Hey folks, Harry here. I've been out of the loop, dealing with forwarding people to this page, till we get that front page fixed. Let's pray that it is today!!! However, this is one of those films that A.B. King will kiss the site for reporting further on, so I'll get out of A.B.'s way and let take it from here.... beware of some moderate spoilers.... here ya go...
Hi Harry, "Mysterio" here.
Recently had another script "slipped" my way from one of my proteges. The script in question this time out is, "THE SIXTH DAY".
So without further delay, here we go.
"And on the sixth day, God created man." - Genesis 1:31
That quote sets the eerie tone as it opens the intriguing sci-fi action thriller, "The Sixth Day".
In the not too distant future, the science of cloning has advanced to a point where it has become an integral part of our lives. Certain aspects of cloning have been legalized. Whether it's organ parts or family pets, all are now a possibility and have been made legal by the government, with the exception of human cloning.
But if certain high-powered investment backers have their way, that may soon change.
It seems that the corporation responsible for the cloning research has been doing some experiments on human cloning for some time now, unbeknownst to most. And now they've come to a point where they've perfected it, to where you can't tell the original from the duplicate; not only apart from looks, but also memories and mannerisms.
But their plans may be revealed if they don't stop one man from exposing them. That man is ADAM GIBSON. Now Adam is a typical loving family man, who lands himself in the right place at the wrong time. You see, having escaped a life-threatening accident by chance, he is quickly made aware that something is definitely wrong when he finally arrives home, on the eve of his birthday, to observe a room full of party-goers and HIMSELF through the front window. Celebration in full swing.
Confused and aghast at the sight, several ominous looking agents, lead by a man named MARSHAL, step out and ask Adam to come into the van with them. Cautious, Adam questions them only to soon flee from them when they attempt to kill him, and a manhunt soon begins.
Unsure of exactly why he's being chased and shot at, Adam turns the odds around in his favor, and kills off certain members of this mysterious "hit squad", only to find them cloned and soon chasing him down again.
A bit like "The Fugitive" he meets several characters who give him the clues and pieces of information he needs to reveal the truth of what happened to him and the goings-on behind closed doors at the lab. Including the grand plan of things to come, and at what price.
Adam comes to learn of individuals whom have since died, and been cloned and replaced back into society because it benefits certain individuals. And where, if successfully appealed, the science could be made available to those who could afford to bring back their loved ones, and even themselves. Cheat death entirely. Science can indeed by scary, and the way it's described in the script, it is. Even if the best intentions were originally set forth, science in the wrong hands can lead to dire future consequences.
Not wanting to give too much away, the script in quite clever in setting things up, and keeping the action and pace going and the reader guessing with each turn. It's an intelligent piece, that like such recent films as "The Matrix" and "The Sixth Sense" gives you enough twists and turns and sci-fi smarts that it's not insulting and doesn't just end up your standard shoot 'em up sci-fi actioner. Although there's plenty of that. But there's more. It's a cautionary tale. There's also political, moral and social issues questioned within the context between science and mankind, and those who wish to play God, and the responsibility and repercussions that go along with it.
It's interesting to note that at one point Joe Dante was slated to direct, but has since been replaced by Roger Spottiswood, with Arnold Schwarzenegger set to play Adam, and cameras rolling in November. But not before it goes through the hands of being doctored up by John Sayles which definitely should make things interesting.
All in all it's a pretty damn cool script, and should make a pretty damn cool film to boot.
