just entertain, and he does a fine job at that.I love his movies and I'll go see anything he makes and if you don't like that that's too freaking bad for you.

Smith In Ali

I don't like Smith much, but I AM looking forward to Ali. For whoever said that Ali himself was not liked very much, all's I can say is: "what?!". Ali is still to this day one of the most worshipped of sports figures, a true living legend. Ali the Movie looks interesting, and Smith seems to be able to capture the ego and bravado of the man, while retainign Ali's basic likability as a person. As far as Smith in I Am Legend, I am less concerned about him in hte lead than I am about Bay as director. Bay sucks, so it matters little who he casts in the lead for the movie. The movie will suck regardless of the cast. Barron out.

"THE PATRIOT which is easily the best Revolutionary War film ever made" Maybe compared to Revolution. Look, Guare himself liked Smith in 6 Degrees. And he's right. Solid work all around (wimp-out of the homosexual kiss aside). As for Bay, I don't know if Bay can do it or not. I really don't. I've yet to see him make a film. He's done cute video sequences that sort of sing... but no film yet. It's clear he WANTS to... so who knows. I have more faith in him than I do in YOU jerks.

This will actualey be third time I am legend will be made into movie. First one was "Last man on earth" with Vincent Price, secound time it was called "Omega Man" with Charlton Heston. I don't hold out high hopes for this version, regardless of who they got to be in lead they will have to make it less bleak, give him a chic, kid and or dog to drive off with at end of film. Hopefuly Will smith's performance in Ali will help him wash the stink of Wild West off his person.

You know what it could amount to in the film? Neville keeping some pet roaches in an empty aquarium or something. When the vamps are sieging his home, he says to the roaches, "wish me luck, boys" or something equally insipid as he strides to the window to kick ass. Or before he goes to bed, he says, "'Night boys. Let me know if you hear any bloodsuckers coming." And of course, when they do come, there's a shot of the roaches scurrying and jumping around. *** For the record, I wouldn't mind seeing the hard-R action interpretation of the story, but it seems to call for that kind of dark, gritty type of action which manages to be stylish BUT with a consistently sombre mood. eg, James Cameron, John McT, Ridley Scott could pull it off. Even Stephen Norrington. But all of Bay's biggest tricks (so far) usually work to the opposite effect. The sustained music video interludes, the spinning camera moves and heroic slow-mo - All of that works against establishing any kind of dark or serious feel. Still, I think Bay could pull it off. If the script is good, all he'd really have to do is ensure there's impressive production design and then simply set the camera down and let things play out. It wouldn't be awesome, but he'd have to work hard to make it suck.
Please Harry...

Stop making excuses for these 2 guys. We all know they are going to f*ck the project up no matter what good intentions they *supposedly* have for it. I realize that's prejudging a movie before it's even made, but with both of these guys track records it's highly unlikely the movie will be any good. We should instead spend our time blasting it like the good little TB'rs we are and hopefully someone in control here can come up with a better combo. Personally, I would like to see this movie made more like a independent type film like MEMENTO or RESERVOIR DOGS. It's a movie that can be made without needing a big budget. The source material has already been used twice, if they are going to bother with a 3rd theatrical retelling, let's do it right!

Polling Data
by Znosaro
Nov 20th, 2001
06:51:23 PM
Last week's poll asked AICN TBers to pick their favorite actor from a list of 32 multiple Oscar winners. On this list, there were 17 women (having collected 37 Oscars) and 15 men (having collected 32 Oscars). However, in the top 16 only 5 women were represented to 11 men. In the bottom 16, 12 women were present to only 4 men. Not only this, the total votes accumulated by female actors was 503, almost half of which (239) were for only two women. 2 male actors got more votes than all of the votes for females combined. Of the 3043 votes cast, less than 1 in 6 were for women. Therefore, despite the roughly equal distribution in poll (veering slightly to the women's advantage) they were vastly under represented in the final tallies. Why? Are female actors inferior to their male counterparts? Does this reflect on the lower quality roles given to women in Hollywood? Are TBers sexist? Can any other conclusions be drawn from the data?

I am seriously considering filing a lawsuit against jerry bruckheimer and michael bay for taking away 3 whole hours of my life in the most horrible way imaginable. I am of course talking about the torture that is pearl harbour. By the way I couldn't walk out of the damned thing because I had seats up front right in the middle in a fully packed large theater. Are you on crack? Get your head out of your mother's ass for a second and listen to reason: Michael Bay sucks. He is a terrible, terrible shit director. How could I be jealous of him? My life is no great shakes as it is, but I would rather be me than Michael Bay. If you can't do something well, than don't do it at all. Bay should not be making movies. There are tons of people who could direct a better movie than a hack like Bay. I am not one of them, but that is irrelevant: I do not pass myself off as a director like Bay does; I am a mvoie fan who knows what he like sin film and what he doesn't. Michael Bay is just terrible. Sorry, it doesn't get any simpler or straightforward than that.

