I am – Hercules!!

The third, final and worst season of the original Kirk-Spock “Star Trek” TV series suffered from budget shortages and the installation of outsider Fred Freiberger (“Rawhide”) as the series’ showrunner. (Series creator Gene Roddenberry stepped away at the end of season two to explore showbiz opportunities he thought might have more of a future.) Freiberger was the guy who thought episodes like “The Trouble With Tribbles” and “I, Mudd” were too comical and aborted their planned third-season sequels.
While this set does incorporate all of the new digital special effects, this is not an HD set. These are standard-definition DVDs, and release dates for HD Blu-ray editions of all Kirk-Spock episodes will almost certainly be announced within the next few months.
Another reason not to buy? Pop-up text commentary by Michael and Denise Okuda for “The Savage Curtain” and “Turnabout Intruder” on the 2004 DVDs is apparently not included on this new set!
Mind you, if you’ve no intention of upgrading to HD in the near future, there are plenty of swell third-season installments here, among them “The Paradise Syndrome,” “Wink Of An Eye,” “Day Of The Dove,” “Elaan of Troyius.”
EPISODES:

* “Spock’s Brain.” Hot alien girls pull Spock’s brain out of his skull to run their planet. Gene L. Coon (“Bread and Circuses”) wrote four season-three episodes, including this one, and had his name taken off all four.

* “The Enterprise Incident.” Kirk puts on Spock ears and Spock seduces a Romulan commander to steal a cloaking device. Written by D.C. Fontana (“The Ultimate Computer”).
* “The Paradise Syndrome.” After an alien device saps Kirk’s memories, he becomes god to a tribe of doomed Space Indians. Written by Margaret Armen (“The Gamesters of Triskelion”).
* “And The Children Shall Lead.” The crew investigates a planet where all the adults have killed themselves. This was the episode guest starring attorney Melvin Belli, who found himself shortly thereafter lending advice to the Zodiac killer. Written by Marvin Chomsky (“The Wild Wild West”).
* “Is There In Truth No Beauty?” The Enterprise brings aboard Ambassador Kolos, an alien so ugly it drives anyone who looks at it insane. Written by somebody named Jean Lisette Aroeste.
* “Spectre of The Gun.” Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty and Chekov are punished for trespassing by having to fight on the losing side of the gunfight at the OK Corral. Written by Gene Coon (though the teleplay is credited to “Lee Cronin”).
* “Day of the Dove.” An alien that feeds on anger sticks a bunch of Klingons and archaic weapons on the Enterprise. Michael Ansara plays my favorite Klingon, Kang. Written by Marvin Chomsky (“And The Children Shall Lead”).
* “For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky.” The Enterprise comes across a race that didn’t get the memo that their planet is actually a Death Star-size spaceship. Written by Hendrik Vollaerts (“Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea”).

* “The Tholian Web.” After Kirk and The Defiant get sucked into another dimension (which turned out to be the Jonathan Archer-era Mirror Universe), hostile extraterrestrials slowly weave a space cage around the Enterprise. Written by Chet Richards and Judy Burns (“The FBI”).
* “Plato’s Stepchilden.” The crew meets a group of very old and powerful telekinetics determined to make Kirk snog a black girl. Written by Meyer Dolinsky (“The Invaders”).
* “Wink of an Eye.” A group of superspeedy extraterrestrials decide they need Kirk’s seed to continue their race. Written by Gene L. Coon (using the fake name Lee Cronin) & Arthur Heinemann (“The FBI”).
* “The Empath.” Talosian-like alien scientists experiment on Kirk, Spock, McCoy and a strange mute girl. Written by somebody named Joyce Muskat.
* “Elaan of Troyius.” An alien princess on her way to meet her future husband uses her tears to turn Kirk into her sex slave. The Dohlman of Elas was played by French-Vietnamese actress France Nuyen, who earlier bedded Marlon Brando, married Robert Culp and played a prostitute opposite William Shatner in a 1958 Broadway production of “The World of Suzie Wong.” (Shatner and Nuyen would reteam at least one more time in the third episode of the third season of “Kung Fu.”) The hulking Dick Durock, who played one of her guards, went on to become Swamp Thing. Written and directed by John Meredyth Lucas (“Patterns of Force”).
