In typically blunt and timely fashion, Steve “Frosty” Weintraub over at Collider.com put up a story tonight that echoes something I heard from Jeremy “Naked Man-Wrasslin’” Smith from Chud.com told me when I saw him after he went to the IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH junket in Hollywood Saturday morning.

Okay... so what does that mean?

Well, go read that transcript that Steve put up. Sarandon explains the visual approach to SPEED RACER in a more particular way that I’ve heard before. Evidently, they’re using multiple layers of printed information to guarantee that everything in frame is always in focus. Hyper-clarity. As in a cartoon. Unless they specifically add blur, I suppose, as anime often does. Sarandon’s description of the process of working with the Wachowskis is something else... it sounds to me like she did it for the fun of trying something so cutting edge. And I really liked how it sounds like Tommy Lee Jones, in talking to Sarandon about it at this junket, is just as curious about it as anyone else.

The more I hear about SPEED RACER, the more I like it. I have the script for that here, and for the other race movie, the DEATH RACE 3000 latest drafts... they’re in a big virtual stack of scripts that I have to read at some point, and I’m thinking maybe I should just take a day and read them both back-to-back. One giant-budget family film, one SF geek-oriented bloodbath.