Listen. All you little wackjobs that want to sit there and yell about how bad Michael Bay. I bet you that you were all screaming his praises when the rock came out. I even bet you've seen Armaggedon twice! You guys. This stuff is subjective. Mr. Bay is just trying to tell stories the way he likes them to be heard. He brought a fresh and visual style to the plate, something that hadn't been done. Granted he needs to diversify a bit now, but he is an "artist" no matter how much you protest. Let him be one. It's just like you Metallica heads screaming about them selling out just because they sound different. When was it written artists can't try something new. And why should we hinder them by bashing their asses? If we do that, then nobody will ever try to take a risk and do something new. Lay off!

Will's demographic won't get it? WTF, exactly who is Will's demographic? I consider myself a fan of Smith, and I would certainly get this movie, and so would many others who I expect will go see this movie. Now I really don't care for his rap, well I liked a few songs, but I would never by his music, because it's to commercial for my tastes. Will Smith is a talented actor to me, so I guess it's a matter of opinion. My only hope is that the production team follow the book, and not alter it to much, but as someone mentioned the studio and Bay will won't it to be a Summer blockbuster, so we can expect high action, and exsplosions(spellcheck), but I hope they put a good story with it.

He called me, told me he'd been talking to roaches. I said I could relate. "The thing is, Mav" --Will calls me Mav -- "I have the being alone part down. But there's an important aspect to this role that you can help me with."...I knew exactly what the Prince was talking about. "You want to kill a mutant."..."Well, I learned to box for ALI." "No problem, Prince. You're method these days. We'll go out to the Valley, there's zombies everywhere." I am proud to say that Will Smith has what it takes for this role. He's lived the part of Robert Neville...unless of course those people weren't actually mutations but only looked that way due to massive doses of psychotropic drugs...Nah!Somebody would have bitched by now.

I discovered this book about 5 months ago after I bought a copy of THE OMEGA MAN from blockbuster's used bin. I've since seen that film over 15 times(the best was when I watched it completely shitfaced the weekend after 911). I will say without giving into the "geek-hype" that has always surrounded this book that I think it is one of the best damned books about misery and loneliness ever written. For me though the real problem with every filmed adaptation so far is that they keep skating around the Vampires. The real hook of that book for me(other than the loneliness) was the clinical scientific explanation of Vampires(everything from why they die in sunlight, why only a stake to the heart can kill them to why thing as absurd as crosses and garlic work in fending them off). I loved how Neville goes from being this average working Joe to pathetic, alcoholic last man on earth and finally makes the leap to clinical thinking amateur scientist/killing machine. The twist ending is not only great because he realises that he will become "legend" but also because he realizes that he let his desperation and paranoia turn him into a monster(since he killed all those "living Vampires" who were all just people sick with the disease). The Omega Man is a wonderful film but for different reasons all together. Now, about this Michael Bay/Will Smith stuff. I'd really rather watch and see before I get all "knee-jerk" about it. I've checked most of the talkbacks since Harry first posted this "news" and all I've seen are the typical bitchfest garbage that has poluted the talkbacks in the past few months."I just don't see Neville as a Black Guy, Boo Freekin' Hoo!" Well, I don't think Will Smith is right for this but it's not because he's Black. I think Neville is pretty much an everyman character brought into an extraordinary situation so race really doesn't play a part in it. He IS too young though. There is one actor who would be fantastic in this part because he can do brooding sad sack and he can also do bad-ass killing machine and that man's name is LAWRENCE(NEVER CALL ME LARRY AGAIN)FISHBURNE. I'd cast MICHAEL KEATON AS BEN CORTMAN. JENNIFER BEALES AS VIRGINIA(In the Flashbacks)and CATE BLANCHETT AS RUTH. Secondly, "BOO-HOO Michael Bay is a Talentless Hack." Well, I never liked Bay either but if he's really saying that he wants to evolve past headache inducing "no cut lasts more than 4 seconds" MTV crap he's been doing than I think you shits should quit your belly aching and give him a shot. At least he's trying to grow. He could just keep on working(and believe me he would)making the same garbage. He'd keep on making millions and fucking models at Skybar and you'd all keep bitching and whining and wasting your lives complaining on some crummy website. But he's trying to grow. Can you say that for yourselves? ***Finally, THIS BEER AND CHEETS ON HIS WIFE SHIT HAS TO END! SLEAZY G, my dear old friend and fellow RETINA/TALKBACK LEAGUER I know how much you hated that awful B.S. Batman:Year One script that was so obviously a fake. But the "FILL IN THE BLANK HAS A BEER AND CHEETS ON HIS WIFE" movement has become symbolic of everything that is wrong with the talkbacks nowadays. All you get are these morons with all the wit, irony and intelligence of a rusted tablespoon using that as their subject headline. Most of them at this point don't even know what they're referencing. Come on Sleazy, you're a Retina, an @$$hole. You belong to two of the best damned groups keyboard jockeys ever to post on a message board(eventhough both groups are basically the same except that Vroom leads the Retinas and ironically enough isn't a leaguer)You basically invented the whole Hot Pockets thing. The man has no soul!!! Should we allow a man with no soul to direct movies? (big budget ones at that!) The answer is HELL NO!!! Michael Bay is a hack. Could somebody tell me why (when Pearl Harbor came out) Pearl Harbor had such a huge write-up in Newsweek right before it came out (as if it was this huge event) and then a week later it got panned? It doesn't make sense! Why would a reputable news magazine devote such a huge portion of it's pages to a movie that sucked so hard? Also, is anyone else really annoyed by the press blitz around Pearl Harbor? What a peice of shit that was. They got a frickin aircraft carrier or some shit out to where they were doing the press release from (Hawaii I think) and a bunch of vets (who were obviousely and sadly used.) Not only did this movie insult the senses but it also trivialized a holiday people all over this country observe. Why do these greedy Hollywood shitheads attempt to sell phony sentiment back to America? Anything real that Hollywood touches now presently is cursed and trivialized by their inability to do their subject matter justice and for that I am mad, mad at Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay for doing that to America. They must think the people of America are idiots and will enjoy a revisionist history version of WWII and a cheesy love story (just like the way they loved Titanic, hopefully, eh Michael...) So I don't know how anyone can be a fan of Michael Bay while he clearly has a low opinion of you.

