SCREAMS FROM CANADA ABOUT THE SCREENING!!!!

Our spy, Belle Rosen, earned her swimming medal for coming up with this review of Adrian Lyne's distributor-less "LOLITA". I've been dying to hear word on this film, and finally we get some. Well one thing it can't top is the original's poster. That shot is soooo classic, but anyway here's Belle's review:

I saw Adrian Lyne's "Lolita" this morning, and I have to say that I really liked this thing. It's not really the story that makes this movie work, it's the actors.

Jeremy Irons is just great in the role of the pedophile teacher, who falls for a 12-year old girl. He ads a very ironic, yet tragic and sometimes violent touch to his performance.

Dominique Swain , in her feature debut (she made "Face/Off" right after "Lolita") is also excellent as the girl who knows how to seduce this old freak. Whatching her playing with her gum gives you a real good idea why man with that kind of sickness can't resist.

Adrian Lyne found a very own way of picturing the feeling going on on the screen. He used soft images and long shots to show the lovin' feelings between the two main characters, and on the other hand, there were very fast cuts and unstable images to show the tragedy of this relationship.

Are there scenes to be offended about? Well, there are two scenes where Irons and Swain are having sex. There are a couple of shots of Swain's face in ecstatic pleasure, but thats it. If anyone doesn't like to see that (because of her young age), one has to accept it. I didn't bother me, but I think Lyne would have done a great job even without showing those sequences, because they are not really necessary for the story or the film at all. If he didn't, maybe he wouldn't have had so many problems finding an US disributor for the film. (I don't know if the film is sold now.)

For me it was a truly refreshing experience, not because of the sexual content, but because of two great actors playing very well together, and a very interesting and special visual style. And I'm sure, "Lolita" and "Face/Off" was not the last we've seen of Dominique Swain. At least, let's hope not.