* “Whom Gods Destroy.” A nutcase shapeshifter takes over his asylum. Keye Luke, soon destined to play Master Po on “Kung Fu,” plays Dr. Donald Corey. Written by Lee Erwin (“The Big Valley”).
* “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield.” Powerful warring aliens cannot be convinced that skin color is unimportant. Written by Gene Coon (using the fake name Lee Cronin).
* “The Mark of Gideon.” Kirk finds himself on an empty Enterprise which turns out to actually be a fake Enterprise on the most crowded planet ever. Written by Stanley Adams (the writer-actor who played Tribble-monger Cyrano Jones in “The Trouble With Tribbles”) and George F. Slavin (“Mannix”).
* “That Which Survives.” Kirk, McCoy and Sulu find themselves stranded on a planet 1,000 light years from the Enterprise, where a beautiful woman tries to kill them with her deadly touch. Written by D.C. Fontana (using the fake name Michael Richards) and John Meredyth Lucas (“Elaan of Troyius”).

* “The Lights of Zetar.” Murderous cloud aliens take over the body of Scotty’s girlfriend without permission. Written by Lambchop’s mommy Shari Lewis (!) and husband Jeremy Tarcher (brother of Judith Krantz). (Lewis wanted to play Scotty’s girlfriend.)
* “Requiem for Methuselah.” Kirk and Spock run into a 4,000-year-old Leonardo DaVinci and his hot robot girlfriend. Written by Jerome Bixby (“Day of the Dove”).
* “The Way to Eden.” The Enterprise picks up a bunch of Manson-y hitchhiking space hippies who have quit their straight jobs to seek Space Paradise. “Spock’s Brain” takes a lot of guff, but this episode is much harder to watch. Written by Arthur Heinemann (“Wink Of An Eye”) & D.C. Fontana (using the fake name Michael Richards).
* “The Cloud Minders.” Kirk tries to resolve a labor dispute between cloud-dwelling managers and planet-bound Troglyte miners. It’s still pretty annoying that they stuck “Minders” in the title of an episode about miners. Written by David Gerrold (“The Trouble With Tribbles”), Margaret Armen (“The Paradise Syndrome”) & Oliver Crawford (“Let That Be Your Last Battlefield”).
* “The Savage Curtain.” An exceeding goofy antepenultimate episode, it proved hugely seminal with its introduction of three iconic fake-historical characters: Surak, who 300 years after the birth of Christ turned the spacefaring, nuke-weilding Vulcans onto the path of logic and reason; ancient Klingon leader Kahless The Unforgettable (who had no skull ridges, could impersonate Surak and Abraham Lincoln effortlessly and enjoyed dressing as a 23rd century Klingon) who united the Klingon Empire around the time of King Arthur; and Col. Phillip Green, who 150 years from now (during the time of Jonathan Archer) will precipitate a horrible genocide. Less important so far to Star Trek mythology is the character of Zora, “who conducted brutal experiments on the primitive tribes of Tiburon.” The episode is about a lava-dwelling telepath who pits Kirk, Spock, Lincoln and Surak against Green, Kahless, Zora and Genghis Kahn. How Hitler got left out of that mix is anybody’s guess. Written by Gene Roddenberry & Arthur Heinemann (“The Way To Eden”).
* “All Our Yesterdays.” A confused caretaker named Atoz (A-to-Z, get it?) uses a time portal to ship Spock and McCoy back to Earth’s Ice Age, where Spock reverts to savage Vulcantry and falls for fabulous ice-girl Mariette Hartley. Written by Jean Lisette Aroeste (“Is There In Truth No Beauty?”).