"Go to michaelbay.com and read that Bay doesn't use filters, he just knows how to light". Ok, do I have to go out and rent Bad Boys or The Rock to point exact shots with filters on them? The image you get filtering the lens has nothing to do wiht lighting, is a very specific and very recognizable, a gradient usually in the top part of the frame that vanishes as it goes down. A effect that you can clearly see because Mr. Bay can

Remember CAPTAIN AMERICA & THE HACKJOBS: Hawkfire (the hothead), Moongoose (the wise ass), Sna-Fu (the spiritual one) and The Chick (the breasted one). Then there was GREEN LANTERN & THE ACTS OF DESPERATION: Flame Hawk (the hothead), Skidmark (the wise ass), Third Eye (the spiritual leader) and The Babe (the breasted one). And let us not forget the shortlived but forgotten SPAWN & THE TODD-SQUAD: Hawk Blaze (the hothead), Jabberwock (the wise-ass), Indian Burn (the spiritual leader) and the Contortionist (the breasted one).

...the were strong, spunky, real women of the '70s who could hold their own with the male heros. Particuarily when Chris Claremont wrote these books and each character became team leader winning the respect and subservience of Captain America, Green Lantern and Spawn. As Stan Lee said, "When I created these characters that were created by Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, I figured they were there just to give the True Believers something to with their hands between fight scenes. Who knew?"
My ideal director for this

My ideal director would probably be Alex Proyas. "The Crow", "Dark City", this guy can create a mood. And aside from the performance by however plays Neville, the tone of this film is going to be what makes or breaks it for me. I can't see Bay toning it down enough to pull this off. And I really can't see Will Smith as Neville. I've read the book and Mark Protosevich's first screenplay. I like Neville in the book better. A drinker, a smoker, none of the 4000 weapons and medical center laying around his house. Yeah, my picks are Proyas as director and Kieffer Sutherland as Neville.
Will Smith should have a beer and cheet on Michael Bay...

Fuck Michael Bay. Now that F. Gary Gray's not attatched to The Crowded Room, get him to direct the movie. He can handle action scenes, characters, and a story - I think he just needs the right script to really nail an action film. The Negotiator wasn't terrific, but there's no spastic work, an attention to detail and character lacking in Bay's ADD riddled movies. And at the same time they can stick it to the world by inserting all sorts of subtext about how the last man on earth is so black lightning bugs follow him in the day! Fuck, even the Hughes Brothers, as bad as From Hell was, could do a better job... And just for once I'd like to see a huge movie directed by a black man. You know what this all is, right? It's Will Smith's lamentation that he turned down the Matrix.

