What’s it called?
“Robbing Hood.”
Who’s responsible?
Teleplay is credited to Jim Danger Gray, whose only prior screenwriting credit is the antepenultimate episode of “Crossing Jordan.” Danger is his middle name.
What says ABC?
“Ned, Chuck and Emerson investigate the case of a dead millionaire (Shelley Berman) who may have been murdered by a latter-day Robin Hood (Danny Comden) ... or his much-younger money grubbing widow (Jennifer Elise Cox). Meanwhile, Lily fumes as the suspicious Dwight Dixon (Stephen Root) begins romancing clueless Vivian. Guest starring in ‘Robbing Hood’ are Stephen Root as Dwight Dixon, Ethan Phillips as Daniel Hill, Shelley Berman as Gustav, Jennifer Elise Cox as Elise, Jamison Yang as Tam Phong and Danny Comden as Rob Wright.”
The big news?
Dwight learns something quite important about the brunette waitress at the Pie Hole.
What else is ABC not telling us?
Chuck suggests to a horrified Ned that he wake her dead dad to ask what’s going on with the timepiece Dwight covets.
Do we learn why Dwight Dixon is so hot for that watch?
Not with any specificity.
Does Ned find his dad?
Not this week.
Does Emerson find his daughter?
Not this week.
What’s doing with Ned’s magician brothers?
They and their eyebrows conjure only offscreen this week.
What’s great?
Jennifer Elise Cox, whom I liked also as Jan Brady. Chenoweth generally and her Eva Gabor disguise in particular. McBride generally and Emerson’s Joe-The-Plumberesque disdain for the robbing hood’s plans in particular. Olive’s nervous description of Manuel, the big non-existent cholo janitor. Olive’s subsequent pie binge. The bunny, the snake and the raccoons. Ned, desperate not to re-enact the half-dog scene from “Return of the Living Dead.” The size of Emerson’s adding machine. “But Vivian will be right down.”
What’s not so great?
Somebody just informed me they’re tearing down the Pie Hole set.
How does it end, spoiler-boy?
Yet another grave is cracked!
“L-Prime” liked it not as much:
What does the Guide say?
“When a millionaire is murdered, the prime suspects include a modern-day Robin Hood (Danny Comden) and the deceased's scheming, much younger widow (Jennifer Elise Cox). Meanwhile, Lily is repulsed by Dwight's courtship of an oblivious Vivian.”
Is the modern day Robin Hood as whimsical as it sounds?
Sadly, no. We’re back to a weak mystery. Possibly one of the weakest of the series. I found myself really not caring about who killed who this week. It was mainly a bit of an excuse to end up back at Aunts Lily and Vivian’s house.
Really, that bad?
I don’t know whether it was just my ennui in knowing that they finally crap-canned the whole deal making me bitter now, or if it was really weak. I’m inclined to think the latter.
But Dwight Dixon unearthed an empty coffin last week? What does he know?
He comes across a photo of the deceased Lonely Tourist Charlotte Charles and makes a connection that may not be good for our heroes.
What do our flatfoots do when they get wind of Mr. Dixon?
They are concerned, naturally. They decide that there’s one person who can answer their questions about him, but there may be six feet of dirt separating them from him.
Gravedigging? Again?
Yep, sure is.
What about Emerson’s daughter? It seems to have fallen by the wayside.
Seems to have indeed. No mention yet again.
What about the brothers magical?
Also absent, as is most talk of Ned’s father.
What’s good?
“That would be a waste of religion.”; the fact that the corpse was still fully encumbered with chandelier in the morgue; “They want mimosas instead!”; Ned's “Oh no” on entering the trophy room.; “I love that you don't know that.” “It's a kind of raffle.” “Of the porno variety.” “Ohhhhh, so back to the case.”; “I like layers.” “Missed it by that much.”; “Sounds like one of those feminine conversations you need to be having with your lady friends.”; “I'm out of counter space, so I'm stress-baking in my head.”; “I'm channeling fear into anger.” “Anger leads to hate.” “And hate leads to stress-banking those you love.”; “Stakeouts are only fun if there are binoculars for everyone.”; “Oh, I was still really wrong about what that was.”
What’s not?
This may have been one of the weakest Daisies so far. Sadly not one that will bring in anyone new if the Hail Mary “Maybe it’s not completely dead if ratings pick up” rumours that were swirling about one of the three shows ABC canned last week were true, which they probably weren’t anyway. The mystery was weak, guest stars ordinary (not even the crazy old judge from Boston Legal could help matters), and the overarching plot basically took a week of exposition and scheming and stretched it into a black screen cliffhanger that really didn’t feel like a natural end to the hour.
How does it end, Isaiah Spoilerman?
Another pine box is opened. Screen cuts to black.
8 p.m. Wednesday. ABC.