* “Turnabout Intruder.” One of Kirk’s ex-flames switches bodies with him so she can be the first female captain in Starfleet history, sort of. Written by Arthur H. Singer (“Then Came Bronson”) & Gene Roddenberry.
EXTRAS RETURNING FROM THE 2004 SEASON SET:
* “To Boldly Go: Season Three” (22:36) Learn that the third season ran in NBC’s death slot: Fridays at 10 p.m. Learn that that cast realized it was NBC’s death slot. Learn that Nimoy and new showrunner Freiberger did not agree on the show’s direction.
* “Life Beyond Trek: Walter Koenig” (10:58) Learn that Koenig learned he earned the role of Chekhov from a costume designer. Learn that Koenig collects Chekhov dolls, pinback buttons and Joe Palooka comics, and dislikes periods when he’s not working.
* “Chief Engineer’s Log” (6:11) Learn that James Doohan was shot eight times on D-Day. Learn that Doohan liked “Wolf in the Fold,” “The Doomsday Machine” and “The Trouble With Tribbles.”
* “Memoir From Mr. Sulu” (8:42) Learn that George Takei thinks Sulu would have wound up the oldest captain in Starfleet, and that he still wants to star in a TV series about the Excelsior. Learn that Takei has generally fond memories of his boyhood in an Arkansas internment camp.
* “Star Trek’s Impact” (9:04) Learn that Gene Roddenberry’s son Eugene says he regards Edith Keeler’s death as “Star Trek’s” finest moment. Learn that the animal-loving Roddenberry fils was relieved that Scotty did not beam the tribbles into space.
* “A Star Trek Collector’s Dream Come True” (7:06) Fan an pro propmaker John Long talks about the various phaser and communicators he’s replicated.
* “Collectible Trek” (14:35) Learn that an original Klingon ship model sold for a million bucks. Learn that Leonard Nimoy never refuses autograph requests because he couldn’t as a boy get the autograph of Danny Kaye.
NEW EXTRAS:
* The new set contains two versions of series pilot “The Cage,”: a 63:28 full-color version with those newly added 21st century special effects; and a 70:55 “extended edition” featuring a 1986 videotaped introduction with Roddenberry and lots of non-enhanced grainy black and white footage from before the pilot’s color footage was rediscovered.
* “Billy Blackburn’s Treasure Chest Part 3” (10:52) Regular extra/stand-in Blackburn tells more stories and dusts off more old home movies. See Blackburn star in “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield” makeup tests.
* “Captain’s Log: Bob Justman” (9:34) A look at the role co-producer Justman, who passed away May 28, played in supervising the budget on the original series. Learn that Elaan’s bodyguards wore plastic placemats. Learn that “The Paradise Syndrome” exteriors were shot near Mulholland Drive.

“The Complete Monty Python’s Collector’s Edition” contains all 45 episodes produced between 1969 and 1974: Ken Shabby, Mr. Neutron, Bicycle Repairman, The Bishop, The Dirty Vicar, Arthur “Two Sheds” Jackson, poet Ewen MacTeagle, highwayman Dennis Moore, Ron Obvious, Adolf Hilter, Raymond Luxury-Yacht, The Spanish Inquisition, Mr. Pither, the most awful family in Britain, the funniest joke in the world, the dead parrot sketch, the cheese shop sketch, the dirty fork sketch, the Oscar Wilde sketch, splunge and spam.
While it contains more extras than 2005’s 16-Ton Megaset, its packaging takes up less room on your shelf. Which is nice.
EXTRAS RETURNING FROM 2005’s 16-TON MEGASET:
* “Monty Python Live At The Hollywood Bowl” (76:51) The R-rated 1982 feature chronicling the troupe’s September 1980 four-night stand in Los Angeles. It made three times as much money in U.S. cinemas as 1971’s “And Now For Something Completely Different.” John Cleese’s silly walk turns out to be an even greater marvel when performed live. Neil Innes needlessly takes up time with two undistinguished, unfunny tunes of his own composition. Eric Idle concludes the performance by singing lead on the Lumberjack Song, which is a bit like having Timothy B. Schmidt sing lead on “Life in the Fast Lane.”