But only when I'm digging through the ash tray looking for one, and can't find it. But that doesn't make me qualified to direct or act in I am Legend. The Rock, Pearl Harbor, and for DAMN SURE Armageddon(a bigger condescending piece of shit has yet to be made) were just OK. Oh I forgot about Wild Wild West ( Armageddon was better????) Anyhow, they've got their work cut out for them. Put up or shut up time, there's nothing I'd like better than for them to prove us wrong.
Will Smith is just Martin Lawrence

Hey Magic_Ninja Rather than make light of a bad situation that most of us deal with on a daily basis would you rather us pick up an automatic weapon and indiscriminantly wipe out the first white person we come across. Okay, so Martin Lawrence is a stepin-fetchit, bugg-eyed embarassment most of the time, but instead of taking his crap personally why don't you employ some of the strategies that good black parents instill in their children like realizing that if the jokes, insults don't apply to you then just ignore them. There are still many, many racist white people out there, and a lot of others who aren't. Feeling a little guilty are we???? You, however sound like one of those people who's always bitching about reverse racism, so let's dissect this. Generally white racism comes from a feeling of superiority, whereas what black people do is generally out of frustration, anger, and in reaction to white racism. Okay, so in a perfect world there would be genuinely racist black people(and everyone else for that matter), but for the most part that is not the case. Why don't you go watch a Greg Kinnear movie and deal with it.

I have good and bad feelings about Will Smith's movies, but if you've ever read the book, the Arnie-fication of the main character would blow chunks (no offense arnie, it's just not you). Will Smith could make the original vision of the book come alive...and that would make it a great movie. The story rocks, just film it as written!

i don't want to make a racial thing about this at all, i'm just stating the simple and well known fact that martin lawrence is a complete racist peice of shit. how the hell do you get the idea i complain about reverse racism from that one little fact? wait, i forgot, if you're not a minority you can't complain about racism, my bad.

Hey lostvegabrother sounds like you live in denial! Deep down inside lives a true Michael Bay fan! I just feel bad that you have yet to realize it. You probably have the criterion DVD's of MB's movies don't you!?! Yeah I thought so. I hope you lie in bed at night knowing that the money you spent on Armaggedon probably somewhere along the line came to help finance Pearl Harbor and your $10 is sitting in Michael Bay's wallet right now! What do you think about that!?! (like I really give a crap!)Anyways Bad Boys is the best cop buddy movie ever made, the Rock rocks, Pearl Harbor is friggin awesome (I saw it 3 times punk A!) and you're probably one of those wierdos that thought that Deep Impact was superior to Armageddon weren't you!?! I thought so.

I just read I Am Legend for the first time, after reading this story. So I went into it wondering if this is a Will Smith role...and I didn't see any reason why it could not be. Hell, I don't even see the need for a rewrite, there's nothing specifically ethnospecific about Neville. Sure, Smith has an 'image', but so did most star actors when they started out. Obviously, if he's serious about this role, he wants to diversify - a smart career move - and Will has what Neville desperately needs: charisma. Let's face it, a big budget, 2 hour introspective movie with very little dialogue is going to need a watchable actor in the central role, and Will is watchable if nothing else. *** For the record, I thought the scientific explanation of vampirism bogged the novel down, and I hope they downplay it in the movie. For me, what really grabbed my attention was the twisted pseudo-friendship between Robert and Ben. And I think THAT would play really well on the screen. *** And now, a simple request. Would all the talkbackers who come online to post thoughtless, hate-spewing, negative idiocy please do the world a favour and chemically sterilize yourselves before you procreate. I know it's too late to do anything about your existence, but it would make the world a better place for the next generation. Thank you.

Dear God, unless I am mistaken, none of us including the rotund but munificent benifactor of this haven of photonic expression, have ANY REAL OR IMAGINEDEXPERIENCE at acting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean seriously, as long as I have been a movie freak, I never thought that in the end, I can sit there and tell Will Smith that , "WEll, gee Will...I really thought your use of subtle subtext could of used a bit more undreatanding, blah, blah, blah, blah,....b.fg.d,slkythgluishgp iufdghpuhgipsuhgriuarhgouRWHGU 9ISAHIGUSTHDIUGFHSUITDGHOUET, AND ETC.At any rate let me resolve his now as such, Like the role or movie or do not. However, until you do or do not, who the hell are you and your weak ass did'nt do a goddamn thing ass? Oh I do want hear something. Especially from you little still in your your mother's cellars little bitches. including our benefactor. Produce or just up fucko, give up sneaks and etc, or write a screenplay andthen have it made and then have the legitimate ground to critique on. Thank you , humbly.

"Automatic Double! It's not a ground rule double it's an automatic double! Ground rule doubles exist but not in the way you're fucking thinking!" Well, perhaps I paraphrase, but, that's the core of what he was saying, really. I know, I know, but sometimes you've just gotta stand up for what you believe in...(sigh)...I'll just go back to huddling in my hole then, yes?
