The Box art scared me...........

I really wanted to pick this movie up, but looking at the box art it gave me a Class of 1984 meets River's Edge as packaged by the Cantonese guys who released the first editions of the Chow Yun Fat movies on DVD. It looked really cheap, and, despite the View Askiew pedigree I was still less than confident, so I picked up the three Depalma releases that had come out instead. After reading your review, however, I may have made the wrong decision, because while Carrie, Blow Out and Dressed to Kill were stacked en masse in the horror section, this one was tucked away alone on a shelf in the indies corner and probably gone by now. Oh well, View Askiew website here I come! Thanks for giving me a clue as to what to expect from the film, since the box art and description REALLY serves as a consumer turn-off!
Funny you should mention A Better Place, I watched it yesterday!

Mysterio, great review. I couldnt believe that you were reviewing this disc yesterday because, on a chance trip to Kims here in NY, i saw this disc and immediately picked it up. After popping it into my PS2, I told my friends to have dinner without me because I just HAD to finish it. Its a very impressive first effort by Pereina and a truly powerful film. The only downside to me renting it yesterday is that now i MUST buy it so that I can distribute it amoungst my friends and help them discover this diamond in the rough. I urge everyone to check out this film, its quite memorable.
New "Askewniverse" disks... why?

What's the point of the new "Askewniverse" disks? Excluding the original bare-bones Dogma disk, they're all really packed with extra features. Of course, the Chasing Amy DVD is an actual Criterion release, but all the disks have the same massive amount of extra content that you find on most Criterion disks. Since most of us bought the films when they first came out on VHS or LD (the first three films at least), and then again when the original DVDs came out, I don't know how many of us are going to shell out for Clerks a third time. Hell, I'd rather Kevin Smith put all of his extra energy into pressuring Epitome (formerly Playing With Time) productions into releasing complete Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High (plus School's Out) DVD box sets, complete with a Kevin Smith and Pat Mastroianni commentary track. ______________________________ ____ Steve Brandon Tenchi@canada.com

Glad to finally see a release for 'A Better Place'...

... because I may even be in it. I was on set at the high school location with my friend, Tony Mandile (he did make-up effects.) The extra who was to play the coach that breaks up the locker room fight had to leave after a couple of takes. Vincent needed coverage for this scene and decided to shoot it again from the top but he needed a coach. Being one of the oldest people on set (32) I was asked to play the two-line part. I signed a release and everything, so when you watch 'A Better Place' if you notice that the coach who breaks up the locker room fight is a Tim Robbins-looking dude ( so I'm sometimes told ) I'M A FUCKIN' STAR, BABY !!
Locker room fights & 10th anniversary DVDs

Re: the locker room fight- sorry, I remember you from the shoot but your scene got cut during editing, DOH! As for the 10th Anniversary Edition of CLERKS, a lot could be done to improve that DVD since it's basically just a direct copy of the old laserdisc release. A new anmorphic transfer, a new retrospective documentary talking about both the making of the film & it's impact on the indie film scene, a retrospective commentary, better quality deleted scenes, there's even an alternate soundtrack of nothing but music by a local band (only two of their songs survived the final mix). Of all the DVDs, CLERKS could be much improved with a new edition IMHO in time for it's 10th anniversary. Vincent
Funny you should mention you watched it yesterday, I don't care!