* “Monty Python Live In Aspen” (57:48) Robert Klein hosts a hugely entertaining R-rated 1998 HBO panel reunion of the surviving Pythons and Graham Chapman’s ashes. (Eddie Izzard initially tries to pass himself off as one of the group.) Learn that the BBC paid little attention to the show until they used the word “masturbation” in a sketch. Eric Idle tells a very funny Graham Chapman story about the group’s trip to the Dachau concentration camp. Months after “Fierce Creatures” flopped, Klein asks when the group will make another movie, and Cleese announces that the group has been in meetings and intends to do something for their 30th anniversary. (Alas, 1983’s “The Meaning of Life” remains their last cinematic effort together.) The cast and crew of “Cheers” seems to enjoy themselves very much.
* “Parrot Sketch Not Included: 20 Years Of Python” (71:55) A nearly useless Steve Martin-hosted 1989 special lashing together sketches from the series. Viewers are advised to fast-forward to the final minute, in which Martin reveals what the troupe is up to now.
* “Monty Python’s Fliegender Zirkus” (44:04) A supersized all-film German-language episode shot in Bavaria for West German and Austrian television. A look at life and time of Albrecht Durer is mounted, then abandoned. “The Merchant of Venice” is performed by cattle. A fairy tale featuring a massive Red Riding Hood, a tiny wolf, an astronaut and Heinz the Stuttgart Rapist. There’s a 2,000-meter breaststroke for non-swimmers. Michael Palin performs a German-language version of The Lumberjack Song dressed in lederhosen.
Tragically absent from both the new set and the 16-Ton Megaset is the English-language episode made for German television.
NEW EXTRAS NOT ON THE 16-TON MEGASET:
* “Politically Incorrect” (3:06) This pre-title sketch, “A Party Political Broadcast on Behalf of the Conservative and Unionist Party,” was deleted from a repeat of 3.12, apparently because the BBC (stupidly) feared it would influence a looming general election. Trouble is, somebody forgot to restore the sketch subsequent to the election. Happily what appears to be the only surviving copy of the sketch was discovered at WNED, the PBS station in Buffalo, N.Y. (Pledge-drive text is superimposed over the sketch.) It depicts a conservative politician (Cleese) working with a choreographer (Idle) on dance moves for his speech.
* “Animated Gilliam” (16:19) The bearded movie director (“The Brothers Grimm,” “Tideland”) discusses the inspirations for his four bizarre “Flying Circus” title sequences. Learn his reliance on public-domain art cutouts was driven by time constraints. Learn that Minneapolis native Gilliam once worked at the GM assembly plant in Van Nuys, Calif., which inspired his second-season opening.
* “Before The Flying Circus: A Black and White Documentary” (55:31) A thorough and fascinating look at pre-Python careers. Learn that Graham Chapman’s dad was a cop and his older brother pursued medicine as well. Learn that all five British Pythons independently adored radio’s “The Goon Show” with Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan. Learn that John Cleese still considers “Beyond the Fringe” with Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Alan Bennett and Jonathan Miller the funniest show he’s ever seen. Learn that Gilliam studied political science at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Learn that while all the five British Pythons got their first big break on “The Frost Report” as writers, Cleese was the only one who also served as one of the show’s stars. Learn that the live “Frost Report” was an instant hit, drawing 14 million viewers weekly. Learn that Chapman was promoted to star for “At Last The 1948 Show,” which also starred Cleese and Marty Feldman. Watch a hilarious clip of the six-episode Palin/Jones project “The Complete and Utter History of Britain,” which apparently led Cleese in February 1969 to phone up Palin about doing a show together. Learn the group’s first full “Python” meeting happened two months later, in April. “Python” premiered six months after that, on Oct. 5 at 10:55 p.m.
