Ok - Harry here again... You know how I was trying to make a stretch with a YOUTUBE video to Darren Aronofsky's upcoming ROBOCOP movie? Well... I'd say ROBOCOP following THE WRESTLER makes a shitload of sense...

Hey folks, Harry here... What the fuck? Ok - first off, I'll acknowledge, it is in fact a SLOW NEWS DAY. But this is Cool in a what the fuck kinda way. Plus it gives us all a chance to discuss having watched Darren Aronofsky's THE WRESTLER - how we feel he'll approach ROBOCOP. Aren't you kinda curious as hell what he'll do? I had a source on the inside state to me and the other AICNers that Darren's ROBOCOP will have balls, STEEL BALLS. And my instant cynical brain thought... "God, I hope not in a Joel Schumacher mid- to late 90s kinda way!" But I got what he meant, he meant this wasn't going to be a pussy version of ROBOCOP - my biggest curiousity about the film isn't so much the juvenile inquiries into whether it'll meet some expectant Gore quotient or Tits ratio, but rather... Will Darren put ROBOCOP in a more realistic, less openly black satire mode?

One of the myriad of reasons that the sequels didn't work was that 1) Paul Verhoeven didn't return - and 2) that kind of Black Satire is something that Paul Verhoeven does that it seems nobody else in the industry is really capable of. As is evidenced by the ROBOCOP and STARSHIP TROOPERS sequels. Sure, the writers sometimes wrote it - and the satire in theory was there, it just wasn't executed so well.

That said, I haven't seen a single bit of winking at the camera and the audience from DARREN ARONOFSKY. And honestly, I'm not sure I want to. Imagine if he drops the overt humor and goes serious with this story. Creating a Science Fiction HARD BOILED with Robocop as our Chow Yun Fat (no, not jumping with two guns through bird feathers). A film where he is created by a corporation or government to address the spiking concern of an increasingly violent impoverished inner city. OR would Robocop fall apart in that sort of serious environment. Does Robocop need this:

In order to be palatable? In the Japanese Anime universe - the "Ghost in the Shell" of cybernetic law enforcement has been done seriously with great success, but would that play domestically? I think it would and I think that's exactly what I'd like to see Darren Aronofsky do. To create a Robocop film that plays it all straight and creates a science fiction universe that he belongs and works in. Maybe Robocop isn't the first of his kind, maybe he's the only one that remembered who he was? Who knows. What do you want out of a new direction on ROBOCOP - and damn, I sure did get serious on a post that was supposed to be about a crazy Korean Fried Chicken Commercial with ROBOCOP in it. But... well, I take my ROBOCOP seriously and would love to see Darren do the same.
