I saw the trailer on the Final Fantasy disk and wanted to see it ASAP, but since I don't understand Japanese, I couldn't tell if it was an upcoming theatrical release or DVD.
wow.

whadda ya know, it's a whole genre unto itself, a whole big chunk of popular culture, entirely based on Battle of the Planets, and they didn't have to change a thing to get it where it is today. sorry to be such an anime nay-sayer, but I like my Japanese monsters to be men in big rubber suits, and I like my filth a little filthier than anime porn. Akira, shmakira.
Actually, the work has been changed quite a bit ...

... not only was the original manga published in 1949, but it was a pretty short story .. which is one of the reasons it hadn't been adapted for animation until now. In fact, the character of Rock was never in Tezuka's manga; he and the entire subplot of his private war against the androids are entirely an Otomo/Taro creation, primarily to "update the story for more modern sensibilities," but in the 'spirit' of how Tezuka 'might' have done it. There was a pretty funny interview with the two directors where they pretty much agreed that Tezuka wouldn't have approved of their addition to the story, and they seemed very sheepish about that. ^_^ And it may be quibbling a bit, but the ending described might 'reek' of AKIRA rather than Otomo ... it's not as though -everything- the man has done ends with mass destruction & man/machine melding. The same may be said for the Bluth reference; the guy has done exactly one film that over-used CGI, and it wasn't even a film that he directed entirely (he'd inherited TITAN A.E. after over a year of development under Art Vitello) .. given his many other films that don't have this characteristic, I don't think it fair to brand every abuse of the form with Bluth's name ... the "over-animation" comment is valid, however; he is well-known for that! ^_^
Does the love rise from the heartless robots?

I loved Metropolis. The *actual* Metropolis. The 1927 Metropolis. Now don't get me wrong, I also loved Bram Stoker's novel introducing Dracula, and have proceeded to love many movies based on very Stokerian vampires. I'm not a freakish-prude purist. But naming the manga, and continuing the unfair exploitation of Fritz Lang's title of his signature world... seems too much. Hell, make a movie inspired by the manga inspired by Metropolis. But unless it's a remake... don't call it 'Metropolis'! That would be like naming every Western 'Stagecoach'. Even Bladerunner had the decency not to tout itself 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep', because that would be false advertising. It's a different product. Yeesh. I've been waiting so many years for a hypermodern Metropolis - but this isn't it. The long wait continues. That said, I love the marketing around this film. I simply cracked up when I saw the box containing randomized mini-model-kits loudly querying the passers-by "Does the love rise from the heartless robots?" That has to be the best slogan ever, even if the price tag for those suckers is way too high.

If you haven't seen this movie and you like anime then you should go see it because you'll probably enjoy it. It looks beautiful and it's about as intellectual as you would expect a japanese anime based on metropolis to be. When is Metropolis(Fritz Lang's version) going to come out on DVD with a good soundtrack(not one done by Queen or Trent Reznor)? I guess I could always make my own soundtrack...
Mmm...Metropolis.

Although initially apprehensive over anything described as "Bluthish", I'm looking forward to Metropolis. Does anyone know if they're are any theatrical release anime in the DC area? Email me. I must see this film!