* “Monty Python Conquers America” (54:52) is even more wonderful. Judd Apatow, Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Paul Rudd, Luke Wilson, Jimmy Fallon, David Hyde-Pierce, Hank Azaria, Jay Roach, Robert Klein and Carl Reiner are among those who express their adoration for the show. Learn what role Victor Lownes, an American Playboy Club executive living in London, played in bringing the series to America. Learn that a key Columbia Pictures exec shelved “And Now For Something Completely Different,” made for American audiences unfamiliar with the series, because he did not enjoy its Twit of the Year sketch and the troupe refused to cut it. Learn how many Americans first encounter Python via their long-playing records. Learn that Python’s American record company, Buddha, played a big role in convincing Columbia to release “Different.” Learn that on the Pythons’ first tour of Canada (which got the show years before the U.S.), Graham Chapman claimed to have seduced a Regina Mountie. Learn that John Cleese, who has married at least three Americans, was the only member unwilling to come to America following the Canadian tour. Learn that the five other Pythons made their American network TV debuts doing 20 minutes of material on a disastrous episode of “The Tonight Show” guest-hosted by Joey Bishop. (They also taped an appeared on NBC’s “Midnight Special” during the same swing.) Learn that Dallas PBS affiliate KERA became in October 1974 the first TV station in the U.S. to air “Python” because KERA station manager Bob Wilson (father of movie stars Luke and Owen Wilson) found himself crying at the lumberjack sketch program manager Ron Devillier screened for him from the stack of tapes syndicator Time Life Films forwarded. Learn that Wilson still speaks of the night he dined with the Pythons in a Mexican restaurant overlooking Dallas. Learn that “Python,” airing Sundays at 10 p.m., immediately scored by far the biggest ratings in KERA history and grew substantially from there. Learn that the other PBS stations were very excited by this news. See promos and appearances members of the cast shot for various PBS outlets. Learn that “Holy Grail” enjoyed a blockbuster opening during its exclusive run in New York -- in stark contrast to “Completely Different,” which had years earlier closed in New York after only a few days. (Lorne Michaels reportedly first met Chevy Chase in line for one Manhattan “Grail” showing.) Learn that the troupe was appalled when ABC bought the show’s final season for two 90-minute late night airings and carved out jokes to make room for the many late-night commercials. Learn that Palin and Gilliam flew to New York in an effort to get the American court system to stop ABC from airing the final 90 minutes. Learn that the court case resulted in the Python members taking control of the broadcast rights of all 45 episodes from the BBC. Learn that a rock-concert haze of marijuana permeated the Hollywood Bowl appearances.
* The final three of the 21 discs on the new set contain the material from the six hourlong “Personal Best” discs originally released February 2006. New material shot in 2005 by the five surviving Pythons surround the classic sketches.

Out on Blu-ray for the first time today is the first season of The History Channel’s “The Universe,” which uses all kinds of fancy special effects to demonstrate what’s doing with everything. It looks better in HD.
You’ll feel smarter and smaller as this series unfolds. In “Secrets of the Sun” we learn that the solar system will be uninhabitable in five billion years, so if you’re thinking the space program is a waste of money, think again.
The Mars segment teaches us the volcanic Olympus Mons is the size of Missouri. Learn that scientists are still hazy on what created the mammoth Mariner Valley, as wide as the United States. Learn that the “face” on the martian surface doesn’t look anything like a face under most lighting conditions. Learn that a piece of Mars was once discovered in Antarctica and that some scientists think it contains fossilized worms (while others do not).
In “Jupiter the Giant Planet” we learn Jupiter has more than 60 moons. Learn that 70 percent of all planetary mass in the solar system is in Jupiter. Learn that the eye of Jupiter is a hurricane-like storm that’s been raging more than 300 years. Learn that Jovian moon Io has over 100 active volcanos. Learn that sister moon Europa is believed to contain a huge liquid ocean of water just a few miles below its frozen surface. Learn that we can hear Jupiter’s magnetosphere on terrestrial AM radios. Learn that the ring around Jupiter is growing.
There are 13 episodes in all.
