A totally different look at OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE...
Welllll.... This spy here accuseses the previous of spy as being a 'studio shill' and then launches into a completely different look at the film. Hmmmm.... Turns out that the review that went up yesterday, was also sent to David Poland of ROUGH CUT as well as a couple of other sites.... So... hmmmmmm... could be true. My question is though... Are ya really so desperate for a positive review that ya have to fake one? Or... was it merely an excited fan that sent it to all his fave sites? Well, we'll have to wait and judge for ourselves when the finished film is released...
I'm a big fan of what you do and have been a lurker for some time. I sent
in a review of There's Something About Mary that I got to see in a studio
sneak deal that was so fawning and enthusiastic you probably thought it was
a plant (this was before they had even started ads and the whole shebang
was a huge surprise). They even gave us bottles of TSAM hair gel as we
filed in. So now I'm reading a positive review of Outside Providence that,
having seen the film last fall in a test audience, I just have to believe
is a studio plant.
Although was still in progress when I saw it, it was very nearly completed.
Just needed some color correction and overdubbing. Even if it was shined up
like a new penny, it would be horrible. They're just beginning to run
previews/commercials and from the looks of whichever one I saw, it's the
same crappy movie. Of course that's a big disappointment for everyone
expecting a Farelly Bros. movie, but yo! A Farrelly only wrote the source
book and maybe co-wrote the screenplay. The film is pure mis-guided hokum.
Filled with sub-Dawson's Creek actors and an actress that looks so much
like Claire Danes it's spooky. The humor is stagnant and there isn't much
of it. The plot is muy, muy predictable. Not one thing surprised me. Even
that Dad's (Alec Baldwin's) friend George Wendt was gay. Now that was heavy
handed, obvious, telegraphed from the beginning, and treated as sensitively
as a very special episode of Night Court. And DUH! Of course Alec will
throw a fit but whaddayaknow, they're all playing poker together by the end
of the film. As a fag, I found it embarrassing and out of touch.
Anyone expecting gut laughs or a knowing recognition of the main characters
will be sadly disappointed. THIS IS NOT A FARRELLY BROS MOVIE!!! I laughed
more at Meet Joe Black (hey! they were showing TPM trailer.... I have an
excuse :) )
